This article draws on the unique backdrop of Lebanese sociopolitical history to explore a lieu de mémoire that figures centrally in the rhetoric of Hezbollah around Ashura, the 10th night of the commemoration of Imam Hussein’s death at Karbala. Using an analysis of the speeches of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah on Ashura, this article examines the party’s rhetoric around the battle of Karbala, and the revered leader’s death, through the three dimensions of lieux de mémoire as identified by Pierre Nora, paying particular attention to the role of mediatization in the materiality of

Abstract The visual culture of the Iranian Twelver Shiʿa is documented in a variety of media, ranging from manuscripts and lithographed books via tilework and wallpaintings to lacquerwork, reverse images on glass, and the canvasses of popular storytellers. Indispensably connected to a narrative level, it focuses on the creed’s pivotal trauma, the violent death of the Prophet Muḥammad’s grandson Ḥusayn and his followers during the battle of Karbala. Iranian Shiʿi visual culture was particularly rich in the Qajar period, when the ritual performances of the “Persian passion play,” the taʿziyya, c

AbstractThe story of Imam Husain's martyrdom at Karbala has been told with variant emphases and interpretations in different historical contexts. This article examines one of the most famous modern tellings of this narrative: that of ‘Ali Naqi Naqvi, arguably South Asia's most influential Shi‘imujtahidof the twentieth century. It argues that, from the 1930s–1940s, ‘Ali Naqi pioneered a novel perspective on Imam Husain, establishing him as a model for human comportment and a figure to be actively emulated, both by Shi‘as and by humanity at large. This article is an analysis of the story of the killing of Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī at Karbala in 61/680, as it is presented by al-Ṭabarī. The main argument is that the notion of the divine covenant, which permeates the Qur'an, constitutes a framework through which al-Ṭabarī views this event. The Qur'anic idea of the covenant is read in structural/thematic continuity with the Hebrew Bible account of the covenant between Yahweh and the Hebrew people, which has, in turn, been traced back in its basic form to Late Bronze Era treaties between rulers and their vassals. This document reflects a common phenomenon in the central Islamic lands of the post-Mongol and pre-Safavid period, namely, the non-sectarian veneration of the family of the Prophet Muhammad, and its narrative provides unusually rich details about the pilgrim’s objectives in commissioning it.
