Full textThe question in the origin of our research is the relationship between the re-definition of the Turkish Republic established in 1923 and the development of contemporary art in general an in particular in painting. This seems to be an efficient field of research ; studying the basis of cultural politics of the Turkish government concerning plastic arts on one hand and questioning it's relation to the evolution of the 'Turkish identity 'in the paintings of some Turkish artists on the other hand. Our primary aim is to re-define the actual situation of contemporary art in Turkey by the study of it's historical background. We have studied the question by elaborating the national signs in the Turkish paintings from 1923 to 1997, that is from the Republican period to the contemporary period. The period 1923-1927 in Turkey has been studied by several scholars from socio-economic and political points of view. We have pointed out to those studies in reformulation of the question of nationalism from the aesthetics point of view. Did the aesthetic transformations come up at the time of Turkish Republic ? If it is the case, at what order were-they ? What role did the artists who were open to European art from XIX century and more particularly from 1923 onwards play ? For what reasons and means were-they supported by the State ? What was the place of painting in the reconstruction of Turkish history seen by the new vision of the Republican nation ? What were the internal contradictions of such a situation, and two what extend did the artistic movements of the contemporary artists of the last twenty years assume or reject this heritage of nationalist discourse expressed by the painting ? Those are the questions that structured the research we refer under the general title of visual narration of a nation

CAPES
The aim of this paper is to discuss the dissonance between Turkish and Kurdish identities in Anatolia, considering the conflagration of conflict between its representative actors. In this sense, the paper encompasses three sections: (a) presentation of theoretical perspectives on identity in the relevant historical contexts of the international system; (b) description of the trajectory of the Kurdish question in international politics; and (c) identification of the prospect scenarios for the dilemma between the narrative of Turkish national identity and the narrative of Kurdish national identity. The delimited time frame covers the period between 1984 and 2016. The methodology adopted includes the following classification: (a) descriptive research on the purposes; (b) bibliographical research on means; and (c) qualitative research on the form of approach. The research concludes that the conflict between the Turkish state and the Kurdish ethnic group is a reflection of the international system conjunctures that resulted in separatist nationalisms. Asymmetric identities and antagonistic languages, as well as poverty and despotism are the structural causes of long periods of violence in Anatolia. Sustainable peace will only be established through changes in Turkey's political, economic and social structures, starting with the dialogue between Partiya Karkêren Kurdistan (PKK) and the Turkish government. Only with the end of military and paramilitary operations the principles of democratization and self-determination can be institutionalized in the region.

Full textIn the 1980s, the opening of the Turkish economy to international markets led to a substantial change in Istanbul’s retail landscape. In this environment characterised by fierce and multifaceted competition and the rise of large-scale retailers, the bakkal (‘grocer’ and ‘grocery store’ or ‘corner shop’ in Turkish) were marginalised. Nevertheless, they still exist. This PhD thesis is based on fieldwork conducted in 2014 and 2015. It takes the form of three case studies and used ethnographic and microscopic methods (interviews, observations), combined with an urban anthropological approach which looks at the city as a research object. This study shows that, in the places in which their shops are embedded, the bakkal contribute to the daily production of the city at a local level, which leads to the creation of micro-spaces and the development of a personal relationship with the city. This reflects the fragmentation and individualisation of this profession whose members rarely organise themselves collectively. Each of the shops which have been studied can be seen as an urban theatre in which family life, the values of the storekeeper and neighbourhood life are readable from the street. As such, the corner shop establishes itself as a ‘moral showcase’ which propagates an intimate and territorial narrative in the micro-space it influences.Looking at Istanbul from the bakkal’s perspective, one can observe how these daily-life urban actors participate in the co-construction of the city by incorporating into their trade, in an individual way, the local expressions of urban transformation processes in Istanbul, be they gentrification, the feeling of loss of neighbourhood or urban regeneration, as well as certain national and metropolitan political debates (alcohol consumption, neighbourhood watching or the use of public spaces)

Full textChildren are the most important value and future of a society. However, today, one of the important societal problems in Turkey as well as in the problem of marriage of underage girls. The aim of this thesis is firstly to look critically at the marriages of underage girls in Turkey to find out its reasons and results and reveal the experiences of women who married before age of 18 and how these women perceive the child marriage problem. Secondly, it is aimed to analyze related news in Turkish print media and across Twitter posts and to find out how the media reflects this problem and if these news reports and Twitter posts’ discourses correspond to the discourses of the women in question. The thesis consists of two types of field research. In the first stage of the research, a face-to-face, semi-structured interview is conducted with the women who married before their age of 18. In the second research, related news reports in Turkish print media and posts on Twitter are examined. Finally, the findings of two types of research are compared. This thesis, which is based on feminist framework theoretically, consists of five main chapters. In this study, the relation between the way that these underage married women identified themselves and statements of media are investigated. In this regard, the study aims to make a contribution to the literature in terms of discussing the problem from the sociological perspective and it is hoped to make contribution to the solution of the problem to decrease the number of underage married girls in Turkey
Lessinger, Enora. "The Translation of Silence in K. Ishiguro’s Novels ˸ testing the Explicitation Hypothesis on Unreliable Narratives." Thesis, Paris 3, 2019. http://bibnum.univ-paris3.fr/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=323335.
Full textThis thesis explores the translations of four of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels into five target languages – French, Hebrew, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish. The centrality of the implicit and the unsaid in the narrative pact entails the implied reader’s active participation and naturally has consequences on the translation process, both because the translator is initially a reader and due to the increased communicative risk involved in translation (Becher 2010a). In order to explore the challenge of recreating the verbal restraint and poetics of silence at work in these novels’ respective narrative strategies, this investigation crosses the study of translation universals with that of narrative poetics, testing at the narratological level the explicitation hypothesis put forward by Blum-Kulka in 1986. This potential universal of translation posits the existence of a tendency towards greater explicitness in target texts than in corresponding source texts. The focus on narrative poetics adopted here constitutes a new approach to the study of explicitation in translation; linguistic and cognitive explicitness are considered chiefly in order to situate narratological explicitness in relation to them. The results obtained show a generalised tendency towards implicitation of the narrative strategy in unreliable narratives, i.e. in narratives where indirectness is a central narrative device. This implicitation can correspond to blank-filling and resolution of ambiguity, or to the disappearance of the textual clues pointing the implied reader to the subtext below the surface narrative. This in turn suggests that the translation universal at play here is not explicitation but reduction of complex narrative voices (Chesterman 2010)

Full textThis thesis aims to study egodocuments in a period of political and social transformations, from the 1890s to the 1930s. Our study is based on case studies: A diary, almanacs, letters, photo albums, interior photographies as well as a series of published sources. From the end of the 19th century, new forms of self-representation developed in the Ottoman Empire, often related to emergent political discourses. The diffusion of photography and the new techniques of reproduction of texts and images contributed to the development of these new forms of self-representation. Our aim is to analyze written and visual tools of self-representation, that are most of the time intermingled, in an all-encompassing approach. The study of this documentation enables us to analyze, at the individual level, the ways in which the subjects of this study made experience of a world in transformation, constructed and preserved their memories, imagined their future. This also allows us to follow the transnational circulation of objects and practices, as well as their adaption and reappropriation by a “new social base”. Our sources are also the objects of our study. We are also interested in the materialities and uses of these documents as well as in what they tell us on the experiences, emotions, senses and the mise-en-scène or the performance of the self
Arici, Sila. "Aesthetics and politics in eighteenth century english women's travel writings on Ottoman Empire." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/38144.
A Journey Through the Crimea to Constantinople. In a Series of Letters from the Right Honourable Elizabeth Lady Craven, to His Serene Highness the Margrave of Brandebourg, Anspach, and Bareith Written in the Year MDCCLXXXVI (1789), respeitante quase exatamente aos mesmos locais em 1786, aponta para as características do crescente pensamento imperial e do Romantismo em Inglaterra.
