Based on ethnographic research with a transnational Hindu family and its social networks, this book examines the ways that middle-class Hindu communities are engaged actively in creating and maintaining their communities. Imagination as a social practice has been a crucial component of defining a transnational life in the moments between actual contact across borders, and the narratives community members tell are key components of communicating these social imaginaries. Narrative performances shape participants’ social realities in multiple ways: they define identities, they create connections between community members living on opposite sides of national borders, and they help create new homes amid increasing mobility. The narratives are religious and include both epic narratives, such as excerpts from the Rāmāyaṇ, and personal narratives with dharmic implications. The book argues that this Hindu community’s religious narrative performances significantly contribute to shaping their transnational lives. The analysis combines scholarly understandings of the ways that performances shape the contexts in which they are told, indigenous comprehension of the power that reciting certain narratives can have on those who hear them, and the theory that social imaginaries define new social realities through expressing the aspirations of communities.

Uncertain Futures considers how economic actors visualize the future and decide how to act in conditions of radical uncertainty. It starts from the premise that since dynamic capitalist economies are characterized by relentless innovation and novelty, they exhibit an indeterminacy that cannot be reduced to measurable risk. The organizing question then becomes how economic actors form expectations and make decisions despite the uncertainty they face. The current microfoundations of standard economics cannot handle genuinely uncertain futures. Instead, uncertainty requires an entirely new model of economic reasoning. This edited volume helps lay foundations for this new model by showing how economic actors in practice form expectations in conditions of uncertainty. It draws on groundbreaking research in economic sociology, economics, anthropology, and psychology to present theoretically grounded empirical case studies that demonstrate the role of imaginaries, narratives, and calculative technologies—and their various combinations—in enabling economic actors to form expectations and cope with uncertain futures. The book examines risk management techniques, finance models, and discounted cash-flow models as well as methods of envisaging the future that overtly combine calculation with narrative structure and imaginaries. These include central bank forward guidance, economic forecasts, business plans, visions of technological futures, and new era stories. Considerable attention is given to how these fictional expectations influence actors’ behaviour, coordinate action, and provide the confidence to act, and how they become instruments of power in markets and societies. The market impact of shared calculative devices, social narratives, and contingent imaginaries underlines the rationale for a new form of narrative economics.

This chapter provides a theoretical framework for considering how imaginaries and narratives interact with calculative devices to structure expectations and beliefs in the economy. It analyses the nature of uncertainty in innovative market economies and examines how economic actors use imaginaries, narratives, models, and calculative practices to coordinate and legitimize action, determine value, and establish sufficient conviction to act despite the uncertainty they face. Placing the themes of the volume in the context of broader trends in economics and sociology, the chapter argues that, in conditions of widespread radical uncertainty, there is no uniquely rational set of expectations, and there are no optimal strategies or objective probability functions; instead, expectations are often structured by contingent narratives or socially constructed imaginaries. Moreover, since expectations are not anchored in a pre-existing future reality but have an important role in creating the future, they become legitimate objects of political debate and crucial instruments of power in markets and societies.

During the period when official and public discourse was frequently used for political purges, stories about the affairs of the world-beyond were used as a convenient vehicle for delivering political messages. After the death of Wang Anshi, a supporter of stronger monarchical power, a series of eyewitness accounts of his ill fate in purgatory were widely spread. In contrast, Han Qi, a critic of Wang, was reported to have become a god in glory who was in charge of the other-world tribunal court. The abundance of narratives on the social imaginaries of the world-beyond and the supernatural reveals that the Confucian maxim of keeping silent on that topic was widely defied. At the same time, scholar-officials in their public discourse with their authorship tended to defend Confucian traditional belief in Heaven as the ground of ethics, and to reject any counter-imaginaries.

The chapter proposes a history of the grand narratives associated with a succession of recent socio-economic regimes. Since the 2000s, radical uncertainty has greatly increased, given widespread innovation, and the unprecedented complexity of domestic and international interdependencies. In these circumstances, actors cannot form fully rational expectations because the past is a poor predictor of the future. This agony of the rational expectation hypothesis has opened a wide space to consider the role played by economic narratives in conditions of uncertainty. These narratives are generally rather simple in form and promise a drastic reduction of radical uncertainty and system complexity. Businesses use storytelling to convince markets to finance daring, uncertain projects, and economic policy-makers rely on it to coordinate action. In this way, imaginaries and narratives are crucial in moving capitalist spirits—but at the cost of recurring financial and economic crises as each is found wanting in turn.

It provides theoretical perspectives on constructions of futurity, across the arts, humanities, and social sciences, opening up multidisciplinary conversations between them. Bringing together emerging perspectives on the future from diverse disciplinary perspectives including critical theory, design, anthropology, sociology, politics, and history, the book examines the ways in which the future can be an object of empirical study, a subject for theorization, and an orientation for practice in the real world. The book examines historical and contemporary forms of futures knowledge, the methodologies and technologies of futures expertise, and the role played by different institutions in legitimizing, deploying, and controlling anticipatory practices. Contributors challenge and debate the varied ways in which futures are conjured and constructed, as objects of art and imagination as well as of science and geopolitics. Chapters explore issues as diverse as the utopian imagination, history and philosophy, literary and political manifestos, artefacts and design fictions, and forms of technological and financial forecasting, big data, climate-modelling, and scenarios. The book positions the future as a question of power, of representations and counter-representations, and forms of struggle over future imaginaries. Forms of futures-making depend on complex processes of envisioning and embodiment. Each chapter investigates the critical vocabularies, genres, and representational methods—narrative, quantitative, visual, and material—of futures-making as deeply contested fields in cultural and social life.

An examination of revealed knowledge and textual authority in Daniel clarifies the relationship among Daniel, earlier prophets, and Mesopotamian divinatory wisdom. Daniel’s apocalyptic imagination combines prophetic language and imagery with new visionary experience, offering readers powerful new language, symbols, and models for embodied practice. Cross-disciplinary studies of imagination suggest ways that Daniel’s prophetic and apocalyptic imagination allowed ancient readers to interact with the legacies of the Mesopotamian and Hellenistic empires while simultaneously rejecting their totalizing narratives. Teniendo en cuenta que tanto la historia escrita como la historia audiovisual constituyen actos de interpretación articulados a los contextos de producción y, en ese sentido, pueden hablarnos tanto del presente en que son producidas, como del hecho histórico que intentan evocar, este libro parte de la premisa que considera el audiovisual y la historia escrita como fuentes y objetos de reflexión sobre los imaginarios de la historia, los usos del pasado y los condicionamientos e incidencias sociales de la producción del conocimiento histórico. Desde esta óptica, se valora el audiovisual como documento social que puede ser leído como un texto enunciado desde una posición en determinada cultura o ideología, resultado de un principio de selección a partir del cual se configura un discurso histórico. La lectura histórica del audiovisual que aquí se propone supone tomar conciencia del carácter de representación de lo que se ve, y emprender una labor interpretativa que tiene en cuenta la servidumbre del producto audiovisual respecto al momento de su realización, prestando especial atención al contraste de imágenes y a los contextos (material, social, político y cultural), así como a la pluralidad metodológica que requiere la diversidad de imágenes.

Latin American Culture and the Limits of the Human curates an important series of case studies of the posthuman imaginaries and nonhuman tropes employed in a broad range of Latin American cultural texts, from the narratives of Las Casas to new media and installation art in contemporary Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina. The book’s introduction highlights the ways the figure of the “limit” has functioned as an important site of aesthetic, ontological, and political experimentation and reworking in Latin American cultural production, and underlines the potentialities and possible risks associated with the use of posthuman frameworks in the region. The different chapters examine the ways human borders and boundaries have been tested, undermined, and reformulated in relation to issues including dictatorial violence and drug war necropolitics, ecological storytelling, indigenous thought systems, gender, race, history, and new materialism. The book as a whole marshals a wide range of theoretical frameworks and points to the complex ways Latin American culture intersects with and departs from global formulations of humanism and the posthuman.

En este libro, el autor sugiere que una de las principales marcas de identidad del cine colombiano (y buena parte del latinoamericano) es la conexión entre fi cción y realidad, y cómo, ante una realidad caótica de valores invertidos, los personajes de las historias se ven limitados a actuar en un contexto que castiga la heroicidad. Este texto busca ser referente para otros estudios que en el futuro se realicen sobre el cine colombiano o sobre cinematografías con condiciones industriales similares, en el entendido de que conocer las representaciones audiovisuales de una nación puede ayudarnos mucho en el conocimiento de su realidad, pero la narrativa no puede desligarse del contexto de la producción. Cuando la relación entre la fi cción y la realidad es tan estrecha como en el cine colombiano, estudiar el cine es acercarse a la esencia de los acontecimientos y su impacto en el imaginario colectivo nacional.

Hablar de universidad creativa es referirse a una institución de educación superior que sistematiza las experiencias narradas y tiene un enfoque que se configura como un modo propio de presentar los resultados de ejercicios de docentes y estudiantes. En este libro usted encuentra un sensible carácter polifónico del discurso narrativo, un acercamiento complejo que secuencia y privilegia el contexto. Por eso, los criterios que aquí se desarrollan están redefinidos de manera congruente con las premisas teóricas y con el material objeto de estudio (Connelly y Clandinin, 1990). Esta sistematización de experiencias de narrativas en el aula le permite al lector un acercamiento interpretativo a los diversos asuntos desarrollados. Esto, en palabras de Lluis Duch2 , es una posibilidad antropológica del empalabrar la experiencia formativa, en este caso la profesional: se trata de lenguajear las maneras como se nombra el mundo, de nombrar la ubicación lingüística en él. Por eso es que se desarrollan temas en torno a rutas de análisis sobre enseñar a leer y a escribir, un ejercicio propio de la formación de maestros que atienden la infancia. Asimismo, la incidencia de la escritura a la hora de la creatividad en la generación de competencias para ingenieros; también se abordan las construcciones narradas en torno a la cultura, la política y el patrimonio; finalmente, se analiza la relación entre literatura y derecho gracias a que son posibles otras formas de asumir la formación de los profesionales en leyes. Y es que en las posibilidades para el abordaje de lo profesional en nuestros días, hay un alejamiento de las teorías clásicas sobre el tema, en tanto que en esta contemporaneidad es importante la mirada de disposiciones interaccionistas , y las que desde lo estructural4 trabajan la profesionalidad en estrecha relación con el desarrollo de una subjetividad que se pone en evidencia a través de lo biográfico. Este trabajo es precisamente un ejercicio de reconstrucción de la interacción al interior de las aulas de clase de una institución de educación superior, que emerge como una hermenéutica objetiva emanada de los análisis narrativos en torno a sucesos que se presentan en la formación de diferentes profesiones. Estas narrativas son definitivamente una opción para reconstruir un tejido que dota de sentido acciones de aula. Unas narrativas como las que Antonio Bolívar denomina Profesionalización desde abajo, ya que para este tipo de ejercicios resulta interesante observar las diversas maneras en las que se puede comprender que las profesiones se constituyen desde las interacciones cotidianas, y que están determinadas por una diversidad compleja de tensiones, paradojas y sentidos. Ellas están dadas por lo que W. Helsper6 denomina las antinomias del actuar pedagógico que es el vínculo cotidiano entre lo real, lo imaginario y lo simbólico. Es importante reiterar que Profesionalización desde abajo hace referencia entonces al grupo de trabajo representado por los sujetos conscientes de sí mismos y de su instalación histórica como profesionales. En este trabajo se evidencian subjetividades y configuración de formaciones de maestros y estudiantes, en medio de un habitus profesional, lo que tiene que ver con la obtención de una serie de habilidades científicas que les permite instalarse, para decidir y actuar como expertos. En síntesis, tematizar las profesiones, desde el análisis de las características, no es en definitiva una manera adecuada para proceder sobre ese asunto. Por eso, el gran valor de un texto como este es que le permite al lector interpretar la estructura de los problemas de la formación laboral, de manera que esta reconstrucción de lo que sucede en los espacios de formación puestos en narrativas –si se me permite, desde abajo-, permite pensar de otra manera y con amplitud de perspectivas las cuestiones propias de la formación de profesionales como la que exige nuestro tiempo. Hoy la pregunta por quienes atienden la sociedad debe plantearse en otros términos. La discusión científica sobre el trabajo y las labores profesionales ocupa estantes de bibliotecas. Entonces, un libro que reconstruye creativamente la universidad, desde la sistematización de las experiencias de narrativas, ocupa un lugar especial. Echando mano de un basamento teórico-conceptual que bebe de la filosofía, la teoría literaria, la sociología y la historia, Juan Pablo Pino Posada se adentra en los pliegues de la obra del poeta colombiano Aurelio Arturo (La Unión, 1906 - Bogotá, 1974) con el propósito de estudiar las maneras en que las nociones de “espacio” y “subjetividad” se trenzan y ponen de manifiesto las tensiones propias de la modernidad tardía. Lo verdaderamente singular de este libro estriba en que su aproximación, al ser de carácter histórico-narrativo, permite pensar los tres periodos creativos de la lírica arturiana –el de su juventud, su adultez y su vejez–, y las espacialidades (sean estas vividas, imaginarias o metafóricas) en torno a las cuales dichos periodos se forjan, como ejes constitutivos de un todo, de una unidad, de un “relato” (aristotélicamente hablando) que ofrece posibles respuestas a la pregunta tardomoderna por la interacción de la subjetividad consigo misma y con el lenguaje. Dejando de lado a José Eustasio Rivera (1888-1928), cuya producción lírica continúa siendo esquiva a rotulaciones generacionales, en el transcurso de esta travesía el autor logra entroncar a Arturo con Los Nuevos (1925), Piedra y Cielo (1939-c. 1944), la revista Mito (1955-1962), el Nadaísmo (1958-1974) y la Generación desencantada (1974-c. 1990), vistos de manera sinecdótica en poetas como Rafael Maya (1897-1980), Eduardo Carranza (1913-1985), Jorge Gaitán Durán (1924-1962), Jaime Jaramillo Escobar (1932) y José Manuel Arango (1937-2002), respectivamente. Lo anterior, pese a estar ceñido al siempre canonizante método generacional (hoy tan cuestionado al interior del campo de los Estudios Literarios), revela el interés de Pino Posada por desterrar el vicio que ha hecho que cierto sector de la crítica siga viendo a Arturo como una figura “insular”, ajena a los múltiples y diversos senderos poéticos del país. Estamos ante un trabajo riguroso, sensible y necesario para los estudios poetológicos en Colombia.
