Abstract:
This chapter addresses the symbolic power of narratives of Islamic resistance in the Tunisian context. This includes understanding why Islam constitutes a template to challenge to the politics of the status quo, historically, and therefore resonates amongst certain sections of the Tunisian nation, and understanding the power of the narrative of jihadi violence as a subset of these politics of resistance and challenge. It particularly focuses on understanding the resonance of these jihadi narratives in the wake of the 2011 Tunisian Revolution.

Abstract:
Spatial Resistance: Literary and Digital Challenges to Neoliberalism utilizes various literary and digital artifacts to show the potential and possibility of changing the ways we consider the spaces we inhabit. As many spaces become increasingly privatized and policed, it is necessary to contemplate ways in which corporate and state-controlled spaces can not only be subverted but fundamentally changed to embrace the diverse lived experiences of all peoples. Through an analysis of fictional and virtual spaces, readers will be able to identify new ways to institute spatial change in everyday spa

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the deployment and circulation of narratives of (dis)possession by the devil, particularly among women, represent a gendered form of understanding marginality and of confronting exploitation, domination, and material adversity. The compelling presence of the devil and malevolent spirits called jinn in the Delta region of southern Yemen in the 1990s echo accounts of spirits, tricksters, or aye in West African and New World cultures. Moreover, Margaret Garner's life history as interpreted by Toni Morrison in Beloved connects readers with a spiritual world of memory and p

Abstract:
Chapter 6 addresses the ethical issues involved in engaging with the perpetrator’s perspective by analyzing Jonathan Littell’s Les Bienveillantes (2006, The Kindly Ones). It discusses imaginative resistance, difficult empathy, and identification in relation to readerly engagement and perspective-taking. The chapter shows how the interplay between immersiveness and critical distance can produce a narrative dynamic that allows the reader to engage emotionally—but without uncritically adopting the protagonist’s perspective—with an ethically problematic life-world. It analyzes how the novel perfor

Abstract:
As one of the most prominent voices from and about the French Caribbean, Gisèle Pineau has garnered significant scholarly attention; however, this interest has culminated in precious few volumes devoted entirely to the author and her work. In response to this lack of in-depth critical attention, Reimagining Resistance in Gisèle Pineau’s Works brings together a range of perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic and across the Pacific to explore the unique ways in which Gisèle Pineau’s works redefine the concept of resistance, particularly as it relates to gender, race, history, and Antillean
