Full textThe digital games take an increasing part of our western society. The time when gaming was excluded to the most frantic computer fans is long gone. Today the gaming industry competes with both the film- and music industry for the consumers’ attention.
Despite this, research regarding the digital games has been put aside for a long time. But there is an ongoing process in establishing game studies regarding content and expression aspects that go beyond the question about possible psychological effects and such. But this process is still young and disagreements occur concerning how the games should be approached as an object of study.
This debate, originating from two different approaches; the narratological and the ludological, has proven to be central to the research society. To reach a better understanding regarding storytelling within the digital games I carried out a narratological analysis of a video game; Shadow of the Colossus for Playstation 2. I used classical narratological tools regarding the syntagmatic structure of storytelling; Propp’s characters and functions and Todorov’s equilibrium formula.
To be able to carry out this analysis the first step was to identify the storytelling elements of the game so that these could be properly recognized. After that the narratological tools were applied to these. In order not to neglect the medium specific characteristics that the digital games hold, I implemented a minor ludological analysis of its rules, to see how these were connected with the potential storytelling.
The narratological analysis proved to be useful; a number of Propp’s functions were identified and the storytelling could also be described on the basis of Todorov’s equilibrium. Furthermore a clear connection between the storytelling of the game and the ludus rules, meaning the rules that define the winning conditions and how to reach them. The classic narratological analysis was fruitful, but the medium specific characteristics with systems of rules and their connection to the storytelling elements proved to be an important relationship to illustrate further.

Full textThis paper aims to study the narrators and the narratees in Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief (2005) and The Lost Hero (2010), and to see what implications they have on the narrative itself. The paper focuses on a comparative examination of the novels in question and does all this from a narratological standpoint. The narratological perspective first and foremost comes from Gérard Genette's Narrative discourse and his terms extra-, intra-, hetero-, and homodiegetic narrative. The study of the narratee does the same but with Gerald Prince's article "Introduction to the Study of the Narratee" in Reader-response criticism: from formalism to post-structuralism. For a wider perspective of several, both new and old, narratological studies the paper also uses Manfred Jahn's "Narratology 2.1: A Guide to the Theory of Narrative". Through the analysis, one can gather that The Lightning Thief takes on a homo- and extradiegetic narrative with a specific group of narratees. This is contrasted with The Lost Hero's hetero- and extradiegetic narrative with a "zero-degree narratee" that has no apparent characteristics. By extension, one can also notice that a difference lies with the narrator's and narratee's relationship to an actual reader and how, especially in The Lightning Thief, the reader is forced to figure out how it relates to both the narratee and the narrator.

Full textThis work is based on the analysis of narrative in a corpus of novels (from 1834 to 1990), the setting of which is dedicated to Rome in the first century, a. D. It offers some hypotheses on the conditions in which the historical novel is created and functions. The purpose of the study is to highlight, by following the processes the novelist goes through, what problems are raised and how they are solved, within the very specific framework of the relation between history and fantasy. The creation of a historical novel is indeed "intertextuality" - the novel is the palimpsest of a historiographic hypotext. How does one pass from writing history to writing storie the study analyses how these works satisfy the two demands of realistic writing and popular writing - readability and description, which answer the lay reader's need for coherence and his thirst for referential illusion. The study shows how the clash between the pagan supernatural and the Christian supernatural produces a dialectic with argumentative purposes. Indeed, until the last few years, historical novels dedicated to that period have had a lission of Christian apologia. The study explores current trends in works of fiction in which religions emancipation, critical distance, exacerbated fantasies of violence, sexuality and erudition are all to be found. For, indeed, such fictional representations of the past also convey a certain picture of the present

Full textAbstract The aim of this essay is to investigate how TV and computer games convey history also, how it can be connected to didactics by showing what can be learnt by playing TV and computer games. In this essay I do not focus on history as a correct reproduction of an event. Instead I concentrate on how TV and computer games use history to motivate the player’s actions. The main question of this essay is: What is the connection between the use of history in TV and computer games and the player’s historical consciousness? In order to answer this question I have also used sub-questions. The first one being: How is historical consciousness illustrated in TV and computer games? Is it possible to develop historical consciousness through TV and computer games? In the analysis I show that historical consciousness is created through the story and the narrative techniques as well as the game play. The story contains different time lines that the player has to relate to, furthermore, the narrative techniques and the game play contain interactions and time puzzles that force the player to relate to past, present and future. In order to solve the time puzzles the player has to reflect on the story and the different time lines and how they are connected to each other. As a consequence the player develops his/her historical consciousness. I found that music, sound, graphics and the camera’s movement work as learning aids in order to make it easier for the player to follow the story. My second sub-question is: How are intentions behind an action explained in the game? With its story and its interactions the game shows that individuals can change reality by taking action. People are never forced by history and society, we always have the power to change our reality and create our own history. The game’s story also tells us that the past is built on people’s actions and that every action has an intention. Shadows of Memories illustrate how people of all times have been alike, consequently, it is easy to understand people’s intentions. To conclude, the connection between the game’s use of history and the player’s historical consciousness are the historical story, the interaction between different time lines and the narrative techniques that allows the player to act and change the past, present and future. These elements work together to trigger and develop the player’s historical consciousness. The TV and computer game Shadows of Memories cannot teach the player anything about the past, however it can help develop the player’s historical consciousness, increase self-perception, hence, contribute to identity development, visualise the connection between present and past and show the player how an act can influence the present and the future and also make the past more alive and thereby increase the student’s interest in history.
Karlsson, Maria. "Ladies av Mara Lee– en chick-lit som alla andra? : En narratologisk och diskursanalytisk studie av Ladies och chick-lit-genren." Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Gender, Culture and History, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-1776.
Full textMy thesis deals with the novel Ladies, written in 2007 by the Swedish author Mara Lee. When published, it was received as a book belonging to the chick lit genre but still got good reviews. This combination is really unusual and awoke my interest in the novel. My thesis is therefore an analysis whether Ladies can be considered a chick lit novel or not, and in what way it is similar to or differs from the genre.
I start my thesis with an overview of former research of chick lit and what earlier was called trivial literature. Here Lisbeth Larsson’s En annan historia, [Another Story], Janice Radway’s Reading the Romance and Suzanne Ferriss’ and Mallory Young’s anthology Chick Lit The New Woman’s Fiction were necessary to understand the background of the genre.
After the research overview I continue with a narratological analysis, using the concepts of Maria Nikolajeva’s Barnbokens byggklossar [The Bricks of the Children Book] to look at the structure of a chick lit story. After finishing my chick lit genre analysis I try to complete my own definition of the genre.
I find the themes love, sexuality and body focus in Ladies especially interesting and therefore choose to look closer into how these areas are represented in the book. By using Judith Butler’s concepts the heterosexual matrix, the represented gender and Tiina Rosenberg’s hetero normativity I analyse the representation of the themes.
In the final discussion I compare my different analyses and my conclusion shows that Ladies can’t be considered belonging to the chick lit genre. The biggest difference lies in how love and sexuality are represented in the book compared to chick lit novels. Whereas chick lit in many cases confirms gender stereotypes and conservative norms, Ladies actually, according to my analysis, questions them.
In the end I am finally doing a short reflection about the novel and the author using Pierre Bourdieus concepts about symbolic resources and ”habitus”.

Full textFor many people, a good game is synonymous with good graphics. One thing that is often forgotten, is that the graphics only makes up one part of the games. An aspect of the games that is far to often forgotten, is the game’s content and ability to tell stories. Through analyses of the games of the Zelda series, the development of content and storytelling aspects of computer- and video games, since the later half of the 1980:s and up till today, are examined.

Full textThis essay examines the representation of male and female stereotypes and gender-based social structures in the young adult fiction novel, Divergent (2012-2014), written by Veronica Roth. It is important to examine how popular literature discloses cultural expressions of male and female stereotypes to challenge and process content when teaching literature in upper secondary school. A qualitative, narrative text method is used to analyze the material with a focus on the narrative's point of view. The analysis is based on attributes of male and female stereotypes established by Maria Nikolajeva (2017). Feminist and gender research as well as feminist literary theory inform the theoretical background. According to research results, Tris, the female protagonist, breaks gender norms by acting strongly competitive and dauntless. These qualities are usually considered male attributes. Conclusions from the analysis are that author Veronica Roth masks gender stereotypes through the so-called fractions. Furthermore, it appears that typical male characteristics featured in a female character are positive, whereas typical female characteristics expressed through a male character are somewhat negative. Thus, the gender-based social structures of female subordination and male dominance are preserved in this narrative because of the portrayal of female characteristics as inferior to the male characteristics.

Full textThe title is intended to signify that the object of this inquiry is painting, more accurately the paintings of giotto and specifically the cycle of the life of saint francis, along the walls of the nave of the upper basilica at assisi ; that the method is semiotic, but resorts chiefly to such aspects of that discipline as address the linkingsand concatenations by which narrative commes to be ; lastly, that due attention will always be paid to the fact that we are dealing with a phenomenon of transmission of meaning, which brings complex and variable levels of enunciation into play. The thesis is three pronged : it posits in the first place that the picture is also legible as a text ; secondly, it claims that some pictorial arrangements make it possible, without imprecision or metaphor, to read them as a pictorial narrative ; lastly, it suggests that the full scope of the process of iconic creation may be encompassed if one develops a model of analysis that enables to account for the configurations, prefigurations and refigurations (ricoeur)

Purpose/Aim: My main purpose with this paper is 1) to study how film as a media can subvert traditional gender constructions and 2) study the character of Elizabeth Swann in the trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean through four dimensions; Gender performance, Class, Desire and Power.
Material/Method: My main material is the trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean. I have studied Elizabeth’s character based on semiotic and narratological methods.
Main results: Film as a media possesses the full potential to change traditional gender roles, but the full subversion is denied due to the heterosexual matrix. Elizabeth’s character almost completes her subversive journey throughout the trilogy, but since she too is a victim of the heterosexual matrix, a full subversion is not possible.
Key words: gender performance, class, desire, power, sex/gender, subversion, narratologic, semiotic, queer, feminism, pirates of the caribbean, intersectionality, parody
Racine, Sylvain. "En quoi la narration dans le romanL’Élégance du hérisson permet de bien rendre lamétaphore du « bocal à poissons »? : Une analyse narratologique." Thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Franska, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-19523.
Full textBased on Gérard Genette’s work, particularly Figures III, anarratological analysis of Muriel Barbery’s L’Élégance du hérisson (2006) is conductedin order to understand the links between the specificities of the narrative mode andtheir effects on the space of the story, the "fish bowl". Ultimately, we answer thisquestion: In which way the narrative in the novel L’Élégance du hérisson allows toproperly render the metaphor of the "fish bowl".
