To our knowledge this is the first attempt to comprehensively gather information about various international efforts. We only considered such exercises where actual indicators were developed and used at least once. We begin with an extension of the Goodwin–Keen model incorporating time deposits, government bills, cash, and central bank reserves to the base model with loans and demand deposits, and use it to describe a fractional reserve banking system. With this chapter the book shifts from the contextualisation of the original study to the close examination of that study and its data. It presents ethnographic data on the discourses in the Bank relating to the ideas of national and organisational cultures. It examines how staff members compared and contrasted the cultures of the two merging organisations, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and how they construed the differences between Scottishness and Englishness, especially in terms of culturally encoded notions of ‘diffidence’ and ‘confidence’. It shows how all these notions of culture became bound up with the making sense of the tensions engendered by the merger and the general direction of organisational change. A ‘conceptual interlude’ in the middle of the chapter explores the social science concept of culture, arguing that this tends to be too narrow and ideational, and insufficiently attuned to the organisation of power in the generation of culture.

This chapter shows the results of studying the relationship of three microeconomic variables—cost, price, and quality of products—in Apparel SMEs in the city of Bogotá. The findings allow the authors to conclude that there is a narrow correlation between said variables, which determines that entrepreneurs in the sector must complete previous analyses and put strategies to maintain productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability in international markets in place before deciding to export their products. The development of a country can be reached if its companies reach it as well. It is understood that, for some managers and business owners, the initiative to export is a path to reach greater coverage and profitability, a complicated task given that it requires that companies better their levels of competitiveness measured by various independent factors. The study concludes by showing some tools that relate the aforementioned variables and that may better the competitiveness of SMEs with a focus on exportation.

This chapter provides detailed analysis of network performance from coverage, capacity, spectral-efficiency, power-efficiency, and cost-efficiency point of view. It also provides a fair comparison between the network rollout with traditional three-sector sites and higher order six-sector sites. Similarly, the impact of site densification along with sector densification is also studied in this chapter.

The major emphasis of the chapter is on how to automate communication among the students, parents, and faculties. The chapter also focuses on streamlining and providing the details of the performance of students for the campus interview and final placements to the companies. The dimensions of generation, dissemination, and absorption apply in the public and social sectors, as well as in the private sector. Smart Cities initiatives have generated a lot of possibilities, but to date have not delivered much social or business value. Much of the fault lies in not in the generation of technologies, but in the lack of dissemination and absorption of these initiatives beyond a narrow circle of specialists. Open Innovation can play a critical role in addressing the needs of rural villagers by enticing profit-seeking companies to engage in business development research in rural markets. These companies, if successful, become agents of dissemination and scaling via markets. Smart Villages is a promising new initiative for addressing the needs of villagers in poor, underdeveloped rural settings. However, the three dimensions of generation, dissemination, and absorption apply here as well.

Increased investment is essential to restore growth, but this will require higher savings as well as higher investment. Subject to the limited amount of help likely from rising current account deficits, domestic savings will need to rise at the expense of consumption. This will be unpopular. Those who claim that high corporate cash holdings mean that additional investment can be financed without more savings are confusing stocks with flows. Equally at fault are those who think that additional public sector investment will be painless because interest rates are so low. Companies in the US are the only major sector which is a habitual buyer of equities. Additional corporate investment will lead to fewer buy-backs, lower share prices, and higher household savings. This will narrow the savings gap, but fiscal deficits are highly correlatated with corporate net savings, so rising taxes are likely to be needed if investment rises.

This chapter joins Lury et al. in treating interdisciplinarity as a verb rather than a noun, as well as Davidson and Goldberg’s recasting of institutions as mobilizing networks rather than static structures. The chapter begins by defining the nature of talk across boundaries, including pidgin and creole forms of language, linguistic and social dynamics of communication, a culture that fosters them, epistemic dimensions of dialogue, and relational thinking. It then focuses on collective identity in teams and stages of collaboration, followed by a section on integration and differing assessments of its centrality to crossdisciplinary work. The chapter turns next to public engagement and community-based research, moving beyond narrow characterization of translation as application and transfer to highlight intersubjectivity, communicative action, and participatory research. It concludes by illustrating translation boundary work in two cross-sector case studies, an urban planning project and a waste management project involving both academics and community stakeholders.

Workaholism, in recent years, has become a regular behaviour pattern among professionals. While self-negligence is assumed as a hallmark of workaholism, empirical data in this case stands to be both narrow and paradoxical. Modern developments like high-speed data connections add more to this belief, as this makes it possible for employees who would like to work at any place and at any given point of time to work. Workaholism is found to affect several important domains of life. With regards to work domain, workaholics commonly seem to have poor associations with their peer/colleagues, most likely on the grounds that they often feel the need to control them and experience issues with delegating work. Given that the amount of time they invested in their work leaves little energy for them for other activities, also the social life outside work gets hampered. This chapter explores the relationship between workaholism, perceived work-related stress, different job conditions, and intensifying anxiety among IT professionals in Delhi/NCR.
