Abstract:
This article applies symbolic convergence theory (SCT) to the use of nasheeds by ‘jihadist groups’. SCT postulates that individuals come together to form a cohesive group with a shared consciousness and symbolic reality. SCT rests on fantasy themes. Fantasy themes are both a psychological and rhetorical mechanism to generate and organize interpretations of events. By and large, a nasheed is an Islamic-themed chant that often sings the praises of Allah and/or the Prophet Muhammad. Recently, nasheeds have been co-opted by ‘jihadist groups’ to motivate Muslims to join the ‘jihad’. An important co

Nasheeds outpace the era of Internet and Youtube. Jihadist poetry in the Islamist hymns can be seen as an extension of the 19th-century anticolonial style of poetry called qaseeda. Presented article shows that nasheeds were not always a significant element in the jihadi culture. The increase of their role was observed quite recently, after the outbreak of the “Arab Spring”. This article is a case study. It attempts to fill a gap in research on the IS’s propaganda materials. The major objective of this article is to investigate the phenomenon of jihadist naseeds, including their role in the ‘ji

Although most critics have focused on the overall negative aspect of Jack Wilton’s Italian tour in The Unfortunate Traveller (1594), as suggested in the title of Thomas Nashe’s prose fiction, the specificity of the narrator’s Venetian adventures should be examined more closely. This paper argues that Thomas Nashe’s representation of Venice needs to be reassessed in the context of Thomas More’s Utopia and the question of the ideal commonwealth. Notwithstanding Nashe’s reliance on pervasive irony, the author provides an image of the city-state which – thanks to a retrospective approach – puts th

The most widely disseminated narrative about the origins of Shakespeare’s Hamlet describes the playwright completing the second quarto (Q2) c. 1600; that play was passed to his company, divided into parts, performed, and memorially reconstructed by an actor or actors-cum-reporter(s), for playing in the provinces. This text was then printed as the first quarto (Q1) in 1603. The thesis begins by questioning how secure the evidence is firstly for the date of c. 1600, and secondly for memorial reconstruction as the explanation for the relationship of the quartos.
