Carrasco, Marginet Marta. "Valoración nutricional de jóvenes nadadoras de natación sincronizada." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/393946.
Full textINTRODUCTION: Synchronized swimming is a female, artistic, technical and combinative sport that requires great physical demands of its practitioners. Young swimmers constitute a risk population, especially when competitive goals to be achieved are greater. Currently, both nutritional requirements and dietetic habits assumed by these young female swimmers in the early stages of the elite sport are unknown. AIMS: To characterise the nutritional and hydration status of a group of young elite competitive swimmers. To propose nutritional guidelines for health and improvement of athletic performance in synchronised swimming. METHODS: The study is descriptive and transversal. 49 swimmers have been analysed during a precompetitive period: 34 Comen category (13,9±0,9 years) and 15 Junior category (16,7±0,9 years) swimmers, according to Spanish national sports rules. All the variables analysed (n=108) were classified into the following assessments: nutritional (n=33), somatic (n=31), haematological and biochemical (n=32), bioelectrical (n=6), hydration (n=6). All variables are expressed using basic descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum value). Kappa coefficient and Spearman correlation coefficient have been used to test the inter and intra observer validity and reliability of the dietary recording. T-student test (Hotelling T2 test in bioimpedance vector analysis) for independent samples has been used in the comparisons between both competitive categories, and also for related samples to assess possible differences pre and post-training session. Bivariate correlation has been used to check possible relationships between the behaviour of the bioelectrical vector, weight and the different water compartments. A p-value <0,05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The 24h-7d nutritional recall has resulted valid (Kappa r>0,75; p <0,0001; Spearman r>0,85; p <0,0001) and reliable (Kappa r?0,73; p <0,0001; Spearman r?0,80; p <0,0001), inter and intra subject. In both categories there has been an energy expenditure that exceeds the energy intake (p=0,0001). 85,7% and 60,0% of comen and junior swimmers respectively have recorded carbohydrate intake below 50%. Protein intake has been higher than the recommendations for the general population adjusted at this age (comen: 2,5±0,6 g/kg/day; junior: 2,2±0,4 g/kg/day). All swimmers have been placed under and above 50% in the vegetable and animal proteins intake, respectively. 89,8% of the swimmers has exceeded the 30% of the dietary reference intakes for lipids. None of them has reached the requirements of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and, oppositely, all of them have overcome intake of saturated fats. 15 swimmers registered significantly lower ferritin values, even at ranges between 6 and 8 ng/mL. Bioelectrical and hydration characterisation conducted for both competitive categories resulted in moderate dehydration processes induced by a typical standardised synchronised swimming training session. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the young swimmers have no proper nutritional habits, neither to maintain a state of healthy living nor to practice sport. It is necessary to amend these eating habits on the basis of proper education and nutritional follow-up. Somatic and haematological assessments, as well as bioelectrical testing and consequent monitoring of hydration status should help coaches and health professionals in the proper care of these young female athletes, making compatible the necessary balance between their health and ability to develop the maximum competitive achievements.

Waterpolo is a group aquatic sport that requires a series of psychosocial qualities, physical training, tactical fundamentals and technical grounds that will be assumed by the players progressively. A key technical content is the shooting, in which this thesis is based. The main goal is to check up to what point the finalization of the players, both right and left handed in the 1 and 2 waterpolo positions has a relation with the different categories of the variable shooting effectiveness during the matches in the Swimming World Championship in Barcelona 2013. We propose to hypothesis: the first one states that the left-handed players are more effective in the categories related with the goal and to obtain positive actions for the right-handed in the 1 and 2 positions, and the second one that indicates that the finalizations in 1 and 2 are less effective than in the other positions in the categories related with the goal. We check at the same time if the effectiveness of the goal achieved by right and left handed in the 1 and 2 positions varies as a function of the variables (gender, scoreboard status, type of phase during the game, side from where the pass is received, reception, among others). On the other hand, we precise the teams which performed more shoots from the 1 and 2 positions with left-handed and we determine the goal effectiveness as a function of the laterality and the final ranking. We studied 24 matches (12 female and 12 male) from the quarter finals of the World Championship in Barcelona 2013. The methodology used was observational, multidimensional, nomothetic and timely basis. We developed an ad hoc tool for observation through the computer software SportCode, that we also used to register the data. To validate the contents we appeal to the authority criteria creating a query that was answered by 12 trainers, and for the reliability we performed an inter-observational analysis by means of the kappa Cohen test with the IBM® SPSS® Statistics version 21.0 program. The results where obtained through the contingency tables and the descriptive statistics using the same program. The conclusions affirm that the first hypothesis is fulfilled in position 1 during all the game phases and with numerical superiority and for the 1 and 2 position during positional attack and counterattack. Regarding the second hypothesis, it is fulfilled for position 2 during all the game phases and counterattack and for position 1 in positional attack and numerical superiority.

Rovira, i. Berger Mireia.

Full textThe intracyclic acceleration variations (IAV) are the sum of the resultant braking and propelling forces, resulting in the swimming speed, thus becoming an important performance parameter. With the aim of analysing the usual acceleration profiles and kinematic stroke variables in endurance swimmers and the gender and speed differences, 12 males and 9 females elite open water swimmers swam three 500m freestyle tests at 85%, 90% and 95% of their 1500m pace. Using a 3D accelerometer device situated in the sacrum, 3 cycles per length were selected and the mean, SD, RMS, maximum, minimum and rang of the acceleration signal, as well as SR, SL and SI were determined. Statistical analysis (p<0,05) was made using Wilcoxon test and Spearman correlations. Results show a specific acceleration profile for each swimmer in all the tests and significant differences for stroke parameters in the 3 paces and between gender, as well as significant correlations with velocity except SL for men. Regarding the acceleration signal, in the horizontal axis, men show increasing and statistically different values in all variables, and differences from those of women except for the 90% values and all the RMS, because women had 90% values higher than the other two. For men, all of the variables except the minimum had high (rho>0,5) correlations, but only the mean, maximum and minimum for women. In the lateral axis, only the 85% variables for men and the 95% for women were different from the other two, but gender differences were significant in all paces. Correlations were smaller (rho 0,1-0,5) and only for minimum and rang in men, and maximum and mean for women. In the vertical axis, both genders show significant changes in the three paces in SD, maximum, minimum and rang, while only at 95% for the mean and RMS values. Gender differences were found for SD, minimum and rang. Women show high correlations for SD, maximum, minimum and rang, while only minimum for men. This study confirms the accelerometer possibilities to determine the propulsive resultant force, so being a good tool to improve swimmers technical and coordinative adaptations to each task.

Full textLung diffusing capacity describes the alveolar-capillary diffusion in the lungs, which increase linearly in relation to cardiac output, and decrease in the presence of lung interstitial disease. This thesis aimed to study whether aquatic exercise (swimming and artistic swimming) provoke a decrease in lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) during training; and whether altitude training camp or exercise in a short-term exposure to high-altitude modify lung diffusing capacity in elite swimmers. The first article describes the initial justification of this research. In this report case, we describe the circumstance faced by a female elite swimmers who had repeated dyspnoea associated to the intensity of the swimming exercise. She experimented a post-exercise reduction in spirometric values and the presence of ultrasound lung comets (ULCs), suggesting a swimming-induced pulmonary oedema (SIPO). The report case conclude that the administration of an inhibitor of the carbonic anhydrase (Acetazolamide) solved this condition. The second and third article form two parts of the same research. We conducted a follow-up during 10 swimming training session in 21 elite junior swimmers evaluating the DLCO pre- and post-training. We show a slight decrease in lung diffusing capacity (−2.5%) after training, showing that swimmers experience subclinical decrease in lung diffusing capacity. Also, there were a large inter-individual variability in the response of DLCO to swim training along the follow-up including 6 subjects showing a considerable average decrease (−5.6–11.2%), suggesting that, doctors and coaches should pay attention to the individual changes in alveolar-capillary diffusing capacity among elite swimmers. The fourth article describes the changes in DLCO during an artistic swimming session in 11 artistic swimmers. After the first part of the training (apnoeic swimming) there were an increase in lung diffusing capacity (+9.2%) and later, after the second part (choreography and figures) there were a decrease in lung diffusing capacity regarding to basal condition (−4.0%). Therefore, it could be interesting to monitor carefully individual response to exercise since there occur decreases in DLCO up to 20% after training. The fifth article studies the possible modifications in lung diffusing capacity during a 14-day swimming altitude training camp at 1,850 m. There were no changes in DLCO after the training camp, but a decrease in alveolar volume (VA) and an increase in transfer coefficient of the lung for carbon monoxide (KCO) occur. In contrast to the results found at sea level in the second and third article, a swimming training session in moderate altitude did not change lung diffusing capacity acutely in elite swimmers, but a posterior cycling session at normobaric-simulated 3,000 m reduced DLCO significantly (−10%). The sixth article reports the lung diffusing response to 30-min moderate intensity interval exercise in a short-term exposure to high-altitude (4,000 m) in elite swimmers. There were no changes in DLCO although elite swimmers showed large decrease in SpO2 (72 ± 5 %) and a large increase in HR (139 ± 9 beats·min-1) at the end of the exercise. The seventh article evaluates whether there are changes in alveolar-capillary diffusion after different modalities of exercise, both at sea level (SL) and high-altitude (HA) in 11 healthy subjects. At SL, lung diffusing capacity largely increased after 30-s maximal exercise in a cycle ergometer, although the O2-dependence was small during anaerobic exercise. In contrast, DLCO did not change after 15-min moderate intensity continuous exercise at SL. Later, at HA, and similar to the previous study, an acute protocol of exercise at HA did not modify lung diffusing capacity in healthy subjects, suggesting that short-term exercise modalities at high-altitude are well covered by the functional properties of healthy individuals’ lungs. Lastly, the eighth article describes the pulmonary functional capabilities in elite swimmers, artistic swimmers and water polo players, showing higher lung volumes and diffusing capacity than the reference values by height and age. In this article, we discuss that swimming-based sports could be beneficial to improve the pulmonary function in many different segments of the population (from subjects with chronic pathologies to elite athletes) due to the physical properties of the water and physiological implications of the practice of swimming.

This thesis is a theoretical and empirical approach to the updated methodology for proprioception training. The theoretical part develops the state of affairs in the study of proprioception from different perspectives, the particulars of the lumbar spine and the characteristics of proprioception in this area of the spine. It’s summarized the most important aspects of training theory and the needs of lumbar proprioceptive training in competitive swimming. The empirical part is intended as a starting point for experimental research on the most appropriate methodology for the conscious proprioception training. It performs a specific design for improved lumbar spine control on underwater swimming technique, which tries to intercede on lumbar range of motion in the sagittal plane and positioning accuracy within the same plane. It applies, evaluates and compares the effects of exercises’ administration during 75 sessions over 2 to 3 calendar months, with two different methods of execution: First one blindfolded and focusing on the lower back and second one with eyes opened and no different condition to fulfill the technical execution. The results show that the method improves proprioception-related variables is proposed conducting the exercises with eyes closed focusing on the lower back, while with eyes opened this variables get worse towards the control group. Both methods lead to significant improvements in lumbar range of motion in the worked plane. Thus, the process reveals the need to update the conceptual and methodological treatment of proprioception after an intervention in swimming, and guides about the basis for its application in other sports.

The first part of the thesis is a journey through the different theoretical perspectives that underlie those teaching strategies based on the involvement of students in the learning process. At the second part, and based use of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the proposal is validated through the observation of different sessions which nine professional teaching swimming have applied to their practices.

The present study aims to evaluate the relationship between values, motivational orientation, motives and the commitment of the trainer and the swimmer to practice swimming. These relationships are analyzed to establish possible values and motivations that influence the commitment that the swimmer with physical disability establishes with the practice of this sport. To do this, 77 swimmers and 23 coaches from 21 swimming clubs in Catalan and Spanish territory are studied by applying the CVS Schwartz values questionnaire (Schwartz and Bilsky, 1990), which collects the values that guide life; The EMD questionnaire (Pelletier y cols., 1995) that reflects the behavior and type of motivation of coaches and athletes; The MPAM-R questionnaire (Ryan y cols., 1997), which evaluates the reasons why coaches and swimmers practice swimming, the Spanish version of the Sport Questionaire-SCQ (Scanlan y cols., Both collectives and predictors, and the sport climate questionnaire, to assess the perception of support for the autonomy that swimmers have over their coaches (Deci and Ryan, 1985). The results show that the age factor is a determining factor in the interests of swimmers and coaches. As for the swimmers, they are more socially focused (in the peer group) and the coaches are more focused on the work aspect (on growing professionally). Common values are identified between the two groups as autonomy, health and personal work. The motivation of the coaches is more oriented to know and the one of the swimmers to get things and to experiment. Commitment occurs when swimmers get amused by what they do and when the coach gives them autonomy to do so.

Full textThe aim of the Thesis is to study the improvement of fish farming through the optimization of the use of nutrients. We determined how to optimize the capacity to use dietary carbohydrates in two species of carnivorous fish, rainbow trout (O. mykiss) and sea bream (S. aurata). Firstly, we tried to increase the energy demand of fish through a sustained moderate exercise, and then we varied nutrients distribution through the day. We kept animals in these conditions and after we studied the relationship between nutrition and metabolism in fish by analyzing animals tissue composition and tracing the nutrients with C13-starch and N15-protein. We also studied the changes in the muscle fibers. The studies included in this Thesis allow us to conclude that trout, subjected to sustained swimming, increases the use of dietary carbohydrate and also augments the lipid and glycogen deposits in muscles. In trout under sustained-exercise, a noticeable of carbohydrates were transformed to lipids in the liver and other amount was oxidized in muscles. The total N15 recovery on exercised fish was mainly in protein fraction of both muscle (red & with), at 24 hours after forced-feeding, shows that sustained swimming increases protein deposition resulting in a protein sparing. On the other hand, sea bream has a good capacity to use dietary carbohydrate for energy production, also showing a great nutrient turnover under exercise. Greater retention of dietary protein under conditions of sustained exercise demonstrated a sparing-effect for the use of carbohydrates, preventing an excess of lipid deposition. In addition, the hypertrophic growth of white muscle under conditions of activity explains the growth of the sea bream. This demonstrates that both species show marked differences in nutrient use. Furthermore, when you combine the increased activity of the sea bream showed during the day with the composition of the diet, it is observed an increase of the metabolic interconversion and efficiency of protein retention in the white muscle. The administration of a carbohydrate-rich diet in the morning did not impair the incorporation of dietary protein or deposition in muscle or growth. Stable isotopes showed that postprandial metabolic changes of distribution and fate of nutrients marked are due to diet, yet are conditioned by the last intake received.

Full textThis research aims to discover the main elements of the educational interaction favoring or hindering the learning of the aquatic skills by children. This purpouse involve the theoretical study of various elements. On one hand, the research gives an overview of water activities focusing on the history and culture that ultimately contributed to the existence of a certain type of educational practices with infants in the aquatic environment. The research also studies the notion of water through its physical, cultural and biological dimensions, that shows us the water as a pluridimensional environment. This first chapter allows the author to take a stand about the model of water activities for babies that should be. In a second moment the research develops the notion of adult-child interaction. This in-depth analysis of the sociocultural perspective is studied by some reference authors as Vygotskii, Valsiner, Rogoff and Cole. The research also develops an affective and emotional vision of interaction by studying Bowlby, Ainsworth and Wallon. This conceptual framework defines the major interest issues of the interaction in the aquatic environment and defines the educational context and the methodological study approach. The research objectives are lead by four child-adult interaction cases study, which are videotaped during the four months that takes a course of aquatic activities for babies. The research makes an important effort to define some consistent categories enough to allow a depth study of the cases wich can be generalized. So the categorization is based in quantitative data wich can be processed. This data yield several results that illustrate which aspects of interaction encourage the development of the children aquatic skills and which ones hinder this motor learning. Finally the research results are debated specifically focusing on the educational aspects of the interaction wich provide considerations for developing specific educational practices in this educational scenario.
