Abstract:
The 2014 update to the U. S. Geological Survey National Seismic Hazard Model in California introduces a new earthquake rate model and new ground motion models (GMMs) that give rise to numerous changes to seismic hazard throughout the state. The updated earthquake rate model is the third version of the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF3), wherein the rates of all ruptures are determined via a self-consistent inverse methodology. This approach accommodates multifault ruptures and reduces the overprediction of moderate earthquake rates exhibited by the previous model (UCERF2). UCERF3 introduces new faults, changes to slip or moment rates on existing faults, and adaptively smoothed gridded seismicity source models, all of which contribute to significant changes in hazard. New GMMs increase ground motion near large strike-slip faults and reduce hazard over dip-slip faults. The addition of very large strike-slip ruptures and decreased reverse fault rupture rates in UCERF3 further enhances these effects.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Joseph Stanley-Brown (1858–1941) played a quiet but important role in the formation of the U. S. Geological Survey as a secretary of John Wesley Powell and James A. Garfield. He was also a long-time (40-year) editor of the Bulletin of the Geological Society of America, and provided financial oversight of the Penrose Bequest for the Geological Society of America during the Great Depression. He made a number of other geological contributions as well. The remains of this geologist and financier are interred in the crypt of the Garfield Monument, near those of the President whom he once served as a secretary. That President was also knowledgeable about geology and was a champion of geological surveys on the state and national level.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND:Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are increasing concerns for First Nations peoples in Canada. Although hospital utilization for asthma and COPD among First Nations peoples has been increasing, the prevalence of asthma or wheezing is comparable to national averages.OBJECTIVES:A pilot study was conducted to determine the prevalence of impaired lung function in school-aged First Nations children.PATIENTS AND METHODS:A First Nations community in northern Alberta was selected to participate. Consent forms and a school health survey were completed by parents or guardians. Children with consent completed spirometry at school, and results were compared with predicted values.RESULTS:A total of 36 children participated (response rate 70.6%). Of these, 19.4% of parents reported that their child had received a physician diagnosis of asthma at some point in their life; only 28.6% had a parental report of still having asthma. Parents smoked in 73.1% of the children's homes. The mean (± SD) percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) over forced vital capacity (FVC) was 82.6%±6.9% (94.4%±0.08% of predicted). Evidence of airflow obstruction was found in 25% of the children. Parental report of the child ever having asthma was associated with impaired lung function (OR 3.20; P=0.033). Children in a home with reported mold exposure were less likely to have impaired lung function (OR 0.68; P=0.030).CONCLUSIONS:Many children in this study already have established airflow obstruction and may be at increased risk for asthma or COPD. Exposure to mold appeared to be protective. Further research is needed to evaluate the lung health concerns of this population.

Abstract:
This is a brief interstitial introduction by art historian Kim A. Munson describing the rediscovery of original comic art following the Pop Art movement and influential publications of the late 1960’s. A wave of large survey shows were organized that took on a more formal appearance and established a loose canon of comic artists. The National Cartoonist Society’s Cavalcade of Comics toured the US. Well reviewed shows of the early 70s included The Art of the Comic Strip (U of Maryland, 1971), The Comics as an Art Form (U of Nevada Las Vegas), and 75 Years of the Comics (New York Cultural Center). Many shows included underground comix. Comics speciality museums opened and flourished, such as the Museum of Comic Art (Rye Brook, NY, 1975), The Cartoon Art Museum (San Francisco, 1987), and the ToonSeum (Pittsburgh, 2007). Graf, William L. "Annual Plutonium Budget for the Rio Grande." In Plutonium and the Rio Grande. Oxford University Press, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195089332.003.0013.

Abstract:
A mean annual plutonium budget for the Northern Rio Grande provides an accounting of the amounts of plutonium moving into and out of various reaches of the river during a typical year. Such a budget is a basis for assessing the rates of plutonium transport and the location of storage along the river. The budget presented in the following pages is for bedload and suspended sediments. It does not include plutonium in water because water-borne plutonium is such a small portion of the total in the system (as discussed in Chapter 7). The budget as calculated here requires data concerning sediment and plutonium concentrations in the sediment. The sediment discharge data that are available from U. S. Geological Survey gaging sites (Chapter 4) define the overall framework for budget construction. A reasonably detailed picture is possible for the river system from the Rio Grande at Embudo and the Rio Chama at Chamita southward to the Rio Grande at San Marcial (for locations, see Figure 3.9) where the river empties into Elephant Butte Reservoir. Data collected by Los Alamos National Laboratory and published in the annual surveillance reports by the laboratory’s Environmental Studies Group and later by the Environmental Surveillance Group provide plutonium concentrations for bedload and suspended sediments. The calculations for each site in this study used mean values of plutonium concentrations from all measurements at or near the site. Table 8.1 reviews the sources of plutonium concentration data for each of the sediment-gaging sites in the regional budget calculations. Unfortunately, the sites for collecting the plutonium data were not always colocated with the gaging sites that produced the sediment discharge data. In addition, most of the plutonium concentration data are for bedload sediments because of the manner in which the workers collected samples. In some cases, the best estimates of plutonium concentrations in suspended load for gaging sites are from concentrations found in sediments of the nearest reservoir downstream because those sediments are likely to have been in suspension before their emplacement on reservoir floors. The assumption that the mean concentration is a useful representative value seems reasonable given that in those reaches with relatively large amounts of data, concentration values do not show temporal or geographic trends.
