Abstract:
ALA leads national #eBooksForAll campaignAccess to digital content has long been a sore spot for libraries. When Macmillan Publishers announced an eight-week embargo on new eBook titles sold to libraries, the public outcry was extraordinary. In response, ALA launched the #eBooksForAll petition campaign at the Digital Book World conference in September. Coverage of libraries proliferated in news outlets across the country as more and more library systems led their own local campaigns to oppose Macmillan’s new policy. Just days before the embargo took effect on November 1, 2019, ALA hand delivered more than 160,000 signatures to CEO John Sargent.

The publication in 1859 of Charles Darwin's epoch-making book On the Origin of Species touched off a national debate that continues to divide American society. Scarcely a week passes without some evolution-related story appearing in the news: religious leaders declaring the scientific legitimacy of biological evolution, politicians expressing their belief in divine creation, local school boards wrangling over the teaching of origins, professors being ordered to refrain from questioning evolution in the classroom, state legislatures debating whether to fire teachers who present evolution as a fact, biology textbooks carrying disclaimers denying the factual basis of evolution, scientists claiming that they have discovered evidence of Intelligent Design in the natural world, and public-opinion polls showing that nearly half of all Americans believe in the recent special creation of the first humans.

Abstract:
This book contains a condensed account, in three languages (French, German, English) of a theatre project for adolescents that was in preparation over a two-year period, and that resulted in a week-long residential workshop for sixty young people from six partner countries at a theatre in Forbach, on the Franco-German border in April 2009. The initial idea for a European intercultural theatre project emerged from ANRAT, the French national association for theatre action and research, who decided to focus their efforts on young migrants in the European education system. What evolved was a project in which approximately 60 adolescents speaking 24 languages between them came together with 9 theatre practitioners from the 6 countries represented (France, Spain, Greece, Holland, Germany, the United Kingdom). The work of the group was in turn followed and observed by 5 researchers drawn from the partner countries. The project, developed for use with young people who had recently emigrated to Europe, aimed to answer two questions: The book aims to show how these questions were answered in the course of the ‘intercultural meetings’ it describes. In the opening section, the author sets out the theoretical framework and the research methodology. This section is sketchy and ...

The theme for 1996 was "Eternal Eldorado: Literature from Latin America and the Caribbean." Even though many booksellers expressed their disappointment with this subject, arguing that the Latin American literary boom had long passed, publishers were not deterred. A great number of publications on Latin America and particularly the (Dutch) Caribbean appeared. Some of these books would have been published anyway and now could take advantage of all the accompanying media publicity, others were produced expressly with the Eldorado theme in mind.

Abstract:
In this article, on the basis of materials of archive of the State book chamber of the Republic of Bashkortostan, administration of Ufa Federal postal communication service of the Republic of Bashkortostan – branch of FSPA «Mail of Russia», as well as data from the current archives of a number of areas with compact settlement of the Chuvash population the authors carried out the study of national-linguistic needs of the Chuvash in the field of printed products. In two regions – Aurgazinsky and Bizhbulyaksky – with a high proportion of the Chuvash, newspapers in the Chuvash language are published. In other regions, in order to meet their national-language needs, the Chuvash population subscribes to periodicals from the Republic of Chuvashia in the Chuvash language.

The range of such periodicals represented a wide range of genres according to the interests. If teachers and educators of Chuvash schools in Bashkortostan mostly subscribed to educational and methodical literature in the Chuvash language, a significant part of subscribers preferred newspapers and magazines about the life and everyday routine of their fellow-countrymen in the Republic of the same name.

During the period of perestroika of the Soviet society in October 1989, Bashkortostan started publishing a Republican newspaper in the Chuvash language «Ural Sassi» («Voice of the Urals») with a frequency of once a week, which received a massive demand among the Chuvash population of the Republic. The analysis of subscriptions to periodicals in the Chuvash language in the Republic of Bashkortostan at the present stage shows that the Chuvash population reads less in the language of the mother ethnic group in favor of reading newspapers and magazines in the Russian language.

Abstract:
IntroductionLow back pain (LBP) is one of the largest and most frequent public health problems worldwide. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is a frequently used non-pharmacological therapy for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. However, there is little high-quality scientific evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of PBMT in the treatment of patients with chronic LBP in the short, medium and long term. Therefore, the objective of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effects of PBMT in patients with chronic non-specific LBP in the short, medium and long term. Methods and analysesThis is a prospectively registered, two-arm randomised placebo-controlled trial with blinded patients, assessors and treatment providers. One hundred and forty-eight patients with chronic non-specific LBP will be recruited. Treatment sessions will be provided three times a week for 4 weeks (totaling 12 sessions) with patients receiving either placebo or active PBMT. For ethical reasons, all patients, regardless of treatment allocation, will also receive an information booklet based on ‘The Back Book’. Clinical outcomes will be measured at baseline, at the end of treatment, as well as 3, 6 and 12 months after randomisation. The primary outcomes will be pain intensity and disability measured after 12 sessions of treatment. The secondary outcomes will be pain intensity and disability measured at 3, 6 and 12 months after randomisation, in addition to specific disability and global perceived effect in all time points.Ethics and disseminationThe study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Universidade Cidade de São Paulo. The results will be disseminated through scientific publications and presentations at national and international scientific meetings.Trial registration numberNCT03089424.

Abstract:
The National Strategy for Financial Education, created in 2010 through Federal Decree 7,397/2010 and renewed by Federal Decree 10,393, was developed as a multi-sector mobilization initiative with the goal of promoting financial education actions in Brazil. As a multi-sector strategy, a governance committee was created, including the participation of both public and private sector representatives. The participation of the private sector in the development of the ENEF occurs through an array of actions, such as the construction of proprietary education projects and participation at the National Financial Education Week, as well as support for education projects organized by civil society organizations. However, it also arose through a more direct need, along two main lines. The first initiated in 2012 with the constitution of AEF-Brasil (Association of Financial Education in Brazil, a Civil Society Organization of Public Interest – or OSCIP in the Portuguese acronym used – created to develop and scale projects involving financial education and developed according to the premises of the ENEF, namely: free access to beneficiaries and no form of product or service recommendation. The second was direct sponsorship of projects developed by AEF-Brasil. From 2012 to 2020, a series of strategies and projects were implemented by AEF-Brasil, each in partnership with and funded by major companies, international entities and investor funds. The projects are detailed in Chapter 2 of this book, highlighting the diversity of publics and the initiatives developed by AEF-Brasil.

Abstract:
The introduction presents the main question posed in the book: how does economic activity flourish in contexts with high corruption and weak rule-of-law institutions? This introductory chapter argues that national-level economic statistics and governance indicators conceal islands of order at local levels of society. By focusing on bazaar dynamism in one such country, this book moves away from narratives of crisis, chaos, conflict, and investigates the meanings and practices related to order among those working at bazaars. The introduction briefly summarizes the book’s argument, the two main bazaar cases, and implications.

Abstract:
At Kansas State University, there has been a concentrated effort to evolve the institution into one of the nation's top 50 research public universities. One small part of that involves the rollout of NVivo to the university's faculty, staff, and graduate students. By the second year of the site license, the campus was on its own to provide training. This effort involved multiple live face-to-face (F2F) trainings and the use of a multimedia e-book. “Using NVivo: An Unofficial and Unauthorized Primer” (http://scalar.usc.edu/works/using-nvivo-an-unofficial-and-unauthorized-primer/index) was written over a several week period (hyper-fast agile development) and released on the Scalar platform in Fall Semester 2014. This chapter addresses how a designed e-book, built on a Semantic Web-friendly platform, harnesses the power of multimedia, digital repositories, the Surface Web, and crowd-sourced feedback.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes some key findings of the book, discuss the challenges for, and opportunities of, the Sustainable Development Goals by identifying several conditions that might determine their successful implementation, and also suggest some possible avenues for further research. The approach of “global governance through goals”—and the Sustainable Development Goals as a prime example—is marked by a number of key characteristics, including its detachment from the international legal system, weak institutional arrangement, global inclusion and comprehensive goal-setting process, and granting much leeway to national choices and preferences. Those characteristics are reflected in the challenges for implementation, including those of developing indicators and institutional arrangements, tailoring implementation at national or stakeholder levels, and securing policy integration. Further research is needed in addressing these challenges, which requires inter- and transdisciplinary research development.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the main elements of the research design for the empirical chapters in the book. Starting with the event reports provided by the Mass Mobilization in Autocracies Database, the chapter develops a research design that studies variation in local Internet penetration and anti-regime protest. The chapter motivates the choice of the sub-national unit of observation (cities), and temporal units of analysis (years, weeks). It introduces a new measure of Internet penetration derived from network measurements, developed in collaboration with computer scientists. The high level of spatial and temporal resolution allows for one of the most detailed analyses so far in the study of mass protest. The chapter also introduces the statistical models used for the analysis. The book relies on Bayesian multilevel models, a framework that takes into account the hierarchical structure of the data and has advantages in the analysis of data with skewed dependent variables.

Abstract:
The introduction lays out the relevance of the research topic—the political leadership of the president of the EU Commission. Explicating the empirical puzzle—the office’s peculiar combination of strong political demands, weak institutional powers, and potential for strong political leadership—it poses the operational research question: What makes political leadership in supranational governance successful and to what extent (and why) do Commission presidents differ in their leadership performance? A brief review of the literature on the European Commission presidency accompanies a survey of core themes in the study of political leadership, in particular beyond national constituencies. Finally, the introduction presents the research design and data set as well as the study’s main findings, and outlines how the rest of the book is structured.

The film combines a popular format potentially appealing to a wide audience and complex philosophical content which approaches ‘border’ in a manner typical of weak (rather than dominant) narratives. As such, it represents a rare example of amalgamating various registers, thereby harbouring a potential to transform broader cultural imagination. Both thematically and aesthetically, Sauna makes us rethink the means available for engaging one’s own national, regional and transnational (hi)stories. A similar qualification applies to the films analysed throughout this book, offering a valuable testing ground for what has been defined as boundary discourses, and reaching beyond the paradigm of the Eastern noir.

Abstract:
This chapter sets the background and context for the rest of the book. It talks about the history and progress of community-based health care (CBHC), and the many emerging challenges we now face. These challenges include a lack of trained health workers, poor planning and capacity at the national level, and weak or non-existent health systems. It tackles the question of how CBHC can help meet these challenges. It describes the special features of CHBC, and explains how CBHC is an integral part of well-functioning health systems, including primary health care. In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it shows how CBHC can tackle poverty, a root cause of ill health. The chapter discusses how we can focus on strengthening and scaling up existing programmes, aim for long-term development, and identify some ‘quick wins’.

Abstract:
The current collaborative National Science Foundation Research Experience for Teachers (NSF-RET) site placed seventeen in-service and pre-service teachers with research mentors at one of the three regional universities WSU, CSU, and UD to work on engineering research projects. These research projects were chosen in such a way so that they were relevant to regional strengths in advanced manufacturing and materials. In addition to research, the RET teachers participated in various professional development (PD) activities such as “boot camp” facilitated by ASM Materials Education Foundation prior to the start of their research experience, field trips, seminars given by guest speakers and group work that produced K-12 curriculum related to the teams’ research experience. The teacher groups also presented the developed STEM curriculum and the final laboratory project results, and provided regular guided reflections regarding their efforts during the six-week program. This paper presents a brief overview of the collaborative RET project and details the achievement during the first project year. Emphasis is given to the collaborative PD activities of all seventeen teachers and the research projects performed by the two WSU RET groups comprised of four in-service and two pre-service teachers.

Oza, Shardul, and Jacobus Cilliers. What Did Children Do During School Closures? Insights from a Parent Survey in Tanzania. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-ri_2021/027.

Abstract:
In this Insight Note, we report results of a phone survey that the RISE Tanzania Research team conducted with 2,240 parents (or alternate primary care-givers) of primary school children following the school closures in Tanzania. After the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Tanzania on 16 March 2020, the government ordered all primary schools closed the following day. Schools remained closed until 29 June 2020. Policymakers and other education stakeholders were concerned that the closures would lead to significant learning loss if children did not receive educational support or engagement at home. To help stem learning loss, the government promoted radio, TV, and internet-based learning content to parents of school-age children. The primary aims of the survey were to understand how children and families responded to the school closures, the education related activities they engaged in, and their strategies to send children back to school. The survey also measures households’ engagement with remote learning content over the period of school closures. We supplement the findings of the parent survey with insights from interviews with Ward Education Officers about their activities during the school closures. The survey sample is comprised of primary care-givers (in most cases, parents) of students enrolled in Grades 3 and 4 during the 2020 school year. The survey builds on an existing panel of students assessed in 2019 and 2020 in a nationally representative sample of schools.4 The parent surveys were conducted using Computer Assisted Telephonic Interviewing (CATI) over a two-week period in early September 2020, roughly two months after the re-opening of primary schools. We report the following key findings from this survey: *Almost all (more than 99 percent) of children in our sample were back in school two months after schools re-opened. The vast majority of parents believed it was either safe or extremely safe for their children to return to school. *Only 6 percent of households reported that their children listened to radio lessons during the school closures; and a similar fraction (5.5 percent) tuned into TV lessons over the same period. Less than 1 percent of those surveyed accessed educational programmes on the internet. Households with access to radio or TV reported higher usage. *Approximately 1 in 3 (36 percent) children worked on the family farm during the closures, with most children working either 2 or 3 days a week. Male children were 6.2 percentage points likelier to work on the family farm than female children. *Households have limited access to education materials for their child. While more than 9 out of 10 households have an exercise book, far fewer had access to textbooks (35 percent) or own reading books (31 percent). *One in four parents (24 percent) read a book to their child in the last week.
