In this study, we observed the flowering phenology, breeding system, pollination and seed germination of four species of Calligonum (C. calliphysa, C. rubicundum, C. densum and C. ebinuricum) in the Turpan Eremophytes Botanic Garden, China. Our results showed that the species had overlapping flowering phenologies and were pollinated by similar pollination agents. Their breeding systems were self-compatible, and with signs of outbreeding, but not of hybridization with each other; the main isolation mechanism was post-zygotic isolation and they also had high seed germination rates. AbstractOver the last few decades botanic gardens worldwide have been encouraged to adopt complementary measures for the conservation of plant species from their own regions, combining in situ conservation efforts with ex situ methods, both in cultivation and in storage. This integrated approach is particularly important for botanic gardens in the tropics, which face the challenge of conserving a highly diverse and often threatened flora. We gathered information on the occurrence of threatened species in the natural vegetation reserves of 21 Brazilian botanic gardens. The data were collected f

The living collections of botanic gardens can be described as dynamic, varying over time to suit the demands of the institute. The majority of gardens throughout the world have insufficient resources to maintain ever-increasing collections. In order to keep collections meaningful to research and conservation activities and to distribute plant material in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) they need to be carefully directed; a mechanism to facilitate this is the process of evaluation. Evaluation is the periodic assessment of part of the collection to determine whether

A call for design proposals for three features for the National Garden was held in October, 1992 by the National Fund for the U.S. Botanic Garden. The competition called for refinement of an existing master plan developed by EDAW, a landscape architectural firm, or the design of a new concept for the National Garden. This creative project chose to develop a new master and to document the research, process, and assumptions that lead to the final design. The research will focus on the examination of the site and it's history (Washington, D.C.) and examination into the history, evolution, and rel

Abstract In this chapter the future of garden tourism is examined. Botanic gardens have multiple roles but principally education, environmental, and recreation, and it is under these three roles that garden tourism's future is evaluated. Case studies are presented of (1) the National Botanic Garden of Wales as a floral resource for pollinating insects; and (2) the high school botany teaching program of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, Florida, USA.

It mentions Dr. John Coakley Lettsom, who portrayed his domestic garden as a place full of trees and plants that he considered to be both ornamental and productive, as well as a section organized scientifically using the Linnaean system of classification.
