Through the National Registration Bureau (NRB), the Malawi government introduced mandatory registration and the issuance of National Identity Cards (IDs) to its bona fide Malawian citizens aged 16 and above, in accordance with the Registration Act of 2010. This administration is currently carried out manually in a few designated National Registration Bureau (NRB) offices. As a result, citizens find it time-consuming and congested to renew their IDs in case of loss, damage, or expiration. This study reflects the value that citizens place on their own nation. It depicts the way citizens live, where government bureaucrats and industrial employers enforce their authority. Their actions often place them in opposition to a citizen. W. H. Auden, in his poem “The Unknown Citizen,” critiques the degrading effects of bureaucratic domination and misunderstanding. The individual’s rights as a citizen is reduced to an anonymous figure defined more by the Bureau of Statistics than by personal identity. Improved interactions lower the expected burden of engaging with the state actor, promoting compliance. This motivates citizens to believe compliance is worthwhile, increasing trust in the state actor. We then empirically assess the r
