Guarneri, Michael. Vampires in Italian Cinema, 1956-1975. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474458115.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book takes as its subject a corpus of thirty-three vampire movies made, distributed and exhibited during the peak years of film production in Italy, and certified to be of Italian nationality by state institutions such as the Italian Show Business Bureau and the Italian Film Censorship Office. Positioning itself at the intersection of Italian film history, horror studies and cultural studies, the book asks: why, and how, is the protean, transnational and transmedial figure of the vampire appropriated by Italian cinema practitioners between 1956 and 1975? Or, more concisely, what do the vampires of post-war Italian cinema mean? The aim is to show that – in spite of Italian vampire cinema’s imported and derivative nature, and its great reliance on profits coming from distribution on the international market – Italian cinematic vampires reflect their national zeitgeist from the economic miracle of the late 1950s to the mid-1970s austerity, twenty years of large political and socio-economic change in which gender politics were also in relative flux. The result of an original research into film production data, film censorship files, screenplays, trade papers, film magazines and vampire-themed paraliterature, the book leaves the well-trod track of award-winning art films to shed light on some of the so-called ‘lower forms’ of cinematic culture, looking for the economic backbone and cultural instrumentality of post-war Italian cinema in the run-of-the-mill genre movies rushed through a cheap production and into domestic and international distribution to parasitically (vampirically?) exploit a given commercially successful film.

Thomson, C. Claire, Isak Thorsen, and Pei-Sze Chow, eds. A History of Danish Cinema. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474461122.001.0001.

Abstract:
The contribution of Denmark to world cinema has been substantial: not just relative to the size of the population, but by any measure. In the silent period, the pioneering work of the company Nordisk Films Kompagni, and the emergence of early film stars such as Asta Nielsen, secured Denmark a place as a leading film nation. The auteur Carl Theodor Dreyer won global renown during his five-decade career. Documentary and educational filmmaking flourished after the Second World War; the late 1980s brought successive Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film; and Dogme 95 aimed to reinvigorate cinema by stripping filmmaking back to basics. The notoriety of arthouse auteur Lars von Trier has been complemented by the emergence of a generation of Danish filmmakers whose work is characterised by compelling stories, high production values and a strong sense of realism. This book covers all these aspects of Danish cinema history, and also encompasses a range of genres, figures and institutions that have received little coverage in English to date, such as children’s films, popular comedies, immigrant filmmakers, women documentarists, and Greenlandic cinema. The contributors situate filmmakers, genres and trends in their cultural and historical context, taking account of the influence of national film institutions and policies. The volume is organised into four parts: i) From the first ‘Golden Age’ to the Occupation; ii) National Genres; iii) Auteurs and Institutions of the New Golden Age; and iv) Decentring and Diversifying Danish Cinema.

JoanDymond, Erica. Grief in Contemporary Horror Cinema. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2022. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666995114.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the course of the past two decades, horror cinema around the globe has become increasingly preoccupied with the concept of loss. Grief in Contemporary Horror Cinema: Screening Loss examines the theme of grief as it is represented in both indie and mainstream films, including works such as Jennifer Kent's watershed film The Babadook, Juan Antonio Bayona's award-sweeping El orfanato, Ari Aster's genre-straddling Midsommar, and Lars von Trier's visually stunning Melancholia. Analyzing depictions of grief ranging from the intimate grief of a small family to the collective grief of an entire nation, the essays illustrate how these works serve to provide unity, catharsis, and—sometimes—healing.

Abstract:

Kumao, Heidi. Heidi Kumao: Real and Imagined. Maize Books, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3998/mpub.12465060.

Full text
Abstract:
Heidi Kumao: Real and Imagined documents and contextualizes narrative fabric works and animations from Kumao’s 2020 solo exhibition at the University of Michigan’s Stamps Gallery. Using fabric cutouts and stitching of everyday objects, Kumao invents a tactile visual vocabulary that distills unspoken aspects of ordinary exchanges into accessible narrative images. Weaving in her experiences as an Asian American woman, artist, and educator, Kumao creates poetic and playful open-ended visual haikus, generating a range of associations to current events, gender roles, and institutional power structures. Captured midstream, interactions from intimate relationships, medical procedures, the workplace, and the political sphere are suspended in time within felt film stills. Real and Imagined presents the reader with an opportunity to experience this remarkable oeuvre of over thirty fabric works and video animations. For over thirty years, Kumao has developed an expanded art practice that includes animations, video installations, photographs, machine art, and fabric works that give physical form to the intangible parts of our lives: our emotions, psychological states, memories, thinking patterns. Her hybrid artworks have included electromechanical girl’s legs that “misbehave,” video installations about surviving confinement, surreal, experimental stop motion puppet animations, performative staged photographs, and hand crafted cinema machines. She has exhibited her award-winning artwork in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including the Art Science Museum Singapore, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the Museum of Image and Sound (São Paulo) and the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires. Her work is in permanent and private collections including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Arizona State University Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Exploratorium in San Francisco. She has received fellowships and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Creative Capital Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She is a professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This exhibition catalogue marks the first significant publication on Kumao’s work and includes a selection of works from across her career. It includes written contributions by: Srimoyee Mitra, curator and Director of the Stamps Gallery and NYC-based art critic; Wendy Vogel; an interview between the artist and writer Lynn Love; and poems by the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize Award winner Marilyn Chin.

Abstract:
Social-issue documentaries are art for civic imagination and social critique. Today, audiences experience documentaries that interrogate topics like sexual assault in the military (The Invisible War), the opioid crisis (Heroin(e)), racial injustice (13th), government surveillance (Citizenfour), animal captivity (Blackfish), and more. Along a continuum of social change, these intimate nonfiction films have changed national conversations, set media agendas, mobilized communities and policymakers, and provided new portals into social problems and lived experiences—accessed by expanding audiences in a transforming dual marketplace that includes mainstream entertainment outlets and grassroots venues. Against the activism backdrop of the participatory networked culture, the contemporary function of social-issue documentaries in civic practice is embodied also in parallel community engagement—the active role of civil society, communities, and individuals—that has dynamically evolved over recent decades. Story Movements: How Documentaries Empower People and Inspire Social Change explores the functions and public influence of social-issue documentary storytelling in the networked era. At the book’s core is an argument about documentary’s vital role in storytelling culture and civic practice with an impulse toward justice and equity. Intimate documentaries illuminate complex realities and stories that disrupt dominant cultural narratives and contribute new ways for publics to contemplate and engage with social challenges. Written by a documentary producer, scholar, and director of the Center for Media & Social Impact, the book features original interviews with award-winning filmmakers and field leaders to reveal the motivations and influence of some of most lauded, eye-opening stories of the evolving documentary age.

Nazer, Hisham. Power of a Third Kind. Praeger, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400699740.

Full text
Abstract:
This thought-provoking book points out that the most significant change in international relations in the 20th century was not the defeat of communism, nor the end of the Cold War, but the huge advances in communications technologies. Hisham Nazer, a leading Saudi Arabian intellectual and petroleum industry leader, argues that the West has used its control over these capabilities to superimpose its cultural and political values on the rest of the world. CNN, films and television, and the Internet have become the means of promoting Western products—including soft drinks, detergents, and even the ideals of democracy and human rights—in relatively powerless non-Western nations. This process of creating a global culture through the propagation of Western political and philosophical constructs as world brands poses grave dangers for the entire international community. As countries become aware of their exploitation, the possibilities for frustration and violence become increasingly real. Power of a Third Kindis directed toward Western and non-Western leaders alike. For the former, it provides a new perspective from outside the mirror of our Western culture, pointing out that current practices are actually endangering the security of our hemisphere. The author calls on Western leaders to work on a dialogue with other societies as an alternative to exporting to them a monologue designed for passive absorption. And for the latter, this book will inspire them to steer out of their current course in time to protect their histories and the integrity of their cultures. Through meaningful dialogue, well-meaning nations will find a way for the most beneficial aspects of Western culture—self-rule and basic human rights—to evolve within the context of local cultures, resulting in a world both more stable and more humane.

Perone, James E. Words and Music of Carole King. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216038375.

Full text
Abstract:
This long overdue examination of Carole King offers her legions of fans the chance to see how her work has developed over time, understand what her music means to other contemporary performers, and grasp its significance in American music at large. Name a Carole King song. Anyone who's been a fan of popular music over the past 45 years should be able to do it with ease. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?, Take Good Care Of My Baby, The Locomotion, One Fine Day, Up On The Roof, A Natural Woman, I Feel The Earth Move, Smackwater Jack, It's Too Late, So Far Away, You've Got A Friend. Few writers can claim such a formidable catalogue. Fewer still can with justice claim to have spoken for a generation. After collaborating with Paul Simon in high school and composing hits for The Shirelles; Aretha Franklin; The Monkees; Blood, Sweat & Tears; and other artists throughout the 1960s, Carole King launched herself into the spotlight with the 1971 albumTapestry. Tapestrysold over 22 million copies, and was one of the most important feminist statements of the day, not just because of the words or music, but because King maintained almost total control over her product. Carole King has continued composing and performing breakthrough work sinceTapestry, though over the past 15 years audiences are more likely to have heard her music in films such asOne True Thing,You've Got Mail, andA League of Their Own. In 1988, the National Academy of Songwriters presented King and her one-time husband and collaborator Gerry Goffin with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Goffin and King were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as non-performers in 1990. Carole King was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986. AlthoughTapestrystill stands as King's masterpiece, she recorded many other albums, includingFantasy, Colour of Your Dreams, City Streets, Pearls, Wrap Around Joy, Touch the Sky, Simple Things, Thoroughbred, Love Makes the World, Welcome Home, andReally Rosie. All of these are discussed in the course of this volume, as are songs covered and performed by other artists.
