Abstract:
After a 20-year investment in growing cancer prevention and control intervention research, implementation science activities at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) were initiated from a recognition that most scientific and health intervention research findings were not being translated into programs and policies benefitting their intended audiences. Initial efforts focused on enhancing the dissemination and diffusion of evidence-based programs and policies combined with small investments in supplementing intervention research grants with dissemination and diffusion awards to build intervention researcher experience with implementation science. The focus later shifted to a greater emphasis supporting the implementation science. Throughout its history, the NCI implementation science approach has involved strategic partnerships and multilevel perspectives, along with strong stakeholder engagement. NCI has been and continues to be an important leader in and funder of implementation science, and current and future efforts should build upon this important foundation and infrastructure.
