The starting point for this research was the gap in performance outcomes at GCSE between Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot girls and their peers from other ethnic groups. Its aim was to explore possible factors contributing to this underperformance, from three perspectives: that of the girls, their parents and teachers. Predicated on the desire to improve outcomes for this group, the study adopted a critical ethnographic design. Today every city and town in Turkey has at least one monument of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), the founding father of the Turkish Republic, located in one of its most important public spaces.
