Abstract:
Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States, and in terms of mortality is second only to ischemic heart disease worldwide. Medical management for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) was limited to supportive care until 1995, when the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) trial demonstrated improved outcomes with systemic thrombolysis for AIS. Since December 2014, four major articles have been published in support of endovascular intervention for AIS, making this a central focus of this chapter.
