Since the October Revolution of 1917, Russian education as a social institution has been transformed four times. At present Russia is again at the beginning of educational reforms. The article describes the reasons that led to changes in the educational system, characterizes the directions of educational development of different periods. The linkage of leading persons to the priority directions of development of the educational institute is revealed.
