Williams, Calista. "The National Library of Wales and national identity, c.1840-1916." Thesis, Open University, 2017. http://oro.open.ac.uk/50818/.

Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the National Library of Wales (NLW) from conception to realisation. It adds to the limited existing work on the library by positioning it within the political and cultural environment from which it emerged, posing new questions about its relationship with Welsh national identity. Although there is some work which looks at national identity in relation to national library projects, nothing of this type and depth has been done before, and not in relation to Wales. The first section investigates the early calls for a NLW and explores why the campaign made significant progress from the 1890s. The focus then shifts to an interrogation of the British government’s decision to locate the library in Aberystwyth, challenging the important role previously assigned to the campaign group’s application. Chapter three analyses the library building fund’s subscription drive and argues that the campaign was not the result of a mass movement, but orchestrated by a group of elites. It evaluates the decision made by the library campaign committee to evoke momentary patriotic sympathies among potential subscribers, rather than extolling the virtues of the library as a long-term educational resource. Chapter four is an analysis of the library’s buying policy and argues that an overrepresentation from key academic disciplines on the committees may have created a bias towards certain subjects. The final chapter compares this vision with how the library’s services were utilised by three user groups: reading room users, tutorial class attendees and Ruhleben camp internees. Reading room usage generally concurred with the founders’ overall vision for the library. In contrast, remote users attending tutorial classes were given the opportunity to curate their own reading which resulted in a more wide-ranging collection. The thesis concludes with an assessment of the library’s development and role as a key element of Welsh nation-building at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Campbell, Bruce Argyll. "The battle of the sites : a national museum for Wales." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/8240.

Abstract:
This study has examined the progress towards a national museum for Wales; the perception of museums in the civic and national context; and the changes in this perception under the influence of alternative cultural and political agendas. To understand the perception of museums in the contending towns, the history of the relevant societies and their museums and their place in the civic environment, has been examined. With a greater certainty of a grant for a national museum in the early years of the twentieth century, the place of the museum in the civic and national arena took on a new role. This change in the status of the museum has been studied in the context of a growing sense of Welsh nationalism along with the differing political activities in the contending towns. The decision concerning the location of the national museum lay with the central government in London. The activities of this political operation has been examined as has the reaction to the decision in Wales. The purpose of this historiography has been to evidence the use of these museums - in particular, the proposed national museum for Wales - as instruments by people and organisations in the achieving of their various aims. To those with civic ambition the possession of the national museum would he symbolic of the capital of the Principality. Possession of the national museum, therefore, would bring commensurate status and power. To the civic leaders of Cardiff, the museum was an instrument in their drive for civic hegemony.

Ward, Alexandra. "Archaeology, heritage and identity : the creation and development of a national museum in Wales." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2008. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54744/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines selected issues, events, episodes and timeframes in the early life of the National Museum of Wales in order to analyse influential and defining aspects in its complex past. It provides a critical perspective on the cultural processes surrounding the foundation and development of the Museum, as well as the array of identities, archaeologies and representations produced. A further aim is to identify and deconstruct the trajectories of research and thought within the Museum's Archaeological department during the early 20th century. The thesis seeks to demonstrate the complexities of the museum experience and to highlight the nuances and subtleties within the national context. It provides a contextual view of the initial movement to establish a national museum and antiquities collection, and subsequently focuses mainly on critical aspects in the development, research and interpretive practices of the Archaeological department. While some awareness exists across the archaeological and museum spectrum that figures such as Sir R.E. Mortimer Wheeler and Sir Cyril Fox spent part of their archaeological careers at the National Museum of Wales, there has to date been no focused, critical analysis of their active roles in shaping, and contributing to, archaeological practice within the Museum itself and within the wider contexts of Welsh and British archaeology. Closer examination of the curatorial and personnel structures in the Museum raises important questions regarding research agendas, the ways in which the material culture collections were augmented, interpreted and displayed, and conflicting political ideologies. Additionally, it draws attention to the dynamics of curatorial practice and representation in a national institutional context. Studying the period of time between the initial move to establish a national museum in the 1890s and the development of a national archaeological collection in the 1920s/30s, reveals the shifts and transformations in cultural politics, institutional practices and museological philosophies.

Roderick, Gareth Lloyd. "Kyffin Williams Online at the National Library of Wales : presenting and interpreting art in a digital context." Thesis, Aberystwyth University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2160/452fd56a-3e68-4088-9945-c7f1595b8a8c.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the research undertaken to develop a prototype digital resource to display a fine art collection at the National Library of Wales. The thesis first presents art historical investigations into the work of Kyffin Williams: the work of Kyffin Williams and his relationship with the National Library of Wales; the artist?s position within the canon of Welsh art history; and how ideas around space, place and landscape can contribute towards a fresh understanding of the artist?s work. This art historical inquiry is then used to develop a digital resource, called Kyffin Williams Online, to display the digitised Sir Kyffin Williams Bequest Collection of the National Library of Wales. The thesis addresses the incongruity of a large art collection being held in a library rather than museum or gallery and the restrictions of using reproductions of works of art. These restrictions are acknowledged and used to provide ways in which digitised works of art can be used for research for their own sake, rather than only as facsimiles or reproductions. This has been achieved by using the focus on space, place and landscape in the art historical investigation has been used to develop a geo-spatial presentation of content which is relevant to the art collections of the National Library. The thesis closes by using the resultant digital resource to show examples of how these methods can be used to further art historical investigation, and how the knowledge, expertise and methods used can be transferred to the National Library in its work with digitised collections.

Abstract:
Much of the corpus of medieval Welsh prophetic poetry, comprising as it does diverse and complicated strands of political, mystical, religious, and legendary material, has not previously been systematically studied, or even printed. The introductory chapter of this thesis makes a preliminary exploration of the historical context of the prophecies, the nature of their propagators and audiences, and also the influences prevalent on the authors, be these intellectual and literary influences, or sub-conscious and psychological influences which fall into the realm of anthropology. There follow editions of the Welsh prophetic poetry found in Oxford, Jesus College, MS cxi, and Aberystwyth, National Library of Wales, MS Peniarth 50. These two manuscripts, dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries respectively, provide a significant cross-section of the medieval Welsh prophetic poetry extant. Detailed textual analyses of the poems with text, translation, and notes, examine language and metre, investigate references to persons and places, and seek to identify conventional prophetic elements. From a historical point of view, the prophetic texts are compared with contemporary chronicles, as reflections of contemporary historical thinking. Some attention is also paid to the material's wider manuscript context, and its transmission. This sheds light on the prevailing cultural and intellectual climate as well as providing invaluable help in the interpretation of individual prophecies.

Sá, Cecilia Gomes de. "Setor cultural de Brasília : contradições no centro da cidade." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/101894.

Abstract:
This research deals with the origins and architectural projects of the Cultural Sector of Brasília and pursues to understand the antagonisms and similarities between the Pilot Plan conducted by Lucio Costa and the various proposals made by the architect Oscar Niemeyer and other architects to the site, many of them built and consolidated. The Esplanade of Ministries in Brasilia is the most representative site of the urbanism and architecture of the city and fifty-‐three years after the foundation of the capital, the Cultural Sector is the only part of the Esplanade that has not yet completely implemented. This situation associated with the legally protection of the urban site of Brasilia sanctioned in 1991 and the decree number 314/92 establishing exclusivity of architectural intervention to the two authors of Brasilia signs the concern among architects, citizens and government to conciliate the purposes of Costa and Niemeyer. Despite the positive reference of both architects about progressive urbanism model in the idealization of the urban plan of Brasília and even a consensus and maturation of concepts and critiques of modern urbanism, associated with a respectful attitude towards the architectural precedents, there are explicit contradictions between projects executed by Oscar Niemeyer and the pilot plan designed by Lucio Costa that leave until today many unfinished projects and controversial discussions about the sector. The understanding of this process development results in the critical analysis of architectural projects confronted to the Pilot Plan of Lucio Costa and its historical precedents, beyond the inventory organization of the Cultural Sector projects.

Abstract:
The Cabinet des médailles et antiques in the French National Library holds a particular place in the vast constellation of Parisian museums. Home to the so-called « bijoux savants » that founded western collecting culture since the Renaissance, it is at once a universal coin cabinet, one of the worlds foremost collections of cut stones and gems, but also a miscellaneous collection of antiquities representing all periods and places. As described in 1930 by one of its curators, it represents a « parangon of amateur cabinets from another time ». This thesis does not directly deal with its prestigious origins but tells one chapter of its long history, looking at how, from the period of the Restoration onwards (beginning with the direction of Désiré Raoul-Rochette in 1819) until the passing of Ernest Babelon in 1924, this cabinet of antiquarian culture and collections adapted and developed to the modern Republican museum age. The life of the department is first considered as a means of understanding the role of material culture and the place of the museum inside France’s national library in the nineteenth century. It then goes on to consider the development of the collections themselves and their scientific and museological exploitation in light of the rapidly expanding practice of archaeology and highly specialised auxiliary sciences of history

Former National Library of Peiping is the first modern library of China and one of the important opera libraries at that time. The great collection of National Library of Peiping stood as a model for domestic public libraries at that time to collect Chinese drama rare books and brought important new development to libraries in China. Most researches took these drama collection of National Library of Peiping merely as literature reference for Chinese drama history or drama literary theory studies instead of an object for bibliography study. This study will focus on the 141 Chuanqi drama rare books, elaborating and investigating their sources, texts, values and editions. This thesis will include six chapters. Chapter 1 will be an introduction for the study motive, preceding researches, research methodology and target. Chapter 2 will be a brief history of National Library of Peiping. The history will include the library’s establishment, the collection and cataloguing of rare books, how the rare books were transported from Shanghai, Library of Congress (U.S.) to Taiwan, and how they were rearranged and preserved in Taiwan, to provide a clear picture for every stage for the collection. Chapter 3 will discuss the transformation of the idea of collection throughout the whole process, from the library history, rare book collecting records and the rare book cataloguing. The conceptual evolution of collection was resulted from the NEW Cultural Movement and many librarians who received new-fashioned education recruited in National Library of Peiping at that time. Thus, the Library began to take the drama rare books seriously and many rare books were collected. It can also be inferred from the collection seals and handwritten inscriptions on these rare books that collectors at that time includes Zhu Xi-Zu, Dong Kang, Xu Nai-Chang, and Li Ci-Ming. Chapter 4 will reexamine the Chuanqi drama rare books from the perspective of bibliography and conclude that the current collection in National Palace Museum (Taipei) is not the complete collection of National Library of Peiping at that time, as Chang Bi-De indicates. For example, almost all Block-printed edition of JiZhiZhai were not allowed to be transported. The chapter will also elaborate the evaluations and criticisms of Wang Zhong-Min and Zhang Di-Hua on these Chuanqi drama rare books. Chapter 5 will analyze and compile statistics on the editions of the 141 Chuanqi drama rare books in National Palace Museum. By periods, Ming dramas are mainly block-print editions while Ching dramas include handwritten copies and block-print editions. By editions, handwritten copies tend to be exquisite transcripts. They also include some single existing copies and manuscripts. Block-print editions mainly comes from the publishers in Nanjing at that time. They are usually printed in red and black, including woodblock print Illustration and Commentary Punctuation. The publishers at that time usually add “illustration,” “reprint,” “phonetic notes added,” “reedition,” “footnote,” “commentary” in addition to the titles for better promotion. Chapter 6 will be the conclusion, indicating the research achievements, solved and unsolved problem for follow-up researchers. Hopefully, the study will help to provide a clear picture for the history, source, text, value, and editions for the Chuanqi drama rare book collections of Former National Library of Peiping.

Abstract:
The libraries of Lichnowsky noble family are currently composed of the sections. The first one is the main family line library stored in Hradec nad Moravicí castle and the latter is the one originally from Chuchelná castle. This thesis focuses on 16-18th century prints as parts of the above mentioned libraries. The aim here is the content and provenance analysis of the library fund of Lichnowsky within the suggested periods of time. At the front, the attention is on signature lines and on the question, whether the Chuchelná library contains books that once belonged to private property of Lichnowsky family. In the following chapters, it is explained why the scale of the analysis is limited to the selected centuries. The answer also reflects the general topic of understanding castle libraries. The focus is also on the history of the noble family of Lichnowsky. After localization of the library itself, major parts of the thesis follow, which chapters comprising the content and provenance analysis of the libraries. The provenance chapter has two parts. Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation entailed a qualitative case study on the confluence of technology and social studies in fostering a constructivist education. Through the examination of pre-service social studies teachers’ understanding of the online primary source resources (OPSR), three themes emerged. The first exposed the fragmented understanding of important pedagogical theories of constructivism and historical thinking among participants; the second suggested that OPSR was mostly valued by pre-service teachers for its provision of primary sources; and the third related to how pre-service teachers viewed the current state of technology and context as problematic for technology integration. Accordingly, four findings were revealed. First, the pre-service teachers in the study demonstrated a limited understanding of the application of foundational theories central to their field of study; second, there were instances of deeper appreciation of the potential of OPSR, indicating that pre-service teachers’ theoretical understanding is ix nascent and may deepen overtime; third, the full potential of technologies such as OPSR was not recognized; and fourth, the pre-service teachers’ perceptions of school and educational system conditions tended to negatively influence their views toward the integration of technology into their teaching practices. Implications indicate that first, foundational pedagogical theories are critical with regard to technology integration in education and as such teacher preparation programs must not assume what is taught is what is learned; second, instances of deeper understanding among pre-service teachers only appeared during the application of their theoretical understandings; third, context is critical in how OPSR would be used in classrooms and such contextual issues must not be ignored by teacher preparation programs; and fourth, teachers’ technological pedagogical content knowledge (PCK/TPCK) is critical in the integration of technology in education.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a historical biography of F.V. Engelenburg (1863-1938) and covers the period from 1889 to 1938, when Engelenburg lived and worked in South Africa. The study situates Engelenburg in the historical landscape of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The focus is mainly on Engelenburg’s journalistic career at De Volksstem, but attention is also given to his many other interests, including the development and promotion of Afrikaans and the Afrikaans academic culture, especially in the northern parts of South Africa. His work pertaining to the development of architecture, literature, aviation, the visual and performing arts, history, libraries, museums and educational institutions comes under the spotlight. His private life is considered as well in order to portray his versatility as a person. The chapters have been subdivided to highlight the variety of matters he was involved in, and a chronological approach has been followed as is customary in a biography. The study is based on archival research. In particular, Engelenburg’s private collections were used, as well as the private collections of some of his contemporaries. Engelenburg assumes a central place in the biography, with special focus on how he perceived and experienced conditions and everyday life in South Africa from the point of view of his transnational European background. His role as influential opinion-maker and political commentator on local and international politics is highlighted. His ties with political leaders and his involvement in government affairs are emphasised. The study also refers to his continued contact with his motherland, the Netherlands, and with the Dutch language. After the Anglo- Boer War, he realised that the languages of the future in South Africa would be Afrikaans (not Dutch), alongside English. His continuing support for Afrikaans as a language of instruction in schools and universities and the development of the Afrikaans literature, as well as his support for the standardization of Afrikaans helped to establish Afrikaans as an official language alongside English and Dutch in South Africa. Engelenburg’s active contribution to the work of the Zuid-Afrikaanse Akademie voor Taal, Lettere en Kuns (now the Suid- Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns), helped to put the organization on a sound footing for future development. The Akademie can be seen as a living monument to his work in South Africa.
