The 2015 award went to Mr. Cohen. </span></p><p><span>***</span></p><p><span>Freehold, New Jersey faced two major moments of deindustrialization in the post-World War II period. In the late 1950s, the rug mill that sat at the center of the town’s economic and cultural life began to close down. In 1986, a 3M audio-visual tape plant that had helped the town avoid economic ruin shut down as well. This paper illustrates the continuities between these closings, challenging the dogma in labor history that plant closings occur because of management’s desire to avoid an entitled and demanding workforce. Though workers at both plants were unionized, neither the rug mill nor the 3M workers made major demands on their employers in the postwar period. This paper analyzes the conditions that prompted shutdowns in Freehold, illustrating the role of broader market forces as well as internal company dynamics in driving capital flight. Furthermore, a close look at the 3M closing reveals the importance of culture in workers’ responses to deindustrialization. Following 3M’s announcement of its plans to shut down the Freehold plant, workers began a national media campaign to save their jobs. At the heart of this campaign was the memory of the rug mill that had closed 25 years earlier, as represented by their campaign anthem, Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 song “My Hometown.” This paper demonstrates the role of memory and music in shaping workers’ experience with deindustrialization as well as the struggles of unions to codify the relationship between capital and community in the twentieth century.</span></p>

This article explores Seabrook Farms as a relevant case study in how local New Jersey histories can be connected to national and international narratives about displacement, resettlement, and government-sponsored labor migrations. It examines how students can participate in the creation of new scholarship and exhibits, and illustrates that there is still much to learn about the history of our state. In order to maximize its production of frozen foods, Seabrook Farms relied on federal policies and initiatives that allowed the company to recruit and hire Japanese American internees, German POWs, guestworkers from the British West Indies, black and white farm labor from the U.S. South, and Estonian and other Eastern European refugees from Displaced Persons’ camps in postwar Germany. As this article argues, scholars concerned with the relevance of history, and the public humanities more generally, have an obligation to approach New Jersey’s past with a critical and outward-looking perspective, so as to uncover the full economic, political, and social importance of local sites and stories.

On 20 September 2001 the founder and CEO of a New Jersey-based face-recognition technology company called Visionics testified before a special government committee appointed by the secretary of transportation. Joseph Atick's message to the committee was simple: his company's face recognition equipment could dramatically improve security in US airports and embassies. The science of biometrics, a method of identifying people by scanning unique physical characteristics like facial structures and retinal patterns, could, claimed Atick, be deployed as part of a comprehensive national surveillance plan that he called Operation Noble Shield. According to this plan the Office of Homeland Security might take the lead and liaise with local police forces to install cameras linked to a web-based biometric network throughout American cities. In order to protect America from further terrorist acts, Atick claimed, “We need to create an invisible fence, an invisible shield.” Members of the committee liked his ideas and seemed ready to endorse his recommendations.

Purpose This study aims to explore how a New Jersey-based, national vision insurance company and a Pennsylvania pharmacy benefits manager have incorporated mindfulness into the workplace. National Vision Administrators (NVA) and BeneCard PBF offer mindfulness to all employees, which has markedly improved productivity and morale, created empathy and stronger teamwork. The practice of mindfulness has been known to enhance results, decision-making skills and empower individuals to thrive under pressure both inside and out of the workplace. Design/methodology/approach To evaluate the benefit of a daily or weekly mindfulness practice, NVA tapped Free Form Minds, a training consultancy specializing in mindfulness, to conduct a series of group trainings and one-on-one sessions. To ensure optimal success and results, Fee Form Minds customized its programs for the companies and individuals they worked with. Findings The findings show team members have reported feeling more energized, with increased levels of concentration and decreased tendency of procrastination. Practicing employees found themselves regularly surpassing their goals while also allowing them to be more present with their families and less stressed at home. Originality/value The practice of mindfulness can help employees reduce stress and be more effective and focused. When utilizing this tool, ongoing, they are more likely to capitalize on their strengths and better handle stress. Incorporating the practice of mindfulness into NVA and BeneCard PBF has created a greater sense of community among employees leading to a more cohesive and happier work environment. Mindfulness has allowed individuals to be more focused, less impacted by stressors and improve both their professional and personal lives.

Managing a business such as a garment must have clear organizational structure, financial management, and production implementation so that company goals can be achieved according to the targets set by a company. The purpose of this research is to describe the business studies in "Vandev" Garments, especially in the production implementation section, which includes the manufacturing process of 3 products, namely jackets, jersey products, and shirt products. In this study, researchers used a descriptive research design with a qualitative approach. Checking the validity of the findings using source triangulation and triangulation techniques Based on the results of the researcher's findings that, all implementation of the production section is in accordance with the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards starting from the process of preparing product samples, the pattern making process, the process of spreading cloth, the process of cutting cloth, the process of numbering the materials, grouping the materials that have been given number, screen printing / embroidery, sewing process, finishing, cleaning clothes from thread remnants (trimming), packaging ironing process. The production implementation process is carried out in each worker's home, so that quality control is carried out every 2 days. Even though production is carried out in each worker's house, it does not change the quality of the product. When the trimming process uses the manual method instead of using a metal detector machine, you must be more careful in checking the product. The product marketing process is not only from within the country but has reached abroad. Suggestions for Garments "Vandev" regarding production management as input to further improve the skills of production employees. The last suggestion is for other researchers that this research can be an input and a reference for similar research but with a more detailed and more detailed discussion of the garment business study, so that it can add new insights for other researchers. Mengelola suatu usaha seperti garmen harus jelas struktur organisasinya, pengelolaan keuangan, serta pelaksanaan produksinya agar tujuan perusahaan bisa tercapai sesuai target yang ditentukan suatu perusahaan tersebut. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan studi usaha yang ada di Garmen “Vandev” terutama pada bagian pelaksanaan produksi meliputi proses pembuatan 3 produk yaitu jaket, produk jersey, dan produk kemeja. Pada penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan rancangan penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Pengumpulan data yang diperoleh peneliti mulai dari proses wawancara 2 karyawan dan 1 pemilik garmen, observasi saat proses produksi berlangsung, serta dokumentasi saat proses produksi. Pengecekan keabsahan temuan menggunakan triangulasi sumber dan triangulasi teknik. Berdasarkan hasil temuan penelti bahwa, semua pelaksanaan bagian produksi telah sesuai dengan Standar Kompetensi Kerja Nasional Indonesia mulai dari proses menyiapkan contoh produk (sample), proses pembuatan pola, proses mengelar kain, proses memotong kain, proses penomeran pada bahan, pengelompokkan bahan yang sudah diberi nomer, sablon/bordir, proses menjahit, finishing, membersihkan pakaian dari sisa-sisa benang (trimming), proses penyetrikaan pengemasan. Proses pelaksanan produksi dilakukan di rumah masing-masing pekerja, sehingga quality control dilakukan setiap 2 hari sekali. Meskipun produksi dilakukan di masing-masing rumah pekerja tidak merubah kualitas produk tersebut. Saat proses trimming menggunakan cara manual bukan menggunakan mesin metal detector sehingga harus lebih teliti dalam memeriksa produknya. Proses pemasaran produk bukan hanya dari dalam negeri melainkan sudah sampai ke luar negeri. Saran bagi Garmen “Vandev” mengenai pengelolaan produksi sebagai masukan untuk lebih meningkatkan keterampilan para karyawan bagian produksi. Saran yang terakhir yaitu bagi peneliti lain bahwa penelitian ini bisa menjadi masukan serta menjadi referensi untuk penelitian sejenisnya namun dengan pembahasan yang lebih diperinci dan lebih detail mengenai studi usaha garmen, sehingga dapat menambah wawasan baru bagi peneliti lainnya.

ABSTRACT Over the past nine years, the U.S. Coast Guard has incorporated the Prevention Through People (PTP) philosophy as a “human factors” approach to learn how maritime operations can be regulated safer and be more efficient by evaluating training, management policies, operational procedures, and establishing partnerships with the maritime industry. One of the key elements of applying a PTP approach is identifying and incorporating lessons learned from major marine casualties and pollution incidents. Since 1997, the U.S. Coast Guard National Strike Force (NSF) has responded to three major oil spills involving foreign freight vessels grounding, which included the removal of highly viscous oil using various lightering equipment and systems. An informal workgroup consisting of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage (NAVSUPSALV), and various representatives from oil pollution clean-up companies met at the following facilities: the Chevron Asphalt Facility in Edmonds, WA (September 1999), the Oil and Hazardous Materials Simulated Environmental Test Tank (OHMSETT) testing facility in Leonardo, New Jersey (November 1999 and March 2000), the Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) warehouse annex in Prudhoe Bay, AK (October 2000), and Cenac Towing Company facility in Houma, LA (May 2002). The group shared ideas and techniques, and tested different pumps and hose lengths with viscous oil. It was during the early tests that the first quantitative results showed just how efficient lubricated transport of heavy oil product could be, and broadened the knowledge of such methods to the entire industry. Although this technology had existed for many years in the oil production and handling industry, its use had never been investigated in a laboratory setting with regard to salvage response lightering systems. The lubrication of heavy oil product was first applied in the tests in the form of Annular Water Injection (AWI) by means of an, Annular Water Injection Flange (AWIF). This idea had been developed many years ago by the oil industry to improve oil output production, but was first applied to salvage response using the flange concept by the Frank Mohn Company of Norway. In concept, the flange applies water to the viscous product discharge of a pump by means of its unique geometry. The initial tests resulted in developing the use of AWI on the discharge side of the pump. This technique was further refined and applied to existing U.S. Coast Guard lightering systems in the form of the Viscous Oil Pumping System (VOPS) package, which has been issued to each of the three USCG Strike Teams of the National Strike Force (NSF). Latest improvements include using AWI on the suction side of the pump with hot water or steam. For this suction application, a different device used to deliver water lubrication was also tested concurrently with the discharge AWIF. Other significant improvements, which achieved one of the goals set in 2000, was to seek global partnership with other companies or agencies from other countries. In 2002, the Canadian Coast Guard formally joined the U.S. VOPS workgroup to form the Joint Viscous Oil Pumping System (JVOPS) Workgroup.
