Abstract:
Subject Olympiads as a form of development of student intellectual potential within the framework of traditional school education in the era of the scientific progress of society is more relevant than ever. Studying of the previous experience in the development of the school Olympiad movement provides material for understanding the principles of its further development. The purpose of the article is to analyze the materials of dissertational research by national authors, which reflect the problem of the development of the school Olympiad movement of the XX–XXI centuries. The author made an attempt to systematize the dissertation materials on the substantive aspects of the consideration of the problem of the school Olympiad movement. The analysis of dissertation materials made it possible to identify the main directions of studying the problem of school subject Olympiads in the dissertations of national authors (including the problem of selecting gifted students and their support within the framework of school education: consideration of the content and direct organization of school subject Olympiads; methodological support of the school Olympiad movement). The obtained results allow the author to divide dissertation research of the selected period into three groups, which were differentiated by the identified trends in studying the problem of school Olympiad movement development at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries (using the example of the disciplines of the natural science cycle).

Abstract:
In this article, we propose the use of Olympic didactic situations (SDO), such as those used in the National Science Olympiad (ONC), Brazilian Science Olympiad (OBC), among others, as an alternative for teaching kinematics, in the component of Physics, in Basic Education. Reflecting on the need to work with kinematics in a more attractive and challenging way, which arouses the interest of students. Questions from Brazilian Olympics tests were analyzed and those about kinematics were selected. They were resolved, trying to meet the most didactic way to be carried out with the students. We observed that there is a scarcity of works that report the use of SDO in Physics teaching. However, we believe that it is possible to associate Olympic problems with teaching the Physics component and especially kinematics. Thus, we propose the use of this pedagogical approach to make learning more attractive for students, given that these competitions are gaining more and more strength in the educational field, offering great opportunities for students who stand out.

Abstract:
The National Science Olympiad (OSN) is one of the prestigious Olympic competitions in Indonesia. However, certain educational institutions experience many obstacles in preparation, especially in mathematics. Some of these obstacles include the fact that many academic institutions still do not facilitate teachers to focus on teaching mathematics Olympiad material. This condition requires teachers to be extra in preparing material and practice questions for mathematics olympiads. The "MathSyik" application is equipped with material presented in videos, practice questions, and quizzes that are enhanced with features for awarding points and speed of time. This research uses RD methods and 4D models. After going through the development stage, the "MathSyik" learning media was then tested for validity by two material experts and two media experts. Based on the validity test, a score of 95.5% was obtained by media experts and a score of 80.63% by material experts, both of which were declared very valid and valid. Because it is declared very valid, the learning media "MathSyik" can be used as preparation material for mathematics olympiads on congruence material.

Abstract:
The Olympiad movement of schoolchildren is a ubiquitous driver of the search for talented young people and an international pedagogical phenomenon. The study of national experience in the implementation and preparation for school subject olympiads in China is the goal of our study, the relevance of which is determined by both the mass participation of Russian schoolchildren in intellectual competitions and the dominant role of Chinese teams in international olympiads in natural science disciplines. The approaches used in the study, on whose principles we relied: systemic, activity, cultural. Among the theoretical methods we apply are the study of domestic and English-language scientific literature on the topic, generalization of ideas, categorization. At the empirical level, we have studied the regulatory documents of the Chinese government in the field of education in English, which are publicly available for international scientific cooperation. Many sources were found in the Chinese database of research papers cnki.net. As a result of the study, the following features of the Olympiad movement in China were revealed: strict selection of applicants for national teams in various subjects, a multi-level dropout system for schoolchildren, the presence of training camps for the backbone of teams, from which participants in international competitions are determined (usually 6 people). Government support is implemented through the activities of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology. Despite the success of Olympiads, in recent years, the mass participation in China has decreased, since the Ministry of Education has banned directly accepting the winners of Olympiads to universities without specialized selection. In the Chinese tradition, successful contestants are perceived as “supernormal” teenagers with outstanding abilities, whose number a priori cannot be large. China’s success in economic and technological paths speaks of the effectiveness of educational technologies, which forces domestic teachers to analyze the eastern path of development of giftedness in school.

Abstract:
The article deals with the first steps of the school Olympiad movement that was emerging in the Soviet Union. The purpose of the article is to study the establishment of subject Olympiads in the disciplines of the natural science cycle in the national school in the 20th century. The author presents a view of the history of the first subject Olympiads in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology, which showed that many of them began as Moscow city subject Olympiads. A goal-setting paradigm for such Olympiads was revealed (from attracting attention and developing interest in certain subjects of the natural science cycle to increasing the level of knowledge in these disciplines). The article describes the features of their conduct, the requirements for the content of the Olympiad tasks, which at the first stages reflected the theoretical bias of the tasks of intellectual competitions, but gradually included more and more tasks of an applied nature in all disciplines. The author traces the development of subject Olympiads of the natural science cycle from the stage when just dozens of schoolchildren participated in them to the period when thousands of students of general education schools were involved in this movement.

Abstract:
The development of student's interests and skills is strategically important to foster their career choice in the field of science, technology and engineering, which is one of the goals of Latvia's National Development Plan for 2021-2027. Physics Olympiads can be used as one of the enrichment measures to supplement formal school teaching in raising student motivation and developing their skills and talents. We explore directions in which the existing system of Physics Olympiads can be improved, with the goals of reaching a wider audience of teachers and students and achieving further integration with the learning processes in schools. We have conducted a survey of physics teachers (NT=188), and participants (NP=486) of the second (county) stage of Latvian Physics Olympiad in January 2020. The aim of the survey was to find out: 1) What motivates students to participate and teachers to encourage participation in Physics Olympiads? 2) What resources are used for training? 3) What further support would students and teachers need for training for the Olympics? Based on the results of the survey, we propose specific measures to support teachers and students in their engagement with Physics Olympiads, report on the implementation progress, and give an outlook for the future.

The International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) is a relatively new international science olympiad, having begun in 2007. Be-sides the usual written and practical tests, co-operative activities like the International Field Team Investigation (ITFI) and Earth System Project (ESP) are special and exclusive to IESO. Two problems that are unique to Earth Science education are the lack of visibility and the quality of teaching of Earth Science. In recent years, the International Geoscience Education Organisation has brought in sweeping changes in the way IESO testing is done. This paper summarises how IESO has contributed to enhanc-ing the profile and visibility and the quality of earth science education: Through national level entrance test and National Earth Science Olympiad; through publicity regarding the entrance test and related Olympiad activities; through workshops during and between IESO’s; through Mentors and Observers; through the International Team Field Investigation (ITFI) and Earth System Project (ESP); and through hosting IESO. However, efforts have to be made to further increase the impact of IESO on the quali-ty of Earth Science education by several means, including having more countries to participate in IESO.

This article outlines the evolution of sports broadcasting on Canadian television, focusing on the broadcast of the Olympic Games. I argue that history of the Olympics on national television exemplifies the evolution of the idea of public service television in Canada. Specifically, it reflects the delicate balance between the nation’s public and private broadcasters, whose relationship extends far beyond mere competition. The public service raison d’être and mission have nonetheless been called into question throughout the development of television. Incidentally, the values of the Olympic movement were also called into question in this period, during which the Games evolved from an all-amateur Olympiad to a fully commercial spectacle designed for (and by) television.

Partners of the Community Partnership Program (PKM) are the SD Teachers Working Group (KKG) Cluster I Region. Problems faced by partner groups: 1). The mastery of the teachers / KKG members on the material and discussion of math and science Olympiad questions is still low. 2) The elementary school teachers in the cluster I areas were generally D2 and S1 PGSD alumni, where at the time they were studying only basic mathematics and science material, which had a low level of abstraction. This causes teachers / KKG members in the region to often misunderstand the basic concepts of mathematics and science. 3). In addition, references that can be used as enrichment materials are also lacking, and 4). Available sources to ask questions about the mathematics and science Olympiad material are also lacking, because the South Banawa sub-district is located in the border area of the provinces of Central Sulawesi and West Sulawesi. The goal of PKM is to improve the ability of elementary school teachers to solve math and science Olympiad questions, so that later they can guide students who will take part in the district, provincial and national level Olympiad. The expected output target in PKM activities is that at least 5 KKG members in the cluster I region can work on the 2019 city level Olympic questions, so that they can guide their students to qualify for the provincial level selection. After this activity is completed, the participants are expected to be able to pass on their knowledge to other fellow teachers. The book is the result of discussion of Olympic questions at the city and provincial levels, the work of the regional KKG members to be used as one of the future references. To achieve this target, the method used in this PKM activity is to provide training on material and discussion of mathematics and science Olympiad questions, basic concepts of mathematics and science which are important and support for following mathematics and science materials which require higher analysis. Provide assistance to ensure the material presented to partners can be implemented properly so that the results obtained can reach the target.

The Department of Library and information resources of the East Siberian state Institute of culture (VSGIK), since 2011, holds an annual Republican olympiad among high school students in information culture. Over the entire period, more than ten thousand three hundred high school students from various municipal educational institutions in Ulan-Ude and the Republic of Buryatia took part in the Olympiad. According to the “regulations on the national contest in information culture”, the winners at the threshold of unified state examination on the subjects “Literature”, “Russian language”, “Social Studies” guaranteed credited in FGBOU VO VSGIK on a budgetary place in the direction of training 51.03.06 “Library information activities” bachelor profile “Information-analytical activity”. The main results of previous years' Olympiads in terms of content criteria are revealed. Starting in 2016, the Olympiads were held in conjunction with the Buryat Republican Institute of educational policy, which allowed more schools in Buryatia to participate. One of the last Olympiads for the first time was included in the number of National Olympiads in the subjects of the ethno-cultural component. It included 3 stages: school, municipal and Republican. For a more accurate assessment of different types of questions, six assessment scales were developed that take into account the correctness of the answers to the proposed questions and a detailed algorithm for its implementation. The analysis of high school students ' responses to blocks of Olympiad tasks is presented, typical errors that occurred among participants are considered, and problems of preparation for the Republican Olympiad are identified. The characteristics of the answers allow us to state that the majority of students - participants of the Olympiad: 1. they do not have the skill to formulate a query or define keywords when working in Internet search engines; 2. they do not know how to analyze the results of search engines and choose the correct reliable source from the found ones; 3. they are not able to analyze the content of a particular site, to search for information in its sections; 4. not trained to work in electronic catalogs, do not know their search capabilities; 5. they have an insufficient level of use of reference literature, use wikipedia as the main source, replacing it with Internet versions of classic reference publications; 6. they demonstrate a lack of skills in analytical and synthetic processing of information, do not know how to make annotations, plan an abstract on a given topic; 7. they do not know how to make lists of literature on given topics, do not understand what sources to choose for this purpose, how to form them and design them. Analyzing the results of the Olympiad and the level of readiness of participants to work with Internet resources, you can make the following recommendations. To better prepare students in general education institutions, a joint program on information culture of students should be developed. The working committee should include school librarians (teachers-librarians) and teachers of computer science, Russian language and literature, etc., as well as include the subject “Information culture” in the curricula of secondary educational institutions.

Abstract:
Making science enjoyable inspires students to learn more. Out-of-class activities such as science fairs and Olympiads, serve as reasonable informal learning environments that demand attention. The association of students’ involvement in these activities with increased student interest in science followed by the selection of science-related careers, should motivate all in-charge stakeholders. In this work, we analysed the outcomes of the Bosnia Science Olympiad (BSO) as the first national Science Olympiad in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), aiming the improvement of science education and bringing different ethnic groups under the umbrella of science, in a post-conflict area. The two-day endeavour held in Sarajevo includes competition in four science-related categories (Environment, Engineering, Have an Idea, Web Design) and social activities. In this work, the comprehensive data, including participants’ gender, their ethnic background, cities, schools, and supervisors, over five years, was analysed. The number of participating high-school students increased from 78 to 143, of supervisors from 21 to 95, and of schools from 7 to 15, reaching a wide demographic acceptance to cover all ethnic regions in BiH. The relationship between gender and the selection of a category, shows bias of male participants towards Web Design (21%) and Engineering (40%), and of female students towards “Have an Idea” (40%) and Environment (44%) categories. The contribution of BSO choosing a science career, getting socialized without prejudices, and the improvement of students’ self-confidence, were as well addressed. Our work demonstrates a model work to successfully promote science in post-conflict settings.

This research investigates gender disparities in Indonesia's National Science Olympiad (OSN) Achievements. This research uses mix research, quantitative and qualitative. Data for quantitative analysis we get from secondary data, national achievement center website. Qualitative data we get from questionnaire with free response question, and distributed to students, teachers, and special teachers. For quantitative research we use Mann-Whitney U test whereas qualitative research we use content analysis. This research found that males are dominance to females in almost all subjects of National Science Olympiad Achievements significantly. Social stereotypes about boys using more logic and reasoning while females use more emotion, influence female self-perception and performance in understanding math and science. In terms of biology, it also shows that there are concerns of female participants when participating in OSN, they are in the menstrual period. They felt that when they were menstruating, not only did they feel abdominal pain, they also felt unstable emotions. This reduces the performance of female students when participating in the OSN Competition. The stereotype of females taking care of more household tasks or problems, causing less support from parents to female children than that given to male children. The lack of freedom gained by the female students reduces their study time for OSN preparation

The preference of information sources in preparation for the National Science Olympiad among high school students in the city of Surabaya, has the aim of explaining and knowing how the preferences or selection of information sources among high school students are to prepare themselves to confront OSN. The number of sources of information widespread among high school students will lead to a choice of information sources that can later be used as references by students to meet academic needs and for the needs of the National Science Olympiad (OSN). The ability of students to access and obtain information sources effectively can be a provision that must be mastered by students in selecting information sources. That way, students will get sources of information according to their needs in preparing for OSN. This research uses descriptive quantitative research methods and purposive sampling. The data collection method was taken from questionnaires and secondary data. This study analyzes the selection of printed and non-printed sources of information and the factors behind respondents choosing information sources. The results obtained from this research are that students tend to have multiple preferences, it can be proven by as many as 49% of respondents choosing to use both sources of information (printed and non-printed), this shows different results from previous research and uses as the theory of this research proposed by Jhon Steppen B. Arenas, et al. .al. (2018) The factors behind the choice of information sources available by students are due to the availability of collections in locations where students make choices, and also the convenience provided when selecting information sources, both printed and non-printed sources of information to prepare for the National Science Olympiad ( OSN). The selection of information sources is also inseparable from the important role of the library, as a location to find sources of information that can support OSN preparation.

Abstract:
The National Science Olympiad (NSO) presents significant challenges for most junior high school students. This qualitative study examines the cognitive processes of gold medal-winning students by analyzing their anticipation strategies in solving geometry problems. Employing a descriptive-exploratory approach, we conducted problem-solving tests (using modified NSO geometry questions) and semi-structured interviews with a gold medalist from SMPN 2 Jember. Our findings reveal three distinct anticipation patterns: (1) positive internalized anticipation - intuitive conceptual application yielding correct solutions (e.g., establishing geometric relationships without procedural calculations in Problem 1), (2) negative internalized anticipation - rapid but erroneous assumptions (evident in angle miscalculations in Problem 2), and (3) analytical anticipation - systematic verification through logical reasoning (demonstrated in ∠POR ratio reevaluation). These results provide empirical evidence of how anticipation strategies influence olympiad performance. The study suggests practical interventions including: (1) diagnostic tools for anticipation profiling, (2) teacher training programs to cultivate positive anticipation patterns, and (3) curricular integration of analytical anticipation as metacognitive strategy. For olympiad preparation, we recommend scaffolded problem-solving tasks with structured reflection to transform negative anticipation patterns. Future research should investigate the domain-specificity of these anticipation processes across mathematical disciplines.

Abstract:
Since fall 2015, the University of Virginia’s (UVA) Engineering Student Council (ESC) has partnered with the nonprofit Virginia Science Olympiad (VASO) organization to host a Science Olympiad (SciOly) state tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia, each spring. This annual tournament brings over 2,000 middle and high school students, teachers, and parents to the UVA campus, and teams of 15–17 people from roughly 90 schools across Virginia participate in 46 different events (23 middle school, Division B; 23 high school, Division C) relating to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields throughout the day-long competition. The national SciOly organization sets the events and rules to comply with national education standards, and the VASO board coordinates the teams and tournaments within the state. By collaborating with VASO, UVA ESC was able to plan a large-scale SciOly tournament at UVA in approximately 10 mo with the support of the UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science. Since this event was planned and executed solely by undergraduates in cooperation with the nonprofit organization, there were institutional hurdles that were overcome through the months of planning. The Virginia SciOly state tournament has continued to be held at UVA with the support and cooperation of the UVA ESC and VASO, and bringing this tournament to UVA has allowed for increased excitement for participating K–12 students and a mitigated burden to the VASO organizers in planning the state competition. This paper aims to provide a resource for other universities to support STEM activities in K–12 outreach organizations, like SciOly, in the future.

Abstract:
This activity was carried out with the background of wanting to implement relevant science to help problems in society. The world of education from elementary school to college is required to adapt to the rapid development of science, especially in the field of information technology. The purpose of this activity is in line with the holding of the Balikpapan City National Science Olympiad competition in the field of informatics, namely the material is basic programming language. So our Community Service Team will provide intensive training to students selected by the school to take part in the Balikpapan City OSN. The methods we use in the community service activities carried out by the team consist of building communication with partners, designing basic programming language learning modules, and providing training in the use of Dev C++ software in the form of training in installation and application in basic programming language coding and its implementation in everyday life in accordance with the National Science Olympiad curriculum. In implementing this Community Service, the PkM activity implementation team provides basic programming training, using a repetitive delivery method. This is because SMAIT AL Auliya students have never received material related to programming languages before at the high school level. Learning programming languages is something new for these students. So the implementation team must use the right learning strategy to deliver the material by creating presentation slides, teaching modules, practice questions and their discussions. So that the results of this activity get satisfactory results.

This research aims to describe the level of mathematical reasoning ability of students in solving mathematical Olympiad problems based on problem-solving of the Polya model. This study employed descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. Data were collected by using observation, documentation, and interviews. The study subjects were 27 junior high school students participating in the National Science Competition in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the Miles and Huberman analysis model was used as the data analysis. The results of this study indicated that: (1) the level of students’ mathematical reasoning-ability based on the problem-solving of Polya models in the category of "sufficiently competent" (high-group students), in the category of "less competent" (medium-group students), and in the category of "incompetent" (low-group students); (2) the most complex and rarely performed stages by students in Polya’s model were at the "devising a plan" and "looking back" stages; and (3) the Polya's model used in solving mathematical Olympiad test items was more suitable for those considered as routine-questions, and it was not suitable for non-routine questions. This study also showed that, on average, the students had difficulty finding initial ideas to start working on the test items.

Abstract:
This study measures and analyzes the performances of the participating nations at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). A country’s success at the IMO is evaluated by the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals won. To measure and compare the performances of the countries, the data envelopment analysis approach is employed and all countries that have won at least one medal have been included in our dataset. As measures for the inputs, two macro-level determinants that can support the effort made by a country are considered: population size and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Our findings indicate a mean level of technical efficiency for the nations analyzed. The results suggest that, on average, the inefficient countries in the sample could achieve improved results by increasing the number of outputs produced while maintaining the same level of effort spent.

Abstract:
Training in increasing the competence of MGMP Chemistry teachers in 50 City Regencies in preparing students for the National Science Olympiad (OSN). The activity began with filling out a questionnaire for the readiness of the teachers in the learning process and pre-test to see the initial abilities of the MGMP Chemistry teachers in the City 50 District. After training in strengthening chemical materials and discussing HOTS questions in the fields of Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Biochemistry, a post test was conducted to evaluate the achievement of the objectives of the activity. From the questionnaire given at the beginning of the activity it can be concluded that in general the teachers were ready for learning even though they were not used to the HOTS questions of the Olympic type questions. This is directly proportional to the pre-test results with an average value of 3.625 (scale 10). After the training of the teachers there was a significant increase which was shown by the results of the post test with an average of 5.5 (scale 10). As an evaluation material, at the end of the activity the satisfaction questionnaire was distributed and the results obtained were an average of a questionnaire of 3.47 (scale 4). Generally teachers complain about the lack of training time so that the absorption of the material provided is quite low.

Abstract:
Technological developments that help in the teaching and learning process in the classroom, when selecting OSN participants, each school sends representatives, the same as SDN Jatimekar IV which also sends student representatives from the school. However, there are often difficulties in determining school representatives. So a decision support system (SPK) is needed to determine which students are appointed by school representatives. The research uses the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) algorithm because it has a model that can see the relationship between criteria data and alternative data which helps in determining which students are worthy of representing the school. Therefore, it is hoped that it will help the school to simplify the selection process for students who will be proposed as school representatives. The research results help the selection process for participants in the National Science Olympiad (OSN) at SDN Jatimekar IV.
