In 1924, the Soviet government carried out a very important measure — national delimitation. Its essence is the determination of dominant ethnic groups, territorial delimitation between them, state building, and development of the economy and national culture. The result of this delimitation was the creation of five Soviet Republics and the Karakalpak Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Regardless of its overall effect, the delimitation created the prerequisites for interstate and internal conflicts related to territorial claims, the regime of enclaves, and protection of minorities’ rights.

In the context of the complex ethno-cultural mosaic of Central Asia, it is highly relevant to examine the historical and political prerequisites of the national-territorial delimitation that took place in the region during the 20th century. The purpose of this article is to analyze this complex process during the early years of Soviet power when the foundations of state institutions and the administrative-territorial structure of the USSR were being established. In this regard, the article focuses on revealing this process through the example of the formation of the Karakalpak Autonomous Regio

Decades of international debates have been insufficient to build consensus over a universal, multilateral delimitation of outer space. A legal frontier, still undelimited, exists between the territorial air space (under national control and jurisdiction) and outer space (where no claim of sovereignty is authorized). As technology advances, blurring the differences between aeronautics and astronautics, this question gains renewed relevance for practical purposes. The long-term sustainability (LTS) of outer space depends upon recognizing outer space as a specific and unique domain, distinguished

The conclusion uses a variety of archival materials to document the fraught diplomatic negotiations that took place between the Italian and Egyptian governments from the end of World War I until 1925–26, when a border delimitation agreement was finally signed. At the same time, however, the chapter illustrates the limitations of this agreement—how it actually left much unsettled in the borderland in terms of national citizenship and belonging. The book ends with a meditation on how the mechanisms of territorial nation-statehood still seem elusive in this region, which again wrestles with the m

Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-Descendant Peoples (IP, LC & ADP) — roughly 2.5 billion people — customarily manage over 50% of the global land mass, but governments currently recognize their legal ownership to just 10% (RRI, 2015).
