Abstract:
In today's fast-changing business environment, digital transformation has become an essential strategic imperative for companies seeking to maintain a competitive edge. However, research on the effect of national culture on digital transformation is lacking. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the effect of national culture on digital transformation, with a focus on the mediating role of digital competencies and information system management practices, as well as the moderating effect of leadership. 250 managers and employees with digital transformation experience across various industries in Saudi Arabia were surveyed. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze and test the research hypotheses. The findings demonstrate that national culture significantly affects digital transformation, with digital competencies and information system management practices acting as mediators. Furthermore, the study discovered that leadership plays a moderating role in the relationship between national culture and digital transformation. The positive impact of national culture on digital transformation is amplified when there is a transformational leadership style in place. These insights hold significant implications for organizations embarking on digital transformation initiatives, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture encourages digital innovation and risk-taking, investing in digital capabilities and effective information system management, and nurturing transformational leadership to drive successful digital transformation efforts.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with literary negotiations of nation and citizenship at key moments of U.S. national transformation.· It examines specifically. the ways that literature represents transformations in civic relationships, constructing and contesting the connection between citizen, or noncitizen, and state. In the wake of Revolutionary claims to guarantee a reciprocal relationship between citizen and state, Charles Brockden Brown's gothic novel Wieland (1798) represents the early republic's structures of authority as tyrannous. Tropes of 'spousal· murder, ventriloq'uism and seduction critique disenfranchised women's metaphoric death to the state, and engage the dangers of representative government. Lydia Maria Child's Hobomok (1828) and George Lippard's 'Bel of Prairie Eden (1848) problematise antebellum Manifest De.stiny by revealing the racialised contact that colonisation entailed. Child protests against Indian Removal by figuring the U.S. as an interracial family, in which Native Americans are integral. Lippard compares the U.S.Mexican War's violence to that of Spanish imperialism, undermining exceptionalism and representing contact as inherently corrupting. In the contexts of threatened and recently concluded Civil War respectively, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) and Thomas Wentworth Higginson's Army . Life in a Black Regiment (1869) negotiate the transformation of enslaved men into free citizens through armed resistance. Their representations of masculine, black heroism are inflected by assumptions about race and, in Stowe's case, by invocations of Spain and the U.S.-Mexican War. Pauline E. Hopkins's magazine novel Of One Blood (1902-03) responds to U.S. imperialism in Hawaii, Cuba and the Philippines. It uses transnational and pan-African perspectives to critique the nation's failed reconstruction after the Civil War as the cause of its interconnected, racialised domination of African Americans at home, and colonised peoples abroad. In all of these texts, tropes of reciprocal transformation contest attempts to represent the U.S. as homogeneous, eternal and exceptional. They operate in three overlapping relationships: those between foreign and domestic concerns, between the state and the individual, and between the U.S. and other nations or empires.

Matthes, Britta Katharina. "From national to pluri-national : rethinking the transformation of the Bolivian state through struggles for autonomy." Thesis, University of Bath, 2018. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.760972.

Full text
Abstract:
Following a series of profound conflicts in the early 21st century, Bolivia became the world’s first pluri-national state in 2009. The idea of the pluri-national state goes beyond the (uni-)national state; imagining a state that allows peoples’ coexistence on an equal footing in a state that facilitates their autonomy (Garcés, 2011). However, recent research indicates that, in practice, the Bolivian state transformation is full of tensions. Based on a framework that brings together Open Marxism (Holloway and Picciotto, 1977; Clarke, 1991c; Bonefeld et al., 1992b, a; Bonefeld et al., 1995b) and the 'de-colonial option' (Quijano, 2006), I offer in-depth insights into contemporary Bolivia. In this, I understand the state as the political form of the social relations of capital, which is marked by modernity and its 'darker side' - coloniality (Mignolo, 2011). This thesis offers tools for studying how the state 'translates' indigenous- and non-indigenous struggles into policies, law and polity (Dinerstein, 2015) while also mediating external pressures. After embedding the pluri-national state in its historical context, covering the emergence and development of the Bolivian state form, I look in depth at the pluri-national state. In this, I unpack the multifaceted struggles for autonomy and find that when mediating autonomy into the pluri-national state, something essential to the definition of plurinationality is lost in translation. First, struggles for autonomy as peoples’ self-determination and deepened decentralisation became subordinated to, yet not annihilated by the government’s social-communitarian model that is advocated in the name of the pueblo’s self-determination and ensures the state’s material basis. Secondly, state-recognised autonomy comes at the cost of submission to a state which continuously operates pre-dominantly according to modern/colonial ideas of law, order and organisation. The contradictions found in the pluri-national autonomy regime and the state are inherent in it and hence, cannot be resolved through reform.

Ndlovu, Mandipa Bongiwe. "‘The Political Economy of Non-Recurrence: Navigating National Healing, Institutional Reform & Militarisation in Zimbabwe'." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32950.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis contextualises the state of transitional justice, elite outlooks and militarisation in Zimbabwe, whilst drawing attention to the complexities of achieving this reality. The study draws from transitional justice, civil-military relations, as well as the political settlements literature as analytical frameworks. Essentially, the study poses two key questions: How does studying transitional justice and elite culture help pre-plan for strategies to professionalise the military and reallocate civic-political duties to citizens should Zimbabwe transition out of authoritarianism? Once achieved, how can this be sustained towards socio-economic development? The study also tackles questions of justice and impunity whilst framing client-patron relations amongst the elite as impediments to progress. Amidst cyclical episodes of violation, the thesis links the denial of justice through amnesties, corruption, and further violence, to the politics of policing memory and trauma. This is analysed within the scope of the late Robert Mugabe regime as well as the current Emmerson Mnangagwa regime – both of which are inherited legacies from the Ian Smith regime. The intricacies of elite networks and accumulation are then laid out, culminating in deliberations on how to navigate prospects for reform, in understanding the politics of non-recurrence when contextualising systemic as well as physical violence. The thesis aims to contribute to ongoing discussions on political leadership, national healing, and institutional reform in Zimbabwe.

Hautefeuille, Saya. "The Transformation of National Identity in Germany: The Role of Political Parties." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37818.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how national identities change and evolve through time. In that sense, it joins other studies that have studied the mechanisms for changes in national identities. While some authors have tended to focus on state structure, institutional changes (i.e. the creation of federal institutions that encourage regional identities) or belief systems, this study argues that political parties play an important role on national identity formulation. Essentially, this study will establish the argument that political parties have an impact on the direction of national identity. Using HI it will illustrate that the institutional framework in which political parties operate affects the direction that they will push national identity towards. Indeed, political actors have a vision for national identity and they will articulate and redefine how national identity is conceptualized but not freely. Rather, how institutions guide actors, preferences and ideas is central to understanding why national identity takes the form and direction that it does. Using the case study of Germany (1949-1969), it will demonstrate that the CDU sought to define German national identity as one based on Christian weltanschauung, integration with the west (westbindung) and social market economy (sozialen Marktwirtschaft) and that with each notion the influence of the Basic Law and previous political institutions could be felt as emphasis would be put on how each concept was related to “freedom”, “individual rights” and “democracy”.

Abstract:
This case study underscores the significance of digitalization in healthcare, exemplified by Korea's successful integration of electronic health record (EHR) systems, which has markedly enhanced clinical services quality and efficiency. Focusing on the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), a leading national multispecialty academic medical center in Korea, the case study details the hospital's journey towards digitalization through the implementation of its interoperable EHR system, BESTCare. Through focus group interviews with field-deployed staff, the study reveals the critical factors for successful digital transformation in hospital management, including leadership investment decisions and the engagement of end-users from the outset. The gradual yet significant benefits of digital transformation, such as cost efficiency and clinical quality improvements, are highlighted, along with the adaptability of digital tools in crisis situations like the COVID-19 pandemic. The study concludes with the documented impacts of BESTCare and other digital tools on care quality and efficiency, suggesting that similar digital transformation efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean could lead to significant health outcomes improvements while maintaining current healthcare spending levels.

Abstract:
There is a broad consensus that agri-food systems need to be transformed to address the mounting global challenges including food and nutrition security, environmental degradation, and socioeconomic inequities. However, agreement is lacking on what is needed to drive this transformation. This report builds on a sustainability analysis of different proposed pathways and approaches to address transformative needs. It also serves as a study of the drivers and agents that support the implementation of these proposed pathways in different cases around the globe. We recommend the adoption of a multi-level governance framework to coordinate the transformation of agri-food systems, guaranteeing the attainment of transformation goals across all levels. This includes global agreements and international goals at the international level, national transformation pathways at the country level, and the operational level embedded in local governance. This report introduces the Agri-food Systems Transformation Protocol as a decision-support protocol at the desired operational level serving different actors within agri-food systems. The Agri-food Systems Transformation Protocol proposes a four-stage and nine-step iterative process that can guide the development of transformation pathways in different contexts and at different levels of implementation. It was conceived during a workshop of the Expert Advisory Group of the Assessment and Communication of Climate Impacts of Food (CLIF) project in June 2023. The aim was to develop a step-by-step guide to transforming food systems that is not prescriptive and follows a rights-based, place-based, systems approach. The protocol was informed by background research on different case studies from the agri-food sector and advances the three principles of preserving the rights of people, ecosystem integrity, and integrity of the process. The background study identified the main drivers and agents of transformation by analysing 14 case studies from five continents, a selection that was finalized at the expert workshop. A transformation matrix that maps the agents and drivers with different steps of transformation process is also presented to aid the implementation of the protocol. This protocol is intended to be the first step in developing a transformative theory of change for agri-food systems, with the methodologies for each step being the subject of further development.
