Abstract:
This study examined issues that necessitated the use of federal universities academics and national youth service corps members in the conduct of general elections in Nigeria and discussed the credibility of election management with their involvement. It also interrogated the effectiveness and challenges of using them by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The study utilised primary data that was collected through semi-structured interviews with thirty respondents. Secondary data was sourced from periodicals, journals, election manuals, and electoral act of 2010 as amended. The data collected were analysed using content analysis. The study showed that the need to sanitize the electoral system informed the use of universities academics and national youth service corps members. The study also showed that the academics and national youth service corps members have facilitated the credibility of the electoral system and that the activities of desperate politicians who are driven by the lust for political power are some of the challenges faced in using university academics and national youth service corps members. It is suggested that the current use of universities academics and national youth service corps members in the conduct of future elections should be sustained. Abstract:
As part of the measures to deal with the rate of youth unemployment in Nigeria, entrepreneurship programmes were incorporated into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, which was initially meant to promote common national awareness among graduate youths. While this experiment created a problem due to the NYSC posting policy, the empowerment programmes face other challenges that constrain their outcome. The posting policy privileged the allocation of graduate youths to work establishments where many of them are either under-utilised or incompetent. The NYSC empowerment programmes, on the other hand, grappled with the problems of corruption by job empowerment agencies, the negative attitude of corps members towards vocational and technical skill acquisition and inadequate resources to assist corps members who want to put their business plans into practice. The present paper concludes that the NYSC posting policy and empowerment programmes offer corps members little chance for the acquisition of relevant skills needed for self-development and is unable to properly address the problem of unemployment in Nigeria.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study appraised the impact of the involvement of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in community development in three selected Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Oyo State, Nigeria. It also compared the corps members’ assessment of the impact of the NYSC community development services to that of the community members; and evaluated the level of involvement of the community in the planning and implementation of community development services of the NYSC. Methodology: This study was a cross-sectional survey and utilised both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather its primary data. The selected study area included Ogbomosho North, Ido and Akinyele Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Oyo State, Nigeria. A total of community members, 15 community leaders, and 150 serving NYSC corps members were interviewed through questionnaires and key informant interviewData analysis was done using IBM/SPSS software, version 25.0. Findings: Data obtained showed that 74.8% of the community members agreed that the development of their respective LGAs have been enhanced by the activities of the various NYSC Community Development Service (CDS) groups; 80% agreed that they could give clear instances where NYSC have contributed to community development in their various LGAs. The most impactful community development activity of the NYSC was Education (79.7%), whilst Environment [Clean water and sanitation] (73.4%) and Healthcare (68.5%) were the second and third, respectively. There was a very weak negative correlation between the community development service preference of the community members and that of the NYSC corps members (r = -.074, p>.05). In terms of community participation, 60.8% of the community members agreed that the NYSC involves the community in the planning of their community development activities, and 61.6% agreed that the NYSC involves the community in the implementation. The discovered challenges confronting the operation of the NYSC CDS as a tool for community development are inadequate finance; corps members’ prioritisation of infrastructure projects over service-based projects; and corps members lack of motivation or enthusiasm in CDS activities. Recommendations: The NYSC through its CDS activities has positive impacts in the development of the communities in Oyo state, Nigeria. The NYSC community development services should therefore be sustained nationwide by the Nigerian government.

Abstract:
The National Youth Service Corps was established under Decree 24 of 1973 to foster national unity. It was one of the post-civil war strategies of reconciling the warring groups and building a united Nigeria. At its inception, the programme was generally well received, however as time progressed, some destabilizing factors began to dim the hope of its continuity. This study therefore aims at investigating to what extent the National Youth Service Corps programme will remain a viable instrument of national integration in the coming years. Using the quantitative research orientation, 400 copies of a questionnaire were administered among current participants, former participants, prospective participants as well as non-participants across four (4) Local Government Areas in Lagos and Ogun States. A total of 345 completed questionnaires were returned, giving a rate of return of 86.25%. The analysis of the data was essentially by descriptive statistical methods including, frequency tables and simple percentile. The result suggests that the National Youth Service Corp programme is currently being threatened by the twin challenges of insecurity and youth unemployment. 49.4% of respondents opined that they influenced their postings due to security issues, while 29.3% influenced theirs based on job placement. 63.7% confirmed that there will no need of influencing their postings if the challenges of security and unemployment were resolved. The study therefore recommends that government at all levels do the needful to mitigate these challenges, if the dream of a united Nigeria will be realized.

Abstract:
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was established in 1973 after the Nigerian civil war to involve Nigerian university graduates below the age of thirty in nation building. Gradually, the scheme was opened-up for polytechnic graduates. The article presents the objectives and deployment policy of the programme. It shows that the early phase of the programme recorded the problems of corruption, ghost corps members, accommodation, language barriers as well as hostile culture. However, the contemporary Nigerian society has been overtaken by the destructive wind of insecurity. The article reveals that the various waves of political violence in the country, including Boko Haram terrorism, hostage crises, and geographical threats have turned into a collection of overwhelming menace to the programme, thereby leading to massive agitation for itabrogation. The article recommends for multiple series of reforms in order to protect the lives of many Nigerian graduates that are building the nation through this admirable development programme.

Abstract:
At the National Consultative Forum on Transforming the Administration of Justice System in Nigeria, convened by the Federal Minister of Justice and the Federal Attorney-General in November 2001, it was decided to draft a National Action Plan on Justice Sector Reform in Nigeria and to produce a Justice Vision document. The Ministry of Justice and the Attorney-General's office identified the need to examine ways of (a) upholding the Constitution and the rule of law; (b) promoting justice, fairness and human dignity; and (c) incorporating and expanding community participation in the administration of justice. The Legal Aid Council of Nigeria could contribute to this process by establishing a public defender network using law graduates in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). It may be possible to use the NYSC scheme to expand dramatically the current level of legal aid in Nigeria by employing the services of NYSC law graduates more extensively as public defenders. In order to consider the feasibility of such a programme the following factors will be considered: (i) the availability of lawyers and law graduates; (ii) the duties imposed by the Nigerian Constitution; (iii) the function of the Legal Aid Council; (iv) the operation of the Legal Aid Council; (v) the provision of legal aid services by the Legal Aid Council; and (vi) the cost of establishing a structured NYSC public defender programme.

Abstract:
The principal means of accessing admission into higher educational institutions in Nigeria is the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) carried out by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The total number of candidates looking for admission into the different Nigerian institutions of higher learning has been on the increase over the years. The main motivation behind setting up any Open Distance Learning (ODL) institutions in Nigeria is to give a scope of chance to admittance to advanced education to students who, for one explanation or the other, really like to have their schooling in a more adaptable way. Moreover, the low admission limit of Nigerian universities for full time studies places a limit on the number of prospective learners who can be admitted into universities thereby making a monstrous hole between the people who want higher education and the framework accessible to cater for their necessities. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme is an obligatory programme set up by the Nigerian government to include graduates of Nigerian educational tertiary institutions who are 30 years and below with the aim of promoting national unity and integration as well as to contribute to the accelerated growth of the national economy. However, graduates of open and distance learning institutions in the country do not take part in the NYSC programme. An attempt is made in this paper to investigate the level of preparedness and interests of ODL students and their disappointment in their exclusion from the programme. To achieve this, a descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study with a random sample of 201 respondents comprising 114 male and 87 female distant learners within the stipulated age for the NYSC scheme. A researcher-developed questionnaire was used to gather data from respondents. Four research questions were raised and three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data gathered were analyzed and presented using figures, simple percentages, frequency tables and the Independent T-test. The findings revealed that 98% of respondents believe that they are prepared for the NYSC scheme, while 2% of respondents are not prepared. 99% are interested and 97% are disappointed at their exclusion from the scheme. No significant gender difference was observed in the level of preparedness, extent of interest and degree of disappointment in exclusion from the scheme among respondents. The study recommends a collaborative effort of ODL institutions and their counselling units in addressing anxieties and disappointments among students. The study also advocates a review of government’s policy on the NYSC scheme for possible inclusion of young graduates of ODL institutions in the scheme.

Abstract:
Background: The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was designed to foster shared bonds among Nigerian youths and promote national unity. The orientation course is one of the program’s key initiatives. Even though camping promotes socialization and self-confidence, campers may be exposed to a variety of diseases and injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the pattern of diseases seen in the NYSC orientation camps. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in NYSC orientation camps in Delta, Abia, and Katsina States. The demographic information and diagnoses were extracted from the camp clinics' registers. The data was analysed with SPSS, and the level of significance was set at p<0.05.Results: A total of 2231 cases were seen. There were 299 cases (13.4%) seen in Delta state camp, 1076 (48.2%) from Abia, and 856 (38.4%) from Katsina state. There were more males (51.7%) than females (48.3%). The mean age was 25.10±2.67 years. The most common diagnoses were upper respiratory tract infection (23.4%), malaria (22.5%), acid-peptic disorders (12.1%), gastroenteritis (6.9%), musculoskeletal disorders (4.7%), and allergic diseases (4.7%). Fatigue/myalgia, headache disorders, and malingering accounted for 4.3%, 3.8%, and 1% of cases, respectively. Bronchial asthma and sexually transmitted infections were significantly more common in females than males (p<0.001).Conclusions: This study indicated that orientation camps are home to a variety of diseases, with upper respiratory tract infections and malaria being the most prevalent. This information is essential for resource allocation, planning, and policy formulation.

Abstract:
The research analyzes the practical teaching challenges faced by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members working as ad hoc teachers in secondary schools in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. The survey method was used in this study. The population consists of all 86 Batch B (Stream 1 and Stream 2) corps members assigned to Ekpoma, Edo State's public secondary schools in 2022. A questionnaire created by the researcher served as the tool for gathering data. The instrument's Split-Half Reliability coefficient for classroom, environmental, and instructional-based issues was 0.75, 0.78, and 0.82, respectively. The instrument was given to aspiring instructors by the researcher and two trained research assistants. Utilizing percentages (%), means (X), and standard deviations (SD), research issues 1, 2, and 3 were examined (S.D). The findings indicated that the difficulties faced by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) volunteers working as substitute teachers in secondary schools in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria bordered on classroom management. These difficulties included handling students' poor seating arrangements, managing students' movement into and out of the classroom, preventing disruptive behavior in the classroom, and upholding punctuality rules. The challenges in adjusting to school are a result of the corps members' failure to follow school regulations, the normal school instructors' lack of cooperation with the corps members, and the corps members' lack of participation in extracurricular activities. Some of the instructional-based difficulties experienced by the institution's trainee instructors were student teachers' inability to appropriately use instructional resources and their anxiousness during lesson presentations in the classroom. The during the orientation exercise of corps members in the NYSC camp, it was recommended that special pre-service orientation should be given to corps members; for the purpose of pre-informing corps members on the possible challenges they are likely to face at their various school of primary assignment.

Abstract:
The rampaging food insecurity around the globe and particularly in Nigeria despite the availability of suitable land mass for agriculture and the teeming youthful population raised concern for the study. The possibility of exploring the opportunity provided by the National Youth Service Corps in reorientating Nigeria graduates in agropreneurship using a self-developed manual necessitated the study. The study employed pretest posttest design. Convenient sampling technique was employed in sampling 73 corps members who were serving in Ile Ife and its environs. Agropreneurship Interest Scale (AIS) a self-developed 20-item likert-type questionnaire was used for data gathering. The content validity ratio (α = 1) and reliability coefficient (r = 0.89) respectively were obtained for the instrument. Analysis of data showed that participants had low interest in agropreneurship (18.33%) before the commencement of the training. Also, that the training has significant impact on the agropreneurship interest of the participants (mean learning gain of the participant = 67.89%). The study concluded that Nigeria youths particularly the Corpers can be effectively motivated in agropreneurship using appropriate manual and strategies.

Abstract:
The focus of this study was aimed at investigating effects of entrepreneurial skills acquisition on self-employment, as to redress the ills of unemployment in Nigeria. The study which was designed as a descriptive survey evaluated the mediating effects of psycho- social factors on the relationship between entrepreneurial skills acquisition and self-employment in Nigeria. Instrument for data collection was close ended questionnaire, which was designed with five options: strongly agree, agree, undecided, strongly disagree and disagree; in line with the five (5) points modified Likert scale. The instrument was tested for validity and reliability and found suitable for the study. The population of the study was Twenty-Two Thousand, Eight Hundred and Seventy Six (22,876), serving National Youth Corps members in South- East, Nigeria. Using Borg and Gall (1973) technique, sample size of Four Thousand, Four Hundred and Twelve (4412) was deduced, though the study was conducted using 4,400 copies of questionnaire that were received fully completed and usable. Data generated from the study were analyzed using descriptive statistics: tables, frequencies, percentages, graphs, pie charts and histograms. Five distinct hypotheses were formulated to guide the study, and were tested using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression inferential statistics, with the help of e-view, version 9. All tests were carried out at significance level of 0.05 and 10% degree of freedom (df). The study revealed that entrepreneurial skills variables: business skills, technical skills and personal entrepreneurial skills have significant positive effects on self-employment in Nigeria. The study also established that psycho- social factors (self- motivation and social influence) have significant positive effect on self-employment in Nigeria. The research concluded that with adequate effort in motivating the students and enhanced positive social influence, entrepreneurial skills acquisition will encourage nascent entrepreneurship activities and stimulate existing entrepreneurs to high performance. Hence the study recommended, among others that tertiary institutions and other entrepreneurial training centres should enrich their curriculum with business skills, technical skills, personal entrepreneurial skills, and also planned activities that will motivate students and provide positive social influence, to ensure that entrepreneurial skills acquisition generates enterprise creation and reduce the problem of unemployment in Nigeria.

Abstract:
Background: The National Youth Service Corps programme is, among other targets, aimed at promoting national inclusiveness and tolerance in a culturally heterogeneous society. Despite the importance of this programme, little has been done to evaluate its degree of success. Where evaluations are done, they are never made public. There is a need for the NYSC programme, just like all other public programmes, to be evaluated for transparency, accountability and decision-making. From an evaluation of the three measurable objectives of the NYSC programme, this dataset bridges this gap. Methods: This dataset was collected from Nigerian graduates that completed their national service between 2012 and 2021. The data was collected through an electronic survey posted to various online platforms hosting National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members of the various sets and batches. The data collection aimed to evaluate the three cardinal objectives of the programme. After three years of data collection (from 2019 to 2021), responses were obtained from 19,278 participants that met the eligibility criteria. The data is an Excel (.xlsx) document with 19,278 cases and 95 variables. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and simple percentages were used to summarise the data. However, charts are further used to illustrate the demographic attributes of the respondents. The dataset is broad and covers all the 36 states in Nigeria plus the Federal Capital Territory. Results: The data set has many reuse potentials because it contains information on camp activities (such as parades, military drills, redeployment, quality of food, and facilities, among others), primary assignments and community service engagements of corps members. Conclusions: The data can offer a complete evaluation of how the (NYSC) has attained three of its four cardinal objectives. A series of relationships can further be determined and tested using inferential statistics among the variables included in the dataset.

Abstract:
Nigeria has been described by many scholars particularly, the demographers, sociologists and social studies educators as a country with more than three hundred and fifty (350) ethnic nationalities with diverse cultural, linguistic, religious orientations. This multiplicity or heterogeneous character of the Nigerian state tends to frustrate the various attempts at integrating these various entities that constitute the country. However, successive Nigerian regimes have strived to integrate their citizens through such schemes as National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), encouragement of inter-tribal marriages, institutionalization of lingua-franca, emplacement of Federal Character Commission, among others. Notwithstanding these giant strides, integration of various people of Nigeria has proven difficult and perhaps continues to remain a herculean task for the government. This paper, therefore, x-rays the probable nexus between political science education and national integration in Nigeria. It adopted a content-analysis as contained in the national dailies, textbooks, special reports and journal articles to review the extant but relevant literature and consequently, maintains that acquiring adequate knowledge of political science; a sub-field within the umbrella term of social sciences, can be used as a potent yet, veritable tool for national integration in Nigeria. It nevertheless recommends the need to make the subject matter of political science education a compulsion for all students of Nigerian schools, colleges, universities, among other recommendations.

Abstract:
Objectives: This study was done to determine the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and assess the associated factors among new members of national youth service corps (NYSC) programme in North-Western Nigeria.Method: A clinic-based descriptive cross-sectional study with convenient sampling method using selfadministered questionnaires was done among 157, 2018 Batch-C, corps members at Dakingari orientation camp in Kebbi State, over a period of three weeks. The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was determined using anxiety subset of Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Data were analyzed with SPSS-16 andChi-square was used to assess the degree of association between anxiety symptoms and certain factors. Pvalue of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 50.0% among the respondents. There was a significant association between the presence of anxiety symptoms and age of the respondents (P-value= 0.006).Conclusion: The high prevalence of anxiety symptoms among the new NYSC members suggests the need to take preventive measures such as incorporation of subjects on what should be expected during service year into the undergraduate learning curriculum. Doctors attending to youth corps members, especially when on camp, should routinely screen them for anxiety symptoms.

Abstract:
Background: Maternal and neonatal mortality statistics in Nigeria are poor, and the burden of deaths from preventable causes is on the increase. Preconception care has been documented to reduce maternal mortality. This study was undertaken to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice of preconception care among female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Lagos State.Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 370 female corps members without a history of pregnancy. A multistage sampling technique was used to select the participants. A semi-structured, self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection, and data was analyzed with Epi-Info 7 software. The Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were used to determine the association between socio-demographic characteristics and the outcome variables with level of significance set at p<0.05.Results: Out of 370 respondents with mean age 21 years ± 8.5), 48.9% had fair knowledge of preconception care, 30.5% and 20.5%had poor and good knowledge respectively. The majority of aware respondents (92.5%) exhibited a positive attitude to preconception care. Good practice was reported among 47.3%, fair practice 35.1% and poor practice by 17.6% of the respondents. A statistically significant association was found between education level (p = 0.047), course of study (p < 0.001) and knowledge. Education level (p= 0.037) and course of study (p = 0.026) were significantly associated with practice. Conclusion: Preconception care knowledge was fair among study population; attitude was positive while practice was good. Preconception care health education should be implemented to create awareness among female corps members.

Abstract:
Background: Suicidality is a broad term that encompasses suicidal ideation, suicide plans and suicide attempts. Suicide cuts across all age groups however the young adulthood phase is a critical time for the onset of suicidal behaviours. Often suicide is underreported because of the shame, as such it is a neglected public health problem in our environment. This study seeks to describe the pattern of suicidality and reported health seeking behaviour amongst young people in Bayelsa State. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in the national youth service corps orientation camp, Bayelsa amongst 387 corps members. With the aid of an electronic, self-administered questionnaire adapted from the WHO STEPwise manual on non-communicable diseases; information on socio demographic features, suicide ideation, plan and attempt were obtained. Data was analysed using IBM SPSS version 25.0.Results: The mean age was 25.37 (SD±2.38) years. Most participants were males (58.9%) and single (95.3%). Prevalence of suicidal ideation, plans and attempts was 7.5%, 4.4% and 3.1% respectively. Above one third (35.4%) of those who made suicidal plans in the past 12 months, actually attempted suicide, 4.4% and 2.6% of the respondents had a positive family history of suicide attempt and suicide death respectively. Conclusions: Young adults are a critical population for suicidality. Public health awareness on mental health promotion and uptake of mental health service should be encouraged. Decriminalisation of attempted suicide in Nigeria and better surveillance will enable more effective suicide prevention strategies.

Abstract:
Purpose: Many methodological and empirical perspectives on the broker between entrepreneurship education and business start-up performance have been prescribed and implemented. However, limited empirical evidence exists on applying cognitive characteristics as a mediator. Hence, this study focused on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Lagos State. Design/methodology/approach: The cross-sectional survey research design was used, and data were obtained from 406 graduate entrepreneurs at the National Youth Service Camp (NYSC) before registering with SAED-BOI (Bank of Industry), Lagos State 2021 NYSC 21A, and Stream 1 Batch. The total enumeration technique was applied after the sample filtration criteria were established. Findings: Hierarchical regression analysis results using an SPSS add-on called process analysis found cognitive characteristics significantly mediated the relationship between entrepreneurship education and business start-up performance in Lagos State Nigeria. Research, Practical & Social implications: The broker (cognitive prowess), is required if entrepreneurship education and business start-up performance must survive, expand, and flourish in different sectors. Originality/value: The findings is paramount to the trade industry (start-up ecosystem) and education sector as it would serve as a reliable source of information on the necessary and effective entrepreneurship education mix required to boost business start-up performance.

Abstract:
The study examines the mediating effects of self-efficacy (SE) and the need for achievement (NFA) on the relationship between locus of control (LC) and entrepreneurial intention (EI) among Nigerian graduates. A survey technique was used to select young graduates from Nigerian Tertiary Institutions that are on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Oyo State, Nigeria. A total of 300 copies of the structured questionnaire were administered to the respondents in the Ibadan metropolis but only 252 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved for the analysis. Data analysis was performed with the aid of Path Analysis. The results reveal that LC has a positive and significant association with SE, NFA and EI. Evidence also indicates that SE partially mediates between LC and EI. It was also found that the NFA partially mediates between LC and EI. For this reason, experiential learning should be integrated into short and long terms entrepreneurship training. This allows students to further develop their self-efficacy as entrepreneurs and motivation to perform by successfully entering the world of business. This will go a long way in reducing the dire unemployment rate in the country and promote imaginative and positive 2030 aspirations for sustainable development.

Abstract:
This study investigated the effect of self-efficacy on self-employment intentions of recent graduates. Using the descriptive survey research design, the study population includes National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members of Ojo Local Government area of Lagos state. A sample of 130 was selected using the purposive sampling technique. The formulated hypotheses were tested using the simple linear regression and the independent sample t-test. The results showed that there was a statistically significant influence of self-efficacy on self-employment intention of Corps members of Ojo local government, Lagos state. A significant regression coefficient was found F (1.128)=29.72, p<.05), with R2 of .19. This presupposes that19.0% of the variance in self-employment intentions is as a result of the self-efficacy of recent graduates. Also, a statistically significant difference in the self-employment intentions were found between male and female corps members (tcal(128) = 2.11 is greater than ttab=1.98, p < .05). The study therefore recommended, amongst others, that institutions and the government should educate and devise a means by which they can increase the level of graduates and students’ self-efficacy which in turn will help shape their intention towards shaping career options after graduation. Similarly, effective entrepreneurship education and training for students and graduates to enhance their efficacy in performing specific tasks and roles of an entrepreneur will go a long way in boosting their self-employment intention and also aids them towards post graduate job creation ability rather than job seekers

Abstract:
The intention to set up social ventures remains an unpopular choice for intending entrepreneurs due to its obvious limitations of resource constraints. Yet it remains a vital means of making social goods available to disadvantaged people, especially in developing countries. Our study aims to investigate how prior experience and networking ability interacts with empathy, moral obligation, self-efficacy, and social support to induce social entrepreneurial intentions in budding entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Using simultaneous linear regression, we analyzed data from a collection of 315 respondents enrolled in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)—a one-year mandatory national service scheme for graduates of higher institutions who are on the verge of making critical career choices. Our findings show that the main effects were statistically significant, while networking ability, more than prior experience, moderated the main effects. Conclusively, budding entrepreneurs need to hone their networking skills in order to exploit their social networks and complement the benefits of prior experiences as they contemplate social entrepreneurship. Future investigations can focus on determining how other environmental factors such as government/institutional support, technological adoption, and infrastructure would affect social entrepreneurial intentions.

Abstract:
The numbers of persons graduating from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are on the increase and exacerbating the unemployment problem in Nigeria, while employment generation has not kept pace with the signals from the labour market. Presently about 300,0000 graduates annually from HEIs and are mobilised into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The labour market consequently tilts in excess to the supply side than to the demand side. In view of the saturation in the job seekers in search of paid employment, self-paid employment or entrepreneurship remains a very table tool to engage the HEIs graduates. This will ensure national development The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had last June declared that about 29 million Nigerians are unemployed. In view of the level of unemployment among graduates and the ‘employability’ of the graduates, scratching the surface of our educational malaise is not acceptable. The expectation is that the relevant views and propositions on practical solutions on how to revamp the education systems to potentially complement national development strategies through a simultaneous response to skills gaps in the economy, particularly in entrepreneurship. To this end, the paper employs a content analysis approach to probe into the relevance of entrepreneurship in enhancing the self-employment of graduates and non-graduates alike as a means of curtailing unemployment and enhancing national economic development. The study deduced that graduate entrepreneurship education is important to national development as it enhances economic growth through the gained adequate knowledge, ideas, skills and motivation. The study, therefore, recommended that all educational agencies at various levels must collaborate to ensure the implementation of entrepreneurship education for accelerated economic development.

Abstract:
The emergence of entrepreneurship institutions, as a mechanism, is not only for sustainability, but access to micro-financing for entrepreneurs has also become pivotal owing to the heightened spate of economic degradation, growing poverty rates, and an upsurge in rural–urban migration, all currently occurring across the globe. This study adopted a descriptive survey research method, gathering data by using a questionnaire that served as the basis for analysis. Regression analysis techniques from the Statistical Package for Social Science were used to test the hypothesis. The study’s participants and research population, respectively, comprised 711 active National Youth Service Corps members from the Aniocha-North Local Government Area in the Delta State in Nigeria. The results indicate that entrepreneurship institutions impact entrepreneurs’ access to micro-financing and enterprise sustainability in emerging economies. Hence, the study recommends, as a policy implication, that entrepreneurship institutions should be established with capacity to provide for micro-finance enterprises, which will guarantee their sustainability, productivity and viability.

Abstract:
It becomes obvious that the critical problem of the governments in Nigeria is centred on how to sustain and maintain the territorial integrity of the country since we attained independence in 1960. The problem is traceable to the ethno-pluralistic and socio-cultural diversities among the various components that constitute the federal state. The British administration had profound influence on spatial imbalance and dualistic pace of the economy such that the country is polarized into poor rural, agricultural, disadvantaged on the one hand and urban, affluent, industrial and commercial on the other. The paper aimed at assessing the measures being adopted by successive governments in Nigeria towards national integration and stability in the midst of tribal, religious, and cultural differences. One made use of secondary information from official gazettes, journals, national dailies, literatures and research works. It was discovered that integrative measures such as adopting federal system of government, the issue of federal character, establishment of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and creation of more States and local governments have not yielded much improvements and achievement of maintaining unity, peace and progress. Instead, there has been political violence, ethnic clash, religious intolerance, civil unrests, armed robbery, leading to insecurity of life and properties. On this note, one recommends among other things an advocacy for holding national conference or referendum where rightful thinking stakeholders, elder-statesmen, political leaders and trade unions would put heads together and champion a new course for Nigeria to progress. Moreover, there should be social justice in the distribution and allocation of national resources to regions in the country without discrimination either on the ground of political, religious or tribal affiliations. The derivative principle should be strictly adhered to, such that wealth and mineral producing areas should have proportionate share of the national income. Finally, we should sink all differences in the country and allow democratic government to reign supreme in order to make Nigeria takes her rightful position in the world.

Abstract:
Primary health care (PHC) in most developing countries remains largely inaccessible to a vast proportion of urban and rural populations. It is neither influenced by, nor integrated with, preventive care/community development. This may be attributed partly to lack of community participation by communities. Professional health care is isolated and impervious to the influence of health care users. In Nigeria all functional correlates are available in the existing health systems; yet, the impact is not felt. What is needed, and urgently, is an intervention to extend meaningful health care delivery into the urban poor and rural communities. The Nigerian Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, through a rational and systematic mobilization and utilization of its health manpower, offers an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that PHC can work. A two-step intervention process is proposed: a reorientation during NYSC “orientation,” and a community-based practice module, during the NYSC “Primary Assignment” phase. Health professionals working as a “team,” and led by NYSC doctor(s), undertake their medical care responsibilities as well as community development projects as integrated aspects of PHC. It is envisaged that experiences accruing from such a deliberate intervention with a pilot project, will form a basis for operational adoption of the proposed CHIP as a national model.

Abstract:
There is a high level of unemployment amongst National Youth Service Corps-discharged graduates of universities and polytechnics in Nigeria, especially in Delta State. This necessitated guiding these graduates to take to low-skill, low-paying jobs, as an alternative to redundancy and the attendant indulgence in anti-social behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between vocational interest, skills possessed and vocational guidance techniques, and unemployed graduates’ readiness to enter into low-skill occupations. A research hypothesis was formulated for the correlational design study. Three instruments: the Modified Bakare Vocational Interest inventory (MB VII), the vocational skills possessed inventory (VSPI), and the vocational guidance techniques (counseling) were used. The study population comprised of all unemployed NYSC-discharged graduates in Delta State. Purposive sampling was used to select two Local Government Areas (LGA’s) from each of the three Senatorial Districts of Delta State (Six LGA’s). Random sampling was used to obtain two hundred and forty respondents from the six LGAs. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results indicated that vocational interest, skills possessed and counseling had significant relationships with unemployed graduate's readiness to enter low-skill occupations. They were all predictors of entry into low-skill jobs except counseling.

Abstract:
The assumption that youths are veritable tools in engineering electoral violence has long been established in Nigeria politics. Many of the elections held in the country at federal, state and local levels where violence had erupted, had behind the scenes youths as perpetrators. While some keep making themselves available to selfish individuals and organisations who empowers them to make elections tensed, hindering citizens, especially young ones from freely exercising their civic responsibilities, this is only a fraction of the Nigerian youth population and not the whole. There are more youths who are willing to join the electoral exercise but have become apolitical partly because of threats to their lives and properties if they participated in the electoral process. There have been cases were serving youth corps members, officiating during elections have been attacked and killed by fellow youth, likewise youth who have gone out to vote. Interestingly, Nigeria has a burgeoning young population with more than 70 percent under the age of 40. For peaceful elections and for representative democracy, the youth have a pivotal part to play. Hence, they are both the cause for and the cure against electoral violence in Nigeria. This paper, using desk research, seeks to go beyond the narrative of youth being used as tools to cause violence during elections to argue that the effects of their actions hamper in no small measure the impact their population is able to make in terms of national development and representative democracy.

ABSTRACT: Youth represent a pivotal demographic and social asset for every nation, serving as a critical component for national human resource development. Strategic investment in systematic and well-planned Youth Development Training (YDT) can unlock their innate potential and equip them to navigate career challenges effectively. The Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) offers YDT as a significant intervention for youth development, potentially fostering both individual growth and the sustainable progress of Bangladesh. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of BNCC’s YDT in developing leadership qualities, personal skills, and community development attitudes through quantitative analysis. An extensive literature review was meticulously undertaken, investigating deep into existing literature to identify the research gap areas, develop hypotheses, and carefully place the relevant variables essential for the study’s comprehensive analysis and interpretation. A survey instrument comprising sixteen variables was devised, employing the widely used five-point rating scale to assess participant responses. Primary data were collected from 170 male and female BNCC cadets. However, data analysis proceeded utilizing the one-sample “t-test” method. 14 out of 16 hypotheses were accepted with an admirable score. The findings of the study indicate that BNCC’s YDT significantly enhances leadership qualities, particularly in command skills and self-confidence among cadets. Additionally, the YDT program demonstrates a notable impact on fostering community development attitudes among participants. However, the YDT of BNCC is relatively poor in developing creative capability and Information Technology (IT) Skills among the cadets. Based on these results, specific policy recommendations are proposed, including heightened promotion of BNCC training and social development activities to its stakeholders, the establishment of leadership development institutes and innovation clubs, a memorandum of understanding with social service agencies to facilitate social development activities, and many more to maintain the area of strength, which could also contribute to remodeling the existing theories of youth development.

This paper examines how temporary exposure to a different ethnic region affects national integration, using original survey data from participants in Africa’s largest national youth service program. Seven years later, participants randomly assigned to serve in a state with a different ethnic majority are five times more likely to live all across the country compared to those who served in their ethnic region. They have more interethnic romantic relationships and express greater national pride. Nevertheless, immersion in a different region strengthens participants’ ethnic pride and favorable attitudes toward co-ethnics. The results suggest that national and ethnic identity can thrive together. (JEL D12, D91, J13, J15, O15)

Abstract:
Prevention and management of crime is one of the core mandate responsibilities of security agencies who are peoples that are trained to oversee the internal security system in Nigeria. These agencies includes Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Directorate of State Security Service(DSSS) and to some certain extend when the level of internal security is over raising Nigeria Militaries, both Land Armies, Air Force and Navy gives intervention hand to curtail the situations. The widespread of small arms and light weapons in Kano State has it is genesis from both locally manufactured and the imported ones that mostly passed from various porous or illegal borders that are located in the neighboring states of Kastina and Jigawa State. SALW are the primary tools that trigger both ethnic and internal conflict and other related violent crimes that poses a threat to internal security, democracy and the operation of good governance not only in Kano State but in Nigeria. SALW is one of the key major factor s that generate to various categories of crime like armed robbery, kidder napping, community violent conflict, insurgent attacks and the host of many other crimes. The paper uses the failed state theory to explain the gap how state as an institution fails in its responsibilities and also the paper is empirical in nature by conducting interviews and administering questionnaire to some selected respondent populations from security personnel’s, academicians, traditional institutions and Community Based Organization’s CBO’s. The paper was on the position that for democracy and good governance to be truly functional the internal security must be guaranteed by empowering security agencies in terms of increasing their number, effective training, enough working tools, good condition of service and providing policies that will address the level of poverty and unemployment in the society as well as prosecuting any member of elite that either imported the arms or given arms to youth for achieving his political interest.

Educators, mental health professionals, juvenile justice officers, and child welfare caseworkers often have first-hand knowledge of the trials uniquely faced by these vulnerable youth and are charged with mitigating harmful risks, such as mental health challenges, child abuse, drug use, and sex trafficking. Yet, less is known about whether or how social service providers assess and mitigate the online risk experiences of youth under their care. Therefore, as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps program, we conducted interviews with 37 social service providers (SSPs) who work with underprivileged youth to determine what (if any) online risks are most concerning to them given their role in youth protection, how they assess or become aware of these online risk experiences, and whether they see value in the possibility of using artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential solution for online risk detection. Overall, online sexual risks (e.g., sexual grooming and abuse) and cyberbullying were the most salient concern across all social service domains, especially when these experiences crossed the boundary between the digital and the physical worlds. Yet, SSPs had to rely heavily on youth self-reports to know whether and when online risks occurred, which required building a trusting relationship with youth; otherwise, SSPs became aware only after a formal investigation had been launched. Therefore, most SSPs found value in the potential for using AI as an early detection system and to monitor youth, but they were concerned that such a solution would not be feasible due to a lack of resources to adequately respond to online incidences, access to the necessary digital trace data (e.g., social media), context, and concerns about violating the trust relationships they built with youth. Thus, such automated risk detection systems should be designed and deployed with caution, as their implementation could cause youth to mistrust adults, thereby limiting the receipt of necessary guidance and support. We add to the bodies of research on adolescent online safety and the benefits and challenges of leveraging algorithmic systems in the public sector.

Abstract:
Sustainable rural development cannot occur without rural youth empowerment for entrepreneurship. In the face of the current staggering level of youth unemployment in Nigeria, there is the obvious need to seek for ways of empowering the youth for sustainable development. Poultry keeping stands as resource that can generate employment for millions of Nigerian youths in rural and peri-urban areas as entrepreneurs, skilled and unskilled workers. This paper through a review of literature examined the importance of poultry and explored how it can be exploited as a panacea for youth unemployment through entrepreneurship. It explores the potentials of it and shows the way the potentials of poultry can be harnessed for all youth empowerment programmes. It recommended that government, big farms, international and national corporations, should be involved in youth empowerment programmes through youth entrepreneurship in poultry production. Banks and other financial institutions should be mandated to assist the youth with soft loans in cash and kind through the provision of poultry infrastructure so as to make poultry farming attractive to the youth. A well-funded poultry extension advisory service need to be established to ensure the sustainability of the youth empowerment/ entrepreneurship poultry programmes across the country.

Abstract:
Background Nigeria has the second highest number of people living with HIV (PLWH) globally, and evidence-based approaches are needed to achieve national goals to identify, treat, and reduce new infections. Youth between the ages of 15–24, including young men who have sex with men (YMSM), are disproportionately impacted by the Nigerian HIV epidemic. The purpose of this study was to inform adaptation of evidence-based peer navigation and mHealth approaches (social media outreach to promote HIV testing; short messaging service text message reminders to promote HIV treatment engagement) to the local context within iCARE Nigeria, a multi-phase study designed to investigate combination interventions to promote HIV testing and care engagement among youth in Nigeria. Methods To elicit expert and community perspectives, a local group of advisors from academia, community, and governmental sectors provided feedback on intervention adaptation, which then informed a series of focus groups with stakeholders in Ibadan, Nigeria. Focus group data were collected over a period of three days in December of 2018. Participants in focus groups included YMSM and HIV-positive youth in care ages 16–24, and HIV service providers from local AIDS service organizations (ASO). Groups were stratified by HIV serostatus, gender, and stakeholder type. Focus group sessions were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using a content analysis approach. Results Local experts recommended intervention adaptations specific to the status of peer navigators as volunteers, peer characteristics (slightly older age, high maturity level, HIV/YMSM status), and intervention characteristics and resources (low navigator to peer ratio; flexible matching by demographic and social characteristics; social media platforms and content). Five focus group discussions with stakeholders, including 27 participants were conducted to elicit feedback on these and other potential adaptations. Youth participants (n = 21) were mean age 20 years (range = 16–24); 76% HIV-positive, 76% men and 48% MSM. Service providers (n = 6) represented both HIV prevention and care services. Participants across stratified subgroups reported largely positive perceptions and high perceived acceptability of both mHealth and peer navigation strategies, and echoed the recommendations of the advisory group for volunteer-based navigators to promote altruism, with a low navigator-peer ratio (1:5). Participants emphasized the need to incorporate minimal mobile data use strategies and popular social media platforms among YMSM (e.g., Facebook, Grindr) for widespread access and reach of the interventions. Conclusions In Ibadan, Nigeria, stakeholders support the adaptation of combined mHealth and peer navigation strategies to promote HIV testing and care engagement among high-risk youth. Recommended adaptations for the local context reflect concerns about the feasibility and sustainability of the intervention and are expected to improve accessibility and acceptability.

Abstract:
Abstract This study examines the influence of self-efficacy and socio-demographic factors on the entrepreneurial intentions of selected Youth Corp members. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design and a sample size of 300 National Youth Service Corp members were randomly selected in the five divisions of Lagos State with ages ranging from 18 to 30. Three hypotheses were tested using multiple regression and t-tests. The results show that there is a significant joint influence of sex, age, ethnicity and self-efficacy on entrepreneurial intentions (r2 = 0.90; P <.01]; male participants are more susceptible to entrepreneurial intentions than their female counterparts [t = 26.46, P <.01] and that Youth Corp members with a high self-efficacy rate significantly higher on entrepreneurial intentions (t = 25.09, P <.01]. Based on these findings, the study recommended that a self-efficacy programme should be included in the school curriculum so as to enhance entrepreneurial intentions among fresh graduates and, by so doing, reducing the high rate of unemployment in society. It was also recommended that future studies should use a larger sample and explore experimental methods so as to see if a causal relationship can be established among variables.
