Abstract:
Retorika kā pārliecināšanas māksla kopš Aristoteļa laikiem, īpaši pēdējā gadsimta laikā, izpelnījusies kritiskās diskursa analīzes pētnieku uzmanību. Retoriskie jautājumi kā viens no politiskajā diskursā lietotajiem retorisko līdzekļu veidiem tiek škietami par zemu novērtēti, it sevišķi situācijās, kad runas mērķis nav skaidri redzama argumentācija, pārliecināšana vai manipulācija. Attiecīgi retorisko jautājumu slēptā doma enkurojas dziļāk diskursa uztveres procesā un tādējādi atmiņā tiek uzglabāta ilgāk. Pētījumā analizētas 175 Baltijas valstu prezidentu runas, kas sniegtas dažādos nacionāli svarīgos brīžos kopš Latvijas valsts neatkarības pasludināšanas vai neatkarības atjaunošanas Lietuvā un Igaunijā līdz valstu simtgadei 2018. gadā. Veiktais pētījums salīdzina retorisko jautājumu lietojumu prezidentu runās sinhronajā un diahronajā skatījumā un analizē to potenciālo ietekmi uz klausītāju, ņemot vērā jautājumu tematisko un diskursīvo saturu Baltijas valstu sociālā, vēsturiskā un politiskā kontekstā. Pētījuma rezultātā tiek secināts, ka retorisko jautājumu lietojums, izmantojot tādas nacionālās identitātes veidošanas stratēģijas kā kopējās politiskās vēstures konstrukcija, valsts kā nacionāla kopuma komunikācija un nāciju politiskās tagadnes un nākotnes konstrukcija, var uzrunāt cilvēku zemapziņas emocionālo līmeni un konkrēti atbildības un piederības sajūtu, tādējādi netieši veidojot klausītāju uztveri un ietekmējot to potenciālo rīcību attiecībā pret valsti. Turklāt vairākos gadījumos tiek secināts, ka retoriskie jautājumi lietoti kombinācijā ar citiem stratēģiski spēcīgiem valodas līdzekļiem, kā metafora, hiperbola un paralēlās teikumu struktūras, kas pastiprina vēlamo retorisko efektu uz klausītāju. Tāpat, salīdzinot retorisko jautājumu lietojumu sinhronajā aspektā tika secināts, ka Latvijas un Lietuvas prezidentu runās šie jautājumi tiek lietoti retāk nekā Igaunijas prezidentu runās. Attiecībā uz diahronajām izmaiņām retorisko jautājumu lietojumā, secināts, ka laika gaitā retorisko jautājumu skaits runās palielinās, tomēr šīs izmaiņas drīzāk ietekmē tādi savstarpēji neatkarīgi radītāji kā prezidenta politiskā piederība, runas mērķis, kontekstuālā situācija vai runas tips un mērķauditorija.

Abstract The objective of this paper is to analyze a particular part of French and German language planning discourse in a comparative perspective. In this context, the purpose of the article is to reveal the metalinguistic use and function of the common and frequently used national identity motive. Considering discourse linguistics as an appropriate applied linguistics approach, a case study rather focuses on the topical structure and on specific argument layouts as they play a vital part in language-related discourse and metalinguistic interaction as a major domain of national identity construction.

Abstract:
Momentan besteht hohes wissenschaftspolitisches Interesse an der Entwicklung von Forschungsinfrastrukturen in allen Wissenschaftsbereichen. Wir plädieren dafür, ein national gefördertes Onlinelabor für die psychologische Forschung in diesen Diskurs einzubringen. Dieses Labor sollte einen großen Teilnehmerpool, notwendige Software-Tools, edukative Komponenten (Methodenberatung) sowie Schnittstellen zu Datenarchiven zur Verfügung stellen. Die Vorteile einer solchen Einrichtung werden auf der Basis von Effizienzbetrachtungen sowie methodischen und forschungsethischen Überlegungen verdeutlicht. Abschließend diskutieren wir mittelfristige Entwicklungspotenziale eines Nationalen Onlinelabors.

Abstract Das ,Nationalepos‘ entsteht um 1800 aus einer spezifischen Diskursformation. Es beruht auf der Vorstellung, dass der identitäre Inbegriff einer Nation – der ,Volksgeist‘ – sich in einem zentralen Text manifestieren könne. Insofern wird das Nationalepos im 19. Jahrhundert zu einem der Schlüsseltexte des Nationalismus. Der Drang, ebenfalls ein solches Epos vorweisen zu können, ist dabei ein europäisches – und auch über Europa hinausgehendes – Phänomen. Die zeitgenössischen Theorien des Epos, die zur entsprechenden Auratisierung der Gattung entscheidend beigetragen haben, werden damit zu Blaupausen, um solche Texte herzustellen. Der Beitrag skizziert einige wichtige Momente dieser Epostheorien, um dann vier aus ihnen hervorgehende Praktiken zu beschreiben, mit deren Hilfe Nationalepen konstituiert wurden: Finden (am Beispiel des französischen Chanson de Roland), Fälschen (die böhmischen Handschriften aus Königinhof und Grünberg), Ordnen (das finnische Kalevala) und Singen (am Nibelunge-Epos von Wilhelm Jordan).The article deals with the national epic as a specific generic constellation that emerges around 1800. Conceived to be the manifestation of a nation’s identity – its ,spirit‘ –, the national epic serves as one of the textual cornerstones of contemporary nationalism. The will to ,own‘ an epic, become a compulsion among the European nations. Contemporary genre theories that are debated internationally, help to provide the epic with its exceptional aura, at the same time serving as models for the establishment of such texts. Thus, the nationalist epic must, quite ironically, be conceived as a European phenomenen, resulting from transnational cultural transfer. First, the article sketches some key aspects of contemporary theories of the genre; second, it presents four ways of constituting a national epic outlined by these theories: finding, forging, ordering, and singing, using as examples the French Chanson de Roland, the Bohemian Manuscripts from Königinhof and Grünberg, the Finnish Kalevala, and Wilhelm Jordan’s German Nibelunge.

Zusammenfassung. Die Anzahl der Kinder und Jugendlichen, die sich aufgrund von Geschlechtsinkongruenzerleben und/oder Geschlechtsdysphorie in den Kliniken für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie und Psychotherapie bzw. den vorhandenen Trans-Spezialsprechstunden vorstellen, ist in den letzten Jahren deutlich gestiegen. Sowohl national als auch international findet ein Diskurs über die psychotherapeutischen und medizinischen Gesundheitsbedarfe dieser jungen Menschen sowie die zugrunde liegende ethische Auslegung der Problematik statt. Die divergierenden Expertenmeinungen und fachlichen Verunsicherungen spiegeln sich nicht zuletzt in der unzureichenden psychotherapeutischen und psychiatrischen Versorgung für die geschlechtlich nonkonformen und geschlechtsdysphorischen Kinder und Jugendlichen wider. Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einen Überblick über die verfügbaren epidemiologischen Daten, den gesellschaftlichen, rechtlichen und medizinischen Paradigmenwechsel, die Entwicklungen in den neuen diagnostischen Klassifikationssysteme (DSM-5, ICD-11) sowie über wichtige Aspekte der AWMF-S3-Leitlinie „Geschlechtsinkongruenz, Geschlechtsdysphorie und Trans-Gesundheit“ für das Erwachsenenalter. Auf dieser Basis werden der aktuelle Diskurs und die ethischen Dilemmata im Kindes- und Jugendalter dargestellt sowie die sich daraus ergebenden Herausforderungen für die Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie und Psychotherapie skizziert.

Review: Jana Marková, Religiöse Konzepte im tschechischen nationalen Diskurs (1860–1885), Georg Olms Verlag, Hildesheim – Zürich – New York 2016, 371 pp.The article reviews a book, which analyzes a portion of Czech national discourse of the second half of the 19th century, looking into the vocabulary it used to express concepts characteristic of the discourse of religion. The research material is constituted by the Czech texts from the period, concerning mostly two events of great importance to the Czech national movement. One of the events was the 1868 laying of the foundation stone for the National Theatre in Prague; the other – the 1873 centennial of the lexicographer, writer and linguist Josef Jungmann. Materiału badawczego dostarczają pochodzące z epoki czeskojęzyczne teksty, które dotyczą głównie dwóch wydarzeń o doniosłym znaczeniu dla czeskiego ruchu narodowego. У статті розглянуті мовленнєві маніпуляції як інструментальне вираження персуазивності у мовленні. Маніпуляцію розглядають як особливу комунікативно-мовленнєву стратегію здійснення впливу в політичному дискурсі, яка реалізується через низку тактик. Вибір тактик зазнає впливу концептуального стилю автора політичного дискурсу. У статті проаналізовані тактики реалізації стратегії негативної презентації «інших», зокрема, тактики «Надгенералізація» та «Екземпліфікація», як маркери концептуальних стилів президентів США Дж. Буша мол. та Б. Обами. Доведено, що особливості мовлення носіїв різних стилів зумовлюють вищу частотність певних тактик та, відповідно, нижчу частотність інших тактик. Тактика «Екземпліфікація» – це перенесення рис, що притаманні певній етнічній (чи іншій) групі загалом на конкретну подію чи особу. Ця тактика може вважатися типовою для дискурсу Дж. Буша мол., концептуальний стиль якого є аналітичним, що пояснюється дедуктивністю мовлення носіїв аналітичного стилю та їх схильністю до надмірного використання ярликів. Індуктивність мовлення Б. Обами, який є носієм реляційного концептуального стилю, пояснює вищу частотність тактики «Надгенералізація» у його дискурсі. «Надгенералізація» – це узагальнення одиничної моделі, певних аспектів часткового досвіду до загальної групової схеми.

Abstract:
Syftet med föreliggande studie var att undersöka hur svensk diskurs i läromedel diskursivt konstruerar svensk tillhörighet och svenska levnadsvillkor och hur detta framställs i fyra läromedel för gymnasieskolan. Ovanstående begrepp kommer sedermera att konkretiseras och benämnas i diskursanalytiska termer, samt att ses som en del av nationell diskurs med utgångspunkten att diskursen är en diskursiv konstruktion. Frågeställningen som studien ämnade att besvara var;   Hur konstrueras svenskhet diskursivt i de utvalda läromedlen?   Ovanstående syfte och frågeställning undersöktes genom en diskursanalys med avstamp ur en diskursteoretisk ansats. Genom att förena kategorierna svensk tillhörighet samt svenska levnadsvillkor som har använts för att göra urval i materialet, med analysverktygen flytande signifikanter och ekvivalenskedjor, så möjliggjorde detta att besvara frågeställningen i undersökningen av empirin.    Studiens resultat visade att identiteskonstruktioner och grupbbildning var återkommande teman som diskursivt konstruerades och upprätthölls genom att sättas i opposition till andra element, aspekter av det “svenska” sattes i relation till “de andra”, “invandrare” och “invandrargrupper” och fick således sin betydelsetillskrivning i diskursen. Genom att framhäva den svenska arbetsmarknaden i termer av moderna och samhällsutvecklande mekanismer så lyftes stora företag och enskilda förhållanden på den svenska arbetsmarknaden fram som särskilt viktiga inom ramen för svensk diskurs. I detta avseende så betonades att inom ramen för det “svenska” så kännetecknades detta av hög sysselsättningsgrad, produktiva och välutbildade medborgare, jämställdhet samt de svenska företagens roll som en starkt bidragande faktor till samhällsutvecklingen.

The aim of this study was to analyze how discourses about domestic violence emerges in policy and practice, and to investigate how those discourses may change from a structural, political level to a local, practical level. The research questions focused how the problem of domestic violence is formulated at national and local level, scrutinizing the different discourses framing and reproducing the causes and solutions of the problem, and also to deduce how different context affects formulations. The empirical material consists of policy plans and interviews with social workers. The findings indicates that the issue of domestic violence is articulated differently on different levels. In action plans on the national level, the domestic violence is formulated within a structural discourse, being a problem on a (gender-) political level, whereas professional social workers recognizes domestic violence as a personal problem within an individual oriented discourse. On the local level, domestic violence is viewed as something separated from the gender influenced discourse identified on the structural level. The discourses change in relation to the surrounding contexts and depend on both time and space. Unanimously domestic violence is addressed as a serious problem that should be managed with individual efforts. Conflicting discourses lead to incomprehension between theory and practice, and victims of violence are treated with other measures than the ones that the government out mapped.

Uppsatsens syfte har varit att studera uttryck för banal nationalism i svenska dagstidningar under världsmästerskapen i fotboll för herrar i USA 1994. Dels för att vidga begreppet nationalism, dels bidra med exempel på hur den kan synliggöras i vardagliga sammanhang och därigenom riskerar reproducera nationella föreställningar. Uppsatsens teoretiska ramverk har varit Michael Billigs diskursteori banal nationalism med understöd av Marianne Winther Jørgensens och Louise Phillips begreppsmetaforer för nationella diskurser. För att kunna genomföra en fördjupad analys har uppsatsen haft kompletterande forskningsfrågor om hur Sveriges spelare och tränare samt hur Sveriges motståndarspelare och motståndartränare framställs i materialet. Empirin har bestått utav 157 publiceringar inklusive tidningarnas omslag fördelat över 26 utgåvor av Aftonbladet (9), Expressen (9) samt Dagens Nyheter (8). Analysen visar att banal nationalism i hög utsträckning, på ett till synes omedvetet sätt, varit del i utgåvornas publiceringar kring världsmästerskapen. De uttryck för banal nationalism som förekommer kan ses som försök till att skapa engagemang och intresse hos läsare, men dessa språkliga val bidrar likväl till att producera och reproducera en närmast självklar nationell gemenskap. Därtill är skildringar av Sveriges spelare och tränare likartad mellan tidningar och utgåvor, samt står i kontrast till skildringar av motståndare. De förstnämnda ges egenskaper såsom ödmjuka och lojala, kloka och beslutsamma. Motståndare porträtteras inte sällan som irrationella och oberäkneliga. Styrdokument och historiedidaktisk forskning föreskriver att en elevcentrerad undervisning bör bedrivas, vilket ställer krav på historielärare att vara förtrogen med begrepp som nationalism. Uppsatsen visar att nationella föreställningar på ett oreflekterat sätt kan produceras och reproduceras i till synes vardagliga sammanhang. Resultatet kan således anses bidra med ett angeläget perspektiv för blivande historielärare att reflektera över.<br>The purpose of this essay has been to study expressions of banal nationalism in Swedish media during the World Cup in the United States 1994. It is meant to expand the knowledge of nationalism in day-to-day life, and how nationalistic ideas might be reproduced and reinforced. The theoretic framework of this essay relies on Michael Billigs discourse theory of banal nationalism, supplemented by Marianne Winther Jørgensens and Louise Phillips theories on metaphors in relation to national discourse. The investigated material consists of 157 different kinds of publications including first pages spread over 26 issues of Aftonbladet (9), Expressen (9) and Dagens Nyheter (8). The analysis shows that banal nationalism is prominent in the issue’s printed materials during the World Cup. The portrayals of Swedish’s players and coach are similar between newspapers and issues and stand in stark contrast to portrayals of the opponents. First mentioned are characterized as humble, loyal, wise and determined. Opponents are often characterized as unpredictable and inconstant. These expressions can be seen as attempts to create engagement and involvement, but nevertheless they´re also a part of producing and reproducing an almost self-explanatory national community. Ruling school documents and history didactic research shows that student-centered learning is preferrable, which demands a history teacher who is confidant with terms like nationalism. This essay shows that national conceptions can be produced and reproduced in ordinary life situations, in a seemingly unreflected way. The results can therefore be considered a meaningful perspective for soon-to-be history teachers to reflect upon.

This thesis concerns political communication during the coronavirus pandemic and aims to examine how Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron articulate power and national identity in two speeches. The research questions posed were 1) Which were the communicated discourses in Donald Trump’s and Emmanuel Macron’s speeches to their respective nations? 2) What are the similarities and/or differences between how Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron communicated power and which part does national identity play in their speeches? The theoretical framework used involved Foucault’s theories concerning discourse as well as his notions on power, discipline, knowledge, truth, and governmentality, which were also used as an analytical framework. Moreover, the research questions were answered using a qualitative content analysis on the textual aspects of the speeches and a semiotic analysis on the visual aspects of the speeches. The results concluded that both Trump and Macron frequently used nationalistic discourses in order to unite and coordinate their respective nations, as well as economic and political discourses. Macron also used a militaristic discourse in his speech, while Trump isolated and elevated the United States from the rest of the world. Furthermore, power was manifested through political decisions and appealed to individual responsibility and discipline. Additionally, Macron highlighted state power with rules and punishment. Finally, this study can shed light on populist political communication during the coronavirus pandemic.

I nutid förefaller samtalet om seger och förlust vid användningen av det militära maktmedlet omformulerat till något annat än uttryck som seger och förlust. Detta kan upplevas som förunderligt, då målet med militärmakt borde vara konstant över tiden. Vad har orsakat denna transformering av att uttrycka sig i termer av seger eller förlust vid användningen av det militära maktmedlet? Är segerbegreppet rent av inte tillämpligt i moderna konflikter eller är det så att Sverige, ståendes utanför militära allianser, inte har ett behov av sådan retorik? Syftet med undersökningen är att, med hjälp av hypotesprövning hitta svaret på hur segerbegreppet används i den nutida svenska politiska retoriken. Hypoteserna som ligger till grund för undersökningen, skapas ur teorier om svensk strategisk kultur. Undersökningen visar att den politiska retoriken kring seger och förlust och nyttjandet av segerbegreppet, påverkas av strategisk kultur. Resultatet visar en skillnad mellan den politiska retoriken med utgångspunkt i den nationella kontexten av strategisk kultur i förhållande till en utgångspunkt i den internationella kontexten. Undersökningens resultat visar även att den politiska retoriken kring segerbegreppet påverkas av utvecklingen i den aktuella insatsen och är således föränderlig.

<p>Genom en komparativ diskursanalys undersöks i uppsatsen hur media gestaltat två olika humanitära katastrofer. Analysen baseras på ett urval av ledarartiklar som skildrat de båda händelserna. Genom det diskursanalytiska angreppssättet förs mycket textnära resonemang om vad texterna uttrycker. Fokus ligger på hur de olika händelserna omtalas, på vilket sätt händelserna byggs upp och vad de gestaltar. Jämförelsen av två olika händelser är till för att tydligare kunna visa på olika sätt att gestalta händelser samt att studera vilka olika utfall de olika skildringarna kan få. </p><p>Analysen utgår från teorier om nationen som gemenskap, och problematiserar utifrån dessa tendenserna till att överfokusera den egna nationens medborgare medan andra nationers och människors lidanden hamnar i skymundan. Utifrån postkoloniala teorier problematiseras de stereotypa gestaltningar av andra nationer och dess medborgare som görs genom artiklarna, och resonemang förs kring vilka konsekvenser sådana gestaltningar får för engagemang och intresse. Ett tydligt maktperspektiv blir här tydligt. </p><p>Public journalism är den övergripande teori som används för att studera medias roll och vikt i allt detta. Uppsatsen centreras kring begrepp som närhet och avstånd, allmänmänsklighet och nationella intressen och diskussionen rör främst vilka positioner de olika aktörer tilldelas genom texterna samt vad dessa positioner innebär för handlingsmöjligheter. The purpose of this paper is to understand how national identity is discursively constructed by Hizbullah at a time of national crisis, and to shed light on its potential effects on the social world. The critical discourse analysis focuses on how difference and otherness are constructed on Hizbullah’s television channel Al-Manar. It illuminates Hizbullah’s discursive construal of a national in-group and an ‘enemy’ out-group, and identifies the main discourses that Hizbullah draws upon. The backdrop is the violent events in the Lebanese town of Arsal, erupting in early August 2014 and soon amounting to a national crisis. How Hizbullah, one of the main political actors in Lebanon and the region, constructs the world discursively does arguably have impact on the social world. The analysis identifies an order of discourse that on the one hand is permeated by pluralism and inclusion and on the other hand influenced by an exclusionary discourse connecting the out-group to terrorism. The author suggests that the Western discourse of ‘war on terrorism’ has been recontextualised by Hizbullah, and argues that there are reasons to pay close attention to the potentially harmful socially constructive effects of this discourse. Nevertheless, a cross-confessional national unity is simultaneously highlighted in Hizbullah’s discourse.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyse the representation of Scottish and English national identity in the tv-series Outlander (2014-). By recreating a historically influenced narrative of relations between Scotland and England, in the aftermath of the Union of 1707 and the upcoming Jacobite rebellion of 1745, the series also mediate a disputed collective British identity. Therefore, it is imperative to analyse how pop-culture functionalises memories of nations’ historical past to influence contemporary identities. First, I establish an inventory of semiotic mythic tokens of national identity. I then conduct a contextual analysis of national discursive identity on these. A further theoretical sociohistorical framework of contemporary ideology, mediated through pop-culture, materialises Outlanders impact on viewers’ own creation of identity. Through representations of myth Outlander mediates the stereotypical, romanticised image of Scottish highlanders as “superstitious barbarians” - a dualistic concept of national identity, depending on its context. To the viewer it’s an idealised image of someone rebellious, living outside the industrialised and modernised society. To the English/British soldiers it’s an image of the underdeveloped, uncivilised savage, the soldiers themselves being portrayed in Outlander as the cultivated superior in pursuit of cultural salvation for their inferior. The national discourse of both nations is symbiotic and dependent, each in need of the other’s binary identity to recreate its own. However, establishing a collective British national identity in Outlander also means a cultural sacrifice of the inferior to the superior – the cultural heritage of British identity should build on English national discourse alone. An important conclusion this study draws is the similarity between the dependency national discourses have to their binary “other” and contemporary society depending on the past in the creation of its identity. This recreational process is no longer, in a time of mass media, solely inherited by individual collective communities.

The paper summarizes the development and optimization of a flexible test facility for 3D tomographic PIV/PTV measurements of the flow field in the rotor gap of a Tesla friction turbine and performance evaluations. The main aim of the experiment will be the validation of CFD simulations. Another intention is to gain a deeper understanding of the flow phenomena in the gap. The extension of existing theoretical investigations lead to an improved knowledge of dimensioning such bladeless turbines with the goal of maximum power and efficiency. The mechanical design of the rotor, based on these equations, was optimized for a minimal deformation and low mechanical stress. Modal and harmonic response analyses due to imbalance forces have been performed to ensure low vibrations during operation. The design of the feed and guide vanes have been optimized for uniformity of the flow entering the Tesla disk’s gap. The rotor outlet is optimized to achieve minimal pressure loss at the intended exit swirl angle. For the demonstration of the measurement technique preliminary tomographic PIV/PTV tests have been carried out. The measurement, safety monitoring and feedback-control software was developed for running on a National Instruments compact RIO real-time target.

The United States spends over 700 billion dollars on foreign oil every year. A promising method to reduce this dependence, and be carbon-neutral as well, is concentrated solar thermochemical technology. Concentrated solar thermochemical technology has the potential to directly convert sunlight into a useable, carbon-neutral fuel that can be easily stored and integrated into our existing forms of energy demand such as transportation and heating fuels. Research is being performed by several groups at Sandia National Laboratories to fundamentally understand the complex physics and chemistry occurring within a solar thermochemical reactor prototype named the CR5 [counter-rotating-ring receiver/reactor/recuperator]. The objective of the work presented in this paper is to understand recuperative heat transfer within the CR5 as a function of reactor geometry and operational conditions. The CR5 vessel utilizes counter-rotating disks to provide for thermal energy recuperation, which is a necessity for an efficient reactor. Initially a simplified steady-state two-dimensional recuperation analysis was made to evaluate the relationship between the reactive material fin height and recuperation. The results from the simplified two-dimensional model indicate that recuperation is a strong function of fin height. Next, a more detailed, but still simplified, transient, three-dimensional model was developed. The initial three-dimensional simulations presented in this paper were performed to determine recuperator effectiveness and mesh density requirements for a generic case that had 2.5 kW energy input, fin height to gap ratio of 0.9, and finned reactor disks rotating at 1 rpm. A recuperator effectiveness of 88% and 85% was calculated from the finer and coarser meshes, suggesting that the coarser mesh (lumped in the fin thickness direction) is adequate for future parametric analysis simulations. This analysis will lead to a better understanding of recuperation as a function of reactor geometry, energy input, rotational speed, and thermophysical properties.

Collaboration between the Samara National Research University [1] and the JSC “KUZNETSOV” [2] included the research efforts in the field of increasing the performance of NK-36ST [3] gas turbine power plant intended for use as a driving unit of a gas compression station. The requirements included 3% increase in engine efficiency while keeping the maximum number of engine parts unchanged. First, the thermogasdynamic simulator of the NK-36ST gas turbine power plant was developed and verified using the results of experimental investigations. The impact of various parameters of the engine upon its efficiency was thoroughly investigated and the approach to modernization preserving most of the engine parts was suggested. This approach included increasing the values of work process parameters, the hydraulic efficiency of turbomachinery and reducing the cooling air consumption. Second, the analysis of the working process of turbomachinery was carried out. The air-gas channel in a meridional section was kept unchanged for the first iteration, thus keeping the parts of the initial engine unchanged, except for the blades and vanes of turbomachinery. For this variant, the parameters of compressors (head ratio and flow ratio) changed to more favorable values, supposedly providing 1–2% higher efficiency. Unfortunately, for this variant and the given restrictions the points, corresponding to the parameters of turbines moved at the Smith diagram to the unfavorable areas, thus making the increase in turbine efficiency very unlikely. The analysis had shown that to provide more convenient values of turbine parameters the blades should be shortened, and this decrease in blade length provides the possibility to increase the rotational speed of the rotor with the same strain levels of the blades and disks. As the result, the gas channel configuration and values of rotational speeds for the turbines providing the increase in their efficiency by 0.5%–1.0% were suggested. The suggested gas channel configuration preserves the same inner diameters thus keeping the disks layout the same. At the next stage, the shapes of the low-pressure turbine and compressor blades and the blades of free turbine were optimized using the Profiler program (developed at the Samara University), the NUMECA [4] system and the IOSO [5] optimization package, providing the 0.5%–1.0% increase in the efficiency in comparison to the initial variant. The results of the described research efforts provide the increase in engine efficiency of about 3% while providing the possibility to keep most of the rotor parts of the engine unchanged.

Abstract:
As energy and fuel security continue to be of increasing importance to economies around the world, countries are looking to move away from oil dependency. Energy solutions are being sought in the area of solar fuels to meet these growing needs. Concentrated solar thermochemical technology has the potential to directly convert sunlight into a useable, carbon-neutral liquid fuel that can be easily stored and integrated into our existing forms of energy demand such as transportation and heating fuels. Ongoing research performed by several groups at Sandia National Laboratories seeks to fundamentally understand the complex physics and chemistry occurring within a solar thermochemical reactor prototype named the CR5 [counter-rotating-ring receiver/reactor/recuperator]. The CR5 utilizes a stack of counter-rotating disks with metal oxide reactive material fins which are cycled through oxidation and reduction zones. The metal oxide is thus used to reduce H2O and CO2 into H2 and CO respectively, which can be combined using known processes to form a liquid fuel. The effectiveness of such a solar thermochemical reactor depends on its ability to efficiently integrate reduction and oxidation reactions, a solar receiver, thermal recuperation, and separation of end product gases. Efficient separation of end product gases within the reactor is of critical importance as without it, the crossover of gases occurs, which results in lower reduction rates, recombination of end product gases, and additional energy spent in downstream processes. A validation reactor model called the CR5v (v for validation) has been fabricated to validate numerical models of the reactor processes. Crossover testing is done without any chemical reactions (therefore with no O2 or H2 present), but rather by examining the flow of CO2 and Argon. This work presents experimental crossover for the CR5v reactor as a function of ring rotation speed, internal purge gas, and sweep gas to injection gas ratio. Initial crossover experimental results from the CR5v reactor suggest that crossover levels are largely not affected by ring rotation, center purge or injection gas/sweep gas ratio. Argon flow remained on average at a crossover value of 52 %, while CO2 crossover levels were on average around 8 %. The crossover flow in the system is thought to be dominated by the flow rates of the two pumps used in the system and to a lesser degree, the geometry of the system.
