Abstract:
Abstract This book contains 23 chapters divided into seven parts. Part I reviews the key hypotheses in invasion ecology that invoke biotic interactions to explain aspects of plant invasion dynamics; and reviews models, theories and hypotheses on how invasion performance and impact of introduced species in recipient ecosystems can be conjectured according to biotic interactions between native and non-native species. Part II deals with positive and negative interactions in the soil. Part III discusses mutualistic interactions that promote plant invasions. Part IV describes antagonistic interactions that hinder plant invasions, while part V presents the consequences of plant invasions for biotic interactions among native species. In part VI, novel techniques and experimental approaches in the study of plant invasions are shown. In the last part, biotic interactions and the management of ecosystems invaded by non-native plants are discussed.

Abstract:
Invasive species come in all sizes, from plant pathogens like the chestnut blight in eastern North America, to the red imported fire ant that has spread throughout the South, the predatory Indian mongoose now found in the Caribbean and Hawaii, and the huge Burmese python populating the Florida swamps. And while many invasive species are safe and even beneficial, the more harmful varieties cost the world economy billions of dollars annually, devastate agriculture, spread painful and even lethal diseases, and otherwise diminish our quality of life in myriad surprising ways. In Invasive Species: What Everyone Needs to Know, award-winning biologist Daniel Simberloff offers a wide-ranging and informative survey that sheds light on virtually every aspect of these biological invaders. Filled with case studies of an astonishing array of invasive species, the book covers such topics as how humans introduce these species-sometimes inadvertently, but often deliberately-the areas that have suffered the most biological invasions, the methods we use to keep our borders safe, the policies we currently have in place to manage these species, and future prospects for controlling their spread. An eminent ecologist, Simberloff analyzes the direct and indirect impacts of invasive species on various ecosystems, such as when non-native species out-compete native species for food or light, describes how invasive species (such as the Asian mosquito that is a vector for West Nile virus, itself an invasive species) transmit pathogens, and explains his acclaimed theory of "invasional meltdown" in which two or more introduced species combine to produce a far more devastating impact than any one of them would have caused alone. The book also discusses the more controversial issues surrounding invasive species and it concludes with suggested readings and a list of related web sites.

Abstract:
American mink, native to North America, have been transported around the world for fur farming – inevitably some individuals escaped, and they now occur in the wild across Eurasia and in South America, where they have had devastating impacts on native prey and competitors. This chapter gives an overview of a research project focusing on mink management in the north of Scotland, UK. It assesses, first, how mink have spread across Scotland, and, specifically, to what extent habitat suitability and food availability has influenced the current distribution of mink. It then considers how we might use knowledge of population structure across the landscape to target control efforts, and, finally, whether volunteers can play a useful role in mink control in this area. The chapter is concluded with a discussion of what we might learn from this Scottish case study with respect to the wider issue of invasive American mink elsewhere.

Abstract:
This chapter tells the story of how a few biologists came to question whether non-native species were being objectively evaluated with regard to their threat to biodiversity and ecosystems. The chapter examines the criteria that are commonly used to evaluate whether species should be labeled as invasive aliens, and suggests there is merit in assessing both the positive and negative contributions of species. Because invasion biology is a heavily value-laden field in which logic does not always reign, there is resistance to considering the benefits that might accrue from non-native species. Now is the time to think hard about which species are likely to cause clear harm so that management interventions can be aimed where they are most needed, and limited resources are not squandered on relatively harmless ecological invasions.
