Abstract:
Here, nature and culture walk hand in hand”. Images of German culture in the early Flemish movement (1844-1848). In the 1840s, the Flemish movement cultivated a strong connection to the German culture. This paper discusses the image of the German territories and German culture, in particular German literature, amongst the Flemish nationalists. An analyses of the pro-German periodicals De Broederhand and Het Taelverbond shows that these nationalists had a very romantic image of Germany as rural and characterized by unspoiled nature. The two periodicals sketch an image of a country where everybody is a poet or a philosopher. In the eyes of the Flemish nationalists, German music and literature managed to keep its ‘true’ folksy character. The authenticity of German culture made it superior to in particular French culture. According to the two magazines, Flanders has to follow the example of the Germans in keeping alive its language and past.

Abstract:
This essay questions the increasing call for broad conservation strategies to sustain and support biodiversity in the Swiss forest. Three arguments build the basis for this discussion: 1) Forests, together with the alpine mountain zones, represent the most extensive ecosystems in Switzerland. As a consequence of the continuous expansion of the forest area, biodiversity of forest organisms is not generally at risk. 2) Endangered species are less frequent in mountain forests than in lowland forests. 3) Populations of different species groups have been subjected to large, natural fluctuations over the last 3000 years. The biodiverse forest model, which is aspired today, resembles more an intensively or even overused forest of former times than a natural or even pristine forest. I conclude that future forest management should focus on the preservation of natural processes rather than biodiversity. Since Switzerland lacks large contiguous zones of natural forests, existing incentives should be more effectively used to achieve this goal.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aims to discuss the installations made in the 1970s to the present day, which dialogue directly with the “natural” landscape, extending the significance of the artistic object to the reconfiguration of the space. In particular, works that have action in the biophysical space will be discussed, in which elements of the environment become devices of artistic manifestation. It will be seen that these performances transform the landscape and the notion of a work of art, creating tensions in what we understand as nature and culture.

Abstract:
We evaluated the need for low temperatures (vernalization) and the photoperiodic reaction of three collections of winter oats (1. Pedarn, Maris Quest, Peniarth; 2. Gerald, Solva, Kymon, Pendragon; 3. Pewi, Silwi, Wiskas) in a comparison with spring oats varieties. All three collections of varieties showed little need for low temperatures, mostly as few as 10–20 days, which does not represent an obligatory need; this influence is only quantitative and constitutes no precondition for a passage of plants into the generative stage. Only in the case of the Maris Quest variety, the need for vernalization approached 30 days. As compared with the reaction of winter barley varieties that had and in some cases still have worse overwintering in the Czech Republic, the length of vernalization is equal. In the photoperiodic experiment, the reaction to a short autumn day turned out to be the critical condition for a possibility of autumn sowing and overwintering; in the case of these varieties, a short day inhibits the development until arrival of winter. We evaluated this reaction according to the length of the induction period. This period was only 10–15 days in the case of the spring oats Český žlutý, 30 days in the case of winter oats Maris Quest, 25 days for Pedarn, 20 days for Peniarth and 21 days for Pendra-gon; the induction period was 14–21 days in the case of varieties Gerald, Kymon and Solva. When compared with figures for winter barley, it had the longer photoperiodic induction period. The evaluated varieties of winter oats do not reach such a degree of a reaction to a short day, which manifests itself in their lower frosthardiness than that of winter barley. We verified that in provoking tests for frosthardiness, and also by lower critical values of temperatures for dying out of 50% of plants, the so-called LT 50.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since the beginning of the 1990s the importance of nature protection in the forests of the canton of Argovia has increased. Since then, in collaboration with the Nature Protection Office and the Planning Department of the canton, the issue of forest nature protection has also been introduced at the levels of communal planning and implementation. On the basis of the Forest Nature Protection Inventory (WNI) the Forest Department has issued a cantonal nature protection strategy for the forest with the Forest Nature Protection Programme. The Upper Council (Grosse Rat) passed a multi-year programme in 1996 and granted the corresponding resources until 2001. The programme has since been extended to the end of 2007. Thanks to a successful collaboration between foresters and owners, 36 per cent of the long-term goals had been realised and contractually assured by the end of 2002.

Abstract:
In the first half of the 19th century scientific philosophers in the United States, such as Emerson and Thoreau, began to pursue the relationship between man and nature. Painters from the Hudson River School discovered the rural spaces to the north of New York and began to celebrate the American landscape in their paintings. In many places at this time garden societies were founded, which generated widespread support for the creation of park enclosures While the first such were cemeteries with the character of parks, housing developments on the peripheries of towns were later set in generous park landscapes. However, the centres of the growing American cities also need green spaces and the so-called «park movement»reached a first high point with New York's Central Park. It was not only an experimental field for modern urban elements, but even today is a force of social cohesion.
