Full textThe purpose of this study is to analyze the contents of one of the manuscripts unearthed at Guodian in 1993. The "Xing zi ming chu" provide an excellent example of the lively debate on human nature held in China during the fourth century B.C. and face the issues on man's natural dispositions with an approach different from those which characterized the work of Mencius and Xunzi. This study focuses on the main concepts of the manuscripts, such as "xing" (natural disposition), "qing" (man's natural capacity to respond to reality), "ren", and faces some of the problems dealing with the translation of some of the most puzzling passages of the text, helping disclosing the "Xing zi ming chu" concept of "dao" and the problems concerning human moral action. This last topic is addressed with an inquiru on the concept of "wei" (false, artificial) and demonstrate that this character is crucial in determining the nature of human moral conduct.

Full textThe topic of this thesis concerns an interpretation of philosophical personalism of William Ernest Hocking, one of the most important American philosopher of 1900, in the light of pedagogical interpretation. The thesis has a highly theoretical aim: to demonstrate that educational mistakes derive, at them roots, from disorders in metaphysical thought. Indeed, according to Hocking education, as an incessant process of humanizing, can be fully justified only within a metaphysical horizon in which we can recognize both the real presence of God into Nature and the concrete possibility for human self to become immortal. Then, the idea of God and the idea of “soul’s immortality” – ideas that are universally indicated by religion – rise into human experience and work as “hermeneutical keys” to understand the process of human growth as a progress in personal humanizing.

Full textStill life is a pictorial genre that born in XVII century and distingushed by the absence of human figure. This absence is not immediatly a total disapparence of human: man is awaited, or he has just left the objects, putting them inside the pictorial space. Tools, food, scraps, everyday places: all they bear the marks of human hands and they are represented defenceless and opaque, in a iper-mimetic expression. But without giving up their emotional and esthetical values. The central part of the research focuses on the relations between the act of describing and the act of telling in painting, starting from some phenomenological considerations and considering some aspects of the concept of fetishism.

Full textThe aim of this work concerns the relation between human rights and natural rights, in order to understand if human rights are those natural rights affirmed in the modern age. First of all, we analyse the contemporary conceptions about human rights nature, especially those which find their meaning from ontological positions. Secondly, we reconstruct the term of this comparison from three perspectives : the idea of natural rights, the concept of natural rights, the theories of natural rights. At last, after the individuation of relevants aspects between both categories, we compare them, highlighting the common points and the differences that separate their path

Full textThis research is part of that area of study that includes the examination report, the complex and controversial comparison between our species and the rest of creation. It moves from the analysis of traditional western thought, that affirms the centrality of man--anthropocentrism. This model serves as a bias against other life forms, that doesn't recognize the value inherent in each, that is the value that goes beyond the benefit that can be drawn from their exploitation, and legitimizes a modus operandi that borders the existing exclusive satisfaction of human interests, which then become substantial repercussions on the environment and non human entities. Faced with such a state, a change in our perception of the natural and proper assessment of the consequences of our actions no longer seems to be a choice, but rather a need, and not just to protect our lives, but the state of the entire planet and future generations. To counter this threat to the world is urgent, undoubtedly, a liberation from the cultural model that reigns unchallenged in our society, and that prevents us from planning our lives in harmony with the natural world. One of our biggest challenges at the dawn of the twenty-first century is therefore to promote a new cultural orientation that can foster a deeper and broader relationship with the natural reality, and give a more concrete image of the animal model in order to generate a sense of communality and affinity of our species with other living creatures.

Full textThe Planet Earth has entered into the Anthropocene Era, scientist J.P.Crutzen said. It’s the Era of human beings, distinguished from the previous ones by the impact that humans are having on the climate and planetary environment. It’s rather clear that human responsibility is strongly implicated in the planetary changes. This responsibility takes at least two main aspects. On the one hand, with respect to those visions of the world, the nature and the environment that have guided the choices, the decisions and the human behavior towards nature and the environment. On the other, regarding the responsibility to which the mankind is called, in working to stop the cycle of exploitation and destruction, and make a real 'change of direction'. The emergence of new and increasingly strong environmental crisis emphasizes the need to focus on the relationships between humans and nature and the values underpinning them. Since the '70s, with the emergence of the environmental crisis, philosophy has increasingly turned its attention towards the relationship ‘humans-nature’. Philosophy reflection is inscribed within the Environmental Ethics perspective that has gradually extended its field of interest, through the metaphor of the "moral circle expansion", widening temporally, including future generations, and spatially, including the world's non-human animals and the environment, understood as ecosphere and biosphere. Several international studies in this field were conducted with different ethnic groups at a national and at cross-national level. No studies were found aiming to investigate immigrants’ world views on nature and environment conducted through a qualitative and/or mixed method approach with key respondents belonging to different ethnic groups, immigrated into a single state, without a comparison among cultures. Inside the Environmental Ethics’ perspective, grounded on the relevance of humans’ values and world vision guiding their behaviours, the research objects aims to explore the relationships between humans, natural environment and non-human animals, people’s worldviews on nature and the importance they confer to it and some dimensions related to environmental values, pro-environmental behavior and environmental problems awareness. This study aims to understand the views of immigrants in Italy, some aspects of their culture in relation to environmental issues and sustainability, through their individual stories, with the intent to contribute to a general understanding of the relationship between human beings and the natural environment, casting a light on some unexplored aspects of the immigrant population in Italy, with regard to such a relationship. With the above aims in mind, the attention was focused on people from different ethnic groups immigrated to Italy and the purposefully selected group of respondents was sought gathering people from Immigrants Associations in two areas: Milano, Parma and their provinces, where these associations are widespread and usually promote integration through their activities and initiatives. Foreign adults, from different ethnic groups, immigrated to Italy as first generation were selected as key respondents. Considering that the study aim is not to obtain quantitative results on a large scale but it is an in depth analysis of individual thinking, a mixed methods approach, composed by a quantitative tool consisting of a structured interview with multiple choice answers on Likert scale along with a qualitative interview, was elaborated.

Full textAfter the outbreak of the food price crisis in 2007 – 2008 a new practice, known as land grabbing, has emerged on the international scene. The race to land is generally understood as the phenomenon of large-scale investments in land by foreign investors, which include both States and private companies, especially in developing countries. Driven by the necessity to attract foreign capital and finance infrastructure projects, developing countries have implemented favorable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policies, thus allowing the purchase or lease of fertile land lots, for rather meager rental prices and long terms (usually ranging from thirty to ninety-nine years) . Formally, these investments are directed towards the production of raw materials, necessary to address food and energy requirements, in particular for those countries which are net importers of agricultural products. The host State may well then decide to conclude lawful deals with the investors towards this aim. Prima facie, therefore, the conclusion of investment contracts in land apparently reflects the host country’s exercise of permanent sovereignty over its natural resources, which has the full right to regulate the exploitation thereof. Nevertheless the analysis of the phenomenon of land grabbing raises some doubts in relation to the compatibility of this practice with current international law norms. Such investments potentially carry a number of high risks to the population of the host country, in particular in terms of access to land and food supply. It is likely, in fact, that on the land subject to a given investment, there may already exist crops or herds of rural communities, who use the land by virtue of custom or usage rights, usually granted a lower level of protection if compared to the formal titles of ownership, rare at best in most developing countries. In some regions of the world, the holders are therefore particularly vulnerable to displacement, given the difficulty to exercise their uncertain land rights and to obtain, as a result, adequate judicial protection. Equally worrying, environmentally, is the implementation of investment contracts aimed at exploiting land to farm biofuels or realize large plots of monoculture, thus reducing the possibility to keep adequate land biological diversity. After the analysis of the juridical significance of land grabbing and the identification of its autonomous legal characterization, the thesis examines the question of the legitimacy of the race to land with regards to the exercise of permanent sovereignty over natural resources by the host country, especially in those cases where the alienation of land generates considerably negative externalities on the local population: sovereignty cannot, in fact, be exercised without due regard to the specific obligations incumbent upon States under international law, related, in particular, to the protection of human rights and the environment.
