Abstract:
In the monograph, based on the authors' long—term observations in the Yugansky Nature Reserve (KhMAO — Yugra), as well as open literature data, the dynamics of the number of large ungulates living together: forest reindeer, elk, and also the wolf predator associated with them are analyzed. The authors used traditional statistical and dynamic methods of analysis, as well as some ecological indices: compensation coefficient and habitat fidelity indices. Landscape features of the long—term course of abundance and its cycles in deer and wolf, synchronization of dynamics in the predator-prey system

Full text
Abstract:
Community structure refers to the taxonomic types of microbes and their relative abundance in an environment. This chapter focuses on bacteria with a few words about fungi; protists and viruses are discussed in Chapters 9 and 10. Traditional methods for identifying microbes rely on biochemical testing of phenotype observable in the laboratory. Even for cultivated microbes and larger organisms, the traditional, phenotype approach has been replaced by comparing sequences of specific genes, those for 16S rRNA (archaea and bacteria) or 18S rRNA (microbial eukaryotes). Cultivation-independent appro

Managing Resource Abundance and Wealth: The Norwegian Experience describes how Norway has created new institutions and policies, and employed good macroeconomic management techniques, administrative systems, local content, and regulatory frameworks to avoid the Resource Curse and Dutch Disease. Lessons from the Norwegian experience can be extended to other petroleum-producing countries. These lessons are derived from two very different sources: (1) the broader—if still underdeveloped—social science literature that examines the Paradox of Plenty in its disparate forms; and (2) Norway’s experien

Abstract:
Black-footed ferrets were reduced to a remnant population of 10 in 1985 due to diseases (plague, canine distemper), but successful captive breeding and releases have improved the prospects for ferret recovery. Comparisons between black-footed ferrets and Siberian polecats, close relatives that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, allow the following evolutionary speculation. Predation on ferrets and polecats tends to narrow their niches and promote specialization due to requirements for escape habitats. In Asia, that influence is countered by the larger and more diverse area of steppe
