Despite the real societal challenge posed by their important potential of destruction, the infrequent moderate and large earthquakes in tectonically-stable continental regions (SCR) have causes that are not well understood yet. Nevertheless, recent studies suggest that large earthquakes in SCR can be explained by transient disturbances of local crustal stress or fault strength because the tectonic loading on faults is very slow. In this paper, we assert that this new hypothesis is well supported by the observation that many moderate MW 5.5-6.0 SCR earthquakes are shallower than similar events

The construction of a roads network consumes high amounts of materials. The road materials are required to fulfill high standards like bearing capacity and low settlement susceptibility due to cyclic loading. Therefore, crushed aggregates are the primary subbase construction material. The material-intensity of road engineering leads to depletion of natural resources, and to avoid it, the alternative recycled materials are required to be applied to achieve sustainable development. Abstract:
The article presents the results of large-scale studies of the content and distribution of natural and man-made radionuclides in the sediments of the rivers flowing into the Dnieper-Bug estuary. The article also presents the results of the granulometric analysis of the surveyed water bodies. The data about natural radioactive elements in the sediments rivers flowing into the Dnieper-Bug estuary obtained in this research are demonstrated moderate specific activity, which, however, clearly correlates with the granulometric composition of sediments. The 137Cs determined by us is contained in the

Abstract:
Emissions reduction through exhaust aftertreatment is becoming more common. It is likely to play an important role in meeting new emissions regulations in the future. Currently, the predominate aftertreatment technology for NOX reduction in lean burn natural gas engines appears to be selective catalytic reduction (SCR). In SCR, a reducing agent is injected into the exhaust upstream of a catalyst. Supplying the optimal quantity of reagent is critical to effective application of SCR. If too little reagent is supplied then the NOx reduction efficiency may be too low. If too much reagent is provid

Barton. L51695 Development of Inspection Vehicle to Detect SCC in Natural Gas Lines. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 1993. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010627.

Abstract:
Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) poses a serious threat to aging underground cathodically protected gas pipelines. As coatings deteriorate, conditions suitable for corrosion and SCC become more common. There have been many ruptures throughout the world attributed to SCC. One of the most important steps in combating failure by SCC is regular, reliable and cost effective monitoring of pipelines. Current methods available (including hydrotesting and magnetic particle testing) are either expensive, time consuming, or not entirely reliable. Regular testing of pipelines and the detailed study of the

The Department of the Army (DA) manages over twelve million acres of land for military use, and almost 138,000 buildings. Military installations and other US DoD operations contain architectural structures and civil infrastructure that require continuous improvements to resiliency. This includes resiliency in the form of protection against both natural and man-made disasters. This document seeks to identify multiple risks to infrastructure and people and encourages open dialogue for creative solutions. Designers and engineers as well as other disciplines can work together to achieve higher res
