The very limited capacity of short-term or working memory is one of the most prominent features of human cognition. Most studies have stressed delimiting the upper bounds of this memory in memorization tasks rather than the performance of everyday tasks. We designed a series of experiments to test the use of short-term memory in the course of a natural hand-eye task where subjects have the freedom to choose their own task parameters. In this case subjects choose not to operate at the maximum capacity of short-term memory but instead seek to minimize its use. In particular, reducing the instant

Abstract Natural killer (NK) cells, classically considered to be part of the innate immune system, are specialized for rapid responses that protect the host against pathogens and eliminate malignant cells. These functional responses are multi-faceted, and include not only direct target cell killing, but also production of cytokines and chemokines, proliferative expansion, and cross-talk with various immune cells to help orchestrate cellular immunity. NK cell recognition of a target cell is controlled by the integration of signals from germline-DNA encoded activating, inhibitory, and cytokine r

A traversable wormhole solution of general scalar–tensor field equations is presented. We have shown, after a numerical analysis for the behavior of the scalar field of Brans–Dicke theory, that the solution is completely singularity-free. Furthermore, the analysis of more general scalar field dependent coupling constants indicates that the gravitational memory phenomenon may play an important role for the fate of natural wormholes.

Perceived object colour tends to stay constant under changes in illumination. This phenomenon is called colour constancy. Colour constancy is an essential component of colour perception and is typically studied in the laboratory via asymmetric colour matching experiments, in which the observer views two colours under two different illuminations side by side and makes matches between them. This situation is unlike colour constancy in the real world, which must typically involve a comparison between the colour one views and the colour one remembers - in other words, colour memory must be require

While works in literature are ripe with descriptions of attempts at producing viable ECA architectures, few authors have addressed the role of episodic memory models in conversational agents. This form of memory, which provides a sense of autobiographic record-keeping in humans, has only recently been peripherally integrated into dialog management tools for ECAs. Two applications of a binary tree data type based on a simple pairing function (a bijection between natural numbers and pairs of natural numbers) are explored. Second, using this "canonical" representation as a base type, algorithms for encoding and decoding additional isomorphic data types of other mathematical constructs (sets, sequences, etc.) are also developed. As sessile organisms, plants had to develop various biochemical and physiological mechanisms to respond and adapt to abiotic stress conditions such as salt and drought and thus acquire stress tolerance. A particular interesting mechanism is the so called “priming effect”: an application of a mild short stress to plants at an early stage of development appears to enable them to cope better when stressed again at mature stage. However, the molecular effects of salt priming have not been systematically quantified and as a consequence the molecular basis of priming remains unknown. In this study a
