Abstract:
Tularemia, caused by the gram-negative coccobacillus Francisella tularensis, is an extremely infectious bacterial zoonosis. Symptoms depend on site of exposure; they can be nonspecific and may include fever, lymphadenopathy, ulcer or papule, and nausea/vomiting. Natural transmission occurs via small mammals, such as rabbits, or arthropod bites. IV or IM antibiotics are preferred over oral forms. Supportive care is also critical; some patients may require respiratory support. If used as a biological weapon, aerosolized F. tularensis would be the most likely route of transmission. This article focuses on the catastrophe of September 11, 2001; its memory sustained through oral history and captured in narratives. The purpose of this article is twofold: to explore the natural capacity of oral history, an ethical practice, for supporting the active process of historical remembrance even in its most nascent stages; and to use the September 11, 2001, Oral History Narrative and Memory Project as a means of defining a possible approach to documenting historical trauma through oral history. Both oral history and what has come to be known as “reminiscence work” acquired a public profile around the same time, during the 1970s and early 1980s, in Europe and North America. This article focuses on the importance of remembrance in later life. For oral history, remembering is seen as a means to an end. By contrast, reminiscence work fixes on the process, the social interactions and changes brought about by engaging in remembering. Reminiscence work continues to be discovered and applied by practitioners and researchers without much awareness of its history and origins. A case study from

The Norse discovery and settlement of Iceland in the late ninth century AD offers a test case for the study of human impacts on previously unoccupied landscapes and the formation of new societies under challenging conditions. The Norse Viking Age settlement of the island serves as a cautionary tale about the anthropogenic destruction of fragile environments, while simultaneously providing lessons about the strategic management of marginal ecosystems and nuanced examples of societal evolution and secondary state formation. Archaeological investigation of these processes is complemented by oral

After nearly a decade of scholars trying to define digital work, this book makes the case for a need instead to understand the history of technology’s relationship with historical studies. It does so through a series of case studies that show some of the many ways that technology and historians have come together around the world and over the decades. Often left out of the historiography, the digital age has been transformative for historians, touching on research agendas, approaches to teaching and learning, scholarly communication, and the nature of the archive itself. This book offers a new, groundbreaking approach to the nature of the early discourses of the Buddha, the most foundational scriptures of Buddhist religion. While commonly the early discourses are considered to be attempts to preserve the Buddha’s teachings, this book demonstrates that these texts are full of creativity, aiming to beautify the image of the wondrous Buddha, to tell good stories, to stir the imagination, and to move people emotionally. While the texts surely care for the early teachings and for the Buddha’s philosophy or his guidelines for meditation, and while at times they may

Abstract:
This thematically arranged book examines the evolution of rail transport and a number of railway workforces across Europe in the modern era, from around 1880 to 2023. Each chapter explores how, within the context of a social railway, rail workers developed distinct national and international perspectives on the nature of their work and their roles in societies and states. David Welsh convincingly argues that workers formed a raft of entirely new and enduring organisations such as trade unions that, in turn, became ramparts of hope. Welsh goes on to consider how the insurgent character of these
