Abstract:
Northern Albania, the "land of the pomegranates", is a region where culture and nature are intimately bound up. This hypertext is proposed as an innovative tool of scientific divulgation for the valorisation of this precious and little-known territory, while also lending itself to various types of exploitation for tourist purposes. The itineraries, which radiate outwards from the city of Scutari, are presented through synthetic factsheets, composed using a simple and immediate language, and deriving from direct observation. Precisely because of its multiple functions, the hypertext has been organised at a number of levels: from simple description to historic and literary references or the reports of travellers, through to the detailing of the tourist resources available.

Baker, Maria, Eva Ramirez-Llodra, and Paul Tyler, eds. Natural Capital and Exploitation of the Deep Ocean. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198841654.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The deep ocean is, by far, the planet’s largest biome and holds a wealth of potential natural assets. Most of the ocean lies beyond national jurisdiction and hence is the responsibility of us all. Human exploitation of the deep ocean is rapidly increasing, becoming more visible to many through the popular media. The scientific literature of deep-sea exploitation and its actual and potential effects has also rapidly expanded as a direct function of this increased national and global interest in deep-sea resources, both biological (e.g. fisheries, genetic resources) and non-biological (e.g. minerals, oil, gas, methane hydrate). At the same time there is a growing interest in deep-sea contamination (including plastics), with many such studies featured in high-profile scientific journals and covered by global media outlets. Finally, climate change is affecting even the deepest regions of our oceans and is a major priority for the international scientific and political agendas. However, there is currently no comprehensive integration of information about resource extraction, pollution and effects of climate change and these topics are only superficially covered in classic textbooks on deep-sea biology. The human race is at a pivotal point in potentially benefitting from the deep ocean’s natural resources and this concise and accessible work provides an account of past explorations and exploitations of the deep ocean, a present understanding of its natural capital and how this may be exploited sustainably for the benefit of humankind whilst maintaining its ecological integrity. The book gives a comprehensive account of geological and physical processes, ecology and biology, exploitation, management, and conservation.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role that human rights law can play in the governance of natural resources. Using the compass of the right to development, it explores how human rights law supports the emergence of a right to participation, to consent, and to benefit from the exploitation of natural resources. The aim is to analyse how the right to development, despite its flaws and controversies, has become an important anchor to support the right of local communities to the governance over the natural resources located on their territories. It discusses the emergence of the rights to participation and consent as well as to benefit from natural resources exploitation. It also examines the potential connection between human rights law and taxation, rent, allocation, and use of revenues emerging from natural resources exploitation.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the evolution of natural resources jurisdictional litigation from Confederation in 1867 until the present. Issues of resource ownership, legislative control, and environmental protection are all explored. In the years immediately following Confederation, the principal focus was establishing resource ownership for all provinces. Once that was established through the Natural Resources Transfer Agreements, legislative jurisdiction over resources became the issue. The caselaw from this period resulted in the resource amendment, which was the only change to the federal-provincial division of powers constitutionally entrenched by the Constitution Act, 1982. Issues of ownership and legislative jurisdiction were settled just in time for the courts to turn their focus to environmental protection. The author demonstrates the way in which litigation and negotiation through the years has led to the current conflict between environmental and resource protection, and the potential profits available in the fossil fuel sector, with special emphasis on pipelines.
