Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between the "constructed" (built) environment and the natural environment. What defines such a relationship and can the relationship be formulated? Surely a successful union is much like a marriage whereby one part is better than either of the individual parts. This thesis is an exploration into that relationship. It explores the nature of the built environment through the construction in the natural environment. In addition, it explores the possibility of utilizing a set of guidelines to assist the designer in the creation of such a relationship. The pro

Abstract:
Water is crucial for all life on this planet. Despite this much of our aquatic environments have become affected by pollution and nutrient-loading. One large contributor to the problem is privately owned sewers, also called on-site sewage systems. Currently there are approximately 691 000 on-site sewage systems in Sweden, which carry the infamous distinction of representing one of the largest point sources of phosphorus and nitrogen. Furthermore roughly 180 000 of these sewers are by legal definitions unlawful, because of substandard wastewater treatment. The purpose of this study was to inves

Observations that colloidal natural organic matter (NOM) enhances the migration of pollutants in groundwater have focused scientific interest towards the transport of NOM and its adsorptive properties. A small-scale tracer test was performed at a field site in Georgetown, SC, to investigate the movement of NOM under field conditions. Special emphasis was given to the hydrological heterogeneity of the site, with the idea that the flow field must be accurately known in order to distinguish adsorption from the effects of the hydrological processes. 308 slug tests were performed to characterize the

<p>Molecular chaperones help many proteins in the cell reach their native conformation. The mechanism with which they do this has been studied extensively, but has not been entirely elucidated. This work is a continuation of the study done by Laila Villebeck et al. (2007) on the conformational rearrangements in the eukaryotic protein actin in interaction with the eukaryotic chaperone TRiC. In this study the intentions were to analyze the protein MreB, a prokaryotic homologue to actin, when interacting with the prokaryotic chaperone GroEL. The purpose was to investigate if the mechanisms of Gro

The work of this thesis aims to develop of a new workflow to predict potential Sites of Cleavage (SoCs) in new candidate peptide drugs. The main goal of this workflow is to understand the protease specificity rules from data coming from different sources and with no limitations on peptides structure. To complete this goal, we implemented a new algorithm to store the information from experimental and external sources in a chemically aware database WebMetabase. This database can be further enriched with new data without limitations. Moreover, we were able to process information about cyclic pept
