Abstract:
Tourist attractions are vital sub-elements in the tourism system. Despite drawing considerable attention in the tourism literature, most studies suffer from a lack of in-depth analysis of the theoretical foundation. This research aims to analyze the temporal nature of tourist attraction, thereby linking the cognitive and organizational perspective of tourist attraction classification by its temporal dimension. From the organizational perspective of tourist attraction classification, a further purpose is to classify tourist attractions regarding their temporal dimension. This paper shows the organizational influence of time regarding when and how long an attraction occurs. The cognitive and organizational perspective typologies of tourist attractions are linked by a common unit of measurement: time. With regard to their temporal dimension, tourist attractions are classified as STA - Stationary attraction and SEA - Seasonal attractions. This study contributes to the literature by providing an insight into the temporal dimension of tourist attractions and the understanding of the cognitive and organizational perspective and their interconnection within tourist attraction typology. The defined framework can be applied in the comparison and evaluation of tourist attractions providing the basis for further discussion on the nature of tourist attractions.

Abstract:
Tourism in Finland is chiefly oriented towards nature, but culture has an important role to play as well. Almost every cultural attraction with more than 100,000 visitors per year is situated in the major cities. Typically, the most popular cultural attraction in the cities is a church or a museum. In the rural areas, almost the only significant attractions are short-term festivals. It seems that successful cultural attractions do require a large population catchment surrounding them. Normally, local residents also enjoy culture attractions. The paper considers the relationship between cultural attractions and the location.

Abstract:
This study empirically examines the spatial interdependency of attractions, using a unique database of 75 important attractions in Guangdong (GD) province, China and spatial econometric models. According to the estimation results, compatible effects apply to the samples in GD overall and in eastern GD, while competitive effects apply to the samples in northern GD. To analyze further, this study finds attraction theme matters to the nature of spatial interdependency. There are competitive effects among natural attraction (NA) and man-made attraction (MA) and insignificant compatible effects among cultural attractions. The competitive effects among NAs have a root in the competition for tourists’ time budget, and competitive effects among MAs are related to product homogeneity, resulting from the ubiquitous product imitation in MAs in China. This study concludes that to distinctly diversify attraction theme is a critical way to generate a positive spatial interdependency among attractions within a certain geographic area.

Abstract:
The essay is devoted to the application of the concept of the Montage of Attractions in Russian cinema in different time periods. The relevance of the essay is determined by the need to explore the influence of the Russian avant-garde on the world artistic process. In the opinion of the author, the key concept of the avant-garde film thought of the 1920s, the theory of the Montage of Attractions, deserves a separate independent study. Considering "the Montage of Attractions" from a historical perspective, the author analyzes various trends in Soviet cinema. Starting from the basic idea of Sergei Eisenstein, the author pays special attention to the use of the Montage of Attractions in the work of Mikhail Romm and Aleksandr Mitta. The article looks at the main features of the actualization of the Montage of Attractions at different stages of the development of Russian cinema. In the 1920s, the attraction was perceived as an aggressive element exposing the viewer to ideological influence. In the 1960s, the Montage of Attractions meant the reception of a contrast connection between the semantic parts of the film. In the 1970s, the principle of attraction was the basis for the plotting of genre films. Summarizing the information obtained, the author comes to the conclusion about the universal nature of the theory of the Montage of Attractions and introduces her definition of an attraction. The essay also lists such basic aspects of the attraction as conflict, suggestiveness, universality.

Abstract:
Icelandic tourism development has undergone major changes over the past decade, tourism has increased rapidly, which has lead to the tourism industry being behind in developments on several levels, including tourist’s safety. It appears that both traffic incidents and accidents in the nature increases as the tourists increase. Reynisfjara a lava beach, is one of the most popular nature attractions and also were accidents occure among tourists. In this study organizations and operators connected to tourism in Iceland are examined on how they manage and plan regarding risks in natural attractions. The survey is based on interviews with nine organizations and tourism stakeholders, including the Icelandic Tourist Board, the police, landowner, rescue team and a case study on Reynisfjara where factors affecting tourists safety are defined. The theoretical approach includes planning, risk management and cooperation. The results show that the most common accidents among tourists are traffic accidents. Thus the planning of physical infrastructure is an influencing factor. Another influencing factor is the tourists' tendency and recklessness against the risks. It appears that the tourists' safety in natural attractions are influenced by the extent to which those involved are planning for risk management. A systematic approach to planning is lacking and safety measures are mainly done when an accident has already occurred. Cooperation on the allocation of resources and legislation between the authorities and operators in the tourism industry, proves to be crucial to increase safety. The study shows that the players involved are not a unified group regarding planning, risk management and responsibilities. Risk management in Iceland today consists of a multi-operator system, which has led to fragmented responsibilities. Responsibility for tourists' safety lies in their own hands.

Abstract:
Sweden is a country with a lot of tourism that is dependent on nature as a touristic resource. Nature itself is a complex concept with different interpretations. In this thesis, the social construction of the Swedish nature as a touristic attraction is scrutinized. A total of 671 visual images with belonging descriptive texts has been collected from an online image bank where information about Sweden is available for foreign marketers. The material was analysed in order to answer questions about how the Swedish nature and the touristic approach to it are presented, how nature features are assigned to it and how the relationship between nature and humans is presented. The composition and portraiture of the images and prominent themes and patterns in the textual descriptions have been identified as well. The theoretical framework is based on discourse theory, while the methodological framework is based on inspiration from both discourse analysis and content analysis. The result revealed that Swedish nature is presented as part of the rural Sweden with mountains, forests and littoral areas as the main elements. Swedish nature is foremost portrayed as wild and authentic, but also as sublime and pristine to a lesser extent. It is also portrayed as a place for touristic activities with a focus on the outdoors and physical activity. The relation between nature and humans differ, but the Swedish people are portrayed as more connected to nature than tourists

Abstract:
As the world economies have shifted from being production-based to knowledge-based each country has to develop their technologically literate workforces to stay globally competitive. A low interest in the engineering profession among younger students has caused insufficient support for the workforce demand. Marketers must adapt their efforts to recruiting young people even before they attend college as this focused cohort tend to make career plans early. As today’s teenagers have been using digital media constantly since they grew up, they are frequently called digital natives. They perceive social networking sites, where they can communicate with friends and exchange information with people all over the world, as essential parts of their lives. This makes social networks great promotional tools, as digital natives share experiences and opinions about products and services online, creating a kind of electronic word-of-mouth, which is characterized as the future of social media marketing communications. To investigate in what ways digital natives’ absorb online marketing, the purpose of this research is to provide a better understanding of how technical high schools can address digital marketing activities to attract more students. The thesis was compiled after inquiries from the Swedish nationwide senior high school Teknikcollege, and it is conducted as a quantitative explanatory study, where primary data was collected through an online questionnaire distributed among junior high school students in Luleå and Överkalix. A total of 239 answers were collected and 182 answers were analyzed using statistical techniques. The results suggested that senior high schools should focus their online marketing efforts on visual social media channels, and that people based trust is the most important factor when using the peripheral route to persuade digital natives.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the relationship between the parser and the grammar in Native Speakers (NSs) and Heritage Speakers (HSs) of Greek by examining the mechanisms underpinning the illusory licensing of gender agreement violations: errors occurring when an intervening phrase (attractor) mismatches the gender cues of the head noun, a phenomenon which is usually called (gender) agreement attraction. In this work, I show that both NSs and HSs are prone to gender agreement attraction errors in the nominal domain of Greek, as their reaction time patterns and (speeded or scaled) judgements revealed. At the same time, both groups showed the same overgeneralization patterns of the masculine value in agreement errors with animate nouns in their oral narrations, and of the neuter value with inanimate nouns in their oral narrations and their online speeded judgements. Taken together, these results suggest that NSs and HSs are prone to gender agreement attraction in Greek and that both groups employ retrieval cues similarly showing similar attraction patterns. However, HSs differ from NSs in the processing of gender agreement per se, particularly with feminine head nouns (marked gender value) on object-clitics, suggesting that markedness as well as agreement at Interfaces influence HSs’ performance. Finally, when errors occur, both groups follow the same overegeneralization patterns.

Full text
Abstract:
Employer branding is a strategic activity that has grown in popularity over the past two decades. Much progress has been made in investigating aspects of employer branding; however, many facets of the process, as it has been conceptualised in the research literature, remain empirically unexplored. The aim of this thesis is to get a deeper, more grounded understanding of employer branding based on an investigation of employer branding processes in practice. Four papers are presented, each providing a new perspective. In the first paper, industry experts??? perceptions of the characteristics of successful and unsuccessful employer brands are used to arrive at a typology of employer branding success. The typology is managerially relevant, providing a means by which firms may assess their employer branding success qualitatively and quantitatively (based on metrics commonly used in practice). Further, theoretical contributions are made by establishing employer branding as a context distinct from corporate and consumer branding, and by providing a basis for assessing variance between employer brands. In the second and third papers, the mechanisms that shape and perpetuate employer brands are explored. Individual (employee) and firm-related mechanisms drawn from the literature are empirically validated in the second paper using qualitative within-case analysis of four employer brands. The firms are from a broad range of industries and are characteristically successful (a pharmaceuticals and a financial services firm) and unsuccessful (a transport firm and a semi-government public utility). The case analysis results in the discovery of additional mechanisms relating to industry-level factors, not previously documented. These findings are built on in the third paper, where cross-case analysis of the same firms is used to establish a set of conditions that support or erode employer branding success. Importantly, theory perspectives outside the traditional domain of marketing (i.e., human resources, organisational behaviour and strategy) are shown to be critical for understanding the process in practice. A taxonomy of generic market segmentation types is used in the fourth paper to investigate the application of market segmentation to employer branding. Market segmentation is shown to provide a useful link between employer branding and broader strategic planning.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine if natural elements would act as identity markers and affect workplace attitudes. Specifically, the study hypothesized that a workplace environment that possessed natural elements such as natural lighting, potted plants and pictures of nature, would cause job applicants to report higher levels of organizational attractiveness and job pursuit intentions after a workplace tour of the organization. It was also hypothesized that enjoyment of nature would moderate the effect of the natural elements on these workplace attitudes. When tested with a 2x2 MANOVA, one hypothesis was supported and showed natural elements in the workplace can affect a job applicant’s organizational attraction. Implications, limitations and future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter presents a wildlife tourism destination attractiveness and sustainability framework based on relevant destination attractiveness attributes and sustainability indicators. The framework was tested at Lake Nakuru National Park (LNNP) in Kenya. Attractiveness was categorized into four dimensions that included wildlife resources, park accessibility, cost of attractions and park image. As the findings indicated, there was direct positive effect of all four dimensions. A relatively low effect was recorded with regard to park image, which is likely to have contributed to low satisfaction experience, future behavioural intentions and park ecological value. In addition, among the repeat visitors' responses, the majority agreed there was increased wildlife disappearance, increased difficulty in sightseeing key wildlife attractions at LNNP, invasive new species within the park, changes in wildlife grazing grounds, infrastructure damage and increased visibility of litter inside the park.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter aims to (i) determine visitor crowding standards that help decision takers to improve the visitor experience and build an accurate tourism carrying capacity; and (ii) explore a possible relationship among crowding perception, origin of visitors and willingness to pay (WTP). The first section analyses the concepts of indicators and standards as well as the importance of crowding perception as a key indicator to assess the quality of the visitor experience. Relationships between the origin of visitors, crowding and WTP to access nature-based attractions are also examined theoretically in this section. The second section describes the importance of cenotes as a main water-based tourist attraction at the Yucatán Peninsula. The third section presents the methodology; quantitative questionnaires based on normative theory were used in a visual approach focusing on Dzombakal cenote. Results outlined in the fourth section show that crowding is a good indicator to evaluate the visitor experience in water-based settings like cenotes. However, as discussed and concluded in the final section, due to significant differences between the crowding standards of local and international visitors, the symbolic value of the cenotes should be considered if a better visitor experience management is to be met.

Abstract:
Abstract The study presented in this chapter examines visitor experiences at elephant sanctuaries in an era where animal ethics has taken centre stage. The study unpacks the moral tensions surrounding such attractions through analysis of social media comments by visitors. Based on this study a framework is proposed that encompasses three moral tensions that relate to animal welfare and the operations of animal sanctuaries, from the viewpoint of the visitor experience: (i) freedom-captivity; (ii) distance-interaction; and (iii) natural-staged. The chapter draws on two case studies: the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) in Kenya, and the Elephant Nature Park (ENP) in Thailand.

Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter the concept of identity is discussed in relation to niche events as expressed through images produced and circulated in social media. Since niche events focus on special interests and activities for a limited number of people and attract participants from afar who share this interest, these types of events also influence the identities of the places that are represented in relation to them. By circulating images online - the people, attractions, landscapes and cultural practices of places connected to specific hashtags on social media - places are co-constructed and materialized in the minds of visitors, businesses and other stakeholders in an ongoing flow of communication. The study shows that social media posts related to Landsmót (the National Championship of the Icelandic horse) represent both the event and Iceland as a destination by stressing national pride and an Icelandic identity strongly connected to the rural landscape, to outdoor activities, to harsh nature and to skilled, strong and independent men and women who create their identities in relation to their horses.

Abstract:
Educational trails are a traditional tool to bring local attractions closer to the visitor of the area. However, educational trails are currently changing concepts. The classic model of whiteboards with text and images no longer works - visitors do not want to read long texts. They require interactivity and a sophisticated visual experience. With the development of modern communication technologies, there is an opportunity to meet these expectations by connecting educational content with a virtual environment. The article aims to present several different types of virtual nature trails in Czechia and assess the strengths and weaknesses of their implementation from visitors' perspective. The input data are data from evaluation questionnaires from guided excursions, a substantial part of which were these educational trails; the method used is content analysis. The main findings include that visitors accept these new forms of nature trails mostly positively. Negative reactions were more of a practical nature when something did not work as it should. In addition, creating and maintaining a virtual nature trail can be significantly cheaper than its physical form, which is an advantage in rural regions where local governments do not have large budgets. The author of this article is also a co-author of one of the assessed paths; therefore, practical advice regarding the implementation of virtual educational paths is also discussed.

Abstract:
During the last decades, extensive research has been conducted on structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques based on the changes of coupled structure properties, e.g. piezoelectric impedance, which enjoys high detection sensitivity due to high-frequency actuation/sensing nature. However, the actual identification of fault locations and severities remains to be challenging owing to underdetermined underling mathematics. Recently, compressed sensing, a signal processing technique originally developed to recover signals from the compressed measurements, has shown its potential to address some of the mathematical challenges encountered in SHM practices. In this research, we morph the impedance-based SHM problem into a compressed sensing scheme such that the impedance change are used as measured data to reconstruct the damage locations and severities through convex optimization, e.g. l1 optimization. The proposed approach offers practical attractions of only requiring a small number of measurements and a short amount of computational time, and the results are promising if certain properties are fulfilled. Finally, the proposed approach is applied to and validated by several test problems.

Full text
Abstract:
Many wildlife management situations require the disposal of animal carcasses. These can include the lethal removal of wildlife to resolve damage or conflicts, as well as clean-up after mortalities caused by vehicle collisions, disease, oil spills or other natural disasters. Carcasses must be disposed of properly to protect public sensitivities, the environment, and public health. Improper disposal of carcasses can result in public outrage, site contamination, injury to animals and people, and the attraction of other animals that may lead to wildlife damage issues. Concern over ground water contamination and disease transmission from improper carcass disposal has resulted in increased regulation. Successful carcass disposal programs are cost-effective, environmentally sound, and protective of public health. In addition, disposal practices must demonstrate sensitivity to public perception while adhering to state and local guidelines. This publication discusses the range of options available for the responsible disposal of animal carcasses.
