The COVID19 pandemic poses an exceptional challenge for humanity. Because public behavior is key to curbing the pandemic at an early stage, it is important for social psychological researchers to use their knowledge to promote behaviors that help manage the crisis. Here, we identify human values as particularly important in driving both behavioral compliance to government guidelines and promoting prosocial behaviors to alleviate the strains arising from a prolonged pandemic. The individual does not “keep” these languages and cultures separate from each other, but forms a communicative competence based on all knowledge and all language experience, where languages are interconnected and interact with one another. The introduction of rural preschools, locally known as crèches, provides one example of such change challenging local socialization agents. Abstract:
AbstractSince the Oregon Death with Dignity Act was adopted in 1997, an increasing number of people have requested euthanasia, showing that life has become unbearable for them. However, a person who expresses the wish to die by euthanasia is not saying that he/she prefers death to life, but rather that death seems preferable to life under the actual circumstances. In order to respond to a person’s suffering, we need to understand the nature of that suffering, as they experience it. Suffering may be physical, psychological, relational, spiritual, or existential; frequently these different aspects overlap or intermingle, particularly in a serious illness. Euthanasia does not improve life—it ends it by giving death. But when the response involves listening and accepting the person in his/her present situation, it becomes possible to work together with the person to see what can be done to help reduce suffering. We can look for means of relief for the person’s individual, unique suffering, in partnership with the patient and his/her family and friends, using the resources of both medical knowledge and our shared humanity. The willingness to walk on this shared path with the sick person is in itself an affirmation of his/her human dignity.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the developments in yoga psychology. While the Yoga Sūtras are pre-eminently psychological in nature, the treatment of psychological phenomena has been attempted from the perspective of self-realization. The functional mind (citta) comprises not only cognitive, affective and conative processes (Karmas), but also contains instinctual tendencies (vāsanās) that are inherited from previous lives as subliminal-impressions (samskāras). These vāsanās and samskāras tend to colour our cognitions and predispose us to behave in certain ways. The chapter critically analyses these key concepts and situates them in contemporary psychological context. A brief description of the Jaina and Buddhist yoga systems and other varieties of yoga that are prevalent today is also provided. Finally, a review of the empirical studies is presented that showcases the mundane and incorporeal aspects of yoga psychology and outlines several issues for further investigation.

Abstract:
Forensic psychiatry involves the role of the psychiatrist as expert witness, or court-mandated evaluations of patients’ mental states or witnesses’ credibility. Forensic psychiatry also deals with questions of responsibility, treatment of psychiatrically ill offenders, and prediction of dangerousness of delinquents. Aggressive delinquency of patients with psychosis is about five times higher compared to the general population. Conversely, the risk for individuals with schizophrenia to become a victim of violence is several times higher than that of committing a violent crime. While aggression is part of human nature, mediated, in part, by the interaction of genes and childhood experiences, there is no reason for exculpation of delinquency based on the fact that criminal behaviour has also a biological dimension. Criminal offences often concern decisions based on one’s life-history strategy or evolved psychological mechanisms gone awry, including partner violence (homicide, sexual assault, stalking), paraphilic disorders, and infanticide.

Abstract:
This chapter contributes to theoretical debates in the study of the economics of cultural heritage conservation. In particular, it deals with the economic analysis, the effects, and the normative aspects of decision making on the preservation of artistic and historical heritage. The different concepts of conservation (re-use, restoration, preservation) are discussed from an economic and historical perspective. A formalised model is presented to ground the analysis. The most relevant dilemmas characterising the issue are studied on this basis. The impossibility of deriving optimum solutions from the market is argued together with the arbitrariness of all non-market decisions on this subject. The rejection of the current definition of conservation as “preservation” on economic grounds is therefore suggested, given its pure ideological nature.
