Sound and silence share the same psychoacoustical nature. Nevertheless, we normally analyze them as opposite and contrary phenomena. Yet both sound and silence require temporality, linear perception and contrast in order to be cognitively distinguished and understood. Contrast, as the essence of silence, also gives a greater variation of ways to describe sound, taking silence to be “no-sound” and thus permitting the existence of partial silence. This paper first discusses the nature of textual silence and then proposes a typology of textual silences associated with written scientific discourse. The output is a single metric, which directly quantifies the alertness level of the conductor.
