This dissertation examines the commercially released nature records that were produced by naturalists, scientists, recording engineers, teachers, musicians, and hobbyists from the 1890s through the 1970s. Though some of the general concepts about natural sound have remained remarkably consistent over time, their specific definitions and implementations are marked by moments of contestation and change. The poems in Carved take the reader on a journey of self-discovery and explore the inequalities of human relationships: between being silent and the discovery of one's voice. The collection also addresses humanity's destructive imprint and the resiliency of nature in reclaiming what humanity sought to exploit and conquer. Since the advent of the environmental crisis, some writers have raised concerns with the moral influence of Christian scripture and interpretive traditions, such as the medieval book of nature, a hermeneutic in which nature and scripture are "read" in reference to one another. Quantum chemical studies on lowcoordinated group 14-16 compounds have been performed. This thesis focuses particularly on silenes influenced by reverse Siδ-=Cδ+ bond polarization. Hypercoordinated carbon compounds are also studied. The geometries from calculations with several common computationally inexpensive methods have been tested against high level CCSD/cc-pVTZ geometries for a series of substituted silenes. Southern right whale vocalisations recorded in Walker Bay, South Africa, between June and November 1999, were analysed to investigate the acoustic repertoire, the relationship between calling behaviour and whale presence, the proportions of vocal and silent whales, and of recorded calls from unseen whales, and the evidence for vocal individuality. This marks the first study of right whale vocalisation in South African waters. A simple matrix system with the axes acoustic contour and onset frequency described twelve call types. Cryptic genes are phenotypically silent DNA sequences with the potential to code for a function, but remain inactive during the normal life span of the organism. However they can be activated by a single mutational event such as recombination, deletion, insertions or point mutation, resulting in a discernible phenotype.
