Abstract:
Artikkelissa selvitetään Henri Bergsonin nauruteoriaa teoksessa Nauru ja arvioidaan sen merkitystä osana Bergsonin filosofiaa yleisemmin. Lisäksi artikkelissa täydennetään Bergsonin nauruteoriaa Gilles Deleuzen, Baruch Spinozan ja Friedrich Nietzschen ajatusten pohjalta. Bergson analysoi teoksessa komiikan synnyttämää naurua ja näkee tämän elämän reaktiona sitä kangistavia taipumuksia vastaan. Elämän luovan mukautumisen ja sen kangistumisen välisestä jännitteestä käytetään artikkelissa nimitystä ”koominen jännite”. Nauru on Bergsonin mukaan olennaisesti inhimillinen ja yhteisöllinen ilmiö, joka huomauttaa jäsenilleen yhteisön elämän kannalta haitallisista poikkeamista. Komiikka on tämän korjaustoiminnon kehittyneempi muoto, ja artikkelissa esitelläänkin myös Bergsonin esteettistä teoriaa. Taiteen tehtävänä on Bergsonin mukaan avata välittömiä näkymiä todellisuuden piirteisiin, jotka jäävät arkisissa havainnoissamme huomaamatta. Komiikalla on myös tällainen paljastava luonne, mutta se on yhteisöllisen korjausliikkeen palveluksessa. Bergsonin nauruteorian omaperäisenä ansiona on sen dynaaminen lähestymistapa komiikkaan, joka tuo esiin naurun yhteisöllisen luonteen. Lähestymistapa on monipuolisempi ja kattavampi kuin useimmat filosofiset ja psykologiset teoriat naurusta ja komiikasta, jotka keskittyvät muodollisiin määritelmiin ja subjektiiviseen kokemukseen. Artikkelissa ehdotetaan kuitenkin kolmea korjausta Bergsonin teoriaan. Teoriaa pitää täydentää komiikan ajoituksen, laajemman naurukäsityksen ja koomisen jännitteen perustavamman merkityksen osalta. Nämä täydennykset pohjautuvat erityisesti Gilles Deleuzen ajatukseen huumorista intensiteettien taiteena. Lisäksi koomisen jännitteen tarkempaa luonnetta kartoitetaan Spinozan ja Nietzschen ajatusten kautta. Spinozan ajattelusta löytyy jäsennys naurun myönteiselle roolille. Nietzsche taas hahmottelee naurulle laajempaa merkitystä, jossa yhdistyvät Bergsonin esteettiset teemat sekä naurun suhde elinvoiman edistämiseen ja rajoittamiseen.

Abstract:
This research examines Australia's interests in Nauru in development diplomacy and the obstacles to achieving or achieving these interests. The concept used in analyzing this phenomenon is the concept of Development Diplomacy and National Interests. Furthermore, in this study using qualitative research methods with data collection techniques carried out by literature studies or Internet research where all data comes from secondary data. The results of this study indicate that Australia's interest in Nauru in conducting development diplomacy is to maintain its position in the Pacific Region, namely to ensure regional security. Preventing Chinese influence in the Pacific through harmonious relations with the creation of a political partnership between Australia and Nauru. Maintaining the stability of the Pacific Region, one of which makes Nauru a location for Australian Illegal Immigration. And strengthening bilateral relations between the two parties so that Australia can control Nauru's natural resources as well as encourage the implementation of development cooperation. In addition, obstacles to achieving Australia's interests in Nauru are threats to Australia's position in the Pacific region, China's influence which threatens Australia, challenges for Australia in maintaining stability in the Pacific region and challenges for Australia to bilateral relations with Nauru. Penelitian ini mengkaji mengenai kepentingan Australia terhaap Nauru dalam diplomasi pembangunan dan hambatan dalam mencapai atau meraih kepentingan tersebut. Konsep yang digunakan dalam menganalisis fenomena ini adalah konsep Diplomasi Pembangunan dan Kepentingan nasional. Selanjutnya, pada penelitian ini mengunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan studi literatur atau Internet research di mana keseluruhan data berasal dari data sekunder. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kepentingan Australia terhadap Nauru dalam melakukan diplomasi pembangunan adalah mempertahankan posisinya di Kawasan Pasifik yakni untuk menjamin terciptanya keamanan regional. Mencegah pengaruh China di Pasifik melalui hubungan harmonis dengan terciptanya kemitraan politik antara Australia dengan Nauru. Menjaga stabilitas Kawasan Pasifik satu di antaranya menjadikan Nauru sebagai lokasi penampungan Imigrasi Ilegal Australia. Dan memperkuat hubungan bilateral di antara kedua belah pihak agar Australia bisa menguasai sumber daya alam Nauru termasuk juga mendorong terlaksanannya kerjasama pembangunan. Selain itu hambatan dalam mencapai kepentingan Australia terhadap Nauru adalah Ancaman terhadap posisi Australia di Kawasan Pasifik, Pengaruh China yang Mengancam Australia, Tantangan bagi Australia dalam menjaga stabilitas di Kawasan Pasifik dan Tantangan bagi Australia terhadap hubungan bilateral dengan Nauru.

Abstract:
This paper explains the connection between colonialism, environmental destruction, capitalism, and dependency in Nauru. Nauru is an extreme example of how the legacy of colonialism has had a destructive impact on the indigenous people. In the case of Nauru, Pivot is the collapse of the symbiotic relationship between humans and the environment. There has been limited research on the impact of colonialism and ecological destruction on indigenous people, especially in international relations scholarship. The analysis of Nauru represents a microcosm of the conflict between environmental sustainability and the commercial economy. Nauru has undergone environmental injustice for decades and has delivered a prolonged impact of dietary problems and health crises. I argue that the current Nauruan national crisis and economic stagnation have resulted from its complex history of colonialism and the failure of post-colonial successive governments to escape from the former colonial ruler's structurally induced dependency.

Abstract:
Abstract Nauru, a small island in the tropical Pacific, generates cloud plumes that may grow to over 100-km lengths. This study uses observations to examine the mesoscale disturbance of the marine atmospheric boundary layer by the island that produces these cloud plumes. Observations of the surface layer were made from two ships in the vicinity of Nauru and from instruments on the island. The structure of the atmospheric boundary layer over the island was investigated using aircraft flights. Cloud production over Nauru was examined using remote sensing instruments. The diurnal cycles of surface meteorology and radiation are characterized at a point near the west (downwind) coast of Nauru. The spatial variation of surface meteorology and radiation are also examined using surface and aircraft measurements. During the day, the island surface layer is warmer than the marine surface layer and wind speed is lower than over the ocean. Surface heating forces the growth of a thermal internal boundary layer, within which a plume of cumulus clouds forms. Cloud production begins early in the morning over the ocean near the island’s lee shore; as heating intensifies during the day, cloud production moves upwind over Nauru. These clouds form a plume that may extend over 100 km downwind of Nauru. Aircraft observations showed that a plume of warm, dry air develops over the island that extends 15–20 km downwind before dissipating. Limited observations suggest that the cloud plume may be sustained farther downwind of Nauru by a pair of convective rolls. Suggestions for further investigation of the cloud plume are made.

Abstract:
Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani naurun ja hymyn sekä institutionaalisuuden yhteyksiä poliisin työssä. Tutkimusaineistonani käytän tosi-tv-sarjaa Poliisit. Aineisto on koostettu sarjan 15 eri jaksosta. Poimin aineistosta analyysiini kohtaukset, joissa esiintyy naurua, hymyä tai poliisien asiatyylistä poikkeavia ilmauksia. Tällaisia kohtauksia on yhteensä 47 kappaletta. Pääasiallisena tutkimusmetodina ja teoreettisena lähtökohtana kvalitatiivisessa tutkimuksessani on keskustelunanalyysi. Erittelen aineiston tilanteet kahteen pääkategoriaan: asiakaskohtaamisiin ja poliisien keskinäiseen vuorovaikutukseen. Asiakaskohtaamisissa poliisi nauraa esimerkiksi kieltäytyessään uskomasta tai kiusoitellakseen asiakasta. Poliisien keskinäisessä vuorovaikutuksessa naurua esiintyy esimerkiksi jälkipuintitilanteissa, tilanteiden ennakoinnissa, kiusoittelussa ja kertomusten yhteydessä. Analyysini osoittaa, että poliisi rakentaa institutionaalisuuttaan esimerkiksi päämäärähakuisella keskustelulla, mainitsemalla olevansa virkatehtävissä, käskemällä asiakkaita sekä noudattamalla poliisille tyypillistä vuorovaikutusjärjestystä. Poliisin käyttämä kieli myös vähentää vuorovaikutustilanteiden institutionaalisuutta. Institutionaalisuus vähenee esimerkiksi vertauksilla ja asiatyylistä poikkeavilla sananvalinnoilla, sanaleikeillä ja huumorimoodissa esitetyillä kysymyksillä sekä normista poikkeavalla toiminnalla. Naurulla on usein osuus institutionaalisuuden vähenemiseen, sillä institutionaalisuutta vähentävien sananvalintojen, vertausten tai toiminnan välittömässä läheisyydessä esiintyy usein naurua. Institutionaalisuuden väheneminen näyttäisi liittyvän toimintoihin, jotka eivät ole välttämättömiä tehtävien hoitamisen kannalta. Aineiston perusteella ne kuitenkin näyttävät tekevän tehtävien hoidosta ja ilmapiiristä mukavampia. Myös poliisin kanssa toimivat asiakkaat nauravat vuoroillaan, mikä osoittaa, että institutionaalisuuden väheneminen joissain tilanteissa tekee poliisin kohtaamisen asiakkaalle mukavammaksi. Tutkimukseni todistaa, että naurulla on merkittävä tehtävä poliisin vuorovaikutuksessa. Nauru vähentää vuorovaikutustilanteiden institutionaalisuutta ja on poliisin työn kannalta oleellinen tekijä.

Abstract:
In October 2016 the newspaper the Guardian published an interactive database online with classified incident reports from an Australian overseas asylum seeker processing centre on the island republic of Nauru. The incident reports describe events that occurred within the Nauru Regional Processing Centre and this collection of over 2000 documents were given the name of “Nauru Files”. By using Nick Haslam's dehumanisation theory this thesis aimed to analyse the Nauru Files to find if the documents present evidence of animalistic and/or mechanistic dehumanisation. Upon reviewing the Nauru Files the author found four overacting themes; (1) deteriorating mental health for asylum seekers; (2) sexual assault, abusive behaviour and misbehaviour by staff, (3) incidents involving children and (4) misrepresentation of information. Furthermore, the evidence connected with these themes within the incident reports indicates dehumanisation, mainly mechanistic - meaning asylum seekers were deprived of aspects of humanness and were repeatedly treated as objects. Related to the Nauru Files a closer review of Australian immigration policies was conducted. The results show that the dehumanisation that is evident in the Nauru Files can be considered to be a product of Australia's long history of systematic dehumanisation of asylum seekers from non-European countries.

Abstract:
The Republic of Nauru, a small Pacific island nation, has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. Obesity emerged rapidly in Nauru during the 1970s, a period characterised by political independence and unprecedented economic growth resulting from lucrative phosphate mining. In the mid-1970s, the Nauruan population was one of the first in the world in which obesity, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease – co-morbidities associated with obesity – were identified as significant public health concerns. Such ‘lifestyle diseases’ continue to have debilitating effects on the Nauruan community. Obesity is generally understood to result from an energy imbalance; that is, people eat and drink more calories over time than they expend. This biomedical paradigm is implicit in the majority of research relating to obesity, such that the lifestyle to which obesity is attributed is limited to diet and activity. Yet in practice, lifestyle is much more than this. The lifestyle of a particular group is related to political, legal, religious, economic and value systems, modes of education, communication, transport and healthcare, and styles of art, music and entertainment. In this thesis I draw on ethnographic participant observation carried out in the Republic of Nauru during 2010-11, life history interviews, and diverse historical materials to answer three questions. First, what characterises the Nauruan lifestyle? Second, in what ways did the Nauruan lifestyle change over the second half of the twentieth century, the time period during which obesity and diabetes rapidly escalated? Finally, how might these changes be linked to the emergence and persistence of ‘lifestyle diseases’ in Nauru? I focus on one characteristic that stood out prominently in many different aspects of Nauruan life: ‘island time’, or the suggestion that there is ‘No Action Unless Really Urgent’. In theorisation of obesity, such living for the moment has been interpreted as laziness, pleasure-seeking or lack of self-control. However, a deeper analysis reveals that island time emerged gradually in the latter half of the twentieth century as Nauruans incorporated market-derived moral values into their everyday lives. This has led to profound changes in the way people feel when engaged in social exchanges, and is linked to temporally-shorter and more spatially dispersed social networks. I thus recast living for the moment as representative of a social trend rather than individual self-interest, and obesity as a phenomenon associated with the space between bodies rather than within each one. This leads me to consider more closely the links between social relationships and health. In Nauru, as in many societies, it is difficult to disentangle the biological and the social; the same feeling of unhealthiness, for example, is associated with being clinically ill and having a fight with a loved one. Yet many activities that are associated with tightening social networks, and which are prominent in the lifestyle characterised by island time – eating, drinking, or sitting and gossiping, for example – are also associated with obesity emergence. As a result, being biomedically healthy and feeling healthy are now somewhat incompatible in Nauru. In concluding, I argue that the adoption of economic rhetoric into everyday life has re-shaped moral values, everyday social relationships, and the demographic health profile on Nauru.

Duomenų bazių valdymo sistema (DBVS) yra pagrindas beveik visų šiuolaikinių informacinių sistemų (IS). Iš esmės kiekvienas verslo, mokslo arba valdžios valdymo procesas remiasi duomenų baze. Interneto plėtra tik paspartino šią tendenciją – šiandien duomenų bazių operacijos yra kiekvieno duomenų pakeitimo didesniuose tinklalapiuose, paieškos arba apsipirkimo internete variklis [1]. Šiuo metu rinkoje yra didelis komercinių ir nemokamų (taip pat ir atviro kodo) duomenų bazių valdymo sistemų (DBVS) pasirinkimas, pavyzdžiui: Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Microsoft Access, MySQL, PostgreSQL. Kiekviena jų turi savo privalumų ir trukumų. Tačiau informacinių sistemų projektavimo eiga, naudojant šias DBVS ir neatsižvelgiant į jų ypatumus, yra panaši: suprojektuojama duomenų bazė (sukuriamos lentelės, nustatomi jų tarpusavio ryšiai), rašomos užklausos, kuriamos (arba generuojamos) duomenų įvedimo/redagavimo formos bei kuriamos duomenų išrinkimo ataskaitos. Ši informacinių sistemų kūrimo tvarka yra nusistovėjusi per daugelį metų. Tačiau DB projektavimo procesas taptų lengvesnis, pakeitus IS projektavimo procesą taip, kad realizacijos metu iš pradžių būtų kuriamos formos, o tik po to iš sukurtų formų būtų generuojama duomenų bazė. Toks IS kūrimo procesas leistų iš dalies automatizuotų DB projektavimą. Be to, galutinai suderinus prototipus su užsakovu, užtektų tik sugeneruoti DB, t.y. nereikėtų iš naujo kurti formų, o sistema sugeneruotų DB bei automatiškai susietų formų laukus... The Data Base Management System (DBMS) is the foundation of almost every modern business information system. Virtually every administrative process in business, science or government relies on a database. There are a lot of DBMS products in our days, such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Microsoft Access, MySQL and PostgreSQL. Each of it has their advantages and disadvantages. But the database design process using these DBMS is the same – at the first stage we need to create a database (tables and relationships between them), then we need to create (or generate by using wizard) forms for data input/modification and reports for data selection. However, the database design process would become easier by changing database design process in such a way that at first we create forms and then database is generated from forms data and forms are automatically associated with database tables. The task of research is to extend chosen free open source DBMS by new functions which would enable to develop forms and DB using new methods – automated database generation from forms and automatic forms association with database tables. OpenOffice.org Base DBMS and Java programming language has been chosen for the task implementation. This thesis consists of analysis, design, user manual, experimental and conclusion parts.

Abstract:
Objective: To provide six-year cumulative incidence of visual impairment and blindness, diabetic retinopathy (DR), age related macular degeneration (AMD), visually impairing cataract and features of glaucoma in an older age Kenyan population and the risk factors for each. Design: Population based cohort study with six-year follow-up (n=2,171; 50% participation) Main outcome measures: Six-year cumulative incidence of visual impairment and blindness, DM, DR, AMD, visually impairing cataract and features of glaucoma, risk factors for incidence and population estimates. Results: The six-year cumulative incidence of visual impairment and blindness was 119.4 (103.1 - 137.9) and 15.1 (10.4 – 21.7) per 1000 of population respectively. The six-year cumulative incidence of DM and DR (in those with diabetes mellitus) was 61.0 (50.3 - 73.7) and 224.7 (116.9 - 388.2) per 1000 of population respectively. The six-year cumulative incidence of AMD was 164.2 (136.7 - 195.9) per 1000 of population and the six-year cumulative incidence of visually impairing cataract was 235.6 (213.5 – 259.3) per 1000 of population. Associations with incident cases were demonstrated for each with age and diabetes being the leading associations across the primary outcome measures. Conclusions: This six-year follow-up of a population-based cohort indicates a high incidence of visual impairment and blindness and provides data, for the first time, on the incidence of DR, AMD and cataract in Kenya. Abstract:
Denna uppsats prövar empiriskt kapitalstockens och arbetsmarknadens institutioners (AMI) betydelse för arbetslösheten på kort och medellång sikt, utifrån keynesiansk och nykeynesiansk teoribildning. Uppsatsens huvudsakliga keynesianska teoretiska modell utgår ifrån antaganden om att arbetslösheten uppvisar hysteresis/persistens samt att NAIRU bestäms endogent, till exempel utifrån ett antagande om att lönebildningen präglas av ömsesidighet. Phillipskurvan antas vara långsiktigt icke-vertikal. Datamaterialet täcker som mest åren 1960-2010 samt 19 OECD-länder och analyseras bland annat genom OLS, panelkorrigerade standardfel, fixa effekter m.m. Den empiriska analysen indikerar att det finns ett statistiskt signifikant negativt samband mellan reala nettokapitalstockens tillväxttakt och arbetslöshet. Analysen ger inget stabilt stöd för att AMI kan förklara arbetslösheten. Den keynesianska teorin verkar således mer användbar än den nykeynesianska för att förstå variationer i arbetslöshet över tid och mellan länder inom OECD de senaste decennierna.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to contrast and test the NAIRU theory and the Keynesian theory of unemployment econometrically. For the former, wage push variables are key in explaining the rise of European unemployment, for the latter accumulation is. The theories are tested using time series data for Germany, France, Italy, the UK and the USA, using the seemingly unrelated regression method (SUR). Unemployment benefits, union density and the tax wedge were used as wage push variables, and the growth of business capital stock as the accumulation variable. The NAIRU specification performed poorly, with only the tax wedge having a positive effect on unemployment as predicted. The Keynesian approach was more successful, with accumulation being statistically significant in all countries. Moreover, the tax wedge and accumulation are fairly robust to changes in the specification and can be pooled across countries. (author's abstract)

The arms trade is among the most profitable businesses in the world, with predictable growth year on year. International major arms shipments declined slightly between 2012–16 and 2017–21, but increased by 19% in Europe. The arms trade becomes trafficking in arms when transactions are made in violation of existing arms laws. According to the global organized crime index, the global arms trafficking score is 4.92 (out of 10). Libya has the highest score of arms and ammunition trafficking in the world (9.50), and the last place in the report is occupied by Tuvalu and Nauru (score 1.00). Also, in connection with the current war in Ukraine, which is overwhelmed by donations from all the states of the world, it does not have the means to prevent the diversion of weapons in the existing illegality of the arms trade.

U posljednjih dvije stotine godina razvoj nauke, a posebno medicine, farmacije, matematike, fizike i hemije, omogućio je velike uspjehe u zaštiti zdravlja ljudi, povećanje njihove težine, visine, smanjenje smrtnosti novorođenčadi i povećanje očekivanog životnog vijeka. Prve dvije industrijske revolucije omogućile su velike napretke u povezivanju ljudi sredstvima transporta i komunikacije. Treća industrijska revolucija, zasnovana na robotizaciji i automatizaciji, povezana sa razvojem informacijskih tehnologija, omogućila je veliko ubrzanje i mnogo veću globalnu povezanost. Četvrta industrijska revolucija u toku, zasnovana na daljnjem unapređenju informacijskih tehnologija i dostignuća hemije, fizike, kibernetike, biohemije i biofizike, otvara nove mogućnosti i izrazito povećava brzinu prometa podacima, uslugama i robama. Razvoj kvantnog računarstva dodatno povećava prilike za izrazito ubrzavanje obrade podataka, proračuna i transfer znanja, ali i rizike po nacionalnu i globalnu sigurnost. Sa ovako velikim mogućnostima i transformacijama u toku, globalni poredak, nažalost, obilježavaju velike nejednakosti u pristupu i upotrebi naučnih dostignuća. Sa druge strane, za pravedniji svijet u vremenu koje slijedi bilo bi neophodno realizirati Ciljeve održivog razvoja Ujedinjenih nacija. Međutim, za ostvarivanje tih ciljeva distribucija raspoloživih finansijskih sredstava morala bi biti znatno uravnoteženija. Finansijska nejednakost, koja je omogućena globalnim ekonomskim i pravnim sistemom kojim dominiraju poreski rajevi, kao “čuvari bogatstva”, proistekla je iz velikog “nerazumijevanja” ili “nesporazumijevanja” na relaciji: razvoj nauke, filozofski principi razvoja nauke, epistemologija, etika u nauci i etika općenito, sreća i smisao postojanja ljudske vrste.

Abstract Waves are primarily important for the tidal current power generation as they relate not only to the wave load acting on the tidal turbine but also to the installation/maintenance cost of the device through the workable day rate at the sea. Generally, the tidal current power site is in a narrow strait, and the wave characteristics are strongly dependent on the place. Also, there are few data itself. So, we conducted the wave observation in Naru Strait, Goto City, Nagasaki, where the tidal current power project by the Ministry of Environment is in progress. An AWAC (Acoustic Wave and Current Meter) was deployed on the sea bottom of 20m depth in Naru Strait on 18 May and recovered on 12 November, 2017. The wave data obtained for about 6 months were analyzed as wave spectra and mean directions by the records of surface elevation together with tidal current velocity. In particular, the changes of wave amplitude by the tidal current and the storms including typhoon passing are presented.

This report presents the results of a survey conducted at Nakuru Training Institute, Kenya to evaluate the blended learning experiences of students and instructors in courses developed during a technology-enabled learning project and offered in the blended mode. The study was carried out among 144 students and nine instructors of blended learning classes. The courses were created and facilitated by instructors who had received blended learning implementation training from the Commonwealth of Learning. Mixed findings emerged from comparing the students’ grades in blended and non blended learning courses. Learners’ opinions of the blended learning environment were generally favourable, because the blended learning experience gave students the freedom to learn when, where and at a speed that worked for them.
