Abstract:
This paper examines the use of co-switching in Navajo written poetry. I look specifically at the use of code-switching from English dominant poems to Navajo. I outline three general semantic domains that are most commonly code-switched from English to Navajo: 1) emotions; 2) mythic characters; and 3) traditional place-names. I suggest that this has to do with a general linguistic ideology that understands these domains as incommensurate with English. I argue that such code-switches are “emblematic identity displays.” I conclude by discussing the relationship between “folk” orthographies and “standard” orthographies. I argue that an over-reliance on “the standard” and a diminishing of “folk” orthographies limits the potential for creativity and subtly undermines notions of incommensurability when Navajo poets are limited to “the standard”, a standard that many Navajos do not know.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the collection of poetry, Of Cartography, by Navajo poet and visual artist Esther G. Belin. In the collection, the poet explores the concepts of home and the self, merging her urban experience with traditional Navajo teachings. Written in a mixture of English and Navajo, the collection abounds in experimental poems with structure directly referring to the Navajo view of the cosmic reality. Grounded both in the Navajo philosophy of Beauty and Balance and modern, urban experience, Belin’s story can be interpreted as a healing rite that aims at restoring hózhǫ́: an ideal Navajo way of life which centers on the spiritual, physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of an individual and his/her community.

Abstract:
This article suggests that much of the use of the Navajo language in contemporary Navajo written poetry, especially English dominant poetry, serves as an icon of proper Navajo usage. It is a purist view of the Navajo language. Navajo poetry is implicated, even if tacitly, in a discourse of linguistic purism that is tied to an oppositional linguistic ideology that sees Navajo and English as discrete and distinct “objects.” Navajo poetry erases the contemporary sociolinguistic diversity - including bilingual Navajo - on the Navajo Nation. And in so doing, it closes off parts of Navajo sociolinguistic realities and in its stead creates an imagined Navajo language community.

Abstract:
This paper examines the use of increments (Schegloff 1996, Ford et al. 2002) in naturally occurring Navajo discourse (conversation.) Navajo is a polysynthetic verb-final language belonging to the Athabascan family, spoken in the American Southwest. It finds that Navajo increments, specifically “glue-ons” (Couper-Kuhlen & Ono this volume) appear in the form of temporal or locative adverbial phrases as well as unattached NPs, as is the case in English and other languages. However, Navajo increments do not appear to serve two functions suggested by Ford et al.(2002) for increments in English: “pursuing uptake” in the case of lack of recipiency, and the indexing of a “stance display” toward the speaker’s own previous utterance. This is not surprising given other cultural differences in Athabaskan interaction which revolve around a value on individual autonomy, with important consequences for language use.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article engages questions about translation, phonological iconicity, and seductive ideophony. I begin by discussing the work of Paul Friedrich as it relates to questions of linguistic relativity and poetics and the qualities of music and myth that constitute poetry. I then present a poem written in Navajo by Rex Lee Jim and four translations of the poem. Three are from Navajo consultants and one of those translations will be, from a certain perspective, rather surprising. Namely, why does one consultant translate this poem as if it is composed of ideophones? The fourth translation is mine. I then work through the morphology of the poem in Navajo, saying something more about the translators and the process of translation. I then provide a transcript of a conversation I had with Blackhorse Mitchell about this poem. I use this to take up questions of phonological iconicity (punning) and the seductive quality of ideophony (the pole of music). I also place this poem within a context of the stick game in Navajo philosophy (the pole of myth). This leads, in the conclusion, to reflections about linguistic relativity, misunderstandings, sound, and poetics.

Abstract:

Frequent droughts are common and extreme precipitation is a normal weather pattern for the Navajo country and has been for almost 6000 years. The Navajo do not abandon the often that drought stricken areas demonstrating their ability adapt to extreme weather conditions. For almost 300 years, the Navajo, while in a state of constant warfare with many different surrounding peoples, continued to develop and grow as a tribe, while living off of livestock, farming and hunting. Currently open for public review and comment is a new proposed Navajo Rangeland Improvement Act of 2014. It is the people, the tribal citizen’s needs that need administration.

Abstract:
The rasa theory of Indian aesthetics is concerned with the nature of the genesis of emotions and their corresponding experiences, as well as the condition of being in and experiencing the aesthetic world. According to the Indian aesthetic theory, rasa ("juice" or "essence," something that is savored, that is tasted) is an embodied aesthetic experienced through an artistic performance. In this thesis, I have investigated how the aesthetics of rasa philosophy account for creative presence and its experiences in Karnatik vocal performances. Beyond the facets of grammar, Karnatik rāga performance signifies a deeper ontological meaning as a way to experience rasa, idiomatically termed as rāga-rasa by South Indian rāga practitioners. A vocal performance of a rāga ideally depends on a singer's embodied experience of rāga and rāga-bhāva (emotive expression of rāga), as much as it does on his/her theoretical knowledge and skillset of a rāga's svaras (scale degrees), gamakas (ornamentation), lakṣhaṇās (emblematic phrases), and so on. Reflecting on my own experience of being a Karnatik student and performer for the last two decades, participant observation, interviews, and analysis of Indian aesthetic theory of rasa, I propose a way of understanding that to sing rāga is to embody bhāva opening the space that brings rasa into being. Reflecting on the epistemology of rāga theory, particularly its smaller entities of svaras and gamakas, and through a phenomenological description of the process through which a vocalist embodies rāga (including how a guru transmits this musical embodiment to his shishya [disciple]), I argue that the notion of rāga-rasa itself has agency in determining the nature of svaras and its gamakas in a rāga performance. Additionally, focusing on the relationship between performers and rasikas (drinkers of the juice), this thesis examines how the embodiment of rāga-bhāva and the experience of rasa open the possibility for musicians and audiences to live rāga-rasa in a performance.

abstract: This study questioned how the Navajo Nation was going to mitigate and/or adapt to Global Climate Change. By employing a Diné philosophy based research methodology this study seeks to holistically reframe the lens that the Navajo Nation conceptualizes Global Climate Change. The study uses a comprehensive review of literature that pertained to four research questions. The research questions are: 1) What do Diné oral histories say about climate change? 2) How is the Navajo Nation going to mitigate and adapt to changes to the climate using Western knowledge? 3) How can Diné research methodologies help inform policies that will mitigate and adapt to climate change? 4) What type of actions and frameworks can the Navajo Nation use to generate meaningful policy? The study utilizes a Diné philosophy based analytical framework to focus on how climate change will affect the Diné peoples' A) spirituality, B) economic sustainability, C) family-community, and D) home-environment. The findings are: a) the Navajo spiritual ceremonies are process models that can be used to mitigate and/or adapt to climate change, and they must continue to be practiced. b) The economic development section revealed that economic security is not found solely in resource development, but in the security of ceremonial knowledge. The burden of the Navajo government however, is not to promote labor, but the ability for people to live into old age. c) Because families and communities drive Diné philosophy, Diné families and communities must remember how to treat each other with respect. The collective survival of the Navajo Nation always depended on this teaching. d) The findings of the home-environment section is that Diné have to acknowledge that their lives are fragile in the face of global climate change, and the only way that they can live happily is to trust the power of the stories of the ancestors, and seek to embody the Diné philosophy. This study succeeded as an honest attempt to apply an Indigenous Diné methodology to reframe Global Climate Change into a phenomenon that is survivable.

Abstract:
Navajo school students, it is believed, underachieve at school in terms of school attendance, dropout rates, and standardized performance tests. Among the many reasons proposed to explain the persistent school underachievement is that school culture is largely based on individualism, interpersonal competition, and other Western norms and values. These, it is argued, are an anathema to Native Americans. Hence, school culture may predispose many Navajo High School students to failure. To test this belief I constructed a model of school achievement motivation drawn from Western conceptualizations of achievement motivation described Navajo High School students achievement motivation. Using confirmatory factor analyses tests of equivalency were conducted that contrasted non-traditional Navajo students and females with near traditional Navajo students and males. Using structural equation modeling, I examined the relations of the language, location, and gender variables on the achievement goal factors, mediated by school measures of achievement, ability beliefs, social goals and achievement goals. I concluded that non-traditional and near traditional Navajo students are more similar than dissimilar. Clearly this raises concerns regarding the making of policy based on assumptions regarding presumed differences between non-traditional and near traditional Navajo High School students. I also concluded that, school achievement measures, the ability beliefs, and the social approval and social concern goals are important factors that influence the school achievement goals Navajo students emphasize. This has implications for the manner in which schools and teachers emphasize these factors in classrooms.

Abstract:
Themes from the previous two chapters are interwoven for a trans-Atlantic, comparative perspective on the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries in Mexico and Spain on the eve of encounter. The emphasis is primarily on their most consequential kingdoms: the Aztec Triple Alliance and the Crown of Castile-León. Major themes of comparison include ethnic affiliation and national mythos, patterns of urbanism and political and economic organization, military and transportation technologies, and worldview framed through religion and philosophy. Previous comparative histories of the two culture areas have emphasized technological differences, particularly with regard to naval and military capabilities. These differences certainly existed, but such accounts often ignore the role of cultural and ideological variables, such as the role of micro-patriotism within Mesoamerican polities of the region and differences in battlefield ethos and the religious framing of warfare between Aztecs and Spaniards. These were critical to how the Spanish-led invasion of Mesoamerica unfolded. Likewise, similarities in certain cultural variables between the two regions enabled the post-conquest creation of New Spain to be a negotiated process that saw the birth of hybrid and syncretic beliefs and material culture.

HMCS Victoria Repair Work Period was a strategic partnership between a naval repair facility and an industry partner fostering ground up cultural change and pushing the limits of integration at the waterfront. Many traditionalists might argue that partnering with industry via in-service-support (ISS) contracts is a precursor to rendering naval maintenance facilities redundant, thus accelerating their obsolescence. However, the HMCS Victoria Repair Work Period (VIC RWP) in the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) dry dock in Esquimalt, BC presented a unique opportunity to further a philosophy predicated on an integrated and synergetic approach. A vast work scope, complex submarine design, supply chain issues exacerbated by specialized labour shortages, spurred a change to a long standing approach to submarine maintenance, namely with a Request for Proposal for integrated support resulting in a long-term partnership aimed at achieving the operational requirements of the RCN.

Software developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the unsteady propeller analysis and effective wake calculation has been transitioned to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. The lifting surface propeller software is designed to be coupled with a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow code. . The basic philosophy of the coupling remains the same, but the procedure for the coupling was largely revised and validated by the authors. Sample cases for the coupled lifting-surface/RANS analysis package are included in this paper and compared with experimental data. These sample cases show that this analysis procedure has great potential for the computation of propulsor maneuvering forces.

A marine engineer is often confronted with the problem of repairs/maintenance at sea. However, an advance warning of the impending problem can greatly help in scheduling maintenance more efficiently by storing appropriate spares and positioning suitable expertise. The ability to predict the remaining operational life of marine gas turbine engines is considered as an essential requirement for future generation diagnostic systems. Engine deterioration modeling provides the means to estimate economic implications of engine degradation, essential for operational and logistics planning. This paper presents the development of a performance analysis and advanced engine fault diagnostics model for the Rolls-Royce Intercooled-Recuperated WR-21 gas turbine using Artificial Intelligence techniques. It also shows how these innovative solutions have the potential to influence the maintenance philosophy and optimal composition of crew.

Accurate prognostic models and associated algorithms that are capable of predicting future component failure rates or performance degradation rates for shipboard propulsion systems are critical for optimizing the timing of recurring maintenance actions. As part of the Naval maintenance philosophy on Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), prognostic algorithms are being developed for gas turbine applications that utilize state-of-the-art probabilistic modeling and analysis technologies. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) Code 9334 has continued interest in investigating methods for implementing CBM algorithms to modify gas turbine preventative maintenance in such areas as internal crank wash, fuel nozzles and lube oil filter replacement. This paper will discuss a prognostic modeling approach developed for the LM2500 and Allison 501-K17 gas turbines based on the combination of probabilistic analysis and fouling test results obtained from NSWCCD in Philadelphia. In this application, the prognostic module is used to assess and predict compressor performance degradation rates due to salt deposit ingestion. From this information, the optimum time for on-line waterwashing or crank washing from a cost/benefit standpoint is determined.

With a renewed global focus on anti-submarine warfare (ASW), the United States Navy will increasingly rely on unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) technology to serve as a cost-effective force multiplier. Modern UUV development necessitates a uniquely constrained, iterative approach to the traditional submarine design spiral. Considering a broad spectrum of customer-generated requirements, the UUV conceptual design process applies the best practices of naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, systems engineering, and submersible design. This paper provides an assessment of the traditional approach to the UUV design and development process. Specifically, this paper analyzes the design philosophy for modern UUVs, provides a design framework for the UUV conceptual design process, and details specific recommendations to encourage innovation in the subsea realm.

Past and current Navy maintenance philosophy in military systems is to perform maintenance at scheduled intervals based on manufacturer maintenance recommendations. For example, if a manufacturer recommends that lube oil filters require replacement every 300 operating hours, maintenance personnel replaced oil filters regardless of condition. The Rolls Royce Naval Marine INC (RRNMI) designed, RR4500 Auxiliary Turbine Generator (ATG) program has designed advanced system monitoring capable of indicating out of specified conditions warning shipboard personnel to take maintenance action. Using a variety of sensors and state-of-the-art micro-processing, the RR4500 ATG utilizes a combination of audible and visual alarms alerting operators of out of condition parameters. The warning system allows maintenance personnel to investigate potential system problems before more serious damage occurs. However, maintenance personnel rely on alarms rather than performance trending to commence maintenance actions which requires an unscheduled system shutdown to correct the problem. Condition Based and Predictive Maintenance utilizes trending of data, already captured by the Full Authority Digital Control (FADC), to predict a potential failure prior to the onset of an alarm or system shutdown. This maintenance philosophy is called Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). Maintenance actions are based on the condition of the hardware or system rather a scheduled maintenance plan. The proposed application of CBM and Predictive Maintenance for the RR4500 ATG will be presented.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Specialist Team for Seaway Mobility (ST/SM) has progressed significantly in the development of new mission-oriented maneuvering criteria in the format of a NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG). This work was finalized in July 2010, and the STANAG has now been submitted for ratification to all NATO member countries. Navies can now include maneuverability requirements in their vessel specifications more comprehensively and accurately. Obviously, this will have implications for prospective ship designers and builders, who will be obliged to meet these requirements. The objective of this paper is to create awareness that these criteria are approaching soon. Tools and methods are to be prepared and validated to assist in the design of the vessel in accordance with the criteria. The paper explains the prediction and verification procedures of vessel compliance. First, the philosophy and approach of the criteria is explained and discussed. Discussing all criteria is a task too detailed for this paper, as there are up to 240 criteria, depending on missions and capabilities. A selected subset of criteria is discussed in this paper. An example of the verification process is carried out for one ship: the naval combatant benchmark vessel 5415M. The reader will be guided through the steps of: selection of criteria, selection of tools, and the verification itself. The contents of the steps will be different in each loop of the design spiral. This paper shows methods to predict and verify compliance with each requirement in both the conceptual and detailed design stage. In the conceptual design stage the verification is done by performing numerical simulations. In the detailed design stage, these simulations are augmented by a smart selection of scaled model tests.

Following the design shift in Naval ship architecture from conventional mechanical through hybrid to Integrated Electric Propulsion (IEP), the starting philosophy of prime movers needs to be rationalised so as to interact and augment the propulsion configuration and electrical distribution whilst remaining cost effective. To fulfil this requirement the UK Ministry of Defence contracted Ultra Electronics (PMES) to work in partnership to develop and demonstrate a gas turbine Electric Start and Generation System (ESGS). The undertaken programme is to demonstrate full control over the gas turbine starting system and associated maintenance features together with generating sufficient electrical power that can be used to supply all the gas turbine alternator auxiliaries. This paper will give an overview of such requirements together with the design of the basic system and the challenges to ‘navalise’ such a product and install it on a marine gas turbine. The paper will continue by reviewing data obtained from factory acceptance testing and on-engine testing with the Marine Trent MT-30. It is hoped to further compare and analyse these results with future planned testing scheduled in late 2005. Conclusions will be drawn from the initial results, the design of the proposed ESGS system and comparisons with existing in-service gas turbine start systems.

The LSD-41 Whidbey Island Class of Amphibious dock landing ships are powered by two Colt-Pielstick PC2.5V Block 16 cylinder Main Propulsion Diesel engines. These engines represent the largest diesels in the U.S. Navy. Currently, they are started without the use of a mechanical starter, by injecting 100 cfm [47.2 LPs] of 3,000 psig [206.9 barr] high pressure air, reduced to 425 psig [29.3 barr] directly into one block of eight engine cylinders. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) was tasked to perform a proof of concept test that would demonstrate the capability of an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) gas turbine engine to start these large, medium speed diesel engines. This paper will present the background, installation and initial testing for this proof of concept test. The background section will discuss the test philosophy, the LSD-41 Land Based Engineering Site (LBES) and initial prototype testing. The installation section will discuss the modifications made to the LBES for this test and the characteristics and specifications of the test hardware. The testing section will discuss the test plan and the test procedures. This paper will not present any results or data analysis from this proof of concept test. Test site availability and equipment procurement delays postponed the start of this test until March, 1996. Therefore, the test results will be discussed at the upcoming Turbo Exposition conference.

Abstract:
Counter-rotating blade rows in single stage machines have been widely investigated in several applications like naval propulsion [1], axial fan [2] and axial pump design [3]. Previous publications have presented this design philosophy as a promising way to improve efficiency and cavitation performance [4]. Differently the goal of the presented design is to achieve lower required rotational speeds and at the same time a higher power density ratio, indirectly improving also the cavitation’s performance, aspiring actually to a compact design. However, a literature survey did not produce any evidence of significant advantage in axial-flow machines from this design philosophy in terms of machine power density. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the applicability of the counter-rotating impeller concept on mixed-flow and radial-flow pumps. The design example presented in this paper constitutes a mixed-flow first rotor with a radial second rotor that rotates in opposite direction. A 1-D design model demonstrates that power density coefficient has a maximum for optimum speeds of the rotors range. The design example parameters were selected based on the highest power density coefficient and efficiency. Unlike most published literature where the rotor speed ratios are not fixed, instead the speeds can be independently varied through two separate electric drives. Both the front and rear rotor were developed using multi-streamline curvature analysis which combines fluid dynamic loss model [5] with a slip model at the rotor exit [6]. Several hypotheses were considered to determine the most significant and independent parameters that run through a response surface optimizer tool, scripted in MATLAB®. It detects optimum specific speed for the rotors which maximizes the benefits of counter-rotating impeller design compared to rotor-stator machine with same design point. Assuming steady numerical approximation error, the fitness function of the optimizer tool is based on steady state CFD results. The fitness function depends on total head and hydraulic efficiency, which show a maximum as a result. Optimum geometries were identified and one was chosen for manufacturing and testing in a test rig. Transient CFD analysis was also done to determine volute losses and incidence losses between first and second rotor and pressure pulsations generated. At this stage, manufacturing of hydraulic components of test model is in progress, while the mechanical design of the machine is close to completion.
