Abstract:
The naval campaign of the Dnieper Liman, fought from the autumn of 1787 to the end of 1788, was one of the most decisive maritime confrontations in the modern history of the Eastern Mediterranean. Fought in conjunction with two major siege operations, the campaign between the naval forces of the Ottoman and Russian empires decided the fate of the key Turkish fortress of Özi (Ochakov), which controlled the mouth of the Dnieper. The campaign was part of the Russian empress Catherine II’s second war with the Ottomans, a confrontation initiated by the Porte in response to Catherine II’s provocativ

The War of the Pacific (1879–84) showcases the development of amphibious warfare during a period of industrialization and technological flux. Historians have traditionally framed Chilean victory in the war as a function of seapower: naval superiority from which victory on land followed as a result. This view underestimates the complex and reciprocal interplay of amphibious and naval operations throughout the conflict. The war can be better understood as a campaign of port hopping, enabled by maritime capacity and naval power, but reliant on amphibious elements to achieve political results and

Special attention is paid to Sir Charles Davers of Rushbrooke, one of the principal proposers of the patriotic project, who contributed the comparatively large sum of £300.

During World War II the United States attempted to prevent Germany from acquiring wolfram (tungsten ore) in Spain by buying it in the open market. Preemptive buying forced the Germans to pay more for and to consume less tungsten, a material crucial for the production of machine tools and armor-piercing shells. The income provided an important incentive for Spain to remain neutral. The naval blockade and the relatively low elasticity of the supply of wolfram contributed to the success of the wolfram-buying campaign.

Abstract:
AbstractAs a direct consequence of Sweden’s devastating losses in its war with Russia in 1808-9, an institute for the training of military surgeons was established in Stockholm in December 1810. This establishment soon became known as the Karolinska Institute and is the forerunner of today’s eponymous institution. This paper records the nature of the British assistance that led indirectly to the founding of this institute. This aid took the form of a report into the high morbidity and mortality rates due to scurvy which were sustained by the Swedish Fleet in Carlscrona in the summer of 1808. T

Abstract:
Airborne acoustic signature characterization of watercraft is one of the interests of Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD). A twenty-element planar spiral array was recently designed for this purpose. In June 2024, the system was used in a collaborative measurement campaign with East Carolina University in Wanchese, NC. The array was fixed to an offshore platform and recorded pure tone bursts of 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz from a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) positioned at ranges from 250 m up to 2 km. Within a 10 min period, estimations of transmission loss and SNR in

The trend of comprehensive digitalization, accelerated by COVID-19, requires adequate strategies for developing, implementing, and evaluating tools and practices for digitalization in more conservative and sensitive areas such as security and defense, and those regulated based on national and international criteria. The report presents digital tools for assessing knowledge developed at the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, which are used at each stage of the educational process - during admission to the educational institution, during the training itself, and during the final assessments for com

Abstract:
This paper describes the effort of designing an unconventional exhaust manifold for a marine gas turbine engine, with an integrated passive ventilation port for cooling the engine housing. The study is part of a larger program to substitute the propulsion gas turbines for the T22R defense frigate and make the proper aerodynamic adaptations. The system in question is unique, in the sense that it uses the exhaust gas momentum to entrain outside air and ventilate the engine enclosure. In achieving this, RANS computation was used to test various concepts and dimensions for the ventilation system.
