Abstract:
Translating naval architecture texts involves, besides knowledge and practice in the field, using specific terminology. The ability of handling specific terminology is supposed to be increased by relevant dictionary contextualizations illustrating the meaning and usage of naval architecture terminology. The technical dictionaries available, either on paper or as a wide web resource, provide the translation of terms, i.e. the ‚equivalent(s)’ in the target language, and, in some cases, the explanation of meaning. However, these dictionaries lack the contextualizations that can help both students

This study aims to offer a classification of shortened terms and terminological phrases in Maritime English using the lexico-semantic method. It is based on examples excerpted from learning materials designed for cadets and students of Navigation at Varna Naval Academy, all of them compiled in the Learner’s English-Bulgarian Maritime Dictionary and forming a large corpus representative of the domain they are used in. Shortening here is chosen as an umbrella term for initialisms, acronyms, clippings and blends. The topic is worth discussing because it reveals techniques of shortening in maritim

The substantial use of database technology in the collection and dissemination of information for naval tactical systems requires extensive data administration support. The Naval Warfare Tactical Data Base (NWDTB), which is the Navy's authoritative reference for tactical database format and structure, currently lacks sufficient data administration tools to provide an adequate level of data management and control. The feasibility of converting the NWTDB to an Information Resource Dictionary System (IRDS), which will yield an enhanced dictionary capability, is investigated. An analysis of the en

Abstract:
Abstract Corrosion Control Information Management System (CCIMS) is a US Navy partnership success story which consolidates corrosion control databases. Historically naval activities used various preservation databases to record the conditions of in-service coating systems, track material conditions and provide inspection and repair lists for components. Lack of a central database degraded the Navy’s ability to maintain data integrity. Consolidation of databases solved facility connectivity, data transfer, and communication problems and improved data accessibility, consistency and reliability.

This paper revolves around the development of an online visual dictionary with a view to improving lexical acquisitions in maritime contexts. Undoubtedly, technological advances in computer technology have led to increased speed in accessing information and processed data; therefore, we deem it appropriate to consider first what online dictionaries may bring to the study of the English vocabulary, that is to facilitate both access to and use of the information contained therein. Indeed, the possibility of automatic processing and research of a term in an index is one of the greatest advantages
