The article is devoted to the study of the origin of the Russian Naval artillery drill regulations (so called exercise) of the era of Peter the Great. Previously only one Russian Naval artillery exercise of the 18th century, introduced by F. M. Apraksin in 1718, was known. The comparison of two printed treatises of D. Grundell (the head of the Swedish Naval artillery in 1712–1716) with the exercise of Apraksin has revealed their obvious similarity. The author has discovered the Russian exercise of the late 1740s. On a foggy Monday morning in late September 2010 in Kiel, Germany, I received a phone call from Berlin. “Do you have any plans for November through summer of next year?” the voice inquired. One of the two German Marshall Fund congressional fellows for the 2010–2011 round had suddenly dropped out and a replacement was needed. The call came five months after I had been initially rejected for the fellowship, and while my life had certainly moved on (I had begun work on my PhD dissertation at the University of Kiel and had expected to stay in Northern Germany for two or three years), I quickly reg

Rationally planned training leads to adaptation and progress, and irrational planning leads to disruption of the course of adaptation reactions and overwork. For a rational periodization it is very important to identify training concepts based on detailed analysis of fatigue development mechanisms. Proper planning and execution of training will result in an increase in effort capacity. Adaptation, viewed from a biological point of view, is a complex defense mechanism against the demands caused by environmental changes. Abstract For conservation purposes, it is important to evaluate potential population consequences of noise disturbance. Based on maximum reported sound levels of no response to sonar, a mathematical model is used to predict the potential risk to the population of herring (Clupea harengus) when these levels are exceeded. Results show that risk varies with season depending on density of fish. During widespread feeding, the risk of any population consequences is low even at sonar source levels up to 235 dB (re 1 µPa m) and exercise durations exceeding 24 h at sonar frequencies 1–2 kHz. Abstract Introduction On United States Navy (USN) ships, most sailors are shift workers, required to support 24/7 operations. However, ~15% of the ship’s company are solely dayworkers who do not work in shifts. It is often assumed that the quality of life for dayworkers is better than that of shift workers. This study compared the well-being of dayworkers with that of shift workers. Methods Longitudinal, naturalistic observations were made of sailors (N=926; 18-59 years of age, ~80% males, ~84% enlisted personnel) on seven US Navy ships while performing their normal underway duties. Animals from such mass strandings often contain freshly ingested food in their stomachs and can provide a more reliable guide to feeding habits than other strandings. Food remains recovered from seven Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) consisted mainly of oceanic cephalopods, the most numerous being Taonius pavo, Histioteuthis sp., Mastigoteuthis schmidti and Octopoteuthis sicula.
