Abstract:
AbstractIn the summer of 1705, Spain was about to face civil war. In the eventuality of an Allied landing in Catalonia, the Crown was forced to divert resources to the Mediterranean front. Philip V needed troops, and he called the three estates of Navarre for Cortes. Navarre was a loyal territory, but it had its own political institutions –the Cortes and its permanent commission, the Diputación– and its own tax and juridical system –the Fuero General–. These particularities kept Navarre out of the gruelling Habsburg foreign policy. However, the situation was now different, and the Monarchy had to negotiate with the Cortes a servicio, in the form of regiments.

AbstractBackgroundTo estimate the overall annual incidence and age group distribution of eating disorders in a representative sample of adolescent female residents of Navarra, Spain.MethodsWe studied a representative sample of 2734 adolescent Navarran females between 13 and 22 years of age who were free of any eating disorder at the start of our study. Eighteen months into the study, we visited the established centers and the eating attitudes test (EAT-40) and eating disorder inventory (EDI) Questionnaires were administered to the entire study population. We obtained a final response of 92%. All adolescents whose EAT score was over 21 points and a randomized sample of those who scored 21 or below, were interviewed. Any person meeting the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) or eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) was considered a case.ResultsWe detected 90 new cases of eating disorders. Taking into consideration the randomly selected group whose EAT score was 21 points or below, we estimated the overall weighted incidence of eating disorders to be 4.8% (95% CI: 2.8–6.8), after 18 months of observation, in which EDNOS predominated with an incidence of 4.2% (95% CI: 2.0–6.3). The incidence of AN was 0.3% (95% CI: 0.2–0.5), while that of BN was also found to be 0.3% (95% CI: 0.2–0.5). The highest incidence was observed in the group of adolescents between 15 and 16 years of age.ConclusionsThe overall incidence of ED in a cohort of 2509 adolescents after 18 months of follow-up was 4.8% (95% CI: 2.8–6.8), with EDNOS outweighing the other diagnoses. The majority of new cases of eating disorders were diagnosed between ages 15 and 16.

Goizueta is a small town in northwestern Navarre, Spain, bordering Gipuzkoa. According to the most recent official figures, it has slightly over 800 inhabitants, about 95% of whom speak Basque (2001, Instituto de Estadística de Navarra). All inhabitants (except for young children) also speak Spanish. In the school system standard Basque and, to a lesser extent, Spanish are used. Older speakers (those born before 1970 or so) were educated exclusively in Spanish. The local Basque dialect, however, enjoys very high prestige among its speakers, and this is the linguistic variety that is most commonly used in everyday interaction within the town.

Abstract:
Introduction. Navarra has the highest incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer in Spain. The aim of this study was to review its management carried out by the Navarra's multidisciplinary Thyroid Disease Unit, from 1987 to 2003. Material and Methods. 325 patients were studied to find the incidence, prevalence, and prognostic factors. Statistical analysis comprised univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models for survival and tumor recurrence. Results. The average annual incidence was 3.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, with a final prevalence of 82.4 per 100,000. Regarding survival and recurrence, statistical significance was observed for stage IV, follicular carcinoma, capsular and prethyroid muscles invasion, and T4 group. Only survival was related to tumour size larger than 40 mm. Only recurrence was related to lymph node metastases and radioiodine dose higher than 100 mCi. Conclusions. Attendance of patients in a functional unit setting has allowed us to classify them into three risk groups.

Abstract:
IntroductionCough is a common symptom of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. However, objectively measuring its frequency and evolution is hindered by the lack of reliable and scalable monitoring systems. This can be overcome by newly developed artificial intelligence models that exploit the portability of smartphones. In the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, cough detection for respiratory disease syndromic surveillance represents a simple means for early outbreak detection and disease surveillance. In this protocol, we evaluate the ability of population-based digital cough surveillance to predict the incidence of respiratory diseases at population level in Navarra, Spain, while assessing individual determinants of uptake of these platforms. Methods and analysisParticipants in the Cendea de Cizur, Zizur Mayor or attending the local University of Navarra (Pamplona) will be invited to monitor their night-time cough using the smartphone app Hyfe Cough Tracker. Detected coughs will be aggregated in time and space. Incidence of COVID-19 and other diagnosed respiratory diseases within the participants cohort, and the study area and population will be collected from local health facilities and used to carry out an autoregressive moving average analysis on those independent time series. In a mixed-methods design, we will explore barriers and facilitators of continuous digital cough monitoring by evaluating participation patterns and sociodemographic characteristics. Participants will fill an acceptability questionnaire and a subgroup will participate in focus group discussions.Ethics and disseminationEthics approval was obtained from the ethics committee of the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal, Canada and the Medical Research Ethics Committee of Navarre, Spain. Preliminary findings will be shared with civil and health authorities and reported to individual participants. Results will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and international conferences.Trial registration numberNCT04762693.

AbstractObjectiveCohort study (the SUN project) to identify dietary determinants of hypertension, diabetes, obesity and coronary heart disease (CHD), among other conditions.DesignThe SUN project is a Mediterranean dynamic prospective follow-up (cohort) study assessing participants every 2 years. The recruitment started in 2000 and it is permanently open (this is a dynamic cohort). A preliminary case–control study of myocardial infarction was also conducted, selecting incident cases of myocardial infarction and matched hospital controls.SettingThe SUN study is conducted in Spain with university graduates, most of them being former students of the University of Navarra. The case–control study was conducted in three tertiary hospitals in the city of Pamplona (Spain).SubjectsThe case–control study included 171 cases and 171 controls. We have currently enrolled more than 17 500 participants in the SUN cohort. Approximately 7500 of them were enrolled less than 2 years ago, and have not received yet the invitation to complete the 2-year follow-up assessment. The follow-up rate for the first 10 000 participants approaches 90%.ResultsThe case–control study found inverse associations between olive oil (or adherence to a Mediterranean food pattern) and myocardial infarction. In the SUN cohort, after 28.5 months of follow-up a higher adherence to a Mediterranean food pattern rich in olive oil was associated with a reduced risk of hypertension, though the results were statistically significant only among men.ConclusionsThe SUN study and the accompanying case–control study support the benefits of a Mediterranean diet and olive oil against CHD and hypertension.

Abstract:
Lichens, as well as other organisms, should be considered important biodiversity components for the establishment of priorities in conservation biology. In this study, we report six new recent localities of the highly endangered, epiphytic macrolichen Pseudocyphellaria aurata in Spain: two in Navarra and four in A Coruña. Previous Spanish reports based on literature and herbarium specimens suggest a reduction of the distribution area of P. aurata and local extinction. Pseudocyphellaria aurata is known to be extinct in six localities, where it has not been observed since the middle of the 19th century (Cádiz, Pontevedra, Málaga). Four records reported for central Spain (Zaragoza, Salamanca, Teruel) are considered unplausible. The newly discovered populations are located in well-preserved patches of atlantic deciduous forest with strong oceanic influence, whose long-term ecological stability seems evident because of the presence of ancient trees. Nevertheless, these populations are small, fragmentary, and are threatened by habitat degradation, forestry and maybe fungal pathogens. Two populations, Intzola and Beba (Navarra and A Coruña, respectively), account for 75.7% of thalli. The localities with the highest number of trees colonized by P. aurata are Santa Leocadia and Beba in A Coruña. We reassessed the conservation status of this species concluding that conservation initiatives must be implemented to avoid its extinction in mainland Spain.

Abstract:
Apple scab, caused by the ascomycete Venturia inaequalis, is an important disease of apple (Malus domestica) worldwide and is generally managed with intensive applications of fungicides or, for specific markets, by planting of resistant cultivars. Currently, eight races of the pathogen have been defined on the basis of their ability to overcome sources of resistance used by plant breeders (2). We undertook the identification of apple scab races present in Spain as a necessary step for the deployment of resistant cultivars. Spore suspensions (2.5 × 105 spores per ml) were prepared from fresh lesions of apple scab collected from apple trees in commercial or domestic orchards located in the northeastern Spanish provinces of Gerona, Guipúzcoa, and Navarra. To identify races 1 to 7, the suspensions were used to inoculate cv. Gala and six differential apple clones with five replicates. Cultivar Gala was used as a universal susceptible control. The differential apple clones included X2250, X2253 (Geneva), X2249, X2225, X2596 (Prima), and X6518 (M. floribunda 821) (1,4). All leaves were assessed on each inoculated shoot 17 days after inoculation, and the type of symptoms were scored using the scale of Chevalier et al. (3). Sporulation was evaluated on seven replicate leaf discs (1 cm in diameter) for each combination of inoculum and plant host (4). All the inocula tested produced typical apple scab symptoms and sporulation (>106 conidia per cm2) on cv. Gala. Races 2, 3, 5, and 6 were identified on the basis of the elicitation of typical disease symptoms with abundant sporulation (>3 × 106 conidia per cm2) on clones X2250, X2253, X2225, and X2596, respectively. Races 2 and 6 were present in inocula from Gerona, Guipúzcoa, and Navarra, whereas races 3 and 5 were identified only in an inoculum from Tudela, Navarra. An inoculum from La Tallada, Gerona, was assigned to race 1 because it produced typical disease symptoms and sporulation only on cv. Gala, while the differential clones were scored as resistant. In Santesteban, Navarra, a monosporic isolate of V. inaequalis, designated VIP28, was obtained in the field from a single lesion in a 2-year-old tree of clone 2.1.1, which is resistant to race 1. VIP28 produced lesions typical of weak virulence in clone X6518 and produced a significant degree of sporulation (0.8 × 106 conidia per cm2), whereas the differential clones for races 2 to 6 were scored as resistant, indicating that this isolate can be classified as race 7 (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of races of V. inaequalis present in Spain. References: (1) G. Bénaouf and L. Parisi. Phytopathology 90:236, 2000. (2) V. G. M. Bus et al. Abstract:
SUMMARYTwo clusters of confirmed cryptosporidiosis infections were detected in Navarra, Spain, in the summer of 2012, in the context of an increased incidence in the region. Molecular subtyping of Cryptosporidium hominis determined that one cluster, occurring in an urban area, was due to the predominant circulating subtype IbA10G2R2 and the other cluster, with cases occurring in a rural area, was due to a rare subtype IaA18R3. No single exposure was associated with infection, although exposure to certain children's pools was reported by a majority of patients interviewed in each cluster. Genotyping tools were useful in the investigation and could aid investigation of cryptosporidiosis outbreaks in Spain in the future.

Abstract:

Aims: The aim of this paper is to study the anthocyanin profile of the monovarietal young red wines from the Appellation of Origin Navarra. Differentiation of wines according to age and grape variety (Tempranillo, Grenache and Cabernet-Sauvignon) was procured using the multivariate statistical methods.

Methods and results: The anthocyanin composition of wines was analysed by HPLC's technology. Then, the data were analysed statistically. In this way, principal component analysis and stepwise discriminant analysis classified correctly samples belonging to the same category. The anthocyanin 3-monoglucosides appeared as key factor in the differentiation of wines according to age. Largest relative concentrations in these anthocyanins were found in the youngest wines. In addition, a separation of wines according to variety is obtained in terms of their relative contents on the anthocyanin acetate derivatives.

Conclusion: A minimum number of anthocyanin compounds made classification of wines according to both age and grape variety possible in this work. Cabernet-Sauvignon is the variety that appeared to differ most from the rest, because it is the one that presents the major levels of the MvAc anthocyanin. The malvidin 3-monoglucoside was variable the highest discriminant power according to age. Using this variable exclusively, 80 % of correct classification was achieved.

Significance and impact of study:The importance of the anthocyanin compounds on the global quality of the young wine (1 or 2 years-old), has driven us to realize this work. It is important to know the evolution that these compounds suffer throughout the years in order to apply new technologies as for example the microoxygenation.

Abstract:
This article presents a study based on the outputs from the LUISA Territorial modelling platform (Joint Research Centre of the European Commission) focused on regional and local future projections of land abandonment between 2015 and 2030. Spain is taken as representative of one of the countries highly affected by agricultural land abandonment in the European Union. The most relevant factors driving land abandonment (biophysical, agroeconomics, farm structure and demographic) are described and mapped. Results from the analysis reveal that the Galicia region, northern Spain (Asturias, Cantabria, Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia), north-eastern Spain (Aragón region), central Pyrenees/Ebro basin (Huesca, Navarra, Lleida) and south-eastern Spain (Murcia, Almería, Alicante, Málaga) are expected to undergo important abandonment processes. The study also concludes that land abandonment within mountainous, high nature value farmland and Natura 2000 areas is lower compared to the outside area without conservation and protection measures.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveTo assess the association between the consumption of sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages (SSCB) and obesity in children and adolescents from Navarra (Spain).DesignWe used a matched case–control study design. The exposure, SSCB consumption (1 serving: 200 ml), was measured with a previously validated FFQ. Anthropometrical measures were taken using standardized protocols. The outcome, obesity, was defined as BMI above the age- and sex-specific 97th percentile according to the Spanish reference charts. In the analysis we used conditional logistic regression. Potential confounders were controlled using a multivariable model.SettingSubjects were recruited in the paediatric departments of the Universidad de Navarra Clinic and the Navarra Hospital Complex, and in three primary health centres of Navarra. Controls were recruited when attending for a routine medical examination or vaccination.SubjectsOne hundred and seventy-four obese children and 174 individually sex- and age-matched controls, 52·87 % boys, with a mean age of 11·6 years. Exclusion criteria were dietary interventions, exposure to hormone treatment, development of secondary obesity due to endocrinopathy and serious intercurrent illness.ResultsIndependently of other factors, high consumption of SSCB (>4 servings/week) was significantly associated with obesity (OR = 3·46; 95 % CI 1·24, 9·62; P = 0·01). Besides, each additional daily serving of SSCB was associated with a 69 % relative increase in the risk of obesity (OR = 1·69; 95 % CI 1·04, 2·73; P = 0·03).ConclusionsWe found a strong and significant association between SSCB consumption and obesity risk. Our results suggest a monotonic dose–response linear shape for this association in children and adolescents (P for trend = 0·02).

AbstractLecania chlorotiza and L. falcata, described here as new from Spain/Navarra, the Canary Islands and the Azores, do not belong to Lecania s. str. They belong to a strongly supported clade comprising Bacidia, Bacidina, Scutula and Toninia when examined with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences using mtSSU, nuLSU and nuITS sequences. This clade represents the Bacidiaceae and is included in the Ramalinaceae s. lat. Most genera included in that family need further work before a new genus can possibly be described for Lecania chlorotiza and L. falcata.

Abstract:
Aim of study: The globally invasive gall wasp, Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu, 1951 (Cynipidae: Cynipini), reached Spain seven years ago and is already regarded as an important pest of chestnuts (Castanea spp.) in this country as well as worldwide. In this paper, we present comprehensive data on the establishment in Spain of Torymus sinensis Kamijo, 1982 (Chalcidoidea: Torymidae), an effective non-native natural enemy of this pest, as a result of both natural dispersal and settlement after controlled releases since 2015.Area of study: Sites of the Spanish autonomous communities of Galicia, Asturias, Basque Country, Catalonia, Andalusia and Madrid where D. kuriphilus is present.Material and methods: To study the natural dispersal of T. sinensis from France, we selected two sampling sites in Catalonia, six in the Basque Country and two in Navarra known for their heavy Asian chestnut gall wasp (ACGW) infestation; to study T. sinensis establishment after authorized controlled releases by the concerned authorities, the field samplings were done mainly in Galicia (35 sites) and Andalusia (8 sites). Additionally an experimental release study was made in Madrid.Main Results: Our results showed that T. sinensis has spread throughout Spain by natural dispersal across the French border and now occurs in Catalonia (two sites), the Basque Country (three sites) and Navarra (one site) but not in the neighbouring region of Cantabria. The percentage of parasitism by T. sinensis on D. kuriphilus is higher in the Basque Country sites, which are close to the French border, thus indicating that its establishment in these localities is not recent. After controlled releases, T. sinensis has been successfully established in five release sites in Andalusia (Valle del Genal and Sierra Blanca, Málaga Province) and one release site in Madrid. However, in the region of Galicia (NW Spain), where the number of authorized releases has been higher, the establishment of T. sinensis still appears to be very low.Research highlights: Established populations of T. sinensis may exert a positive buffer against D. kuriphilus-driven chestnut infestation in Spain, similar to what is observed in other invaded European countries.Additional Keywords: Controlled releases, Torymidae, invasive species, Cynipidae, natural spread, biological control.Abbreviations used: Asian chestnut gall wasp (ACGW); Torymus sinensis parasitism rate (TsPR); mean of ACGW larval chambers per gall (MACGW).

Abstract:
The susceptibility of 440 Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from food (n = 401) and clinical cases (n = 39) between 1995 and 2005 was determined by standard agar dilution and E-test methods. Antimicrobial drugs currently used in veterinary and human therapy were tested, and they included penicillin G, ampicillin, cephalothin, gentamicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, doxycycline, trimethoprim, erythromycin, and clindamycin. The sensitivity of strains was established using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (formerly NCCLS) breakpoints and MIC50 (the MIC for 50% of the strains) to MIC90 values. In general, isolates were susceptible to the majority of the antimicrobials tested, including β-lactamics and aminoglycosides, which are normally used in the treatment of listeriosis. Resistance to tetracycline and doxycycline was found in five strains isolated from fresh trout belonging to the same fish farm. Molecular analysis by restriction endonuclease analysis showed a similar profile, suggesting the persistence of a strain well adapted to the presence of tetracycline in the environment of a fish farm, which is frequently used in aquaculture in order to prevent infections of fish.
