The purpose of this essay is to explore the competitiveness analysis of the current notebook computer manufacturing industry and NB ODM/OEM’s transformation strategy when facing the new era of Personal Computing industry. Current notebook computer ODM OEM manufacturers are suffering from low growth rate and less and less profit. Therefore, how to cope with this low profit situation and reduce the impact of economic change? This new PC era has brought some potential opportunities (real networking, and cloud commodity, VR (Virtual Reality), Industry 4.0 and so on) to PC industry. However, industry think that "this subject is an important industry category, and industry currently is preparing for changes. In addition, industry will observe the market trend to adjust the strategy from time to time. The point is: industry will make sure the planning and technology are ready and the market has the demand first. From the respond from PC industry management we can know that this new PC industry in under the specification integration stage and this category is one of the areas that NB ODM is planning to step in. This essay will using five force analysis, and diamond type theory, industry vertical integration, and the SWOT analysis, to explore the current notebook computer industry status and the strategy, and analyze the new PC era industry. We expect through this research, we can provide more directions to NB ODMs for operating and strategy for strategy transformation. Under this high-speed growth world and the poor NB/PC environment, PC ODMs need to increase not only the competition of own advantages to provide more value added services, but also adjust the product mix ratio and step in non-NB field. Through a variety of business strategies, NB ODM/OEMs expects to re-gain growths from product diversification as well as more profits. Moreover, this industry will develop and sustainable management in order to respond to technological and scientific challenges posed by rapid changes.

Considering the obvious impact of the concentration and low profit rate of PC industry these years, the ODM of Taiwan NB took corporate strategic investment way to achieve the goal of exterior extension and continual growth. This research stood at the point of view of enterprise growth, and wishes to analysis the key elements of the strategic investment from the NB ODM manufacturers by using the model of 3 horizons of enterprise growth and diversification. This purpose of research examined the way and relationship of corporate strategic investments in horizons with 69 questionnaire surveys and the Chi- square and ANOVA statistic test. To be growth-sustaining companies, this research reveals that M&A and dominant joint venture were the majority to apply on vertical integration and related diversification investment for extending and defending their NB core business; meanwhile, the NB ODM got around the tough competition from market, related and conglomerate diversification investment applied to innovate in emerging business and create viable option. Considering the synergy and resources, the key elements of the strategic investment are managing by horizons, selecting proper investment activities, organizing to execute and evaluate excellently by a designated unit.

Abstract When facing the economic structure changed by the revolution of market, technology, management, enterprises have to seek the feasible plans to obtain competitive advantage. Enterprise’s focus on pursuing the internal operating performance has been diverted to the integral efficiency of external relationships and the competition among supply chains. This change of businesses model will be come along with strategic investment decision (SID). Consequently, the evaluation tools of supply chain SID will be the necessary. From the CAPS report, the strategic cost management (SCM) as one of the focal key initiatives of supply chain will be still more essential and important in the coming decade. However, there's no case happened in Taiwan yet to verify if it’s suitable for enterprise’s supply chain SID or not. This is why SCM is worth to probe into our national electronics industry, especially for notebook OEM which recently creates new low gross profit rate in history. This research is based on single case study. Also, triangulation is used to check the multiple sources of evidence. Here below is the study conclusion: (1).Based on this case, comparing to the strategic tools, the SCM would provide more elasticity. (2).The elements of SCM have been implied into the consideration without systematized format, although the firm did not use SCM in this case study. (3).The SCM is suitable for supply chain SID of Taiwan notebook OEM. (4).However, Lord's (1996) criticism of SCM not being necessary can't be refuted in this case, even as Carr & Tomkins (1996) mentioned it’s useful to strategic linkages and effective integration with techniques of capital budgeting. (5).As a top notebook manufacturer and a pioneer company of e-Business, the firm’s strategy and execution in this case are worth to be a reference to other industries and SME in Taiwan.

New product development process is very important to the operation of the mechanism for enterprises. It’s caused many problems during the process. In this study, NB industry in a different mode of operation of OBM and ODM, according to new product development process is divided into five stages. It’s various stages of the process of the technical problems, at the same time depending on the operating mode of interference variables, and refers to role in co-operation impact on new product development. In this study, case studies were selected to OBM and ODM of the six cases, the conclusion as follows:: 1. New product development process at different stages, not faced the same technical problems. 2. A simple assembly processing mode is no longer lasting for Taiwan manufacturing industry. Due to pricing dominance, Taiwan NB manufacturers have gradually transformed to be providers having both of ODM and OBM business modes. With the rapidly innovated progress of advanced technology, NB product is getting a shorter life cycle in the more and more mature NB market. Only by adopting manufacture service concept into NPD procedure can the enterprise introduce differentiated products when facing a variety of fierce competition of industry globalization. Therefore, integrating manufacture service project into NPD activity causes a lot of conflict types from different task goals, different recognitions, different procedures, and different interest among project crews and stakeholders. However, the study focuses on what the roles PM shall act to help enterprise popping out of the bygone thinking frame, coordinate internal organization resources reducing the conflict of integrating MSP into NPD process. The research, by means of two business types, carries out 6 cases of deep interview to analyze the effect of PM roles in the face of conflict. From the study results, PM is in the face of no procedure conflict, under ODM business type, but mostly acts “disseminator” in the face of the goal conflict, mostly does “communicator” in the face of the cognitive conflict and interests conflict. Under OBM own brand business type, PM needs to act 4 multiple roles as “controller”, “disseminator”, “communicator”, and “negotiator” when facing the goal conflict, mostly does “communicator” and “negotiator” when facing the cognitive conflict, mostly does as “negotiator” when facing the procedure conflict and mostly does 4 multiple roles as “liaison”, “controller”, “disseminator” and “allocator” when facing interests conflict.

In recent years, laptop ODM has been a mature industry, there is a high demand was accompanied by lower gross margin. In a highly competitive environment, taking into account the quality of the premise, the major foundries did not dare to get a better price to the ODM domain, and therefore manufacturing overhead control impact on company profitability. Each laptop ODM must focus on the issue. Therefore, effective solutions to production problems, can produce more fluid, also reduced the waste of non-productive hours. In this study, to apply TRIZ approach, through actual case, the CTO mode production interrupted caused by materials part number maintenance issue, and resulting in production losses. And because of the lack of production space and the space cannot be expanded, resulting in materials replenishment operator always be more focus on demand for material on order to reduce production losses. To apply TRIZ method to solve the issue, developing a solution to fulfill the materials location requirement under the limited space.

In order to minimize the gap of the eastern and western region of mainland China, Chinese Government implements the “China Western Development plan”, planning to move some manufacturing industry chain which located in the nearing of China coastal region to the western region. Pulling the NB industry clusters to Chongqing and Chengdu, Sichuan Province to set up factories aggressively. Chongqing and Chengdu, Sichuan Province are going all out to fight, hoping to become the leading position of the NB industry chain, internal fight for resources, external positive investment. Those NB brands divided to two parts, Hewlett-Packard (HP), acer, Asus selected Chongqing to set up factories; Lenovo, Dell chose Chengdu, and request those NB ODM to fully cooperate with them. Those NB ODM, originally hold a wait-and-see attitude on the setting up factories into Western, however, in the coastal lack of workers, rising wages and land prices even the expansion of land required under the difficulty of obtaining, which including many NB supply chain manufacturers in the Yangtze River Delta and other coastal areas encountered by the local government refuse the issuance of business license in the environmental assessment problem not pass, and then turned to find manufacturing base in the Western, NB ODM to rethink the feasibility of the west to set up factories. With the announcement of Hewlett-Packard (HP) Computer settled in Chongqing in 2009, the NB ODM have settled, including Foxconn, Company A, Inventec, and Pegatron, Wistron and Compal the first six who getting more than 90% of the NB production orders foundries, has entered the Chongqing to set up factories. Successful investment in Chongqing, thanks to the policy of not small help, including Chongqing is a comprehensive cross-strait cooperation in advance before the test area, with direct flights, MTPs visas on arrival, the advantage of cross-border trade in RMB clearing pilot; of which, Taiwan-funded enterprises to the West Wing Free Trade Zone investment, but also enjoy state subsidies of 10 years and 15% income tax for export tax rebates and the same time of declaration which attracted a lot of Taiwanese firms. In addition to the advantage of the investment environment, and Chongqing new European railway, a container from Chongqing to Duisburg (Duisburg, Germany) about 21 days, compared with the original via the sea shipment takes 45 days, can significantly reduce time and cost of transportation. In this study, taking Company A as an example and refering to Kotler (2010) international marketing decision-making mode, analyze those Taiwanese why motivated for the western region of the mainland invest and set up a major consideration from the evaluation and selection of locations to set up factories by the enter mode; and using Seetoo,Dah Hsian (2001) who raised in his strategic management "Industry matrix " as an industry strategy. To the six dimensions of strategic environmental consideration, the 55 elements of an objective analysis of the company A of their own resources and risk-oriented, the current environment, re-view, and then proposed the vision of the company''s future business planning. Through comprehensive literature review and case study results of this study, make the following conclusions: 1.NB ODM industrial transfer, and further promote the steady westward. (2) With the West into supporting selective vertical integration, has continued to improve competitive advantage. (3) Global operations requirements of NB ODM to reduce inventory risk and preparedness information pressure. And put forward the following suggestions of the study: First, the government side: 1. Taiwan government: (1) maintenance of all open-door policy. (2) Only monitoring of revenue and profits on the mainland must be merged with the parent company in Taiwan. 2. Western China''s Government: (1) continuing the tax, fee concessions. (2)A more flexible opening working capital operating limits. (3) Logistics system of the western region continued to improve. Second, the client: by the West into and thinking about industrial differentiation upgrade planning and existence of innovative products and services carried out to enhance the added value. Third, the corporate side: The main purpose of the west to set up factories in considering the future "to enter the Chinese market development" rather than still the old and same purpose of “looking China as a factory only ".
