Abstract:
We report a theoretical study on molecular structure, vibrational spectra, nonlinear optical (NLO), and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of sarcosine-maleic acid (C7H11NO6) in the ground state calculated by using the Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional method (DFT/B3LYP) with 6–31++G(d,p) basis set. We repeat NBO calculations with 6–31G(d,p) basis set so as to see the diffuse function impact on NBO analysis. Stability of the molecule arising from hyper conjugative interactions and charge delocalization has been analyzed using NBO analysis. NBO analysis shows that there is a O–H⋯O and N–H⋯O hydrogen bond in the title compound, which is consistent with the conclusion obtained by the analysis of molecular structure. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies show that charge transfer occurs within the molecule. Also, these results are supported by the NLO parameters. Finally, the calculated results were applied to simulate infrared and Raman spectra of the title compound which showed good agreement with experimental ones.

Abstract:
Four metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are being evaluated as possible catalysts for alkaline lignin oxidation. One aspect of the screening process is the oxidation of in-situ hardwood lignin by a high mole ratio of Cu, Fe, or Cu + Fe contained in the MOFs. The MOF’s were prepared in a microwave-assisted synthesis. One of the MOFs, a benzenetricar-boxylic acid complex of Cu (II) and Fe (III), converted the phenylpropane (C9) units in in-situ poplar lignin to approximately 50% monomers. The ratio of syringyl (S) to guiacyl (G) monomers was similar to the S:G ratio obtained from nitrobenzene oxidation (NBO). The S:G ratio from NBO was then compared to that from MOF oxidation (MOFO) for two other poplars. The S:G ratios for the three poplars by MOFO were 1.20, 1.51 and 1.67, respectively while the corresponding NBO values were 1.25, 1.45 and 1.68. These initial results indicate that MOFO could be developed into a credible replacement for NBO, because it affords a higher yield of monomers when a large MOF dose is used. Some preliminary results are also presented for MOF acting as a catalyst (100 ppm Cu (II) plus 81 ppm Fe (III) in NaOH) for oxygenation of the hardwoods. The products from O2 + MOF are identical to MOF only, but the ratios amongst them are different.

The reaction of oxalic precursor {(NH4)3[NbO(C2O4)3]H2O}, was prepared from the Nb2O5, to niobium carbide (NbC) were performed in a rotating cylinder reactor scale-lab designed to niobium carbide powders synthesis at low temperature (1173 K). The NbC was prepared by a oxalic precursor and as well of commercial niobium pentoxide under flowing CH4- H2 mixtures. The reactor was heated through a bi-partied electric furnace with programmable temperature. The reaction overall time was determined from the curve of methane absorption evolution by gas chromatograph (FID) analysis. The preliminary results showed that the conversion function depends on the rotation, temperature, mixture flow, CH4/H2 ratio and heating rate. The niobium carbide was characterized through X-ray diffraction and compared to the commercial products. The reaction of oxalic precursor {(NH4)3[NbO(C2O4)3]H2O} to niobium carbide (NbC) in 3% (v/v) CH4/H2 yielded smallest grain size as well smaller overall time when compared with obtained direct by commercial Nb2O5, however it had small mass conversion due the solid carryover not controlled.

Abstract:
The structure of silica-based glasses consists on a disrupted network of SiO4 tetrahedra where network modifiers generate non-bridging oxygen groups (NBO), that play an important role at the initial steps of the bioactive process. Infrared spectroscopy is a sensitive technique to the presence of NBO groups and glass local structure modifications. The infrared study has been complemented with a theoretical approach using the Y Stevels parameter. Moreover, the in vitro bioactivity of the glasses as a function of Y Stevels paremeter has been studied, which can be a finding of a predictive tool for bioactivity of glasses.

Abstract:
AbstractA modified alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation (NBO) method was developed to enable the analysis of the biphenyl structures of cedar wood lignin. The most essential point of the process is a modified work-up process in pyridine and a prolonged gas chromatography analysis of the silylated products. By applying this mean to cedar wood meal, a novel biphenyl product, dehydrovanillin-vanillic acid (1-carboxy-1′-formyl-4,4′-dihydroxy-3,3′-dimethoxy-5,5′-biphenyl), was detected together with known products, dehydrodivanillin and dehydrodivanillic acid. The highest total yield of biphenyl products was detected when NBO was carried out for 2–4 h at 170°C. The work-up procedure was slightly modified so that the biphenyl products can be quantified. The NBO conversion rates of biphenyl linkages of lignin were also examined with a biphenyl-type lignin model compound, and this gave rise to 75% biphenyl-type NBO degradation products. Under the same condition, the total yield of vanillin and vanillic acid (VA) from a non-condensed-type β-O-4 model compound was 89%. Because the latter did not exhibit any peak of the biphenyl products, it can be concluded that all the biphenyl products obtained by NBO (0.17 mmol g-1) were from the lignin of the native wood. It was calculated that at least 6.7 of 100 phenylpropanoid units of cedar lignin were involved in biphenyl structures even if the NBO conversion rate was not taken into consideration. The synthesis and analytical data of 11 lignin model compounds is described.

Abstract:
Background. Currently, both clavicular bacterial osteomyelitis (BO) and nonbacterial osteitis (NBO) remain not well understood owing to their much lower incidences. This study is aimed at summarizing similarities and differences between clavicular BO and NBO based on comparisons of literature-reported cases. Methods. We searched the PubMed and Embase databases to identify English published literature between January 1st, 1980, and December 31st, 2018. Inclusion criteria were studies evaluating clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of clavicular BO and NBO, with eligible data for synthesis analysis. Results. Altogether, 129 studies with 327 patients were included. Compared with BO, clavicular NBO favored females (P<0.001) and age below 20 years (P<0.001) and mostly presented in a chronic phase (disease term exceeding 2 months) (P<0.001). Although local pain and swelling were the top two symptoms for both disorders, fever, erythema, and a sinus tract were more frequently found in BO patients (P<0.01). Although they both favored the medial side, lesions in the clavicular lateral side mostly occurred in BO patients (P=0.002). However, no significant differences were identified regarding the serological levels of white blood cell count (P=0.06), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (P=0.27), or C-reactive protein (P=0.33) between BO and NBO patients before therapy. Overall, the BO patients achieved a statistically higher cure rate than that of the NBO patients (P=0.018). Conclusions. Females, age below 20 years, and a long duration of clavicular pain and swelling may imply NBO. While the occurrence of a sinus tract and lesions in the lateral side may be clues of BO, inflammatory biomarkers revealed limited values for differential diagnosis. BO patients could achieve a better efficacy than the NBO patients based on current evidence.

Thetechniques used were computational calculations and nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. The study made it possible to verify the conformational preference of each compound, determined by their energies and geometries, which were evaluated both for the isolated molecule, at distinct theory levels, and in different solvents, with the IEF-PCM solvation model. By using natural bond orbital calculations, it was possible to identify the main orbital interactions for each conformation. With the total deletion calculations, it was verified that there was a balance between the steric and hyperconjugative effects in the stabilization of the most stable structures. The majority conformers of halogenated compounds in ortho revealed the same spatial orientation between the carbonyl and the benzene ring, similar to that of the phenylacetic acid. In the derivatives, nitro and hydroxylated in ortho, there was the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond, but in none of these cases the interaction referred to one of the main conformers. The infrared experiments in solvents of different polarities, allowed the identification of more than one band, enabling the attribution of conformers present in the equilibrium as well as the observation of the same tendency as the one obtained theoretically. The coupling constant 1JCH was evaluated through nuclear magnetic resonance. No significant variation of this constant was observed, showing that the major contribution to the equilibrium is related to the majoritarian conformer, which prevails even with the change in the polarity of the medium, for each compound under evaluation.<br>Neste trabalho foi apresentado uma análise teórica e experimental do equilíbrio conformacional do ácido fenilacético e seus derivados, sendo eles: ofluorofenilacético, o-clorofenilacético, o-bromofenilacético, o-nitrofenilacético, ohidróxifenilacético, m-fluorofenilacético, p-fluorofenilacético, p-nitrofenilacético, phidróxifenilacético,p-mercaptofenilacético e p-aminofenilacético.

Abstract:
<p> In the static analysis of functional programs, control-flow analysis (&kappa;-CFA) is a classic method of approximating program behavior as a finite state automata. CFA2 and abstract garbage collection are two recent, yet orthogonal improvements, on &kappa;-CFA. CFA2 approximates program behavior as a pushdown system, using summarization for the stack. CFA2 can accurately approximate arbitrarily-deep recursive function calls, whereas &kappa;-CFA cannot. Abstract garbage collection removes unreachable values from the store/heap. If unreachable values are not removed from a static analysis, they can become reachable again, which pollutes the final analysis and makes it less precise. Unfortunately, as these two techniques were originally formulated, they are incompatible. CFA2's summarization technique for managing the stack obscures the stack such that abstract garbage collection is unable to examine the stack for reachable values.</p><p> This dissertation presents introspective pushdown control-flow analysis, which manages the stack explicitly through stack changes (pushes and pops). Because this analysis is able to examine the stack by how it has changed, abstract garbage collection is able to examine the stack for reachable values. Thus, introspective pushdown control-flow analysis merges successfully the benefits of CFA2 and abstract garbage collection to create a more precise static analysis.</p><p> Additionally, the high-performance computing community has viewed functional programming techniques and tools as lacking the efficiency necessary for their applications. Nebo is a declarative domain-specific language embedded in C++ for discretizing partial differential equations for transport phenomena. For efficient execution, Nebo exploits a version of expression templates, based on the C++ template system, which is a type-less, completely-pure, Turing-complete functional language with burdensome syntax. Nebo's declarative syntax supports functional tools, such as point-wise lifting of complex expressions and functional composition of stencil operators. Nebo's primary abstraction is mathematical assignment, which separates what a calculation does from how that calculation is executed. Currently Nebo supports single-core execution, multicore (thread-based) parallel execution, and GPU execution. With single-core execution, Nebo performs on par with the loops and code that it replaces in Wasatch, a pre-existing high-performance simulation project. With multicore (thread-based) execution, Nebo can linearly scale (with roughly 90% efficiency) up to 6 processors, compared to its single-core execution. Moreover, Nebo's GPU execution can be up to 37x faster than its single-core execution. Finally, Wasatch (the pre-existing high-performance simulation project which uses Nebo) can scale up to 262K cores.</p>

Abstract:
During the past decade, there has been a growing disgust in Thailand with opposition to eating dogs in Asia and activists have unitedly with organizations encouraged the Thai government to adopt stricter animal rights laws in order to prevent the illegal dog meat trade. One of these organizations is the Thai animal welfare organization Soi Dog Foundation (SDF), that has also contributed with a controlled dog population on the Thai island Phuket and officially made it the first rabies free province in Thailand. Since SDF is solely volunteer and donations based it becomes relevant to examine the reasons behind their success as a non-governmental and nonprofit organization in a third world country. The thesis’s speculations regarding SDF’s historical development aims to help SDF and other NGOs in Asia that share the same goals streamline their marketing. This paper is a bachelor’s thesis including a minor field study in Thailand. It is a qualitative study with empirical observation and participation that analyzes SDF’s social marketing strategies. The study also includes a multimodal analysis of the focus organization’s materials fighting the illegal dog-meat trade and smuggling. The chosen materials are published during the beginning and end of the recent decade and are examined in order to determine which semiotic and multimodal tools they have used throughout this time period to spread awareness of the phenomenon. It is also examined whether SDF composes their texts and structures their materials differently depending on the target group. The research questions are answered with the help of semiotics and analytical tools from the systematic-functional grammar method. It will be briefly analyzed whether SDF attempts to build emotional appeals into their materials with the help of a model called ‘emotional branding’. The thesis’s approach to the analysis of SDF’s communication planning is based on the contingency approach, which implies that it takes variating methods in order to achieve a goal. The Four C’s model will be used in this study when discussing strategies NGOs can use to cooperate or create the desired relationship with their nation’s government. The agenda setting theory is implemented in order to examine SDF’s social marketing strategies. The results of this thesis show that SDF has adapted their materials to the ideal layout structures in modern time throughout the decade and frequently adapts them to their culturally variating target groups. The analysis also displays that the organization uses multiple strategies consisting of multiple minor steps in order to reach a certain goal. Results imply that SDF and other NGOs should focus on social media and their relation to the public, in order to eventually affect the majority public opinion and influence the government laws regarding animal rights.

Abstract:
Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2014.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 55-56).<br>Basketball is a team game, and an important task for coaches is analyzing the effectiveness of various offensive plays. Currently, teams spend a great deal of time examining video of past games. If teams could automatically classify plays, they could more effectively analyze their own plays and scout their opponents. In this thesis, we develop a methodology to help automatically classify a set of NBA plays using data from the SportVU optical tracking system, which tracks the position of each player and the ball 25 times per second. The problem is made challenging by the variations in how a play is run, the high proportion of possessions where no set play is run, the variance in length of plays, and the difficulty of acquiring a large number of labeled plays. We develop a framework for classifying plays using supervised machine learning. In our approach, we incorporate a novel sliding block algorithm that improves our classifier by accounting for the difference in play lengths. We also use a variant of the traditional one vs. all multi-class SVM. This approach is well suited to distinguish labeled plays from free motion and unlabeled plays. This thesis demonstrates that we can use SportVU data to automatically differentiate plays. We selected a total of six plays to classify, where each play had at least 20 labeled instances. We also added a large selection of plays that were not one of these six and labeled them as Other. Our framework correctly predicted the play with an accuracy of 72.6% and an F-score of .727. We also propose a framework, based on our engineered features, to extend our research to unlabeled plays.<br>by Mitchell Kates.<br>M. Eng.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates which factors that affect the salary for basketball players in the NBA and if the salary cap has achieved its purpose. The data for this project was collected from basketball-reference.com and consisted of performance measures from season 2015/2016 and salaries from the beginning of the season 2016/2017. The study was performed by using multiple linear regression analysis in the software R and the data was handled in Excel. The results from the regression indicates that position point guard, if the player has played in D-league or not,Age, Offensive rebounds, Assists, Steals, Two point attempts, Three point attempts, Free throw attempts, Field goal percentage, Usage percentage and Defensive rating are the main factors that affect the salary. The performance measures that had the greatest were two and three point attempts. The regression model achieved an explanatory level of 57:4%. In complementary to analyze if the salary cap has achieved its purpose, a literature analysis was used and showed that the salary cap systems in North America are neither accurately designed nor do they satisfy the intentions of what they were set to achieve.<br>Denna rapport undersöker vilka prestationsfaktorer som påverkar lönen för basketspelare i NBA och om NBA’s salary cap (lönetak) har uppnått sitt syfte.

Lakkis, Ramy A. "Arab regional integration : a neo-functionalist and transactionalist analysis." Thesis, Durham University, 2003. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3651/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a multidisciplinary analysis of Arab regional integration using the neo- functionalist and transactionalist approaches to integration. Neo-functionalism analyses the process of integration in the Arab World by studying the role of regional institutions including the league of Arab States and three Arab joint ventures. The transactionalist approach examines the impact of regional trade on political and economic integration in the Arab Mashreq. The analysis of the Arab joint ventures is taken further by using elements of business and finance theories. It is conducted on two different levels: the first analyses the operational and financial performance of these ventures. The second examines their role in promoting regional integration especially in the sectors concerned. The analysis is intended to find out whether these ventures were commercially viable or were more politically inspired. Qualitative information was collected from conducting constructive interviews with Arab economists, politicians and managers of the Arab joint ventures examined. The quantitative data was collected from recognisable resources including the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia and the Arab Monetary Fund. The problems encountered in this thesis resulted from the application of these theoretical approaches to integration, which are designed to study integration in politically developed societies with more advanced economies. However, the choice is justified since there are no alternatives. Secondly, the data on trade and Arab joint ventures may not be completely accurate since it does not record all transactions. The thesis concludes the following: at the political level, regional institutions did not promote Arab integration since they lacked aspects of supranationality and collective decision-making processes. Also, they did not affect the Arab elite's attitudes and could not initiate a viable process of integration that would spill over from one sector to another. At the economic level, the low level of regional trade in the Arab Mashreq did not prevent the occurrence of many attempts at Arab integration. Moreover, the Arab joint ventures were more politically inspired than commercially. Although they were more resilient to economic and political instability in the Arab World, their role in promoting regional integration was limited.

Abstract:
The National Basketball Association (NBA) generated well over $4 billion in revenues during the 2014-15 season. I analyze the value of a win to a team in terms of revenue and examine the potential underpayment or overpayment of players and superstars throughout the league relative to their marginal revenue product (MRP). My findings suggest that players are overpaid, especially superstars. However, it is important to consider the fixed-revenue streams a team receives before assuming a player is simply overpaid compared to his MRP. In congruence with previous literature, I find that veterans are overpaid at the expense of younger players’ lower salaries. I also look at the drivers of a player’s salary and find that general managers tend to overpay for points relative to other statistics.

Abstract:
Abstract In order to better understand the behavior of films formed during corrosion processes, an analytical technique using x-ray diffraction was developed to examine the structure of metal in closest proximity to the metal / liquid interface. The in-situ structure at the metal liquid interface was examined for pure nickel in KOH solution at room temperature at potentiostatically controlled potentials of -800 mV and +450 mV (versus Ni/NiO). The chemical changes at the metal interface were studied over a period of 48 hours. It was found that after a continued application of the potential over 72 hours, the nickel foil was perforated and the testing has to be stopped. The x-ray diffraction results for pure nickel in KOH indicated that the structure of both the inner and the outer oxide layers, at -800 mV (versus Ni/NiO), comprises both Ni(OH)2 and NiOOH. Similarly, the structure of the interfaces at +450 mV (versus Ni/NiO) contains both NiO and Ni2O3 and Ni(OH)2. XPS analysis of the surface structure (primarily of the outer layer) suggests that at -800 mV (versus Ni/NiO) the structure consists of Ni(OH)2. The structure at +450 mV (versus Ni/NiO) consists of NiO and Ni(OH)2. It is therefore, possible that the structure of inner layer may be NiOOH at -800 mV and Ni2O3 at +450 mV.

Goldak, J. L51647 Welding on Fluid Filled and Pressurized Pipelines-Transient 3D Analysis. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011356.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this project was to determine if research in Computational Weld Mechanics had matured to the stage where it could simulate the process of welding on a pressurized pipeline and provide useful estimates of the risk of burn-through. To achieve that objective we have compared the results of our FEM analyzes of several welds with the experimental data reported in "http://www.prci.com/publications/L51763.htm" PR-185-9515, Repair of Pipelines by Direct Deposition of Weld Metal: Further Studies. The temperature and deformation predicted by our FEM analysis agrees quite well with the experimental data. The critical input data in addition to the internal pressure in the pipe, the geometry of the pipe, the size and shape of the weld pool including weld reinforcement, are the convection coefficient on the internal pipe surface and the temperature dependence of the viscosity of the pipe metal. Our FEM analysis shows that creep under the weld pool can thin the pipe wall and form a groove. In welds that show significant groove formation and thus high risk of burn through, this groove is significantly deeper than in welds that are at low risk of burn-through. When the pipe wall is thinned by the groove, the internal pipe wall temperature increases under the weld pool. Also the groove could reduce the convection on the internal pipe wall. This would further increase the temperature on the internal pipe wall under the weld pool and further accelerate actual burn-through. In our FEM analysis, we found no significant groove formation in those welds for which no significant groove formation was reported in the PR-185-9515 experiments. We found significant groove formation exactly in those welds that burned-through or were at high risk of burn-through. In those welds, the FEM analyses predicted a somewhat deeper groove than experiment. This suggests the FEM analyses erred on the safe side. In this sense, we conclude that we have succeeded in computing useful estimates of the risk of burn-through using Computational Weld Mechanics. It is notable that almost no use is made of adjustable or tuning parameters. To simulate the actual burn-through we conjecture that we would need to include inertial forces in the stress analysis.

Wraight, Sarah, Julia Hofmann, Justine Allpress, and Brooks Depro. Environmental justice concerns and the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline route in North Carolina. RTI Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2018.mr.0037.1803.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes publicly available data sets and quantitative analysis that local communities can use to evaluate environmental justice concerns associated with pipeline projects. We applied these data and analytical methods to two counties in North Carolina (Northampton and Robeson counties) that would be affected by the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP). We compared demographic and vulnerability characteristics of census blocks, census block groups, and census tracts that lie within 1 mile of the proposed pipeline route with corresponding census geographies that lie outside of the 1-mile zone. Finally, we present results of a county-level analysis of race and ethnicity data for the entire North Carolina segment of the proposed ACP route. Statistical analyses of race and ethnicity data (US Census Bureau) and Social Vulnerability Index scores (University of South Carolina’s Hazards &amp; Vulnerability Research Institute) yielded evidence of significant differences between the areas crossed by the pipeline and reference geographies. No significant differences were found in our analyses of household income and cancer risk data.

Full text
Abstract:
This document provides the generic methodology and specific resource access points to conduct a freedom-to-operate (FtO) analysis tailored to the needs of a drug repurposing project. It has been compiled based on the extensive experience the author has accumulated with many projects of this type. Its most valuable feature is that it can be executed with minimal technical resources (only web access is required) and can be conducted internally up to the point where potentially critical findings (if any) are discussed with a patent attorney. When conducted properly this method actually improves the relevance of the analysis because no patent attorney can be expected to be fully familiar with all scientific aspects of a repurposing project. Despite its simplicity it integrates easily into the REPO4EU drug repurposing platform as a module that draws mostly on internal resources, and involves minimal expenses. While patent searches form the dominant motive, we also discuss how suitable suppliers can be recruited, an issue that is particularly important when the active ingredient is reformulated (as mostly will be the case).

Savidge. L52322 Effects of Methanol on Gas Measurement. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010057.

Full text
Abstract:
Upstream natural gas and related fluid operations often require the injection of methanol to prevent flow line constrictions and blockages caused by water and natural gas hydrates. Both the constrictions and methanol have a significant impact on measurement accuracy. Natural gas chromatographic analysis and related measurement practices do not account for constrictions or methanol in natural gas streams. API 14.2, A.G.A. Report No.8, A.G.A. Report No.10, ISO 12213, ISO 20765 and GPA 2172 do not account for methanol. Measurement and operation practices rely on accurate information to reduce errors. This report analyzes the effect of methanol on gas measurement physical properties. It establishes the relative effect of methanol on the physical properties by applying the Gas Research Institute's high accuracy equation of state for natural gases as distributed by API, A.G.A, ISO and others as API MPMS Chapter 14.2, A.G.A. Report No.8, A.G.A. Report No.10, ISO 12213 Part 2, and ISO 20765. It applies GPA 2172 for the analysis of the sensitivity of the heating value to methanol.
