Thetechniques used were computational calculations and nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. The study made it possible to verify the conformational preference of each compound, determined by their energies and geometries, which were evaluated both for the isolated molecule, at distinct theory levels, and in different solvents, with the IEF-PCM solvation model. By using natural bond orbital calculations, it was possible to identify the main orbital interactions for each conformation. With the total deletion calculations, it was verified that there was a balance between the steric and hyperconjugative effects in the stabilization of the most stable structures. The majority conformers of halogenated compounds in ortho revealed the same spatial orientation between the carbonyl and the benzene ring, similar to that of the phenylacetic acid. In the derivatives, nitro and hydroxylated in ortho, there was the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond, but in none of these cases the interaction referred to one of the main conformers. The infrared experiments in solvents of different polarities, allowed the identification of more than one band, enabling the attribution of conformers present in the equilibrium as well as the observation of the same tendency as the one obtained theoretically. The coupling constant 1JCH was evaluated through nuclear magnetic resonance. No significant variation of this constant was observed, showing that the major contribution to the equilibrium is related to the majoritarian conformer, which prevails even with the change in the polarity of the medium, for each compound under evaluation.<br>Neste trabalho foi apresentado uma análise teórica e experimental do equilíbrio conformacional do ácido fenilacético e seus derivados, sendo eles: ofluorofenilacético, o-clorofenilacético, o-bromofenilacético, o-nitrofenilacético, ohidróxifenilacético, m-fluorofenilacético, p-fluorofenilacético, p-nitrofenilacético, phidróxifenilacético,p-mercaptofenilacético e p-aminofenilacético.

Earl, Christopher. "Introspective pushdown analysis and Nebo." Thesis, The University of Utah, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3621541.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> In the static analysis of functional programs, control-flow analysis (&kappa;-CFA) is a classic method of approximating program behavior as a finite state automata. CFA2 and abstract garbage collection are two recent, yet orthogonal improvements, on &kappa;-CFA. CFA2 approximates program behavior as a pushdown system, using summarization for the stack. CFA2 can accurately approximate arbitrarily-deep recursive function calls, whereas &kappa;-CFA cannot. Abstract garbage collection removes unreachable values from the store/heap. If unreachable values are not removed from a static analysis, they can become reachable again, which pollutes the final analysis and makes it less precise. Unfortunately, as these two techniques were originally formulated, they are incompatible. CFA2's summarization technique for managing the stack obscures the stack such that abstract garbage collection is unable to examine the stack for reachable values.</p><p> This dissertation presents introspective pushdown control-flow analysis, which manages the stack explicitly through stack changes (pushes and pops). Because this analysis is able to examine the stack by how it has changed, abstract garbage collection is able to examine the stack for reachable values. Thus, introspective pushdown control-flow analysis merges successfully the benefits of CFA2 and abstract garbage collection to create a more precise static analysis.</p><p> Additionally, the high-performance computing community has viewed functional programming techniques and tools as lacking the efficiency necessary for their applications. Nebo is a declarative domain-specific language embedded in C++ for discretizing partial differential equations for transport phenomena. For efficient execution, Nebo exploits a version of expression templates, based on the C++ template system, which is a type-less, completely-pure, Turing-complete functional language with burdensome syntax. Nebo's declarative syntax supports functional tools, such as point-wise lifting of complex expressions and functional composition of stencil operators. Nebo's primary abstraction is mathematical assignment, which separates what a calculation does from how that calculation is executed. Currently Nebo supports single-core execution, multicore (thread-based) parallel execution, and GPU execution. With single-core execution, Nebo performs on par with the loops and code that it replaces in Wasatch, a pre-existing high-performance simulation project. With multicore (thread-based) execution, Nebo can linearly scale (with roughly 90% efficiency) up to 6 processors, compared to its single-core execution. Moreover, Nebo's GPU execution can be up to 37x faster than its single-core execution. Finally, Wasatch (the pre-existing high-performance simulation project which uses Nebo) can scale up to 262K cores.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
During the past decade, there has been a growing disgust in Thailand with opposition to eating dogs in Asia and activists have unitedly with organizations encouraged the Thai government to adopt stricter animal rights laws in order to prevent the illegal dog meat trade. One of these organizations is the Thai animal welfare organization Soi Dog Foundation (SDF), that has also contributed with a controlled dog population on the Thai island Phuket and officially made it the first rabies free province in Thailand. Since SDF is solely volunteer and donations based it becomes relevant to examine the reasons behind their success as a non-governmental and nonprofit organization in a third world country. The thesis’s speculations regarding SDF’s historical development aims to help SDF and other NGOs in Asia that share the same goals streamline their marketing. This paper is a bachelor’s thesis including a minor field study in Thailand. It is a qualitative study with empirical observation and participation that analyzes SDF’s social marketing strategies. The study also includes a multimodal analysis of the focus organization’s materials fighting the illegal dog-meat trade and smuggling. The chosen materials are published during the beginning and end of the recent decade and are examined in order to determine which semiotic and multimodal tools they have used throughout this time period to spread awareness of the phenomenon. It is also examined whether SDF composes their texts and structures their materials differently depending on the target group. The research questions are answered with the help of semiotics and analytical tools from the systematic-functional grammar method. It will be briefly analyzed whether SDF attempts to build emotional appeals into their materials with the help of a model called ‘emotional branding’. The thesis’s approach to the analysis of SDF’s communication planning is based on the contingency approach, which implies that it takes variating methods in order to achieve a goal. The Four C’s model will be used in this study when discussing strategies NGOs can use to cooperate or create the desired relationship with their nation’s government. The agenda setting theory is implemented in order to examine SDF’s social marketing strategies. The results of this thesis show that SDF has adapted their materials to the ideal layout structures in modern time throughout the decade and frequently adapts them to their culturally variating target groups. The analysis also displays that the organization uses multiple strategies consisting of multiple minor steps in order to reach a certain goal. Results imply that SDF and other NGOs should focus on social media and their relation to the public, in order to eventually affect the majority public opinion and influence the government laws regarding animal rights.

Kates, Mitchell (Mitchell H. ). "Player motion analysis : automatically classifying NBA plays." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/100664.

Abstract:
Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2014.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 55-56).<br>Basketball is a team game, and an important task for coaches is analyzing the effectiveness of various offensive plays. Currently, teams spend a great deal of time examining video of past games. If teams could automatically classify plays, they could more effectively analyze their own plays and scout their opponents. In this thesis, we develop a methodology to help automatically classify a set of NBA plays using data from the SportVU optical tracking system, which tracks the position of each player and the ball 25 times per second. The problem is made challenging by the variations in how a play is run, the high proportion of possessions where no set play is run, the variance in length of plays, and the difficulty of acquiring a large number of labeled plays. We develop a framework for classifying plays using supervised machine learning. In our approach, we incorporate a novel sliding block algorithm that improves our classifier by accounting for the difference in play lengths. We also use a variant of the traditional one vs. all multi-class SVM. This approach is well suited to distinguish labeled plays from free motion and unlabeled plays. This thesis demonstrates that we can use SportVU data to automatically differentiate plays. We selected a total of six plays to classify, where each play had at least 20 labeled instances. We also added a large selection of plays that were not one of these six and labeled them as Other. Our framework correctly predicted the play with an accuracy of 72.6% and an F-score of .727. We also propose a framework, based on our engineered features, to extend our research to unlabeled plays.<br>by Mitchell Kates.<br>M. Eng.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates which factors that affect the salary for basketball players in the NBA and if the salary cap has achieved its purpose. The data for this project was collected from basketball-reference.com and consisted of performance measures from season 2015/2016 and salaries from the beginning of the season 2016/2017. The study was performed by using multiple linear regression analysis in the software R and the data was handled in Excel. The results from the regression indicates that position point guard, if the player has played in D-league or not,Age, Offensive rebounds, Assists, Steals, Two point attempts, Three point attempts, Free throw attempts, Field goal percentage, Usage percentage and Defensive rating are the main factors that affect the salary. The performance measures that had the greatest were two and three point attempts. The regression model achieved an explanatory level of 57:4%. In complementary to analyze if the salary cap has achieved its purpose, a literature analysis was used and showed that the salary cap systems in North America are neither accurately designed nor do they satisfy the intentions of what they were set to achieve.<br>Denna rapport undersöker vilka prestationsfaktorer som påverkar lönen för basketspelare i NBA och om NBA’s salary cap (lönetak) har uppnått sitt syfte.

Lakkis, Ramy A. "Arab regional integration : a neo-functionalist and transactionalist analysis." Thesis, Durham University, 2003. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3651/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a multidisciplinary analysis of Arab regional integration using the neo- functionalist and transactionalist approaches to integration. Neo-functionalism analyses the process of integration in the Arab World by studying the role of regional institutions including the league of Arab States and three Arab joint ventures. The transactionalist approach examines the impact of regional trade on political and economic integration in the Arab Mashreq. The analysis of the Arab joint ventures is taken further by using elements of business and finance theories. It is conducted on two different levels: the first analyses the operational and financial performance of these ventures. The second examines their role in promoting regional integration especially in the sectors concerned. The analysis is intended to find out whether these ventures were commercially viable or were more politically inspired. Qualitative information was collected from conducting constructive interviews with Arab economists, politicians and managers of the Arab joint ventures examined. The quantitative data was collected from recognisable resources including the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia and the Arab Monetary Fund. The problems encountered in this thesis resulted from the application of these theoretical approaches to integration, which are designed to study integration in politically developed societies with more advanced economies. However, the choice is justified since there are no alternatives. Secondly, the data on trade and Arab joint ventures may not be completely accurate since it does not record all transactions. The thesis concludes the following: at the political level, regional institutions did not promote Arab integration since they lacked aspects of supranationality and collective decision-making processes. Also, they did not affect the Arab elite's attitudes and could not initiate a viable process of integration that would spill over from one sector to another. At the economic level, the low level of regional trade in the Arab Mashreq did not prevent the occurrence of many attempts at Arab integration. Moreover, the Arab joint ventures were more politically inspired than commercially. Although they were more resilient to economic and political instability in the Arab World, their role in promoting regional integration was limited.

Abstract:
The National Basketball Association (NBA) generated well over $4 billion in revenues during the 2014-15 season. I analyze the value of a win to a team in terms of revenue and examine the potential underpayment or overpayment of players and superstars throughout the league relative to their marginal revenue product (MRP). My findings suggest that players are overpaid, especially superstars. However, it is important to consider the fixed-revenue streams a team receives before assuming a player is simply overpaid compared to his MRP. In congruence with previous literature, I find that veterans are overpaid at the expense of younger players’ lower salaries. I also look at the drivers of a player’s salary and find that general managers tend to overpay for points relative to other statistics.

Abstract:
The structural analysis objective is to determine the actions effects in a structure, with the purpose of verifying the ultimate limit states and serviceability (brazilian code NBR 6118:2003 - Design of concrete structures). The structural analysis is one of the main parts of a building structural design, since it involves the choice of theoretical models that represent appropriately the real structure, and the type of analysis due to the materials behavior. This work intends to shorten the distance between design engineers and the academic world, providing a clearer vision of the NBR 6118:2003 structural analysis approach. This work considers the most common structural models used for buildings, and the theory concerning the different types of analysis permitted by the brazilian code. It presents simple examples of linear elements computed by different types of analysis, emphasizing the moment redistribution possibility, either with the linear analysis with redistribution or the plastic analysis. The importance of considering T-beam with moment redistribution is made clear, and lines of direction to consider alternate position of live loads are given. The last example presents an eight store building, and its differences relative to efforts and displacements, obtained by distinct structural models

Abstract:
In the last two decades, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has made extensive efforts into expanding its reach outside of the North American market. Numerous attempt have been made by the league to spread the game of basketball into such areas as Europe, South America, and East Asia. As popularity for the sport grew, so did the potential for NBA teams to draft foreign talent. Indeed, the 1990’s and 2000’s saw an influx of foreign talent into the NBA. By the 2014-2015 season, there were a record 101 foreign players on opening day rosters, nearly five times as many as during the 1990-1991 season (21 players). This papers examines whether discrimination of foreign players exist via two value outcomes: salary and minutes per game. Based on an analysis of performance metrics, this paper found significant nationality effects on minutes per game, specifically that foreign players receive less playing time for commensurate performance. This paper did not find evidence to suggest salary or minute per game discrimination by race.

Abstract:
<p> Basketball is a unique sport in which the use of space and time is greatly important for a team&rsquo;s success. Furthermore, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is undergoing drastic change in terms of the way teams approach spatial issues as well as the spatio-temporal technologies and analytics. Given these facts, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide the opportunity to develop new analytic and visual methodologies to perform spatial analysis for team performances and meet the league&rsquo;s changing needs. This project thus develops new approaches, methods, and toolsets using GIS to demonstrate its efficacy and potential for professional application in the NBA. The first application uses GIS to adapt Relative Motion analysis techniques to an existing play, seeking to represent the average motion characteristics entailed therein. The other application uses a tool developed to map, glean spatial statistics, and model the use and importance of floor spacing for teams in the NBA. </p>

Ishihama, Kanako. "Triangles of Soul—Schubert the “Wanderer” and His Music Explained by Neo-Riemannian Graphs." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/23148.

Full text
Abstract:
In Schubert’s music, the theme “wandering” is used frequently, closely related to human life and death. I presume that, being stricken by serious illness and facing challenging relationships, Schubert lived his short life with agony and dismay, confronting the life theme “death.” In that sense, Schubert himself was probably the wanderer who kept trudging throughout his life journey. In 1822, Schubert composed the allegorical tale “My Dream,” and in that tale, he writes as follows; “when I attempted to sing of love, it turned to pain. And again, when I tried to sing of pain, it turned to love. Thus were love and pain divided in me” (Deutsch 1977, 227). Schubert lived his life, struggling between love and pain, and between life and death. Human life and death conflict with each other, but exist together in the same place. In other words, death is a root of life. If one can perceive that life and death both exist at the root of one’s life, the form of life should be represented by a circular path, not by a linear formation. This notion accords with Schubert’s musical style, where the same material comes back again and again in a circular formation. I assume that the notion—death as a root of life—is the essential conception of “wandering” that Schubert’s music expresses. In this dissertation, I would like to offer several Neo-Riemannian analyses and graphs of Schubert’s piano compositions; Impromptus D. 899, Moments Musical D. 780, Sonata in C-minor D. 958, and the “Wanderer” Fantasy D. 760. For each work and movement, I will map out the harmonic structure and key progressions on a Tonnetz graph, and suggest a new way to comprehend the nature of “wandering” that Schubert’s music portrays. Through the configurations and harmonic motions on the Tonnetz graphs, I will establish a way to comprehend Schubert’s concept of circular “wandering” visually and geometrically.

Abstract:
By employing a new kind of neo-Structuralist analysis this thesis demonstrates that a coherent structure underlies the medieval Welsh tales that have become collectively known as the Mabinogion. The first part of the thesis examines Levi-Strauss' Structuralist analysis technique and places it in the context of the wider field of the analysis of myth. The development of the Structuralist technique and the emergence of neo-Structuralism are then explored and pertinent criticisms of the technique are addressed. The first section of the work ends by positing a new, modified, model for neo-Structuralist analysis. This analysis technique is then applied to the Mabinogion, which are a set of closely related myths. Each myth is individually contextualised and a general section of ethnographic background precedes the analysis. As the myths are analysed trends in the patterning of the extrapolated data emerge and these are explored in detail. By the end of the analysis it is established that a clear pattern underlies all the material and this structure is then discussed both in relation to medieval Welsh social structure and neo-Structuralist theory.

Sergei Prokofiev is among the ranks of early-twentieth century composers whose music endures in the concert hall and whose life has attracted much musicological research. Fewer studies, however, have undertaken an analytical investigation into his music, and the body of scholarly work on the musical theoretical issues raised by his compositions does not rival that exploring the music of such major contemporaries as Igor Stravinsky and Béla Bartók. Existing Anglo-American contributions to the field of Prokofiev theory have mostly employed the tools of common-practice musical analysis, many of them using Schenkerian methods, with the more recent accounts of Richard Bass and Deborah Rifkin expanding these to incorporate the chromatic features of Prokofiev’s music in more sophisticated ways. A notable exception is Neil Minturn, who proposes an analytical approach informed by pitch-class set theory; his methodology, however, has not been developed in any further research. This thesis aims to make a contribution to Prokofiev analysis by applying recent developments in neo-Riemannian theories and the work of the noted Russian musicologist, Yuri Kholopov, whose early monograph on Prokofiev’s harmony has not been engaged with in English language accounts to date. Neo-Riemannian theories are well suited to this task due to the correspondence between their remit and the diatonic chromatic aspect of Prokofiev’s music. This thesis also introduces and explores the potential of Kholopov’s theoretical concepts regarding the nature of twentieth-century music, and in particular processes such as polyharmony, in original analytical applications. Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 and Piano Sonata No. 8 have been selected as focal works as they are acknowledged masterworks on an ambitious scale and arguably represent a shift in Prokofiev’s compositional thinking towards more abstract music in his later period. Existing analyses of extracts from these two works also offer the opportunity of making comparative observations. By focusing on harmony and large scale tonal design in these two works, this thesis hopes to demonstrate that a dialogue between the theoretical perspectives of Kholopov and those of neo-Riemannian theories may contribute valuable insights into Prokofiev’s music, at both surface and deep structural levels.

Abstract:
<p>This report has been compiled to document the thesis work carried out by Anton Andersson for Coresonic AB. The task was to develop an accelerator that could generate complex numbers suitable for fast fourier transforms (FFT) and tuning the phase of complex signals (NCO). Of many ways to achieve this, the CORDIC algorithm was chosen. It is very well suited since the basic implementation allows rotation of 2D-vectors using only shift and add operations. Error bounds and proof of convergence are derived carefully The accelerator was implemented in VHDL in such a way that all critical parameters were easy to change. Performance measures were extracted by simulating realistic test cases and then compare the output with reference data precomputed with high precision. Hardware costs were estimated by synthesizing a set of different configurations. Utilizing graphs of performance versus cost makes it possible to choose an optimal configuration. Maximum errors were extracted from simulations and seemed rather large for some configurations. The maximum error distribution was then plotted in histograms revealing that the typical error is often much smaller than the largest one. Even after trouble-shooting, the errors still seem to be somewhat larger than what other implementations of CORDIC achieve. However, precision was concluded to be sufficient for targeted applications.</p><br><p>Den här rapporten dokumenterar det examensarbete som utförts av AntonAndersson för Coresonic AB.

Gallas, Alexander. "Offensive completed : a neo-Poulantzasian analysis of the Thatcherite era, 1977-1999." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.539668.

Abstract:
I use a neo-Poulantzasian conceptual framework and argue that Thatcherite politics were specific in terms of how they addressed class relations. The Thatcherites marginalised working class militants and implemented a repressive form of trade union law by exploiting divisions in the trade union movement and the Labour Party. In addition, their privatisation of council houses and liberalisation of the mortgage and consumer credit markets tended to cover up inter-class divides and deepen intra-class divides. Accordingly, I see Thatcherism as a class political regime, that is, a relatively coherent ensemble of policies aimed at reproducing capitalist class domination. I contend that this was flanked by the emergence of an authoritarian neo-Ricardian regime in the areas of economic and state policy. The Thatcherites were committed to >free competition<, whilst also extending the state's repressive capacities. On the whole, they facilitated both an offensive of the power bloc and a neoliberal regime shift. As a result, class relations of forces shifted from an impasse to the dominance of capital. Thanks to the Thatcherites defeating their adversaries in the trade union movement, this shift became entrenched and their offensive became stabilised - something unprecedented in the post-war era. At the point of victory, however, divisions over strategy emerged among leading circles in the Conservative party. Consequently, they failed to respond to the transition from an offensive to a consolidating step of the power bloc. Thatcherism eroded and was eventually replaced by Blairism as the next class political regime, whilst authoritarian neo-Ricardianism remained.

DuFresne, Corey Christopher. "A neo-institutional analysis of opposition structures in the South African Parliament." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17460.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliography.<br>South Africa's negotiated parliamentary system is a hybrid of political institutions based upon different models of democracy. Theoretically, there are two broad models from which South Africa's system draws its characteristics: consociational democracy, and majoritarian democracy. Both models of democracy bestow certain characteristics on the South African system which affect how opposition politics operate within the system. Concern has been raised about the ability of opposition politics to function in, and contribute to, the operation of the South African Parliament. The many consociational characteristics of the South African system may have created opposition structures which are emaciated of their duties, rights and responsibilities. This concern prompted an investigation into the operation of the opposition structures of the South African Parliament. The basis of the neo-Institutional analysis is the premise that the behaviour of actors within a system (in this case, Members of Parliament within Parliament) is shaped by the rules and structure of that system. As such, the opposition behaviour of parties and individuals in the South African Parliament is shaped by the rules and structure of Parliament. This paper first presents the theoretical considerations of a neo-Institutionalist examination. The theory is explored by examining the literature of rational choice theorists as well as Historical Institutionalists. Secondly, an examination is conducted of the different models of democracy-and the attributes which each contribute to the South African system. Within this section, the concept of opposition is developed. The analysis of the South African Parliamentary institutions of opposition is conducted by examining the two basic documents which proscribe the rules of procedure for the institutions of Parliament: the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and the Standing Rules of the National Assembly. The theoretical expectations of behaviour are checked against the empirical reality of Parliamentary behaviour. This study examines data collected from the Debates of the National Assembly (Hansard) regarding individual and party participation in debate, questions and interpellations, committees, and Cabinet. The data support the contention of the analysis that whether it is by virtue of the consociational nature of Cabinet, or the over-representation of smaller parties in National Assembly debate, opposition politics are an important part of the Parliamentary process in South Africa.

Abstract:
This PhD project studied the genetic epistemology of novice programmers, and provides empirical evidence that the development of programming skills can be described using the neo-Piagetian cognitive development framework. The thesis identifies the manifestations of each of the early neo-Piagetian stages of development in the programming domain – that is: sensorimotor, preoperational and concrete operational. This research informs not only tertiary pedagogy, but teaching and learning of computer programming in any setting. It will enable educators to (a) identify the developmental stage of their students, (b) provide stage-appropriate learning resources and (c) assist students in transitioning to the next more mature stage of reasoning.

McKinney, David LeRoy. "Interpreting the Organ Works of Hugo Distler." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194024.

Full text
Abstract:
The document examines Hugo Distler’s organ solo works within the context of performance. Chapter One contains relevant biographical information primarily based on the work of Ursula Herrmann. Chapter Two discusses the cultural, academic, and career influences on Distler’s compositional output. Chapter Three has analyses of select organ works and a discussion as to how these relate to performance. Chapter Four provides information about the playing and physical execution of Distler’s music at the organ console, with much of the information coming from primary sources written by Distler himself. Distler was born out of wedlock in Nürnberg. His early childhood was fraught with bad experiences. Under the guardianship of his maternal grandparents, he attended a Gymnasium and a music academy. When he was later unable to complete his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory, his teachers provided him with excellent recommendations, and Distler became the new organist at St. Jakobi in Lübeck in 1931. In this new environment, he became famous as a church musician, organist, conductor, and composer - the par excellence of German music. His other positions were in academia in Stuttgart and Berlin, and he eventually became a full professor. Due to the repression by the Nazi party, constantly being overworked, and the impact of his early childhood upon his psyche, Distler committed suicide on All Saints Day, November 1, 1942. Distler became the first person to compose music for the organ in a modern style that was suited for the sound of the Baroque organ. His organ music is based on vocal techniques, experiments with rhythm, uses a variety of scales and modes, and is generally pentatonic. The ideology of clarity in Distler’s works is of utmost importance. It should be apparent that this dictates the performer’s choices regarding how to interpret them. Registration, tempi, and articulation are servants to the composition. Performers of his music need to remain cognizant of this.

Abstract:
In the modern society it is well known that an individual’s background matters in his career, but should it be taken into consideration in a recruiting process in general and a recruiting process of NBA-players in particular? Previous research shows that white basketball players from high-income families have a 75% higher chance of becoming an NBA player compared to a white basketball player from a low-income family. In this paper, we have examined whether there is a connection between NBA-player background and the chances of succeeding in the NBA given that the player has been picked in the NBA-draft. The results have been carried out using machine learning algorithms based on Gaussian Processes. The results show that draft decisions will not be improved by taking socio-economic background into consideration.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies partnerships among non- governmental organizations (NGOs) and the resulting consequences of these collaborations. The presence of NGOs in the international system is recognized with scholarly works examining what they are, what they do, and what is their role. However, it is also necessary to systematically analyze the causes for collaborations among NGOs and the following consequences. I ask what determines for NGOs to partner with one another. And, who benefits from these collaborations? I carefully place my study within the broader context of the main international relations paradigms and within the specific debates concerning the NGOs. Using social network analysis, quantitative tools, and in-depth interviews I find that similarity is a main determinant for NGOs to collaborate with one another. Importantly, my findings show that not only shared altruistic goals, as proposed by the dominant literature, but also shared strategic goals matter in the choices for partners. I further show that shared altruistic and strategic goals also influence who the final beneficiaries from the collaborations are. My findings reveal that less often vulnerable populations receive a direct help, even when the organizations advance principled goals. I conclude that NGOs have not only altruistic goals but also strategic needs and wants. The forging of their partnerships and the outcomes of their collaborations are influenced by these distinct goals. NGOs, as strategic actors, make complex decisions, that momentously bring a limited impact on vulnerable populations and the international system overall.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>The Navys approach to planning and executing Chief of Naval Operations maintenance availabilities has undergone significant changes since 2006. The adoption of unique lean initiatives and defined project management fundamentals have guided shipyard and project leadership as they manage scheduled industrial maintenance for ships and submarines. These business practices have resulted in performance measurement and control data being gathered for shipyard management to use as they analyze availability performance. This thesis reports on the results of exploratory analyses of these data to evaluate associations and trends pertaining to cost and schedule performance since the inception of the lean initiative. The studys analyses suggest that numerous performance metrics display trends which suggest availability performance is improving over the defined lean initiative time frame; that several metrics are functions of the length of the individual availability and require appropriate weighting considerations; and that average weekly interim production bow wave metrics evaluated early in an availability may have predictive abilities concerning availability completion success.

Abstract:
A pesquisa aborda os requisitos de conforto ambiental presentes na NBR 15575 –desempenho térmico, acústico e lumínico – face aos sistemas construtivos componentes da envoltória da edificação.<br>As a means of solving the housing deficit caused by the rapid growth of the urban population, public authorities have been promoting over the last few decades actions aimed at encouraging the production of popular housing projects. Currently, the federal government, by means of a national housing policy, is focusing investments on what is called the Band 1 of the program My House, My Life (in Portuguese, Programa Minha Casa, Minha Vida – PMCMV), which aims to create mechanisms to encourage the production and purchase of new housing units by families with monthly income of up to 1,800.00 reais. Launched in 2009, the program contracted more than 4.2 million housing units until February 2017. With that in mind, the construction of popular housing has proven committed to meeting the demand for quantity but is inefficient regarding design and construction quality. Although, for most beneficiaries, the buildings represent an evolution in their housing pattern, basic requirements of appropriate housing are depreciated. With solutions usually focused on construction speed and scale economy, a rationalization of space production prevails. Other aspects are left in the background, such as: environmental comfort criteria, functionality, proper location and even, in some cases, construction quality. Providing the market with quality environments is as important as supplying the housing demand, mainly under the perspective of the future resident. The quality of a building results in the welfare of the user promoted by the living conditions, and the architectural design is the way to develop these conditions.

Abstract:
NGOs have arguably become the most prominent actors in development, managing increasing volumes of funding and becoming important interlocutors to government and international agencies. This thesis contributes to the increasing body of academic literature on NGOs. It presents a case study, namely Lebanon, in recent historical perspective and in the context of changing funding frameworks in overseas development aid. It is examined how country context as well as donor frameworks shape NGO operations. Project implementation by NGOs is judged as highly context specific. That is to say NGO characteristics change with historical, political and social context. NGO operations are shaped by regulatory framework, international development discourse and donor demands. This dissertation addresses how country context, donor preferences and funding frameworks affect project implementation by NGOs Two data sources are used to address this question firstly a large NGO survey, covering more than 3000 non-governmental organisations and secondly a qualitative study consisting of firstly a small database of 197 projects and secondly records of semi-structured interviews with NGO staff and experts. The qualitative data focuses rural development projects. Descriptive analysis of the NGO survey is used to build a historical analysis of the Lebanese NGO sector in various periods. The focus of activity as well as staffing and funding patterns are found to vary across activity and time. Following an analysis of country specific influences on NGO operations is an analysis of donor preferences. Multi-variate logistic regression analysis is used to analyse which donors fund what type of NGOs. Empirical manifestations of donor preferences indicate that Lebanese third sector, governmental and international donors have specific preferences of certain NGO characteristics, such as institutional sophistication, access to networks or sectarian affiliation. Thematic analysis of qualitative data of rural development projects shows that, though donor influence is not articulated directly by NGO staff, it can be revealed through an analysis of implemented projects and a critical appraisal of their impact. Through funding frameworks donors are found to define from the outset a significant share of NGO project implementation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to describe the form of knowledge that is made available to six year olds as 'Science' in key South African Grade R curriculum texts. The study draws on a neo-Vygotskian conceptualisation of forms of knowledge and child development to develop a language of description in terms of which the selected texts are analysed. Representations of knowledge in the curriculum texts are described in relation to the notion of a simple scientific concept, an idea that was derived from a neo-Vygotskian conceptualisation of knowledge. A simple scientific concept is consistent with scientific criteria and functions as an entry level concept in relation to scientific knowledge. Findings indicate that the Grade R science curriculum represents knowledge in terms of everyday concepts and 'potential' scientific concepts, i.e. concepts that have the potential to prompt the Grade R educator to translate an everyday concept into a simple scientific concept. However, the curriculum does not represent any concepts in ways that conform to the criteria for scientific concepts, including simple scientific concepts. The study concludes that the official recontextualisation of scientific knowledge into Grade R school science is problematic because the Grade R science curriculum represents knowledge mostly in everyday terms. The implications are that Grade R learners are not given the opportunity to acquire the form or content of scientific knowledge or to develop the cognitive skills required for formal schooling.

The main objective of the study is to analyze the process of organizational learning inside of the companies certified by NBR ISO 9001:2000, identifying procedures that, if better managed, could propitiate improvements in the company, with reflexes in the organization acting. The investigated variables were Strategic Intention and the Objectives of the Learning, Components of the Learning, Viability of the Learning, Culture of the Organization and Administration of the Learning, this questionnaire was divided in five dimensions and applied in the companies certified by NBR ISO 9001:2000. The research was accomplished through the interview of the 400 collaborators of the researched companies. For the descriptive statistical analysis of the data was used the software, Sphinx Lexical and for multivariate analysis was used the software Statistica 7.0. The descriptive analysis applied to the collaborators in the companies A, B and C is observed that the organizational learning is present inside of the researched organizations and identifying the individual's importance for the organizational development. Considering the dimensions attributed in the questionnaire, conclude that the aspects of the results has a great influence in the evaluation of the organizational learning, from the managers as well as from the collaborators. Comparing the importance level, it was verified that the companies had very important estimates obtaining a satisfactory result for the company. This data represents how important is the collaborators' expectations for the organizational learning. When the method of linkage simple was applied, variables with the same degree of information was excluded, and it was obtained α = 0,75. Analyzing the method linkage simple, all of the questionnaire dimensions was presented, without being other dimensions classified. The Analysis of Cluster identified the variables that belong to the same cluster facilitating, with this, to discover if they have the same purpose. After the retreat of variables with the same purpose inside of each cluster, it was obtained the formation of a new questionnaire, which was appropriate for a new research, turning the most representative work in relation to the first application.

Beaulieu, Daniel Ryan. "A Framing Analysis: The NBA's "One-And-Done"Rule." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4288.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2006, the NBA introduced the "one-and-done" rule that restricted high school graduates to enter directly into the NBA draft following high school. In turn, a high school prospect would essentially now have the option of playing professionally elsewhere (most likely overseas), enter the NBA's Developmental League, or play NCAA basketball. The rule has proved to be quite controversial, as it has had a great effect on both NBA and NCAA basketball, as well as the players. Various media outlets have been quite vocal not only about the rule itself, but the perceived effects it has had on both collegiate and professional basketball. This study will utilize framing theory to explore the way the media has presented the issue to the public, its causal interpretation, any moral evaluations necessary, and any solutions to the problem. This study will utilize a content analysis to analyze not only the media's presentation of the rule, but also what frames have been formed pertaining to the rule's successes and failures. The study will also aim to give a greater understanding of how the basketball media form frames.

Kehler, Nicole. "Coordinating Humanitarian Assistance: A Comparative Analysis of Three Cases." Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/9938.

Full text
Abstract:
For many years the United Nations (UN) has sought to coordinate its numerous agencies and other humanitarian relief actors during responses to natural disasters and complex emergencies. Its success in this endeavor has been mixed. Through an analysis of three different humanitarian relief operations-the Rwanda genocide in 1994, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's intervention in Kosovo in 1999, and the floods of 2000 in Mozambique-this paper describes more fully the conditions under which coordination efforts occur. Specifically, this essay argues that successful and effective coordination in each particular crisis depends on the extent to which certain capacity and contextual conditions were present. In addition, it suggests that the often-touted "coordination by command" approach, a top-down style of coordination, should not be assumed by the UN since, as the literature suggests, this notion is quite contentious among nongovernmental organizations and United Nations staff alike. This paper critiques the utility of pursuing this model and offers instead an alternative vision of a pragmatic facilitation role for UN agencies in humanitarian relief operations<br>Master of Public and International Affairs

Abstract:

"Analysis of groundwater rebound in the Milan Metropolitan area by hydrostratigraphic, groundwater quality and flow modeling." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/199139.

Full text
Abstract:
Groundwater plays a fundamental role in shaping the economic and the social health of many urban areas. Due to its relatively low-cost and generally high quality, groundwater has been widely exploited for private domestic, irrigational, and industrial use. However, industrial use has decreased dramatically in the last few decades leading to a groundwater level rise causing geotechnical and environmental problems. Many urban areas are currently suffering this situation with consequent concerns about damage to subsurface engineering structures, inundation of subsurface facilities, and the mobilization of contaminants. As results, in recent years it has been recognised that urban groundwater is a potentially valuable resource due to problems associated with its under exploitation. The objective of this thesis is to tackle four main issues: (i) developing a robust hydro-stratigraphic model and providing a comprehensive hydraulic parametrization of glaciofluvial aquifers, (ii) providing a hydrogeochemical characterization and the assessment of the groundwater quality status relative to baseline conditions in a complex framework (i.e. urban), (iii) monitoring groundwater level and understanding the spatial variability of groundwater recharge (i.e. effective rainfall recharge and canal infiltration) to unconfined aquifer in urban areas, and (iv) developing both a regional and a urban scale groundwater flow model for simulating future withdrawals and climate (i.e. recharge) changes, and mitigation measures scenarios. These issues are illustrated for the aquifers of the Milan Metropolitan area which can be considered an example of how urbanization and changes in withdrawals can pose some threats to availability and quality of the groundwater resource. In fact, groundwater resources in the Milan Metropolitan area (Northern Italy) has been heavily exploited for public and industrial supply. Since the 1970s, the water demand of industry has fallen (ca. 36%) causing a groundwater rebound up to 15 m in the unconfined aquifer. Despite the aquifers in the Milan Metropolitan area are an incredible groundwater resource for a very large population (5,181,192 people) and a highly industrialized area a comprehensive hydrogeochemical characterization, and a groundwater flow model capable to capture the overall groundwater dynamics (both in steady and transient state) based on a comprehensive hydraulic parametrization and reliable recharge inputs, are still lacking.<br>Groundwater plays a fundamental role in shaping the economic and the social health of many urban areas. Abstract:
This study examines the South Korea President Park Geun-hye and United States President Obama respective administration's policy vis-à-vis North Korea. The scope is narrowed down to the year 2013, during which the regime in Pyongyang conducted its third nuclear test. How to perceive and engage the regime in Pyongyang have been debated in the post-cold war era, divided into progressive (doves) and hard liners (hawks). Periods of policy discrepancy have occurred between Washington and Seoul, that have been observed to bear effect on North Korean behavior vis-à-vis South Korea. This study ties on to the contemporary policy debate in Seoul and Washington on North Korean engagement strategies. Moreover, expanding the scope and examines the respective administration's policy through a analytical framework based on a content analysis from a system level perspective. Furthermore, how neo-realism, neo-liberalism and the concept of reciprocity can shed light upon respective policies and give a sense of notion of alignment or discrepancy between Seoul and Washington.

Fieschi, Catherine. "The French Fifth Republic and populism : a neo-institutional analysis of the Front national." Thesis, McGill University, 2000. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=36767.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to offer an explanation for the emergence and success of the French political party the Front national. The project uses theories of political opportunity structures, neo-institutionalist approaches and a theory of ideological morphology to argue that institutions and ideologies have particular links to one another. This, in turn, leads to the argument that the FN's success can be attributed to the relationships between the institutions of the Fifth Republic on the one hand and fascist ideology in France on the other. It is argued that the gradual presidentialisation of French politics from 1958 onward reconciles two contradictory drives in French politics (the party drive and the rally drive), this reconciliation of the two drives and the institutionalisation of the rally drive grants renewed legitimacy to populist ideas in France. It is also argued that, given the component concepts of fascism as an ideology (its ideological morphology) and the links between ideologies and the contexts (institutional, social, political) in which they emerge, institutional pressures such as those generated by the Fifth Republic and its subsequent presidentialisation accounts for a mutation of French proto-fascism into a type of populist ideology. The FN's modification of its fascist ideology and conversion to an overt form of populism is depicted and analysed as a case study of a party's adaptation to, and exploitation of, the new structures of political opportunity created by the Fifth Republic; one in which populist ideas were more likely than fascist ones to lead to a measure of political success given the institutionalisation of a form of hitherto marginalised rally politics.

Gilchrist, Grant. "Analysis of the Economic Impact of Constructing a NBA Arena on the Host City." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1949.

Full text
Abstract:
Using economic data collected from 24 different Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the US, this thesis investigates the impact of constructing a new National Basketball Association (NBA) arena on the host city’s economy. When a simplistic model is implemented, which does not control for other economic factors or individual subject heterogeneity, significantly positive economic impacts of arena construction are observed. However, when a more appropriate model specification is implemented that controls for economic activity and individual heterogeneity, these effects are no longer statistically significant. This comparative analysis ultimately highlights the importance of appropriate model specification and supports the conclusion that new NBA arenas, by themselves, are not significant catalysts of urban economic development.
