In my thesis, I present the methods I use to predict NBA games using matrix factorization. Matrix factorization is popular through the Netflix recommendation problem, but in general, one can apply it to data that are best modeled as the result of pairwise interaction. My thesis contains three parts. First, I explain how I model NBA prediction as a matrix factorization problem and use the basic low-rank matrix factorization approach to discover structure in the data. I also explain some differences between using matrix factorization for NBA prediction versus that in the Netflix recommendation problem. Second, I use probabilistic matrix factorization (PMF) to incorporate the fact that when two teams play each other, the scores will be different each time. Lastly, I incorporate supplementary information such as the date of the game by combining multiple PMF problems using Gaussian process priors. I replace the scalar latent features with functions of this supplementary information to aid with prediction.

Shah, Parin. "Economic Subterfuge and the NBA Lockout." Thesis, Boston College, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/2641.
Full textAt the very core of the National Basketball Association’s labor negotiations between the owners and the players during the 2011 lockout was the league’s argument that its economic structure was broken. Owners contended that the NBA’s soft salary cap system, and the resulting payroll disparity, has put small-market franchises at a talent disadvantage and produced a league of haves and have-nots. To remedy this purported competitive balance problem, the owners demanded severe policy measures to decrease the pay dispersion among teams. However, the players union cautioned that these hardline provisions were merely an attempt to transfer wealth from players to owners. This charge warranted further analysis. Existing literature on this topic is either outdated or insufficient in scope. As such, using regression analysis, this thesis evaluated the league’s argument and determined to what extent the league’s soft salary cap system has contributed to its competitive imbalance. The empirical analysis of this thesis produced several meaningful conclusions. While the NBA has relative imbalance, it does not affect consumer demand for the regular season product. Moreover, while pay dispersion exists, additional salary expenditures only marginally add to a team’s winning percentage. There is no significant relationship between payroll disparity and competitive balance. Finally, with the escalating importance of media rights contracts and the historical appreciation of franchise valuation, the league overstated the financial distress of most of its small-market owners. Overall, the NBA and its owners used deceptive rhetoric and misleading economic policies to decrease player salaries, not to increase competitive balance, in a collusive effort to maximize profits and reassert its diminishing monopsony power in an increasingly star-driven league

Perry, Christopher Mattison. "Selection Bias in the NBA Draft." Thesis, Boston College, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/554.
Full textIn this paper I present an econometric analysis of selection bias in the NBA Draft from 1995-2003. Employing an interval regression maximum likelihood control model that predicts the eventual value of players based on their Draft position, I pinpoint which groups of players consistently over-perform or under-perform relative to their Draft position. Using this analysis I detect bias pertaining to four different groups of players. There was a bias against high school players, especially those taken in the lottery (the top of the first round of the Draft), which may point to risk-averse tendencies of NBA teams. There was also a bias in favor of centers taken in the lottery, who were consistently drafted too high. Black players were selected too low in the first round, and too high in the second round. The final effect deals with foreign entrants to the Draft. From 1995-2001 foreigners were drafted too low; in 2002 and 2003, when more foreigners were selected, they were drafted too high. My paper details the nature of these biases and analyzes their potential causes

Unexpected events often occur in the world of sports. In my thesis, I present work that models the NBA. My goal was to build a model of the NBA Machine Learning and other statistical tools in order to better make predictions and quantify unexpected events. In my thesis, I first review other quantitative models of the NBA. Second, I present novel features extracted from NBA play-by-play data that I use in building my predictive models. Third, I propose predictive models that use team-level statistics. In the team models, I show that team strength relations might not be transitive in these models. Fourth, I propose predictive models that use player-level statistics. In these player-level models, I demonstrate that taking the context of a play into account is important in making useful prediction. Finally, I analyze the effectiveness of the different models I created, and propose suggestions for future lines of inquiry.

Basketball is a team game, and an important task for coaches is analyzing the effectiveness of various offensive plays. Currently, teams spend a great deal of time examining video of past games. If teams could automatically classify plays, they could more effectively analyze their own plays and scout their opponents. In this thesis, we develop a methodology to help automatically classify a set of NBA plays using data from the SportVU optical tracking system, which tracks the position of each player and the ball 25 times per second. The problem is made challenging by the variations in how a play is run, the high proportion of possessions where no set play is run, the variance in length of plays, and the difficulty of acquiring a large number of labeled plays. We develop a framework for classifying plays using supervised machine learning. In our approach, we incorporate a novel sliding block algorithm that improves our classifier by accounting for the difference in play lengths. We also use a variant of the traditional one vs. all multi-class SVM. This approach is well suited to distinguish labeled plays from free motion and unlabeled plays. This thesis demonstrates that we can use SportVU data to automatically differentiate plays. We selected a total of six plays to classify, where each play had at least 20 labeled instances. We also added a large selection of plays that were not one of these six and labeled them as Other. Our framework correctly predicted the play with an accuracy of 72.6% and an F-score of .727. We also propose a framework, based on our engineered features, to extend our research to unlabeled plays.

Full textThe degradation of pycobilisomes under nitrogen deficiency, which is visible as a color change from blue green to yellow green, is an ubiquitary mechanism. Essential for the degradation is the small NblA protein. The well characterized NblA protein from Nostoc sp. PCC 7120 builds as biological active form a homodimer and interacts with the phycobilisomes and ClpC. However, the model organism Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 possess two nblA genes, nblA1 and nblA2, which are both essential for phycobilisome degradation. In this work it could be shown by interaction studies and Förster resonance energy transfer that NblA1 and NblA2 builds as biological active form a heterodimer. Furthermore it could be shown that the NblA proteins form a ternary complex with ClpC (the HSP100 chaperone partner of Clp proteases) and phycobiliproteins in vitro. This complex is susceptible to ATP-dependent degradation by a Clp protease. Clp proteases of Cyanobacteria consist, besides the chaperones ClpC and ClpX of three different proteolytic subunits (ClpP1, 2, 3) and the ClpP variant ClpR which lacks the catalytic triad typical of Serine-type proteases. In Synechococcus 7942 two Clp proteases could be identified by gel filtration and immunoblot analyses, which provided evidence that each protease consists of a unique proteolytic core comprised of two separate Clp subunits, one core consisting of ClpP1 and ClpP2, and the other of ClpP3 and ClpR, in which subunits ClpP1/ClpP2 interact with ClpX and the ClpP3/ClpR protease with ClpC. In addition to these two soluble proteases, a third, membrane associated proteolytic complex is assumed, consisting of ClpP1 and ClpR. In Synechocystis 6803, homologs of the Clp machinery could be found by BLAST analyzes. This putative ClpP1/ClpR protease could be characterized in vitro by size-exclusion chromatography and degradation assays. Furthermore it could be shown a degradation of the NblA1/NblA2 heterodimer by the protease.

I use SecondSpectrum play-by-play data from the 2016-2017 NBA season to assemble behavioral event data for each player. Behavioral data includes propensity to dribble/pass/shoot, and also the resulting quality of shot when players decide to shoot or make another pass. I apply a k-means clustering algorithm to cluster teams based on their starting lineup behavior data; the clusters show different team makeups within the behavioral data collected. In particular, the clustering identified pass-heavy vs dribble-heavy offenses, and good shot-decision making teams.

Full textBasketball is a unique sport in which the use of space and time is greatly important for a team’s success. Furthermore, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is undergoing drastic change in terms of the way teams approach spatial issues as well as the spatio-temporal technologies and analytics. Given these facts, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide the opportunity to develop new analytic and visual methodologies to perform spatial analysis for team performances and meet the league’s changing needs. This project thus develops new approaches, methods, and toolsets using GIS to demonstrate its efficacy and potential for professional application in the NBA. The first application uses GIS to adapt Relative Motion analysis techniques to an existing play, seeking to represent the average motion characteristics entailed therein. The other application uses a tool developed to map, glean spatial statistics, and model the use and importance of floor spacing for teams in the NBA.

Full textThe economic and social advances of the 2000´s, placed Brazil in a prominent position on the crisis scenario installed in developed countries. This prestige was reflected in the right to host the two largest sporting events in the world, FIFA World Cup Soccer and the Olympics. Major sports and entertainment international organizations seized the moment to open market in Brazil, the NBA, the most globalized sports league in the world, took the time to open in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, the NBA Brazil, first league office in South America. The NBA 's internationalization process in Brazil becomes an interesting factor to be studied, since all search for international markets bring many risks and the political and economic unpredictability that Brazil suffers since 2014 added to cultural factors linked to the sports organization justifies this project. Through this context, it was defined as a general objective to evaluate the risks of the NBA internationalization process in Brazil in 2012-2015 and 2020 periods. Therefore, an extensive literature review and consultation with four experts was held to raise what are the relevant dimensions and variables for evaluation of NBA¿s risk of internationalization in Brazil, they are: Uncertainty (ten variables) and Commitment (ten variables). Weights and notes were assigned to these variables in the two periods studied allowing the formatting of NBA¿s Risk Assessment Index (IARnba), as a product of this work. In addition, the study allowed an analysis of NBA¿s Internationalization Process in Brazil from its opening (2012-2015) and five years ahead (2020) which showed that in the period studied there possibly a decrease in NBA risk of internationalization in Brazil, generating a deepening and strengthening of relations with the business market and a consequently reduction of uncertainty. Full textNeurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) encompasses a group of rare neurogenerative disorders with different clinical and molecular features, underlined by progressive extrapyramidal dysfunction and iron accumulation in the brain. To date, mutations in 11 genes are currently known. Nevertheless for most of them their link with iron accumulation is still misunderstood. This work presents two novel NBIA genes identified by exome sequencing in two independent families. The first gene, REPS1, is involved in endosome recycling. Patient’s fibroblasts are characterized by iron overload corrected by wild-type REPS1 cDNA overexpression. The second gene, CRAT, encodes a carnitine acetyltransferase and a β-oxidation deficit in patient’s fibroblasts has been fixed by overexpression of wild-type CRAT cDNA. The function of REPS1 in endosome recycling put on the path of the NBIA pathophysiological mechanism. Indeed, fibroblasts of REPS1 patients but also from other patients mutated in various NBIA genes (CRAT, PANK2, PLA2G6, FA2H, C19ORF12) present massive iron accumulation and abnormal transferrin receptor (TfR1) recycling. TfR1 allows iron uptake by endocytosis and its expression is regulated by the iron cellular status. The only known regulation of iron homeostasis occurs at the posttranscriptional level by the IRE/IRP system which is functional in NBIA fibroblasts whereas TfR1 protein accumulates. This iron accumulation highlights a yet unknown posttranslational regulation which is not functional in NBIA. We have been able to demonstrate that this regulation occurs via TfR1 palmitoylation, which is defective in NBIA, but restored by artesunate. Hence, whatever the disease gene, all NBIA gave rise to abnormal TfR1 recycling which allows defining NBIA as intracellular trafficking disease. The second part of the thesis focused on the pathophysiological mechanism of the Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) also characterized by brain iron overload . FRDA is related to triplets expansions in the first intron of FXN gene leading to the extinction of FXN and PIP5K1B upstream gene. Studying cellular models knocked down for FXN and/or PIP5K1B by siRNA and patients’ fibroblasts of patients allowed to detect abnormal iron homeostasis reminiscent of NBIA. All these results allowed to decipher the NBIA pathophysiological mechanism, to highlight a yet unknown iron homeostasis regulation and to open possible ways towards therapeutic drugs for NBIA

We want to build a model to forecast the American professional basketball game results, presumably Taiwan sports lottery more reasonable odds and let the minutes. I try to three analysis method to establish a model. Analysis method 1: the regression analysis method. Analysis method 2: using odds model to estimate each team once what kind of winning the condition is reached, the game he will win, but what is the chance of winning. Or is each team, once you reach the kind of defeats conditions, that game he bound to lose, and he lost a game what is the chance of. Analysis method 3: analysis into the playoffs 16 teams in the quarter Cup competition results, analyzed the merits of each team, and according to the point, to speculate on the results of the playoffs for the victory. This thesis is a very bold attempt, unfortunately unable to achieve the original purpose; is set up a chance for a game of the model to do. This result is very disappointing but not unexpected that made me too, because the American professional basketball game is to hope that the characteristics of the game results cannot be predicted.

If we want to realize a basketball game, we could just spend almost one hour sitting and watching a whole live video, or after the end of a game, the official will provide some formatted information, and if we need to see more detail, the play-by-play textual information is also available to show what happened in the court. However it just roughly show, some situations in the game, without telling which team takes the lead all the time, or lost the lead after one moment, and why they lost or who made the most contribution in a team. We provide a method and design the visualization, which could help more clearly and completely understand one NBA game, and we propose a four-level scheme to show a game in terms of different time units, so that we could see the score by a quarter, or by a minute, and through a Storyline mechanism we could show how a player interacts with each other in game, so it could tell who the most active player is and made the most contribution in a game.

We cast the problem of predicting the winner in NBA Finals as a problem of division. Using scores in the regular season 2000 and the records of NBA Finals from 1947 to 1999, the winning probability (of a single game) is fitted by a class of beta density functions, Beta(cp_0,c(1-p_0)) where p_0 in[0.5448,0.6866] and c equals 3.5. The robust Bayesian predictive intervals of winning probability of the NBA Finals are calculated. Discrepancy is found between the odds given by New Zealand''s Official Betting Agency and our calculation when the Lakers is leading the Pacers 2:0.

Full textThe National Basket Association (NBA) is considered the premier professional basketball league in the world and is seen today as one of the greatest attractions alongside the NHL or the NFL, due to its great shows and players. This research project will contribute to the theory and practice by establishing the added value that Business Intelligence tools can provide, as well as the positive impact it can have on a player, coach, and consequently on a team's decisions and future results. First, a literature review will be conducted to understand how reputation and status can impact a player’s environment; how statistics are an important asset in the evaluation of player´s performance; and also, in the identification of over-paid and underpaid players. Thereafter, Power BI software will be used to develop reports and dashboards. The main goal is that, both players and coaches, can improve their ability to interpret and analyze their own performances. In the end, they are not only adding value to their teams (through this smart tool), but they are also creating an environment where the teams are one step closer in what is the definition of a smart team.
