This thesis presents the formulation and solution of a new problem in systems and control theory, called the Network Realization Problem. Its relationship to other problems, such as State Realization and Structural Identifiability, is shown. The motivation for this work is the desire to completely quantify the conditions for transitioning between different mathematical representations of linear time-invariant systems. The solution to this problem is useful for theorists because it lays a foundation for quantifying the information cost of identifying a system's complete network structure from t

In this dissertation, I propose a reductive account of causation. This account may be stated as follows: Causation: c is a cause of e within a possibility horizon ℓ if a) c is process-connected to e, and b) e security-depends on c within ℓ. More precisely, my suggestion is that there are two kinds of causal relata: instantaneous events (defined in Chapter 4) and possibility horizons (defined in Chapter 5). Causation is a ternary relation between two actual instantaneous events - the cause c and the effect e - and a possibility horizon ℓ. I argue that causation has a dual nature: on the one han

Text in Afikaans<br>In this thesis contributions to the solution of the generalised knapsack problem are given and discussed. Attention is given to problems with functions that are calculable but not necessarily in a closed form. Algorithms and test problems can be used for problems with closed-form functions as well. The focus is on the development of good heuristics and not on exact algorithms. Heuristics must be investigated and good test problems must be designed. A measure of convexity for convex functions is developed and adapted for concave functions. A test problem generator makes
