Abstract:

William Smith's 1815 geologic map A Delineation of the Strata of England and Wales with Part of Scotland did not initially portray the stratum ‘Trap Rocks’. He did, however, include ‘Trap Rocks’ on the much simplified, reduced-scale 1820 map entitled A New Geological Map of England and Wales, a revision of his 1815 map. On the 1820 map, outcrop patterns in the Midland Valley resemble patterns seen on two earlier maps of Scotland; those by Louis-Albert Necker de Saussure in 1808 and Jean-François Berger in 1816. Abstract:

In 2015 Geneva celebrates the bicentenary of the Republic's adhesion to the Swiss Confederation in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. Unlike other cantons formed at the same time, the territory of the new canton of Geneva was significantly larger than that of the previous entity, changing the political and confessional character of the ‘Protestant Rome'. A synopsis of the new canton was quickly published, aiming to promote a new cantonal identity, and this included a section on the lithology and geology of the canton by Louis-Albert Necker. ABSTRACT After a promising start to his career in the earth sciences, Louis-Albert Necker (grandson of Horace-Bénédict de Saussure) abandoned his hometown of Geneva, Switzerland, and spent the last twenty years of his life on the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Hebrides.
