Three years ago, the film Nasser 56 (1996), from Muhammad Fadil, a dramatic reenactment of the Suez crisis, set unprecedented attendance records in Egypt. Opening at the end of another disappointing year marked by a steady decline in studio film production and a dearth of high-quality offerings—and held back from public screening a full year by wavering government support—the film breathed new life into the movie industry and precipitated a national discussion about the legacy of Gamal Abdel Nasser. The film has come and gone from Cairo theaters (although screenings abroad continue), but Nasse

Abstract This article does not attempt to outline the history of Egypt’s Nationalist Party since its foundation by Mustafa Kamil in 1907; rather, it demonstrates the colonialist nature of early British narratives, then discusses the counternarratives of contemporary Egyptian nationalist leaders, and analyzes the emergence of academic narratives from Egyptian and Western academic historians. The article argues that the image of the Nationalist Party in Western academia has moved away from the defamation of early British colonialist writers, with a favorable image prevailing among Egyptian acade

In Egypt, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, older, fragmented, and more localized forms of identity were replaced with new, alternative concepts of community, which for the first time had the capacity to collectively encompass the majority of Egyptians. The activism of Mustafa Kamil (1874–1908) and the populist message of the Watani Party began the process of defining and popularizing urban Egyptian nationalism. After Kamil's premature death in 1908, there was more of an “urgent need,” as described by Zachary Lockman, for “tapping into and mobilizing new domestic constituencies in

Abstract The human microbiome, both systemic and tumor microenvironment (TME)-associated, exerts a profound influence on cancer development, progression, and response to treatment. To facilitate microbiome analysis in cancer, we developed an AI-driven computational pathology system that determines relative microbiome levels in H&E-stained slides from formalin-fixed paraffin- embedded tissue specimens. We utilized available whole-genome and whole-transcriptome sequencing data for microbiome detection in TCGA bladder cancer [Poore et al. 2020; Nature 579], for which images were available, to

This thesis studies the formulation and expression of Egyptian nationalism in the period 1882-1919. In particular, it argues that Egyptian nationalism, rather than having the territorial nation-state as the highest form of nationalist expression, was composed of multiple overlapping and contingent identities. Furthermore, this thesis will draw attention to inter-and intra- elite rivalries between power bases within Egypt, including the office of the Khedive, the urban elite, landowners, European powers, and Ottoman representatives; and the way in which these vying groups affected the growth an

Modern underground structures (i.e. tunnels) are less vulnerable to seismic actions than above ground structures. However underground monuments like tombs and catacombs, present certain construction and geometrical particularities that make them quite vulnerable, both in long term static and especially under seismic conditions. The analysis of the stability of these complex monuments under static and strong seismic loading, together with other factors affecting material strength (rising water level, aging and weathering), are the key factors for the efficient restoration and retrofitting of th

It returns to the mid-1890s, and the death of her brother, possibly an impetus for her decision to marry, sight unseen, a Damascus journalist-bureaucrat. It was a short marriage. Insisting on a divorce, Fawwaz returned to Cairo. Engaged once again with the publishing scene, it was in this period that she wrote in Mustafa Kamil’s al-Liwa’ and contributed briefly to new women-centred magazines. This chapter analyses Hasan al-Imam’s famous film adaptation of Naguib Mahfouz’s novel Bayn al-Qasrayn (Palace Walk,1964). Here I read cinema as a genre that further ‘defigurated’ the 1919 events by fitting it into the Free Officers’ ideological reframing of the nationalist movement. The trope of unity, central to the novel, is taken to another level, both in terms of form and content, through a number of compelling additions to the original plot presented in a melodramatic fashion. The chapter shows that al-Imam transformed Mahfouz’s liberal representation of the revolution into a Nasserist r
